Over the holidays, I was bored with repeats and decided to give HOUSE a try. Needless to say I quickly became addicted to Hugh Laurie’s incredibly fun, grumpy, sarcastic, egotistical Dr. House. Laurie’s acting ability transforms what could be a very standard medical procedural show into a show where anything can happen, and usually does. If you haven’t seen the show, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.

Desperately Seeking A Good Story
Desperate Housewives started off with a bang (literally!). From the moment Mary-Alice shot herself, I was hooked. Wisteria Lane had been uncommonly blessed with a fantastic mystery, witty dialogue, and a cast to die for (again, literally!).
Unfortunately, what started off as a show with endless potential has completely become a parody of itself. Each well written character has turned into a cartoon shell of its formal self. Last night’s episode again illustrated why this show has become almost unwatchable.
1. Susan Meyer needing to re-marry her scum of an ex-husband for medical insurance. If Susan can afford to live on Wisteria Lane, how can she not afford an operation, or health insurance?
2. If Tom and Lynette are each working employed as well paid Ad Execs, how can they not afford a live in nanny for their crazy kids?
3. Why did they have to cast an older version of Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gabby’s Mom?
4. Why does Edie suddenly want to get married? Hasn’t she always been written as the Wisteria whore who doesn’t need a man to get by?
5. It’s time to move on, Mary-Alice is dead, the entire Paul/Zach story is so boring and creepy, why is this story continuing to suck all energy out of the show?
6. Perhaps the biggest question of all though is, Why am I still watching this show?

Write by Numbers
Smallville is one of those TV shows that could be written by a team of grade schoolers. If you ever want to join the writing staff of Smallville, follow my simple instructions.
Step 1: Invent a mysterious young man/woman with special powers. The ‘special powers’ can be as a result of one of the two meteor showers that have hit smallville, or on an experiment that ‘LuthorCorp’ has created (Question: How does LuthorCorp make money from all these experiments, they must own shares in WalMart or something).
Step 2: The mysterious stranger either is from Smallville, or ends up meeting one of our local Smallville Denizens.
Step 3: The mysterious stranger is either ‘good’, and someone who Clark (with his own set of powers) can relate to, or he/she is ‘bad’ and Clark must defend a helpless Lana/Chloe/Family member from them.
Step 4: Clark confronts Lex or Lionel (always!). Lex is always behind or is somehow involved in creating this mysterious stranger. Lex/Lionel always denies his involvement with the evil-doer yet in the end is always lying.
Step 5: Show ends with Clark saving the day. Mysterious stranger is either killed, thrown into Arkham Asylum or sent on his way to help other people (learning from Clark that being ‘good’ is better then being ‘evil’)
I’m sorry to say that Smallville continuously dissappoints me. Yet somehow I still watch. I don’t know why, but I do. Growing up with the Superman mythos, I’ve always had a week spot for the show – I LOVED Lois & Clark! Hopefully the show will end soon, so I can stop putting myself through this torture. At least we have a break until April (new episodes start again in April!).
Oh Mr. Postman…
I don’t think I could be anymore excited to open today’s mailbox and find this. I just saw this over at EW.com. Let’s hope my mailman delivers it today. Sometimes I get the new EW Friday, other times I have to wait until Monday, or God forbid Tuesday. Please Mr. Postman…. Give me some news.. (is that how the song goes, I really don’t remember)
Underwhelmed by Wednesday
In general, Wednesday is one of my most anticipated days of TV, why you ask? four words: LOST and VERONICA MARS (yes ‘and’ is a word!). That said, last night was one of the most depressing evenings of TV, during a generally magical time known as February Sweeps.
Let me first start off talking about everyone’s favorite castaways, LOST. What a dissappointing episode. Writers Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse (whom no doubt are reading this!) – guess what? We know Sayid was a torturer and that he is ‘tortured’ by his past. The episode was pointless…. and the cheesy ‘B’ story with Sawyer and Hurley – I’m pretty sure the writers of ‘Rodney’ could have come up with a better idea. All that said, the almost countdown to zero had me on the edge of my seat, but a quality 5 minutes does not a great episode make.
VERONICA MARS A REPEAT! I think of myself as pretty plugged in to the world of TV. I read about VM being put on hold until ‘South Beach’ sinks, and ‘Top Model’ comes back. But I thought that starts next week. After the underwhelming LOST, the only thing that was getting me through the night was catching a great episode of VM.
Thanks for supporting me through my sad evening! Hopefully tonight’s TV will be better!
Could Lorelai BE anymore immature?
Having just finished watching last night’s episode of Gilmore Girls, I have to ask: Who’s the mother in the relationship, Rory or Lorelai? I’ve loved Gilmore Girls throughout it’s entire run, but this episode was almost too much! (To paraphrase Chandler:) Could Lorelai BE anymore childish? Whether she was ‘learning’ about the kitchen with Rory, or acting like a five year old on vacation with Luke, I almost found myself being amazed with the stupidity of her character. While Luke was no picnic on this mini-weekend – I completely found myself sympathizing with him, as he no doubt was thinking that his new found ‘daughter’ is way smarter then his soon-to-be wife!
Yet just as I found myself completely turned off by the episode, the show sucks me back in with another fantastic final act. Only this show makes me pity the rich and powerful, and admire the simpler fun lives of our Stars Hollow denizens. It will be interesting to see if Logan follows Lorelai’s path of happiness instead of wealth. Somehow I can’t see Logan slumming it at the Independance Inn to help support his family!

Addicted to Battlestar
Over the weekend I continued my mission to catch up on Battlestar Galactica. Having come late to the party, I’ve been simultaneously Tivo’ing season 2, while catching up with past episodes via DVD rental and the iTunes Music Store. On Saturday I watched the season 1, two-parter entitled Kobol’s Last Gleaming (Part 1 and 2).
(Spoiler Alert): The season finale brilliantly set up Season 2, which luckily, I’ll be watching tomorrow night on DVD! [instead of having to wait months to find out the fate of our beloved BSG crew] Yet my one gripe with the episode is, “Where’s the Suspense?”. For a brief second, I was ‘shocked!’ by Capt. Adama’s suprise assassination – but then I thought for a second, obviously he’ll be pull a Tony Almeida (24) and survive a point-blank gunshot. The show’s hero isn’t really going to die?
The interesting thing about this, when I was mentioning this to a fellow BSG addict… She pointed out that at the time, the writer’s didn’t really know whether or not Edward James Olmos (Capt. Adama) would be back for a second season – and this was their insurance if he didn’t wish to return. I think I speak for all BSG fans when I say I’m glad the Captain survived, and I look forward to watching the continuing voyages of… (oops, sorry, wrong show!)
“I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley”
I work from home, and seeing as though I’ve spent my morning sipping coffee and catching up on TV, I’m using the term ‘work’ quite liberally! (I’m actually working ALL weekend so I can be forgiven!) I just have to take a moment to say I LOVE THE OFFICE. The show throws in such great little gags. The Conan O’Brien bit in New York was priceless. Steve Carrell is truly a comic genius… and his tour of ‘the real new york was great – with times square, sbarro’s, all he was missing was a lunch at TGIF!
Sidebar: His ‘New York’ is totally my semi-annual trips: Broadway Shows, TGIF, and Times Square – I’m a complete tourist
The great thing about the show, is that while Michael is often portrayed as an idiot, he really is a a great boss. He cares about his employees, and understands work is so much more about ‘numbers’. Steve Carrel has created one of the most complex and funny characters on TV!
