We finally reached the end of BEVERLY HILLS 90210’s first season. Why is this such good news? Firstly, we get rid of the generic (and awful) first season credits. Season 2 (or the summer season as it may be known as) brings us the infamous ‘blue headshots’ that most 90210 fans remember fondly. Most importantly though, the show shifts focus from the cheesy after-school special antics of the Walsh twins (Brenda learns to drive! Brandon works at the school paper!), and becomes the 90210 we remember and love. The adventures officially begin! Brenda and Dylan run off to Tijuana (Mr. Walsh goes nuts!), Brenda’s pregnancy scare, Dylan deals with his crazy mom and Dad, David and Kelly’s mom hook-up! I’m way too excited for the summer season!

Ba-Bye DOM
Tonight’s ENTOURAGE was not great, definitely the seasons worst episode. Some quick observations:
Why are the episodes so short. I was under the impression that this was HBO (not ‘regular’ TV). Isn’t ENTOURAGE supposed to be 30 minutes. Not the patheticly short 24 minutes we’ve been getting each week.
While I’m thrilled Dom is gone. I’m surprised his story was wrapped up in a mere two episodes. I’m curious if he’ll make a return this season. Random fact: I myself was relegated to the ‘Oakwood Apartments’ this winter! No, I didn’t see Dom and his Hummer.
Was the song that played over the closing credits a tease of things to come. I wonder if it was Saigon’s new hit single. Those of you may remember that Turtle discovered Saigon last season.
Since I’m in the midst of watching FIREFLY on DVD, I can’t help but think of how much Jayne reminds me of Drama!
Hooked on FIREFLY
With the recent addition of FIREFLY to my DVD library (thanks gal pal Ariel), it was inevitable that I’d become hooked on yet another cult TV show. Yet after watching the first disc of the series, I wasn’t convinced I’d become obsessed with yet another sci-fi series (this was no Battlestar Galactica). What was the big deal with this show? Sure the show was well put together, with a likeable cast, witty writing and some interesting stories. But did this show really warrant a fandom so dedicated that it inspired legions of websites, browncoats so powerful that they actually convinced a studio to make a movie? Clearly I didn’t ‘get it’. But I stuck it out, as I’m one to do (see: Smallville), hoping the show would fulfill the potential I’ve heard so much about.
So fast forward a week later, I’m officially hooked and LOVING FIREFLY! Just point me to the nearest recruitment office, and I’m so joining the browncoats. I just watched string of episodes, starting with ‘Our Mrs. Reynolds’ and ending with ‘Out of Gas’. I think what hooked me was Saffron (Mal’s ‘wife’). I just didn’t see it coming. I loved the episode and was completely surprised with the ending. I can’t wait for Saffron’s return (yes, I read the DVD synopsis’ on the back of the box!)
The only downside to FIREFLY is that I know it ends! I have so many questions, and I’m curious if any of them are going to be answered by the time the 13 episodes and movie (aptly titled SERENITY) is finished.
What’s the deal with the Shepherd. He knows way too much about military history and tactics to just be a Sheperd.
What was Inara running from? Why did she really end up on Serenity?
What exactly is wrong with River, what did the Alliance do to her?
Will Simon and Kaylee ever hook up?
What’s the deal with the foreign (Asian?) writing and language. There is obviously some symbolism there.
Will we ever actually meet a Reaver? Are there any nice ones?
Regardless of the questions up in the air, I’m loving the series and looking forward to watching the rest of the series, as well as the movie. Too bad I didn’t catch on sooner, no doubt my viewership when the series was actually on TV may have helped just a bit! Every eyeball counts! Damn you FOX! You took ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT away from me, and now this!
Kyle XY Review
Sure the initial premise is cool: good looking teen wakes up in the forest with no clothes and no recollection of who he is and how he got there. Yet because it’s an ABC Family show, that’s pretty much where the coolness factor ends. KYLE XY revolves around Kyle, a young man who may or may not be an alien (he has no belly button!). Within the first hour, Kyle is taken from a juvenile detention centre and adopted by a workaholic child psychologist, her supporting husband and meddlesome two kids. No doubt conflict, romance and hilarity will ensue as Kyle adjusts to his new life with his new family.
The premiere episode does a great job of laying the groundwork for the first season. It introduces us to our main characters, and hints at what could be an interesting X-Files-like mythology. We discover that Kyle is an off the charts genius. And more importantly, a love triangle between two girls is not-so-subtlety set up with Kyle. The show has potential as a fun summer series (as fankly, there isn’t much else on). But considering the fact it’s target audience is 10-15 year olds, the show will no doubt end up being a dumbed down version of the X-Files (with a bit of Degrassi mixed in). Sadly, this TV addict will continue watching to find out the truth about KYLE XY! (again, he HAS NO BELLY BUTTON!)
