To Reveal or Not to Reveal: The HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Dilemma

Josh Radnor ted mosby

TVGuide’s Michael Ausiello’s recent revelation that Alicia Silverstone may in fact be the mother Ted meets in HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER begs the obvious question. Do we really want to meet the future Mrs. Ted Mosby?

After three seasons of build up, can any one actress possibly live up to the hype? Should creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas consider going the Maris on FRASIER route? Allowing fans to have Ted live happily ever with whomever their imagination sees fit?

I want to meet the mother!! Not only that, I’d like to see how Ted interacts with her after they meet.

ps-I like how the imagination link goes to Ashley Williams’ IMDB. I would love to see her in HIMYM again.

Here’s a solution: How about CBS renews the show and solves this problem all together… Or at least for another few years. I’m not ready for this show to end.

I think I’d feel a bit cheated if we never got to see the mother after all this build-up. However, I hope it’s not Alicia Silverstone. I’m happy to have her on the show as a girlfriend, but I just can’t see her as the future Mrs. Ted Mosby.

I really want to meet the mom. Btw, Carter Bays made me think of Carter Baisden from GG. I want more GG!

  • John

I want to meet the mother.

And what hype? I have no expectation that Ted’s wife will be anything or anyone special (other than to him).

  • John,

Considering how great Ted and Robin were together, I think the mother has to be pretty special. Lord knows the HIMYM creators don’t want people thinking, “Ted broke up with Robin for this….”

The entire show, is really a build up to the big reveal…. whomever she is… better be great!

John….you took the words out of my mouth,or fingers i guess.

    i love Robin

  • I want to meet the mother. And I want her to be Kristen Bell.

I want to meet the mother. I want her to be the slutty pumpkin. Alicia would be fine, but not quite what I’d imagine.

  • sJ

Wait wait wait…hold on a sec!!!

During the writer’s strike didn’t the writers of HIMYM put out a statement that in case the show never returns they want us to know that the mother is “the coat check girl” from one of the earlier seasons????

Yeah, but they weren’t really great together. They clearly wrote their storyline as one with many faults that they just can’t get over.

It’s a difficult decision and I feel for the writers. I hope the end result doesnt suck.

  • @sJ… that was a joke..and even Ted says she is not the mother in the episode.
    …now onward.
And I know Ausiello sometimes gets the scoop…but I think his conclusions are wrong. Victoria stuck around for multiple episodes and she is not the mom. I do agree with Ausiello that the show can go on if the mother is introduced, but it kind of takes away some of the mystery of it all…kind of like Barney’s job or the Janitor’s name in Scrubs….

I suppose I should wait for the first episode with her to air before being for certain… Is she (Alicia) comes in as Dr. Stella (possibility since Ted said there was more to that story)… we should look for the yellow umbrella and her name to be Tracy… but on a wild shot, I would say that unless the show gets canceled and they need quick resolution to prevent rioting and looting in the streets…she is not the momma.
    Just my thoughts though.

I honestly think the mother should be Victoria. Even if she had a major setback in her relationship with Ted, they were really good together. Even if he broke up with her in the meanest way possible, I think that she should come back in a later season.

In the episode “No Tomorrow,” Ted says his mother was in the nightclub where he was being an ass just to see what happens.

During the later part of the episode, he bumps into a woman and apologizes. The occurance has no point in the plot whatsoever, and I doubt the writers would write something in that wasn’t a joke or wasn’t connected to anything. So, I think that so far the woman he bumps into is the future Mrs. Ted Mosby.
