TV Addict Rant: I’m Done With Britney [and Lindsay]

The TV Addict is taking a stand.

Helping prolong Britney and Lindsey’s fifteen, okay thirty minutes of fame is not a part of my job description. So from here on in — if you’re searching for that first look photo of Lindsay Lohan on the set of UGLY BETTY, or a preview clip of Britney Spears latest attempt at respectability on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER — you’ve come to the wrong place.

If shows want to earn this TV Addict’s respect, they’re going to have to do it the old—fashioned way. With compelling story-lines and stellar acting. Not by turning our favorite shows into the TV equivalent of the Betty Ford Center for spoiled Celebutards.

Britney, I understand. Even though she did a fine job on HIMYM, she’s a singer, not an actress. Lindsay Lohan, on the other hand, is an actress, so I’ve got no problem seeing her on Ugly Betty. She was good in Mean Girls….

Ok I’m totally with you about LiLo because I think moving to NY and putting LiLo on a bunch of eps sounds desperate.

But BritBrit was good on HIMYM and they gave her a chance, she did well and they brought back the character because it made sense.

Naf, Britney is both an actor and singer. She grew up doing both but became famous for the singing.

  • I kind of agree with you and I think its great you are taking a stand. While short cameos I can understand (like Christian Siriano) and they can even be fun, they dont really distract much from the main story or characters.
I really like Ugly Betty, but Lindsay Lohan of all people… at least Paris Hilton was on just 1 episode of Veronica Mars (thank heavens)…
They are going after a rating’s boost but they did that last year with great storyline. And me thinks writers and actors dont have much (or anything) to do with it, that is producers meddling in.

  • Josh Emerson

Well, I would argue that HIMYM has been stellar this season, regardless of your feelings on Britney.

  • Jessica

I think it would be different if they brought them on as themselves (like Ted and the gang running into Britney backstage at her concert, that would be lame) but at least they are playing other people. It doesn’t bother me and in a day and age when there are so many choices who can blame a show for trying to get the edge? I’ll watch both, and probably still enjoy them.

  • Jessica,

Just so you know. I’ll still be watching. I just won’t be posting ridiculous and pointless pics as they walk to and from set. I’ll leave that award-winning journalism to TV Guide!

  • Jessica

    point taken 😉

  • Me-OW!

  • To this day, I don’t understand why people say Britney did a good job on HIMYM. Every time she delivered a line, I cringed because it was easy to tell how it was SUPPOSED to be said. I don’t hate Britney, but I also don’t think we should endlessly praise her for being able to coherently speak a few sentences.

That being said, I wouldn’t say Britney is living her “thirty minutes of fame.” She’s been around for years and will continue to dominate entertainment news until the day she dies. And hopefully Lindsey will actually TRY on Ugly Betty. When she’s good, she’s good. But that’s a rarity…

britney may be one thing, but lindsey is completely different. linsdey, before all her stupid shenanigans, was a great actress, and still is. mean girls? bobby? prarie home companion? before her dumb blockbusters and downward spiral, she had everyone in hollywoods respect, so i odnt think its fair for you to clump her into a group with britney.

  • Anna

I agree. If shows want more viewers, bringing on “celebutards” is not the way to do it. You need an interesting storyline, great actors and characters with substance.

“I agree. If shows want more viewers, bringing on “celebutards” is not the way to do it. You need an interesting storyline, great actors and characters with substance.”

Uh, no. That might be what makes a show great, but it’s not what draws in mass viewers. If the above attributes were all it took, then Firefly, Wonderfalls, Veronica Mars, Sports Night, etc would still be on the air.

  • Guys, let’s be practical TV viewership is down in general. Great storyline will not guarantee an increase in viewership.

I’m okay with the stunt casting as long as they don’t over do it and mess up the storyline.

If this stunt casting will help the show survive, I’m willing to take it.
Stunt casting is a way for HIMYM and UB get new viewers to their show hoping that they would still stick around the next episode.

    It’s a risk

But I understand your decision not to focus on the stunt casting but hopefully don’t hate the shows they are just fighting for survival.
