Are Joss Whedon Fans Overhyping DR. HORRIBLE?

At the risk of incurring the wrath of pretty much 99.999% of the internet fandom community, this TV Addict is just going to say it. Are Joss Whedon fans drinking the Kool-aid?

Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy as much as the next Browncoat. But does the first part of DR. HORRIBLE, Joss Whedon’s just launched internet musical featuring the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day honestly warrant such an exuberant outpouring of affection? I mean take a look at this flurry of twitter messages:

mytakeontv: I’m on my 5th viewing of Dr. Horrible. AMAZING!

DuckyDoesTV: Dr. Horrible is sheer genius!

raelee: Dr. Horrible is wrecking havoc on my schedule for the day. Can’t stop watching.

thc_jen: Dr. Horrible was AMAZING!!! Who wants to talk about with me?

thedirtycanuck: I can’t believe i’m going to miss the Whedon fan-event of the year (Dr. Horrible) because of work. boo to life.

GMMR: ‘Dr. Horrible’ is FRAKTASTIC! Act I is live and it doesn’t disappoint! Go!

justjody: NPH is made of awesome. “The world is a mess, and I just… need to rule it.” LOL!

matsie: If you haven’t watched the first episode of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, I just don’t know what to think of you!

That’s not to say I’m not in full support of what Whedon’s trying to accomplish. In fact, I’m so in favor of Whedon’s plan to as he so eloquently put it, “Turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience,” that I went ahead and paid for the entire DR. HORRIBLE series on iTunes so that everybody involved in the project will actually get paid. I’m just not quite sure that it’s the second coming of Buffy. Okay, third if you count that time she came back from the dead.

[UPDATE:] I the overhype warranted Who knows, maybe I’m the moron? Here’s some more Twitter Posts

themarc: Boo, the internets are crashing around Dr. Horrible.

atlanticwasborn:Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog = AMAZING! I finished act 1 a while ago, and it is just AWESOME! They better release an official soundtrack!

texpatriate:Dangit! All you Whedon Dweebs get off the Dr Horrible site so I can get on!

faketwitt: My Doctor can now cut the cord since I’ve lived to see Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible!

And yes, that last one’s made up. But you get the idea.

  • Debbie Downer…can’t people enjoy what they enjoy? Flaming just to flame? Yup.

  • I think we are just so happy to get something from Joss Whedon, that we naturally react with great enthusiasm. Especially if it’s musically based. We’ll take what we can get form him, and be darn grateful. He could make a short film about him taking a dump while singing a song from the Buffy musical and we’d be ecstatic. Okay, slight hyperbole, but this is the guy who not long ago said Joss Whedon was better than kittens. (Except, that one I meant, though it was a tough contest).

  • I second what theREELaddict says: I think the real glee is that we finally have something new from Joss. I enjoyed Dr. Horrible on its own merits, but the joy was heightened because I knew Joss was behind it.

  • Tim G.

I can’t even get the site to load!

  • Tim G,

You should be buying it on iTunes to support the creative team behind the scenes!

  • Since the site is down, I’m lazy and I love Joss, Neil and Nate, I also bought the season pass. Plus, it’s $2 less than if you bought each episode individually.

They had dual servers set up in anticipation of lots of traffic – and visitors crashed it anyway so there’s certainly been a lot of interest – just Whedon fans or more? too early to tell I think. It’s also hit #1 spot on iTunes for TV series so that’s kind of impressive. I’m a Firefly fan rather than a Whedon fan and I really enjoyed it and very much in anticipation of the rest

  • ewanspotter

If might not be the second coming, but it’s damn amusing. Right now I’ll just watch it online, but I’ll by the DVD.

  • I finally watched it. I’m sorry but my joy is purely from how great it is. The songs are so much better than OMWF. Super sweet and hilarious. Plus, Neil is too cute.

  • paketep

Haven’t seen it yet, but Joss will always have the benefit of the doubt from me.

He’s released duds, of course, but he’s also released many of the greatest series/movies ever, so I’ll follow happily whatever he works on.

  • NikkiHolly

i’ll admit that i’m bias since:

    a. It’s freaking Joss Whedon. I worship him.

    b. It’s summer. There isn’t a lot of new stuff on tv.

    c. there’s singing and dancing.

so yeah, i decided a month ago that it would be awesome. i finally got to see it, and i still think it’s awesome.

I watched Dr. Horrible just after midnight – once – and while it made me smile, its not my cuppa tea. I’m probably one of the few who wasn’t a fan of BTVS’s “Once More With Feeling.” I appreciate Whedon’s ability to write a lyric, and think Harris, Fillion and Day were very good, and will definitely tune in for the remaining segments. But while I’m glad about the response it has received, Dr. Horrible just isn’t my thing. I’m waiting with baited breath for Dollhouse!

  • jess

i thought it was really funny. I love the total cheese of it. It looks like they had a lot of fun doing it.

  • lizabeta

NikkiHolly… you summed it up perfectly for me. Besides, it was so insanely cheesy… how could that NOT be funny? Watching Nathan jump onto the van and start singing… O.M.G… I thought I was going to fall out of my seat!

  • Finally got myself to the net on the other side of the world to watch it and yup it IS AWESOME!

  • Tim G.

I’m a huge Whedon fan. I drove 8 hours to see one of the early screenings of SERENITY from NJ to Norfolk, VA. I own all his series on DVD, I have books, soundtrack CDs and assorted other paraphernalia.

All that being said… I was a little let down by Dr. Horrible.

Loving NPH and Nathan Fillion, hating the songs. Sorry, they’re AWFUL. OMWF was so much better.

  • Chitown Mimi

I am a Whedoner and frakkin’ loved that video! OMG it was so hilarious!! It made me happy on so many levels: 1) Singing and Dancing…Yes! 2) Neil Patrick is so cute in this thing! (Practicing his evil laugh. Ahhh.) 3) Nathan Fillion, Nathan Fillion, Nathan Fillion. I miss Serenity so much right now. Overall, two huge thumbs up!

I didn’t like it. I don’t get the raving reviews. But I’ll give “Dollhouse” a shot. Not holding my breath.
