90210-Oh-Oh: Critics Being Left in the Dark

90210 cast

This afternoon, theTVaddict.com received the following official statement from the CW.

“The CW and our studio partner CBS Paramount Network Television have made the strategic marketing decision not to screen “90210” for any media in advance of its premiere.  We’re not hiding anything . . . simply keeping a lid on 90210 until 9.02, riding the curiosity and anticipation into premiere night, and letting all our constituents see it at the same time.”

Now, far be it from this TV Addict to start unsubstantiated rumors [after-all, isn’t that what Entertainment Tonight is for?], but can this seriously be considered a positive sign for the show that’s supposed to be the CW’s last and best hope for survival?

I mean let’s face. If the CW and their studio partner CBS truly thought that 90210 was of a quality that would generate rave reviews, they’d be working as hard as Michael Phelps swims to put the pilot in the hands of every major Critic and Blogger across North America.

So I ask you, Proverbial Powers That Be at both the CW and CBS. What are you trying to hide? Because this TV Addict is not happy he now has to wait until September 2 to return to his favorite zip code.

So what you’re saying is that the CW’s doing the exact same thing when movie studios don’t screen Paris Hilton movies for the critics. I agree TVA, does not bode well for 90210.

    I smell another Knight Rider!

  • This does not surprise me since we’ve gotten an entire summer of vague ads. Unlike GG where they’ve practically given away every single plotline.

  • Sam

This is not really surprising, nor should it be. Frankly, I don’t know why networks release advance copies of shows to invite bad buzz where, in some cases, it isn’t warranted. Critics just love to bash. It’s easier, more fun. And 90210 would be a prime target for bashing, since there can be comparisons to the earlier show and also to Gossip Girl, another show so many like to bash.

Anymore, people don’t have to watch TV…they just have to go to a spoiler site and read all they need to know. The CW needs and wants viewers in front of the TV. I see no problem with this business decision at all.

However, I still can’t stand Les Moonves or Dawn Ostroff or Nina/Nancy Tassler. Their mismanagement is now legendary. Textbook legendary.

I don’t consider this bad news at all and i agree with Sam – this is a good business decision on the part of CW.

I don’t think anyone should read much into this (in terms of the quality of the pilot). The pilot may or may not be good. However i’m not expecting too much from it tbh, just based on past experiences watching CW pilots (One Tree Hill and Gossip Girls spring to mind).

  • Just Jody

I have to agree with Sam as well. Let the fans decide for themselves if they like it or not, without the press telling them if they should like it or not.

Not that I don’t think the show could potentially suck… I just really hope it doesn’t.

Bad newssss….From what i have seen the cast looks very bland.
Im still going to check it out to see Kelly and Brenda….I wish they would have dumped the kids and just brought back the old cast…

This news isn’t making me worried. I think it can be a good thing — it seems that many media no days like to give spoilers about show, dishing the latest scoop, I try to avoid spoilers but sometimes (like at TVguide) they are on the front page of the websites. To me I think they don’t want anything to get out and by releasing it to the media it would for sure. Yes, I know it often means bad news but I’m looking at the positive here. I also agree with those who have said that the media likes to bash things, and am happy that I won’t have anything in the back of my mind when it premieres.

Now I never noticed that it is on 9.02 — goodness imagine if we could of just waited two years 9.02.10 cause 90208 is Long Beach I think

    just my thoughts

    gotta say I’m excited though
