Guess the Cover: EW’s Fall TV Preview

Not that this will come as a surprise to anyone remotely familiar with, but this TV Addict’s favorite magazine is Entertainment Weekly. And with the Fall TV Season just around the corner [and yes, I realize I sound like a broken record], it’s time once again to play a little game I like to call ‘Guess the Cover’ of my favorite issue — EW’s Fall TV Preview.

Now as you may recall from last year,’s non-existent crack research staff has done a little digging and come to the conclusion that EW’s Fall TV Preview cover traditionally falls into one of two categories. It either highlights one of the fall’s most buzzed about new show or rewards the previous season’s ‘it’ show.

Now I know what you’re thinking, surely gracing the cover of EW’s Fall TV Preview has to be quite the coup for any show hoping to expand its audience. Well there my friends is where you’d be wrong. Take a look at six recent covers — JOEY, MISS MATCH and TITANS — where are they now? Luckily, EW seems to pick the right horse fifty percent of the time, thanks to buzz-worthy covers featuring LOST, BUFFY and ALIAS.

Although this does beg the obvious question, which show are you picking for this year’s Fall TV preview cover? Will EW choose a critically acclaimed hit like PUSHING DAISIES that could use the attention, go with the endlessly buzzed about GOSSIP GIRL or 90210? Or choose a cover guaranteed to fly off the shelves, which in this case would be my guess — HEROES. Post away with your predictions.

  • Ausiello said in his latest spoiler column that he “squealed like a 15 year old girl” when he saw the cover, so clearly it’s a show he’s excited about. Fringe?

  • marenamoo

Ausiello’s Fifteen year old girl – 90210, Gossip Girl
    Hot new show – Fringe

  • Melissa, I too read that in Ausiello’s column. But figured there are a lot of things that could get him that excited. For all we know, SMURFS are making a surprising comeback this fall! EW is afterall the magazine that just put Harry Potter on it’s Fall Movie Preview even though the film’s being released next summer!

What I think it will be: 90210

What I’d like it to be: Dexter!

  • Marisa

I think the love for JJ Abrams with continue…so make it Fringe!!

Although, I think Gossip Girl/90210 are a great next guess.

  • Marisa

I meant the above post to read “….JJ Abrams WILL continue…”

  • bws

I think 90210 is no-go since TV Guide did that this week. I don’t think Fringe either since that wouldn’t make Ausiello squeal. So I think it’s Gossip Girl or Dexter. Dexter is interesting because the first episode of the season is the game changer of the season rather than the last episode.

  • TVFan

Who should get the cover: Chuck, Pushing Daisies.

You will: Probably Heroes, with Kristen Bell being responsible for Ausiello squealing like a 13 year old girl.

  • I think it’s going to be either GG or Heroes. I don’t usually read EW but someone at my job has a subscription and has been leaving back issues in the bathroom. Love it.

  • Stacy

Check out Perez’s new entry!!! He just posted one for Sept 5th, but it’s not the Fall one. Guess that rules out 90210.

As Stacy said above, that rules out 90210 because it’s not likely they’ll do that two weeks in a row.

My guess is Gossip Girl. Although the chances of it being Fringe are there too.

  • Josh Emerson

Ha, a 90210 cover with Shannen and Jennie was going to be my guess! Seriously.

For the Fall TV issue, hmm. I don’t think it’ll be a new show. There’s not enough buzz around most of them. I hope they went with Pushing Daisies. I would squeal if that cast is on the issue!

  • ewanspotter

    If it’s 90210, I may throw up a little.

  • I think True Blood might sneak in there, seeing how most pilots from the broadcast networks weren’t sent to critics. Or I could be totally wrong.

  • Amy

I can’t see it being a new show because there’s not much buzz or big name stars in any of them. Last season’s ‘it show’ was surely Pushing Daisies in terms of critical success, so that would be my guess. And Ausiello’s a big fan of the show isn’t he?

Personally I’d rather it be Chuck or Fringe (Joshua Jackson!). I like Pushing Daisies but never fell in love with it, which surprised me since Wonderfalls is one of my favorite shows of all time.

  • Sarah Connor? Maybe there’s a new hot pic of Thomas Dekker?

  • kevin

When is the issue coming out? I just got the Sept.5 issue in the mail and it is not the fall tv preview one. The season is beginning — I hope I didn’t miss the issue.

  • It has “Gossip Girl” on the cover.. trust me….

  • More info: It has Blake Lively and Penn Badgley…

  • Amy

There are three versions – Blake and Penn, Chace and ‘Vanessa’ and, best of all, Ed and Leighton.
