i have to give the HFPA more credit than the Emmy voters. At least they’ve picked some good ones. The Emmys are so predictable, it’s a wonder if they actually watch what they’re nominating. Glad to see some love for the women on Mad Men with the nod to January Jones, she had a great season. I’m really sad to see no love for The Wire (especially in its final season), but not surprised. I’m still scratching my head over the Entourage nomination, but would prefer to see it nominated over the abysmal Two and a Half Men.

The January Jones nomination is a nice surprise, but – on the whole – I thought the nominations for film and television were pretty darn awful. The HFPA couldn’t reasonably leave off 30 Rock and Mad Men, but most of the other nominations were a random mess.

I agree with Nick. I wish they’d bring back the Cable Ace Awards. They had those awards around *before* the days of drama on cable. Now that cable has almost as many shows as broadcast, there’d be plenty of eligible nominees to fill an awards show.

At the very least, they should split up GGs and Emmys by broadcast vs cable. Out of all the shows nominated for something, the *only* ones I watch are House and Brothers & Sisters — and I watch a lot of TV.

Granted, I watch a bit less after The Great Network Axe Swing of ’08 and after dropping Grey’s, Private Practice, Betty, and Fringe. In fact, out of the shows I do still watch (Chuck, Heroes, Prison Brk, Sarah Connor, House, South Park, Survivor, Stargate: Atlantis, Sanctuary, and Clone Wars), the only one GG-friendly is House. I guess I’m not mainstream anymore.

However, since they air off-season, I keep forgetting about Lost and Battlestar Galactica. They got ignored again too.

Out of shows that just ended, Boston Legal was a little less stellar this year, and I take it people were sick and confounded by their previous nominations. But, for it’s last and nearly best season, one set of actors, writers, and producers sorely overlooked — despite being on cable: The Shield.

i’m sorry but I also have to mention, this list also tends to skew towards white actors. There’s almost no people of color on that list and I know that comparatively there aren’t that many actors of color (also a problem) but the ones that are there tend to be great.

If LOST was on HBO or Showtime they’d have this one in the bag. Um. Unfortunately that isn’t the case. Can they just show the Golden Globes on HBO too? At least they’d be sure that audience has actually seen the majority of the nominees. Those are all good shows, but the restrictions on broadcast tv is take their shows out of the running.

I agree Nick. Great shows like How I Met Your Mother never have a shot because they have to compete with shows like Californication or Weeds.

That said, I’m very happy with the Dexter and 30 Rock nominations. And at least Neil Patrick Harris got one for Supporting Actor.

BTW, for those counting, that’s 37 nods for CABLE….15 for BROADCAST TV.

Think we got a problem, here? (Not to mention the fact that many, many of these cable shows and films are not even SEEN by the viewing public.)

THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID: There really needs to be SEPARATE category distinctions for CABLE and BROADCAST TV. One is governed by the FCC rules, while the other is not–and is strictly pay-to-watch. Therefore, cable can get away with more language, adult themes, risky scenes…etc. The writing and acting has NO limitations.

Why, then, should they be lumped together with “regulated” TV? Wouldn’t Hollywood be in an uproar if we just lumped all of the movie and TV categories into one…and had LOST competing with DARK KNIGHT for Best Drama?

It’s just as ludicrous to have these TV categories DOMINATED by cable shows and stars. It’s not a fair playing-field, and more people need to object.
