Breaking News: The CW Renews [Almost] Everything!

That noise you just heard was the squee of three million or so SUPERNATURAL fangirls learning that their favorite Winchester brothers, alongside GOSSIP GIRL, ONE TREE HILL, 90210, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL and SMALLVILLE have all been given early renewals for next season by The CW.

“As we continue to build The CW Network as a destination for young women, these six shows have clearly contributed to strengthening our schedule and our brand identity,” said The CW president Dawn Ostroff in a statement released to the media. “By securing these signature hits for next season, we’re furthering our commitment to deliver high-quality, original programming to our viewers, advertisers and affiliates.”

Unfortunately, noticeably absent from the announcement were pickups for high-quality scripted fare such as PRIVILEGED, REAPER, THE GAME and EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS. Whose fates are looking more and more perilous thanks to the increasing levels of buzz surrounding the CW’s upcoming development slate which includes such original ideas* like a GOSSIP GIRL spin-off, a MELROSE PLACE re-boot and VAMPIRE DIARIES, the network’s not at all subtle attempt at Twilight: The Television Series. Boo on the CW for picking up 90210 & not Privileged. Give it a chance!

  • Aileen

Huzzah! Not that I was really worried about Supernatural and Gossip Girl. I’m kind of more worried that CW will cease being a network which will lead me to lose my favorite shows.

But boo about Privileged. That is a much better show than 90210. I hope it gets a last-minute reprieve.

  • Jillian

*squee* As a fan of Supernatural, I do appreciate the CWs vote of confidence for a consistently good show.

  • Theo

Boo I love the game, it is truly a guilty Pleasure.

  • Lol

I was just planing to comment on your earlier post about season renewals which Korbi,E! and EW posted and puff – TV Addict also has their version of breaking news ! :))

What’s wrong with blogosphere these days, firstTechCrunch takes a hit but it seems they will not be the only ones … everyone wants pageviews hehe

  • The remaining WB shows hanging on! Worried about Everybody Hates Chris, the show is almost obscure sadly it might be canceled and if that happens ANTM is the lone UPN show standing

  • Josh C.

while i couldnt be happier for gossip girl getting another season I have no faith in the higher ups at the CW. 90210 is complete garbage. acting wise, writing wise and everything in between. not to mention the fact that its star is diva who has nothing to be proud of. go back to degrassil atleast on that show you had a character people could hate

  • Ace

Privileged and Reaper are my favorite two CW shows :(. Not surprised that the other shows got renewed though. Even though 90210 is awful, it gets a lot of Buzz. I watch Gossip Girl, but it isn’t a must see.

  • Alison

yes! gossip girl and one tree hill! i figure gg would probably get picked up but i was worries about oth

  • Jessica

Gossip Girl, Smallville, and Supernatural I am so uber thrilled.

  • Josh Emerson

I don’t understand how Dawn Ostroff still has a job. It just doesn’t make sense. The ironic thing is that one of the shows she doesn’t hype, Supernatural, is one of the best performing on the network. It just shows how clueless she is.

And I’m still bitter about Veronica Mars. Why? Because Gossip Girl’s ratings aren’t any better than VM’s were, yet Ostroff acts like it’s the new Grey’s Anatomy! WTF?

  • Josh C.

Ostroff hypes it because unlike veronica mars, which i also liked am in no way slighting, people who dont watch it still know that its a show.

  • Mel

WOOOO HOOOO!!! Supernatural Season Five!! Gotta love it!! And I hope this means we get tights AND flight next season on Smallville!!

  • Nick

Ostroff. Just the mere mention makes me cringe. Here she is again, spouting how her network is “the destination for young women,” completely ignoring that the male sex even exists, or would ever want to watch a CW show. Baby, wake up. Your top-rated show, Smallville, is a guy magnet. So is Supernatural. So is Reaper. Is this why you ignore hyping them?

Can’t the CW execs get it in their thick skulls, the WB shot to pop/icon greatness by programming to “TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS.” No one was excluded. It was a lineup with much diversity, not all soap clones of each other. Lily and Melrose? Really? This is what you’re pinning your fall hopes on? Man, that vampire show better be good.

And re: 90210….thank heavens for Matt Lanter. He may just save this sinking show. The problem was, too few truly hot guys and girls. Adam Gregory was about it, prior to Matt’s arrival.

  • bws

Well, I’m sure they’ll wait to see how Reaper does with the new batch of episodes before making a decision. Tune in, peeps.

  • aleeceeyah

the cw is like the most unimaginative station…
but i would be lying if i said that its not the channel my TV is on cw 9 times out of 10…i am looking forward to a Melrose place remake i used to watch that show every Monday after 90210 back in the day…but BOO about the game possibly BEING CANCELED….AND THANK GOD FOR ANOTHER SEASON OF SUPERNATURAL WOOOFREEKINGHOO

  • Caryn

I hope they pick up Everybody hates Chris it’s one of the VERY FEW shows we can watch as a family! Privileged is also a guilty pleasure for me! Much better than 90210 which I stopped watching after the first two episodes

  • Precious

Shame on CW. First they canceled “All of Us” then they canceled “Girlfriends” now they are trying to cancel “The Game” and Everybody Hates Chris” the only remaining shows that reaches out to African American audiences. Really, it is not fair. They should leave “The Game” alone. There are a lot of people who love watching it.

  • T

This was the one network that has given some thought to the fact that African Americans would like to watch shows that represent them too. Should have known that wouldn’t last. Guess if CW cuts the game and Everybody Hates Chris I’ll have to cut the CW, which I hope all other African Americans decide to do as well.
