Exclusive: Thomas Dekker Says TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES may be back

thomas_dekkerThomas Dekker at FanExpo 2009 (Source: Dekker Daily)

Thomas Dekker was our first. On-set interview that is.

Which is why — aside from starring in one of the most criminally under-appreciated television shows in recent memory — we’ll always have a soft spot for the TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES star.

And, why this TV Addict took it upon himself to brave the horde of 50,000 strong that converged upon Toronto’s Annual FanExpo over the weekend to provide fans of the show with some much needed closure. And, as luck would have it, a little hope — courtesy of the always classy and candid Dekker (Who was on hand to promote the slasher flick Laid to Rest) and was more than happy to take a few minutes to reflect upon his now infamous YouTube video, the one thing he would have changed about the series and of course, what was in store for Connor and Co. had the proverbial powers that be not put the kibosh on a third season of Sarah Connor’s Chronicles.

The TV Addict: How do you feel about being here in Toronto right now instead of the Warner Bros. lot shooting season three of the show?
Thomas Dekker:
I definitely miss the show a lot. In fact, it sort of catches me off guard how much I miss the show sometimes. I really miss the people I got to work with everyday and the environment of knowing where you were working on a daily basis. And of course, the story. I loved the story and I knew where the third season was going and I thought it was just so cool. I love that Josh [Executive Producer Josh Friedman] had the balls to make everybody kind of wait, and be patient. Unfortunately I guess people really weren’t that willing to be patient.

Since you brought it up, just how cool was season three going to be?
I’ve divulged too much in the past [so I have to be careful as to not piss off Josh] but I mean it was going to be really interesting because there were questions in the future like is Sarah Connor at the age she would be in the future or is she already dead? I know which one that is, and it was the more interesting of the two to me. Plus what is she doing in the past? Also my sort of relationship with Allison and finding Cameron would play a large part in the season, do I go with the robot I know or do I go with the human that doesn’t know me? The fact that Danny Dyson became a very important part of it was also very exciting because it harkened back directly to the second film.

Has there been any talk of continuing the story in a different form, a comic book perhaps?
They’ve spoken about doing a TV movie. Well, not a TV movie, but kind of like a direct-to-DVD movie [Think: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's THE PLAN]. Obviously it’s difficult because the show is based on a movie and they just had one come out, so it’s kind of hard to make a movie with our show because everyone has kind of forgotten about us. But they’re hoping, at least when I spoke to [Producer] James Middleton that’s where they are with it.

When did you find out that TERMINATOR had been officially terminated?
Obviously we’d seen the ratings and we had an inkling about it. But it was tricky, because the show was so popular overseas. In the end, it really came down to DOLLHOUSE or us and that was sort of what happened. I think we were too expensive and DOLLHOUSE was a lot cheaper.

So pretty much your salary cost us another season?!
[Laughs] It wasn’t my salary let me tell you that much! But I think that it ultimately did come down to money.

Where were you when you found out?
I ultimately found out while I was shooting Nightmare on Elm Street, I got a text from Josh that was typically Josh, “Show’s cancelled. Call me.” And that was that.

What inspired you to take to the internet and post a video on YouTube video (see above)?
I was in Chicago doing the movie and we were shooting nightshifts. Having just woken up, I was surfing the net just to see how people were reacting to the show and I found myself really touched by videos, blogs and all these things that random people of all ages and groups had done to try and save the show. It was nice to get the affirmation that people wanted more of something we worked so hard on. So I just kind of thought it would be funny of me to ask FOX to give me my job for another year. I really just wanted to make something to let them [the fans] know that we knew they were trying and we appreciated it and appreciate them.  The best part was that a lot of people though that I was drunk, stoned or f*cked up. Which tends to happen a lot of my stuff. I can assure you, I have many moments of non-sobriety but that wasn’t one of them. It’s actually really funny that I sort of come off as a crack head even though I’m not.

Looking back, to you have a favourite episode?
I’d say the bit that really just summed up the whole show to me was the ending montage of “Adam Raised a Cain,” where it’s the song that little Savannah Weaver was singing with John Henry, and they’re burying Derek and Sarah’s been arrested. i just think that that is a testament to the beauty of the show. It was a piece that was so poetic to me and one that you don’t normally see in a sci fi television vehicle. Moments like that made me very proud. And obviously I loved our last episode ‘Born to Run.”

Is there anything, be it a performance or an episode, that you would love the ability to travel back in time and change?
I wish I wasn’t so fat by the end of the season. But other than that, no. You know, I think all of us are pretty satisfied and proud. Even the episode that got kind of dissed or whatever, like the 20′s episode [Self Made Man], which was more experimental — I liked and thought it was high concept sci fi.

Garret Dillahunt is on what seems to be 15 different shows this fall, Summer [Glau] has jumped to Joss Whedon’s DOLLHOUSE, what’s next for you?
I’m doing movies right now, which is nothing against TV, but I’ve done a lot of TV and I’m really trying to branch out and I’m having a really good time with that. I did an indie called All About Evil, then Nightmare on Elm Street and next up is another indie that I start in two weeks but can’t disclose what it is yet. But it’s with a filmmaker that I’ve wanted to work with for my entire life, so I’m really excited. So yeah, I’m getting to do all this stuff, but it’s not the family like TERMINATOR. I miss the family.

I miss the family too, I liked being with those people once a week. This was a show that worked at a slow measured pace, it took its own time. It’s interesting to listen to Lena doing the Sky Hi-Def ads in the UK, I hadn’t realised how affecting her voice is.
I miss my weekly appointment with the gang.

This was my favorite show. I miss it so much!! I can only hope and pray for a movie or for the show to come back on somehow. It was just getting to the really good part like who would John end up with as a love interest and getting to know kyle. I would have personally been in heaven watching John, Kyle, and Derrick together each week!! (and by the way Thomas you did not look fat – you looked very good to me!)

  • Matt

We definitely have not forgot this show! Still hoping that there is a season three or a movie to get some of those lose endings sorted out. This was the best show on TV, FOX should be locked up for doing this to us….

  • Martha J

TSCC was the absolute best show I have ever seen on TV. No matter what aspect you judge, cast, writing, direction, camera work…just the best…even the music was great! So what does Fox do? They cancel it. Why? Was it so good it made the rest of your line up look bad? GD U Fox.

I am pre ordering Season 2 TSCC and I will watch it during Dollhouse’s time slot instead of watching Fox, just for spite. And that isn’t even enough vengeance for fans who were screwed like this by Fox

I want someone to restart production on this series right away, same cast, same crew.

  • Riel

Thanks goes to Thomas for sharing his opinions. What a sweetheart. xD We sure haven’t forgotten, I sure as hell haven’t. I’ve got nothing to look forward to entertainment wise, other then season four of Dexter. Many fans are still part of the active ‘Resistance’ to save TSSC! I agree with Martha J. I’d be more then happy to see the show continued!

We are still here, Thomas. We will never forget and we’ll never stop fighting for TSCC. Thank you very much and good luck in your new projects.

But Sarah Connor (Lena) was just cast in a main role in a potentially long running series for HBO…I wouldn’t count on this happening.

I actually really enjoyed “Self-Made Man.” I wasn”t into SCC before and then I saw that episode on youtube, and because it’s storyline wasn’t the type where you had to know what happened in the past episodes, I ended giving it the time of my day, which made me more interested in the show and thus becoming a fan…

I really hope they bring it back.

  • http://www.6LITEREATERDESIGNS.com Mark DeLisle

Why does good acting and great writing get punished (canceled) while Hell’s Kitchen marches on?!? What kind of messed up world do we live in? I for one will definitely NOT forget TSCC for a long time… I pray we at least get a graphic novel of closure although a movie would be amazing….

  • formytots0128

Hi Thomas, many of us have not forgotten you and the TSCC show. As a matter of fact, the TSCC cancellation actually turned a lot of people like myself into even bigger fans. At the moment, TSCC continues to thrive in the imagination and writings of talented fan fiction writers who themselves are big fans of the show. They are able to bring some comfort to us TSCC fans who miss the show very badly and were heartbroken and devastated by the cancellation. The ending of Season 2 “Born To Run” opened up so many possibilities for Season 3 that left so many of us hanging and wanting to see more. We encourage everyone to purchase TSCC Season 1 and Season 2 DVDs to show that a Season 3 can still be profitable. Let’s all work together to bring back TSCC. :)

  • katu

I will buy the DVD or do whatever is necessary to keep the hope alive… I love this show!

  • Sycore

Let ‘s move on people. It was a good show, but the cast and crew are off on other projects. With the trouble Halcyon is having right now, a direct to dvd feature seems unlike right now. Maybe in a year a two, when the big guys realize how broadcast TV and Nielsen numbers are no longer the way to measure profitability, something will get made. Even if by a miracle the cheaper shows FOX replaces TSCC with on Friday night do better, dvd sales, online viewing and syndication will make TSCC much more profitable.

  • Dilan Manawadu

i love tscc, please God bring it back!

  • Bridget Lukas

I just finished watching the final episode and I must say it is a first for me to be so impressed that I had to know weather the show had any chance of being reconsidered. Throughout my years of involvement on independent films along with many years of training as an actress, I now have the confidence to say that all of the greatest special effects and clever camera movements cannot make up for bad acting. This is a common flaw in television shows, especially involving action and /or comedy. Each actor in this show played a major role in it’s success. All extremely talented, in my view Thomas Dekker was the most consistent of the actors to take on john connor without playing an idea. Instead Mr Dekker as well as the entire the cast were living in the moment, a very rare commodity in television that more than anything else, is what makes this show resemble a top notch feature film. I grew up watching Brian Austin Green on 90210, seeing him grow as an actor for over 10 years, he evolved on that show into the actor he is now, worthy of only the best film and TV projects available. You can always catch him thinking, and to be able to show that as an actor to the extent the he can in a suddle manner takes not only a lot of experience, but determination in your craft. This show was a victim of quantity over quality, which is the biggest flaw in the television industry. They choose budgets over talent and the end result being another reality show or a poorly planned and organized TV show that ends up on air even longer. In my view you could keep this show going and knock out five other shows and it would be the same end result, more dead air until that one high quality show comes on. When I begin my film next year I can only hope I have the quality of talent that this show does.

(whispers to myself) “Please let this work”
I honestly dont know where to start , im shattered just like the t-1000.
Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles: had the potential i truly believe that, i live in Australia and we only get shows that you guys in America watch and hopefully get re-newed ( even then i had to wait to buy it on dvd cause our networks are so cheap over here)
Arhh this bums me out so much. ………
And the way it ended (season 2) , John going throught time to the future and all that.
But what really pulled at my heart strings was when John found out that cameron had taken out her chip .
He looked as if he had lost the love of his life.
I think i have as much chance of someone reading this as i do meeting the cast (would be out of this world) and winning the lottery
I’d trade it all to have season 3 truly mean it with every fiber of my being.

Iv never done this email thing about a tv show before but i will be damned if i do nothing at all.

Fox if you dont want the show anymore and there is another company who is interested for the love of God and the fans let it go. I understand that its a business and all and your aim is to make money but you have pulled me in to deep into this show and when i found out that you guys cancelled it i was depressed seriously its my birthday today (September 22nd ) and i turned 28 . Friends were asking me what i wanted and i had to be honest ” All i want is Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles to get a 3rd season nothing else “.

To Thomas mate thanks for the youtube message its nice to know that the actors love there show as much as we do and actually take the time out to tell us all the best of luck for whatever you do mate

Finally to powers that be :: “There is no fate but what we make ourselves” Well im grabbing fate by the horns and im going to wrestle that bastard till theres nothing left ”

! more chance thats all I / WE ask we get the message loud and clear you need the numbers and i partly blame myself for just taking it for granted.

For that i am truly sorry to Thomas, Summer , Lena and the other cast members and the tireless crew

hooroo ( hahaha hopefully see you guys round again real soon)

    Hi guys,
I totally miss this series. Great stories. The special effects could be toned down lots to save money; nice, but not essential. Lots of people would pay lots of good money for the story to continue (in whatever format). Good advertising possibilities, I’m sure. Summary, lots of support for a good story. Ditch the expensive special effects if necessary.
    Miss you guys!
    Chris

  • keketin

I love this show… please bring it back … as a movie or tv show whatever just bring it back! I love lena as sarah connor she was the best and i am not saying the others would be bad but lena was the best in my opinion!
keep it alive i love this show and i’ll never forget it.

  • Natalie

From one perspective I can see that if Fox couldn’t afford to keep the show on, the money spent each week next to average ratings is just a simple profit and loss equation when its on the boardroom table. Having said that it is irresponsable for a network to half tell a story, not to mention the bad name that inconsistency brings. When Fox wants an in house production to work they throw so much money into it, so why don’t you either go out there and sell some more advertising for it or come to another agreement with the producers of the show. It would be very ignorant not to pay attention to all the negative press Fox has recieved from angry fans and viewers.

Wow, I just found TSCC on Netflix, what a great show. I cannot believe they canceled it after only two seasons! Urgh! I hope they do make a movie to tie up all the loose end if they are not going to do another season. This show still had so much potential to explore! Please make the movie!

I think they'd be surprised just how many people would buy the DVD's if they went direct to DVD, without showing it on TV. I know it was big in Australia alone, not to mention the other countries. If it was so bad, why do we get it on pay TV and not free to air TV? TSCC fills in so many gaps that the movies cannot. Bring on TSCC for as many more seasons as necessary by the writer!!

  • Mlbryner
