NBC bought ‘SyFy’ from @AirlockAlpha ..they had the trademark for that and sold it to (they didn’t know it was nbc) a cover for @250K .. had he known what nbc was going to use it for (the SciFi channel) he wouldn’t have sold.

These American remakes of British shows need to stop! Yes, it worked for The Office. Is there any other situation where it hasn’t been a complete failure? I would much rather see the original British versions of the shows than some stupid “Americanized” version.

Wait, I take that back. I enjoyed the US remake of Worst Week. But that was mainly because Kyle Bornheimer is great.

Nice explanation about Syfy, Ace.

I don’t understand why they picked a different spelling for the same term rather than a new word or set of words, altogether. Just because Syfy is spelled differently [dumb], it’s still pronounced “Sci-Fi” and still implies Sci-Fi.

According to the Slice of Sci-Fi podcast, they were once thinking of renaming the network Beyond. At least that term is generic enough, you can show any programming you want, which sounds like what they’re going to do anyway.

I loved the original Prime Suspect. Not sure there is an American actress who can pull that role off. I’ve certainly not seen one of that age range who could play that role without it being a complete joke. Maybe we can find a British one we can import in. Hm. Why bother though? That show was already made and it was in English.

Linda B. — It was for trademark purposes. They couldn’t trademark “SciFi” because it is a generic term for a genre of show. They can trademark “SyFy” because it is made up and so ridiculous that no one else wants it .
