Golden Globe Nominations (TV)

Best Television Series – Drama
MAD MEN
TRUE BLOOD
DEXTER
BIG LOVE
HOUSE

The TV Addict’s Take: Although we’ve been doing this long enough to realize that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) wasn’t about to take this one last opportunity to recognize four seasons of excellence on behalf of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA with a nomination, both FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and LOST could have easily taken the place of HOUSE (Been there, done that, got the T-shirt) and/or TRUE BLOOD (Guilty pleasure yes, Best television drama, not so much)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Jon Hamm, MAD MEN
Hugh Laurie, HOUSE
Michael C. Hall, DEXTER
Simon Baker, THE MENTALIST
Bill Paxton, BIG LOVE

The TV Addict’s Take: Insert BREAKING BAD’s Bryan Cranston for THE MENTALIST’s Simon Baker and we’ll shut up.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Anna Paquin, TRUE BLOOD
Kyra Sedgwick, THE CLOSER
Julianna Marguilies, THE GOOD WIFE
Glenn Close, DAMAGES
January Jones, MAD MEN

The TV Addict’s Take: Based solely on her delivery of the line, “I’m Peggy Olson, and I want to smoke some Marijuana,” MAD MEN’s Elisabeth Moss was robbed.

Best Television Series – Comedy
30 ROCK
THE OFFICE
GLEE
MODERN FAMILY
ENTOURAGE

The TV Addict’s Take: A nomination for ENTOURAGE doesn’t do much to salvage what little credibility the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has left. Particularly when PARKS AND RECREATION, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THE BIG BANG THEORY and WEEDS are left waiting in the wings.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy
Tina Fey, 30 ROCK
Edie Falco, NURSE JACKIE
Toni Collette, THE UNITED STATES OF TARA
Lea Michele, GLEE
Courteney Cox, COUGAR TOWN

The TV Addict’s Take: Proof positive that nothing says comedy like getting multiple slushies thrown in your face comes a much deserved nomination for Hollywood “It” Girl Lea Michele. And yes, the whole singing, dancing, acting triple-threat thing probably played a part as well.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 ROCK
Steve Carell, THE OFFICE
David Duchovny, CALIFORNICATION
Matthew Morrison, GLEE
Thomas Jane, HUNG

The TV Addict’s Take: With apologies in advance for raining on GLEE’s parade, there was very little funny to be found in song-and-dance-man Matthew Morrison’s performance on GLEE. Aside that is from the fact that it took him a good six months to realize his wife was pregnant!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jeremy Piven, ENTOURAGE
Neil Patrick Harris, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
William Hurt, DAMAGES
John Lithgow, DEXTER
Michael Emerson, LOST

The TV Addict’s Take: There should be laws against making voters choose between Neil Patrick Harris (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER), John Lithgow (DEXTER) and Michael Emerson (LOST). We’re just sayin’

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jane Lynch, GLEE
Rose Byrne, DAMAGES
Janet McTeer, INTO THE STORM
Jane Adams, HUNG
Chloe Sevigny, BIG LOVE

The TV Addict’s Take: With all due respect to BIG LOVE’s Chloe Sevigny (who, we’re not gonna lie, scares the bejesus out of us) Jane Lynch FTW!

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
GREY GARDENS
GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
INTO THE STORM
LITTLE DORRIT
TAKING CHANCE

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Drew Barrymore, GREY GARDENS
Jessica Lange, GREY GARDENS
Sigourney Weaver, PRAYERS FOR BOBBY
Anna Paquin, THE COURAGEOUS HEART OF IRENA SENDLER
Joan Allen, GEORGIA O’KEEFFE

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Kenneth Branagh, WALLANDER
Brendan Gleeson, INTO THE STORM
Kevin Bacon, TAKING CHANCE
Chiwetel Ejiofor, ENDGAME
Jeremy Irons, GEORGIA O’KEEFFE

I’m pretty much fine with the nominations except for the LOST snub in the best drama category. I mean, seriously, who puts House above LOST??? And I wish they would break down the supporting actor/actress categories more. There is no reason that Michael Emerson should be up against NPH. That way they could have recognized some of the people who are in Modern Family. Finally, I like Matthew Morrison, but I think there are quite a few actors who deserved that nom more.

  • Hil

Matthew Morrison? For his numerous constipated expressions? For me he’s been the weakest link of the show.

  • Hil

What, no 2 & 1/2 Men? It is just as funny as it ever was. Just think about that for a second…

  • Josh C.

I’m so happy Glee, Lea Michelle and Jane Lynch got a MUCH deserved nod for their parts but i have to agree that Matthew Morrison is a surprise for me since I didnt think he was that strong.

  • Dave

Wow supporting actor will easily be the hardest choice out of the nominees. I honestly would always say Emerson, but Lithgow had such a great part and he played it so perfectly and creepy on Dexter.

  • TVFan

John Noble and Jim Parsons got snubbed WTF!

  • Chris N.

The Big Bang Theory being snubbed is a serious offense. As is Battlestar Galactica being ignored. BSG was one of the finest shows this decade.

  • Mrubinoff

Ed O’Neil is a huge oversight. He is giving a hysterical and at times touching performance on Modern Family.

  • Amy D

I’m pretty pissed that The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons, and HIMYM got snubbed.
But I’m really happy for the cast of Glee and for NPH. 🙂

  • Dave

I totally agree with BBT and Jim Parsons being snubbed but I just can not understand whatsoever how True Blood got nominated. Seriously? I like the show and all but really? Best drama?

  • Trish

I’m very upset at Big Bang being snubbed, Jim Parsons in particular.

I’m ok with Matt Morrison because, while his acting alone wasn’t necessarily award-worthy, the category is actually musical or comedy, which means his musical performances are a factor as well. And, considering that, it does make more sense.

  • J

I don’t know how you can choose between NPH and John Lithgow. They were both brilliant in such different ways. It sucks that the Globes don’t separate drama and comedy for the Supporting Actor race.

Big Bang Theory being snubbed is shocking. It’s the highest rated comedy AND it’s one of the funniest. Isn’t that a combo that should guarantee a nomination?

  • Ace

Look at us all trying to bring logic into this :-P. But seriously, the LOST thing is the biggest mess up. House had their worst season ever and LOST their best. I haven’t even seen Battlestar yet (I’m actually starting to watch this week…the DVD is waiting at home!), but I still agree that it deserves a nom over True Blood. And I have to agree with others that it would have been nice for John Noble to get some love (another product of lumping all of the supporting actors together).

  • Dave

Am I the only one who loves the path House has gone in the last couple seasons? Seems like everyone prefers the old team and older seasons. I always got bored of the same stuff over and over. I like the actual character developement and character driven stories in the last couple seasons a lot more.

  • kevin

ridiculous that curb your enthusiasm got completely snubbed. parks and recreations also deserves more attention. nice to see sigourney weaver get nominated for prayers for bobby, but the kid that played bobby (and the movie itself) should also have gotten nominated.

  • What about SONS OF ANARCHY? At least Katey Segal for Best Actress or Supporting. That show is so ridiculously spellbinding.

  • John

How can you be so hard on True Blood and give a free pass to the painfully dull Big Love? That show does NOT deserve Drama Series or Paxton. Also, I’m kind of annoyed that Showtime is allowed to get Comedy nominations for Edie Falco and Toni Collette when neither of their shows are funny at all. They’re very good, but not funny.

  • shara says

I think that Lost and Sons of Anarchy should have been nominated instead of House and True Blood.

I also think that Jim Parsons and Katey Sagal got robbed. They should both be inundated with awards for their performances this last year.

  • Dave

Wait, where the hell is Ty Burrels nom for best actor in a comedy. His role in modern family has to be the funniest thing about the genious show.

  • Mia

Dave, Im with you! loving HOUSE.
also so glad that Courteney Cox finally got a great nomination!

  • Surprised: that Modern Family got a nom. Go Modern Family.

Bummed: that the Big Bang Theory is outed. WTF.

  • John,
I am in SHOCK that you don’t love BIG LOVE. While I’ll admit that the series started off slow, I implore you to give it a second chance. Last season was off the charts insane and definitely worth a second look.

    Kevin,
Good point about CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. For straight up laughs, it’s almost unmatched, particularly this season’s brilliant SEINFELD arc.

And to everyone who mentioned BIG BANG THEORY, Jim Parsons was in fact robbed. More on that tomorrow.

  • LB

I totally agree about Lost and FNL deserving a best drama nod over House (and yes, True Blood – I love it but it is more of a guilty pleasure). There really needs to be more Lost & FNL recognition (I mean, hello, Kyle Chandler? Connie Britton?).

I’m also sooo with you on Elisabeth Moss being robbed, and both HIMYM and TBBT deserving nods over Entourage (yawn!).

I will be beyond angry if Michael C. Hall gets overlooked for the award again this year.

  • Foghorn

Jim Parsons was SO robbed!!! It’s bad enough that he didn’t get the Emmy but to be completely overlooked for the GG is a disgrace!

I’m also very disappointed that Mariska Hargitay wasn’t included in this year nominations as well. She’s an amazingly talented actress and deserves the nod.

  • Lauren

All I have to say about this is…Courteney Cox? Cougar Town is entertaining enough in that it is mindless comedy but she isn’t that good. Certainly not nomination worthy in my opinion. My vote would be for Julie Bowen from Modern Family to replace her spot on the ballot!

  • Katie

I know it’s way too much to ask since Dollhouse is so far under the radar as to be invisible, but Enver Gjokaj as Victor deserves all the acting kudos possible. He’s possibly the most versatile and talented actor currently working on television.

  • JESSY

~ SIMPLE TO ME … HUGH LAURIE TO WIN THE GOLDEN GLOBE 2010
FOR THE BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES ~ DRAMA.
HIS EXPERIENCE ENSURE IN EACH EPISODE DELIVER A EXCELLENT ACTING PERFORMANCE – SO TALENTED !!
    THUMBS UP !! 🙂

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

  • Felcool

For Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama, they should have put Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost I think. She was okay for all the season 5 but the performance she delivered with Josh Holloway at the end of the season was just amazing, it was really intense.

  • Leslie

I am so happy for Glee! But no Big Bang Theory!?!? Jim Parsons serisouly needs to get an award for this show. Big snub by the Golden Globe people.

  • Wanda

I once again state my shock and dismay at the TOTAL snub of Breaking Bad. WHAT?!! Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, the show itself – there’s nothing better on tv. Boo to the GG’s.
