Our Top 10 TV Shows of 2009
10. BIG LOVE
Once thought of as “that show about the guy who has sex with three women”, BIG LOVE has moved so beyond its initial constraints as to feel like a completely different series. Despite it’s odd (and, to some, off-putting) pacing, the tale of the Henrickson family has become as complex as the religion at its center, thanks in large part to the unforgettable performance of Chloe Sevigny as Nicki, the immature second wife who is torn between her fundamentalist Mormon values and her childish impulses.
Our 2009 TV Year in Review (Part III)
Best In Joke: Everybody knows a long-running show is in trouble when they give established characters a baby or long-lost sibling. So when SUPERNATURAL gave the Winchester boys a bro, the scribes titled the episode “Jump The Shark.”
Most Over-hyped Reality Contestant: The folks at SURVIVOR tried convincing us that Russell was the kind of guy who ate live kittens. Instead, he was all bark and no bite, more imp than demon.
Most Misleading Ad Campaign: Before its debut, commercials for THE GOOD WIFE had us anticipating a juicy political potboiler. What we got instead was a stale courtroom drama. Great performances on behalf of the cast, but not the bill of goods we were sold.
Lamest Kiss: Given the pre-buss buzz, we expected the same-sex liplock between GOSSIP GIRL’s Chuck and Josh to rock our worlds. Instead, it was about as passionate as a grandma’s kiss on the cheek. (Although we did enjoy Chuck saying to Blair, “Do you really think I’ve never kissed a guy before?”)
Best Single Episode: BIG LOVE’s road-trip centric episode, “Come, Ye Saints” gave every member of the Hendrickson clan a major moment as Bill and Nikki’s individual pill-popping secrets came out, Margene got an unwelcome admirer and we all realized why family vacations aren’t what they’re cracked up to be.
Morning Static: SEX AND THE CITY, AMERICAN IDOL, ENTOURAGE & More!
• Get your first look at Sex in the City Sahara, with this just-released trailer for SEX AND THE CITY 2.
• Mark your calendars for February 17th, when AMERICAN IDOL’s seemingly never-ending audition process comes to an end and the real competition begins.
• Life imitates art, as ENTOURAGE’s Turtle (Jerry Ferrera) and Jamie-Lynn Sigler part ways.
• Ex-HBO President sees Starz, with Chris Albrecht signing on to run the competitive pay-cabler.
• Apple prepping TV subscription service, also known as Reason #342 why over-priced cable companies should be afraid, very afraid.
Proof That TV Has Rotted Our Brains!
Since it appears that we are the only TV/DEXTER Addict who didn’t realize that Arthur Mitchell’s daughter Rebecca is played by Vanessa Marano, the very-same actress who first burst onto the scene so unexpectedly as Luke’s daughter, April, on GILMORE GIRLS. It naturally got us thinking…
Would not a small town such as Stars Hollow be the perfect cover for our favorite (Spoiler Alert!) newly widowed anti-hero? Just imagine, Dexter Morgan: Diner owner by day, serial killer by night. It’s the perfect cover! Not to mention, if Taylor Dosey steps out of line even a teensy little a bit….

Our 2009 TV Year in Review (Part II)
Worst Promos Ever: ABC spent a small fortune touting the BROTHERS & SISTERS episode in which someone would die, but it was fans who felt ripped off when nobody actually bought the farm.
Worst Debut: Jimmy Fallon spent weeks courting geeks to LATE NIGHT, only to have first-week guests Justin Timberlake and Tina Fey prove either of them would have been better choices for the job.
Least Compelling Mystery: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES spent an entire year on the wildly uninteresting, unsuspenseful Dave story.
Most Relatable Misunderstanding: What parent couldn’t relate when THE MIDDLE’s Brick truthfully told people that his mom had hit him with a beer bottle? Kids really do say the darndest things!
Biggest Blunder By A Network: The failed experiment we like to call THE JAY LENO SHOW.
Morning Static: SPARTACUS, Alyssa Milano, MAD MEN & More!
Are you entertained! Starz has confidence that you will be, picking up SPARTACUS for a second season a month before the first season even premieres.
• MAD about the holidays? Merry Christmas from Sterling Cooper
• Who’s the Guidette? Alyssa Milano goes JERSEY SHORE!
• From extra to host, Reason #1 why we can’t wait for the Golden Globes.
• You’re a mean one, Mr. [Tony] Cowell, who promises that his famous brother Simon will leave AMERICAN IDOL at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of THE X FACTOR to the U.S. in 2011.
