Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Positives That Might Come Out of UGLY BETTY’s Cancellation

Thanks to fourth season creative resurgence, UGLY BETTY, unlike HEROES, PRISON BREAK and/or NIP/TUCK will go out on top. Particularly since…

…ABC had the courtesy to inform BETTY’s producers early enough to ensure they’ll have the time necessary to craft a satisfying conclusion to the series. Said both the network and producers in a statement released earlier today, “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this UGLY BETTY’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

Creator Silvio Horta will soon have the free time necessary to develop the Marc (Michael Urie) and Amanda (Becki Newton) spin-off fans have been clamouring for. Said Horta in a recent interview with, “Obviously I think Michael [Urie] and Becki [Newton] are amazing but my focus right now is keeping this show going and getting it to a fifth season. That said, anything is possible and of course, out of all the character on the show that have spin-off potential, Marc and Amanda are the most natural choices. They’re terrific and the amazing chemistry they’ve got is so rare.”

Judith Light is now free to thrill daytime fans by returning, for however long or short a stint she wants, to her Emmy-winning role as ONE LIFE TO LIVE’s housewife-turned-hooker, Karen Wolek. While the rest of Mode’s employees can now go back to eating since they no longer have to play stick-thin fashion plates.

The show’s cancelation will free up some real estate on Wednesday night for the addition of both BETTER OFF TED and SCRUBS if ABC really wanted to create the funniest night of TV on television. What too soon? (If it helps, we’re already planning a Michael Urie guest spot on MODERN FAMILY as Mitchell’s ex.)

    I didn’t see this coming…oh wait.

Just waiting for the same news on Scrubs and Better Off Ted.

  • Crazycris

I’m going to go hide under my bed now.

  • BizarroP

yea this is absolutely sad news- but we saw it coming. I just hope that the series ends on a high note and Vanessa Williams finally wins her much deserved Emmy (since the emmy’s love giving that award for that category to shows that get cancelled)

I think there’s a lot of wishful thinking here about the spin-off. If the audience hadn’t dropped off the map, I’m sure that it would be greenlit. Probably not now, unless it was presented as a new show entirely.

And as for Prison Break. They went out on top. The final episodes were amazing, and the DVD conclusion was incredible and well done.

Love your Heroes comment, though I think there are a lot of people who will scream at you saying the show still has a chance for a fifth season. I hope it doesn’t.

  • Leslie

a Mark & Amanda spinoff!?? LOVE!!!!!!!
and having Michael Urie guest as Mitchell’s ex on Modern Family would be hilarious!!!

  • kevin

yeah, if they put scrubs and better off ted in a better timeslot they’re ratings would easily double or even triple. unfortunately, that will probably never happen.

  • Ace

Def saw it coming but it still sucks. I’d love to see a spinoff but I don’t see it happening. Hopefully they will all end up on new shows!

  • bws

You win some, you lose some. In the end, Betty had a good run. And a strong final season should leave everyone with a happy feeling looking back at the show.

Couldn’t’ have said it better myself, and in fact didn’t Here, here!

Will we finally get to see Betty without braces? Perhaps a hawt makeover???

  • paige meyer

i so hope betty gets a makeover and that betty and daniel end up together. it would be nice ending

  • TVFan

As long as Betty doesn’t end up with Daniel I’m okay with the series ending. Four seasons is nothing to feel badly about.

  • Hil

I always figured it would end like the original as far as relationships go. And that is partly why I never completely got fully into any of her numerous other bfs. I figured they’d be temporary anyway.

I am sad to see Ugly Betty go although not surprised at this stage. I do hope that they end the show on a high note like Prison Break did. Many times shows are not given the chance to end properly, such as Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I think UB has gotten better this season but I don’t have the joy watching it that I used to first season. I’m glad it’s ending and has the oppurtunity to go out with a bang.

I think the addition of Adam Rodriguez was great and will give Hilda a happy ending and I would LOVE for Betty and Daniel to get something going before the end. I don’t care I think they are the be all, end all.

  • Josh Emerson

Scrubs and Better Off Ted don’t even get ratings that are as good as Betty’s! lol

I still enjoy UB. But I have to say, I am going to be seriously pissed if they end the show with something happening between Betty and Daniel. They’re like siblings! It would be just as bad as the Gizzie mess on Grey’s except they wouldn’t have any chance to recover creatively.

NBC has five hourse to fill with the end of the Jay Leno show. How about one of those for Ugly Betty?
