Time-Slot Showdown: THE GOOD WIFE vs PARENTHOOD

Attention TV Addicts: Come September, assuming you’re still living in the stone-age (translation: unlucky enough to not own a DVR) you’re screwed you’ve got some fairly big decisions ahead of you. CASTLE versus HAWAII FIVE-0! PARENTHOOD versus THE GOOD WIFE! THE BIG BANG THEORY versus COMMUNITY! Suffice to say, it’s the TV Addict equivalent of Sophie’s Choice. And why, as we inch closer and closer to our favorite time of the year (read: Fall TV!) we’ll be spending some time shining the spotlight on a few of the week’s most compelling time-slot showdowns. Starting with tonight’s 10PM face-off between CBS’s THE GOOD WIFE and NBC’s PARENTHOOD.

In THE GOOD WIFE”s favor: Repeats! Unlike most of Network television these days, CBS cleverly kept their Tuesday night schedule completely intact. Which means, not only do loyal viewers know precisely where to find the show when it returns on September 28th, new fans will have been given ample opportunity to catch up with what they missed. And what they may have missed was a compelling legal drama filled with some soon-to-be Emmy worthy performances and a seemingly endless parade of Broadway guest stars now that LAW & ORDER has left the building.

In PARENTHOOD’s favor: If four remarkable seasons of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT have illustrated anything, it’s that PARENTHOOD showrunner Jason Katims knows his way around the writer’s room. And when you combine his realistic portrayal of family life with a group of immensely likeable veteran actors such as Peter Krause, Lauren Graham and Dax Shepard (among others) there’s very little not to love.

The Winner: Is for you to decide in the comments below. That said, our two cents has THE GOOD WIFE continuing to build on its gargantuan NCIS and NCIS: LOS ANGELES lead-in for a victory in total viewers, with PARENTHOOD’s strong word of mouth and stellar cast helping to keep it close in the much-sought-after 18-49 demo. In short, no biggest loser here.

Parenthood!!! It has so much charm, stellar cast, and intelligent writing. It’s wonderful. The Good Wife didn’t capture my attention the way the Braverman family has!

I´ll be watching Parenthood for sure. I´m so sick of procedurals. Finally some good family drama again.

I’ll be watching Parenthood. I’ve seen every episode so far and I love it, and I also love FNL. I’ve seen the beginning of the Good Wife, but I couldn’t really get into it. I’ve tried to catch up this summer, but I either don’t want to, or my vacation interfered. But I have a DVR, so I’ll probably watch both.

Parenthood for sure. I´m so sick of procedurals. Finally some great family drama again. Plus Lauren Graham is Lauren Graham.

  • I was watching The Good Wife before I watched a single episode of either of the NCISes (which I caught up in the last few weeks), so I'm going to stick with it.
Parenthood, I haven't watched it yet, but I'm not sure I'd be into a slow drama, however good the writing…
I might start watching once it becomes as famous as Friday Night Lights though..

I'll be watching Parenthood. The entire cast is enjoyable and it is different than anything else on my fall schedule. I watched a few reruns of The Good Wife and it just seemed like more of the same.

  • PARENTHOOD. hands down. favorite drama.

  • Mark

The Good Wife is such a typical procedural drama, I have yet to figure out why critics like it so much.

  • Mark,
The reason why I watch THE GOOD WIFE is that it's an atypical CBS procedural. Yes there is the story-of-the-week, but the show tries it's best to keep the focus on the characters and office politics.

Parenthood all the way! Love it! And speaking of FNL, I FINALLY GET TO SEE IT. So if you are like me and came into the FNL game late, catch it at 5pm on ABC Fam!

  • I love Parenthood. My new favorite drama. I'm so excited for new episodes!

    I vote for Parenthood.

I admit I've never watched The Good Wife. But, Parenthood has good characters and a lot of charm. It might sound like a cousin of ABC's Brothers & Sisters, but Parenthood is more down-to-earth and lacks the angst & social/political overtones.

Thanks to cast shake-ups, aging storylines, a forthcoming jump in the timeline, and the aforementioned overtones, I'm seriously considering dropping B&S altogether and letting Parenthood be it's more lighthearted replacement to fill my family drama slot (I can only watch so much TV).

And, *most importantly*, Parenthood has Lauren Graham. Case closed. 😉

I LOVED Parenthood last season. I wish the first season was already out on DVD, I would have rewatched it over the summer. I'm so excited for season two.

  • used this summer to catch up with the good wife, now i'm hooked! but i wont give up parenthood (thank god for DVR)

  • Amy_D259

I'm happy to see all the Parenthood love 🙂
    Parenthood FTW!

Parenthood. My love for Lauren Graham and Peter Krause knows no bounds.

I watched the first half of the season of The Good Wife and it was okay, but Parenthood is so much better. I can't watch that many legal shows anyway b/c the inaccuracies drive me crazy. Much rather watch Lauren Graham.

  • Thankfully I own a DVR, because I certainly would not be able to choose between these two. I enjoy them both equally!
