Britney/Brittany: Were You a Slave 4 GLEE?

When the most entertaining aspect of last night’s heavily-hyped Brittany/Britney episode of GLEE involved Guidance Counsellor Emma Pillsbury’s replenishing her always laugh-out-loud pamphlets (Topics included: “Proper wiping Easy as 1-2-3,” “I still breastfeed… but how old is too old?” and “WOW! There’s hair down there.” ) you know you’re in for a long night. Suffice to say, we’re not a slave 4 Britney Spears. Which unfortunately for GLEE, is the crux of the problem.

The show itself has become (or let’s face it, has always been) the TV equivalent of an iTunes playlists, where ones enjoyment of an episode is entirely derived by how much you relish the week’s song selections. Thus, despite Heather Morris’ “Brittany S. Pierce” getting her much-deserved moment in the spotlight, some fantastically over-the-top production numbers, and enough “quotable quotables” to fill a months worth of “Your Favorite TV Quotes of the Week,” we for one found ourselves wishing we could press the “skip” button throughout the majority of the 44 minute music montage. Agree, disagree, post away in the comments below.

    Agreed. I hated it.

I wish they'd go back to at least pretending they were using the songs to move the story forward. Except for the “Slave 4 U” segment, the other songs could have been used to move foward storylines. Instead, they were thought of as dream sequences. Kinda disappointing.

Still. Matthew Morrison in full on dance and sing mode? Worth it.

I completely loved it. Definitely in my top 5 episodes. For me it was exactly what Rachel said “we kind of grew up with Britney”. Hit me baby one more time came out when I was in grade 8. It's been an interesting ride since then.

I love Britney Spears and the dance numbers were great…but last night's episode sucked bad

Liked I wrote elsewhere, Love Brittany but probably would like the episode more if I liked Britney.

That said, I think we can expect some genuine filler episodes. This one did very little to move the story forward and relied more on a gimmick. I expect to see more episodes like this peppered throughout the season.

  • Gomer

Terrible episode, only liked 2 of the songs. Show should not just do remakes of videos (or limit them like Vogue and Physical). May have been the worst episode of the series so far.

Artist-themed episodes of Glee hurt the series. Good storytelling and plot/character development take a hiatus in lieu of cramming as much artist-stroking into the episode as possible.

Adding insult to the above injury is the fact that only one of the Brittney productions had any “glee” value. Most were simply recreations of the song and/or video. At least the pep-rally production was a glee-club version of a popular song; not the Journey-Don't Stop Believing quality, but more in that direction.

That all being said – love me some Heather Morris and hope she continues to shine, and her character develop.

This was definitely NOT one of my favorite episodes. I think the major issue was the re-creation of the videos. IMO, along with some of the others here, the songs fit so much better then they help to further the storyline and actually fit. This all just seemed very crammed, and second rate to be honest. Hoping next week is better.

PS) The only song I genuinely liked was Toxic. Had a few LOL moments due to the audience and thought their version was great!

  • NancyJ

Was definitely NOT crazy about the episode. It didn't help that I didn't particularly like any of the songs they sang! Any one from Circus would have had me cheering but this was just blah MTV video recreation.
Oh well, hopefully next week's will be better or I can just go back and watch Episode 1 over and over and try to remove this from my memory bank.

Fan of Britney since day one… but to be honest… it was pretty disappointing… like it was said… the way they put the songs in was kind of lazy… Britney got some good songs… ones that can be put to keep the storyline whit no trouble at all…
In the other hand… Brittany S. Pierce just became the best character on the show…

  • lexy

I disagree. This episode was easily one of my favorites. The songs were good, finnchel was amazing, so many good quotes from everybody, finn dancing(which is hilarious), matthew morrison singing/dancing to toxic…i could go on and on.

  • Krystal Nadler

I didn't hate it; but I didn't love it, either. First thing that irked me what them changing the key of Baby One More Time. I hated the song when it was out, but it seriously sounded like Lea was a chipmunk…And Heather Morris should have the entire season, she was so awesome. I crack up nearly every time she speaks a line.

  • Alea

It was perfection to me! I

  • Ali

I loved this episode, but it might be because I grew up with Britney just like the Glee kids. There were so many good Brittany lines, too many to count. I understand why people didn't like it, but I did.

  • Eki

I LOL'd with the “Is this real life” quote…

  • Abby

Hated it – all the music and how every character but Sue and Will idolized Britney Spears – real believable. I don't know anyone in real life that likes her music or finds her “empowering” and yet we're supposed to believe intelligent people like Emma and Kurt think so?
