Your TV Tech Fix: IBM’s Watson is a JEOPARDY Playing Machine… Literally.
This coming February television and technology are going to collide in a bizarre, yet totally awesome way. IBM’s Watson, a JEOPARDY playing supercomputer, is going to take on the game’s two greatest champions, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, over three shows airing February 14th, 15th, and 16th. It’s man versus machine in the biggest thing to happen to the venerable quiz show since Neil Patrick Harris.
But the question is, “Does Watson stand a chance?”
Morning Static: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THE BIG BANG THEORY, MODER FAMILY & More!
• As the Twitter Turns, Eric Braeden defends his exit from HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.
• Big Raise, for BIG BANG THEORY star Kunal Nayyar.
• Is TV ready for tough-but-damaged female hero Jessica Jones? Discuss.
• There’s something about Matt [Dillon], who has been tapped to play Claire’s ex on an upcoming episode of MODERN FAMILY.
• Fun Fact: Had PARENTHOOD not been moved to Mondays, “Big” and “Aidan” would be duking it out over Carrie viewers in 2011.
• Awwwww Alert! Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson exchange gifts.
ABC Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
The Good: Suffice to say, “good” doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface when it comes to THE MIDDLE, BETTER WITH YOU, MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN, ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block that may in fact be laugh-for-laugh, our favorite televised two hours of the week. Also falling under the category of good are aging dramas DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, BROTHERS & SISTERS and GREY’S ANATOMY, all of which rebounded nicely after lacklustre seasons in both the viewership and more importantly, the creative departments. Meanwhile, on the reality TV front, DANCING WITH THE STARS continued to steamroll the competition on Mondays, which bring us to…
The Bad: Bristol Palin won’t be on the Spring Edition of DWST, which means ABC executives should probably brace themselves for the inevitable dip in ratings. And while we’re on the subject of disappointing ratings, new Fall offerings such as the now defunct MY GENERATION, DETROIT 1-8-7 and personal favorite NO ORDINARY FAMILY haven’t exactly lived up to the hype. And don’t even get us started on SKATING WITH THE STARS.

Neil Patrick Harris Calls Daytime Star Out!
Holy star wars! It looks like Doogie Howser has declared war on Victor Newman! Earlier today, Neil Patrick Harris (Barney, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER) took Eric Braeden (aka THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ tyranical tycoon, Victor) to task via twitter. “Eric Braeden is a D-Bag,” read Harris’ tweetstream of the daytimer who has guested on HIMYM in the past as the father of the character Robin. “The actor… agreed to do a cameo, then last night bailed, saying the part wasn’t ‘substantial’ enough.” Shortly after, Harris sent a follow-up tweet reading, “We’ve recast with Ray Wise, a fantastic actor who makes any part ‘substantial.’ Super excited to welcome him to the family!” Ironically, Braeden’s character on the Geano City-based soap is well known for regularly disowning members of the Newman clan who disappoint him.
We Cast ABC’s BEING ERICA Reboot
Following yesterday’s news that has ABC developing a U.S. version of the Canadian hit BEING ERICA, it was only natural that our twitter stream flooded with suggestions as to who would be the perfect actress to take the reins from Canada’s Erica (Erin Karpluk). That said, despite some truly fantastic suggestion from the likes of @insidethetube, @tvdonewright and @ruebenrambling, who got the ball rolling with such deserving actresses as Shiri Appleby (LIFE UNEXPECTED), Autumn Reeser (NO ORDINARY FAMILY), and Katie Cassidy (GOSSIP GIRL) respectively, we’ve compiled what we believe to be, the definitive dream cast. See for yourself, after the jump.
