If you’re anything like this TV Addict, odds are fairly certain that since reading Tiffany Vogt’s fantastic piece from earlier in the day in which she pulled back the curtain on the 16,000 or so Nielsen families whose viewing habits play far too an integral role in dictating what shows remains on the air, you’ve been asking yourself one simple question: How do I become a Nielsen Family? Is there not a better way?
What’s more, how is it that the Network and Cable companies have continued to allow Nielsen — an antiquated service that seems inexplicably adverse to changing with the times — a monopoly when it comes to measuring who watches television when.

We Charge DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES Creator Marc Cherry with Crimes Against Hilarity
After almost seven seasons of mystery and mayhem, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES’ uncanny ability to keep us on our toes has never ceased to amaze. Unfortunately, the most amazing thing about this season thus far has been the shabby treatment of star Vanessa Williams. Despite the show’s spotty track record when it comes to handling new additions to Wisteria Lane (see: Alfre Woodard, Dana Delany, Drea De Mateo, among others), words cannot express our shock and awe as to the way in which creator Marc Cherry, not to mention the entirety of the HOUSEWIVES writing staff have handled the award-winning Williams. Once a staple in our weekly collection of TV quotes of the week courtesy of her flair for transforming even the smallest line of dialogue into a memorable one, this season of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES has relegated her to little more than a bit player. An ugly role that is not at all befitting a talent who consistently had us in stitches for the better part of four season on UGLY BETTY. We’re just sayin’
The Nielsen Conundrum: Why An Entire Nation of TV Addicts Are Being Held Hostage By 16,000 Viewers
If you are a television viewer today, you probably have scratched your head in bewilderment at how television ratings are determined. Essentially, if you are not one of the privileged few with a Nielsen black box, then you are simply a calculated-statistic based on the viewing patterns of one of those 16,000 who may be in the same age group as you – regardless of the fact that you may have better taste in television shows.
