Kunal Nayyar Reacts to THE BIG BANG THEORY’s Shocking Season Finale

Is your jaw still smarting from last May’s jaw-dropper of a BIG BANG THEORY season finale that saw a very inebriated Raj and Penny hook up? Well, perhaps you can take solace in the fact that you’re not the only one.

“Understandably, I was quite surprised when that happened,” revealed Raj’s real-life alter ego Kunal Nayyar who was on hand in Toronto Canada alongside cast members Simon Helberg (Wolowitz), Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) and Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler) to help launch CTV’s 2011-12 Fall schedule. “There was no indication during the season that we were leading up to that so when I read it was like, ‘Okay… cool’.”

And while “cool,” may in fact be the understatement of the century when it comes to getting to spend an afternoon on set fictitiously flirting with the beautiful Kaley Cuoco (Penny), the question remains: Was Raj and Penny’s impromptu night of passion a one time thing, or should fans prepare themselves for “Renny?”

Not surprisingly, Nayyar — who was a little too quick to point out that he won’t have the foggiest idea until the writers return to work and production resumes in August — has a few ideas of his own, just in case BIG BANG Boss Bill Prady happens to be reading this.

“To be honest, my first instinct to what happened is that perhaps Raj should try to apologize to Leonard and rebuild that friendship first,” admits Nayyar. “But on the other hand, it would be pretty cool to date Penny too.”

New episodes of THE BIG BANG THEORY returns to CBS on Thursdays at 8PM this Fall (CTV in Canada)

It does seem like a one-time thing. Leonard will already look at this as a huge betrayal, and I don’t think Raj would risk losing his friendship with Leonard.
