Dispatches From The Couch

In our ongoing effort to watch anything and everything that’s on television, Thursday afternoon found us trying to get through an episode of ABC’s new daytime chatter, THE REVOLUTION.

Please know that the operative word in the previous sentence was “trying.” Because man, we haven’t seen such a hot mess of a show since WORKING IT.

For the initiated, THE REVOLUTION is a rip-off of every lifestyle show to ever hit the airwaves. Now, this in and of itself isn’t necessarily something worth getting one’s knickers in a knot over. After all, there are whole cable channels filled with exactly this same sort of dreck. (We’d ask why the airwaves needed another show in this particular genre, but the answer — based on THE REVOLUTION’s dismal ratings — is that it didn’t.) But what makes this show so particularly odious is that ABC yanked a 43-year-old scripted drama, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, in order to give us yet another reality offering. (The net also pulled ALL MY CHILDREN last year and replaced it with the equally unnecessary, if not quite as badly executed, THE CHEW.)

The episode we watched focused on cheating. Now, on the off-chance that you were drawn in by the show’s website blurb which asked “What or whom did Tim Gunn cheat on?”, the answer will no doubt disappoint your scandal-loving little heart: As the show opened, Gunn admitted that he’d cheated on a test in third grade. Not to be outdone, “Celebrity Trainer” Harley Pasternak — who looks like a fitter and somehow creepier Howie Mandel — confessed to having tried tricking a girl into thinking he could play the saxophone in sixth grade. A minute or two later, relationship guru Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry (and really, if you take advice from a grown woman who spells her name Tiffanie, you get what you deserve) awkwardly threw in that hard economic times lead to more people cheating on their significant others.

Anyone fearing the show was about to delve into a potentially interesting topic needed not fear, for Gunn was on hand to make the most awkward segue ever by changing the topic to fashion cheats. This was followed by the PROJECT RUNWAY fashionista weirdly groping a Styrofoam mannequin’s breasts and butts as real woman raved about his insightful tips. Such as? Well, that high heels make one appear “longer.”

And that, right there, was the problem.

THE REVOLUTION is the worst titled show since COUGAR TOWN. Just as that wonderful sitcom has become so much more than its original premise, this train wreck of a reality show is about as revolutionary as the missionary position. The awkward panel is stolen from The View, the medical segments are about as informative as the nutritional information on a box of Count Chocula, fashion segments seem like an excuse to stand beneath a giant advertisement for Macy’s and erstwhile host Ty Pennington just looks like he’d rather be anywhere else.

Judging by the ratings, he’s not the only one.

For all the latest TV news and reviews

  • Amen my friend. The Revolution is a joke. It’s the Repulsion that’s eroding ABC and turning viewers off. It should be canned ASAP.

When is ABC going to cancel this train wreck of a show? They have no problem cancelling their Prime Time failures quick, fast, and in a hurry (Working It) why not this 1?  Is it because they’re afraid they know that they made a HUGE mistake cancelling OLTL?  I think so.

  • I agree ABC made a huge mistake by cancelling the soaps and the replacement shows stink big time. They need to admit to making a mistake and do the right thing now!

  • Patsybutler

And the Chew is to and i hope thay do take them off and put our soaps back on tv.

  • Funny thing is .. ABC/Disney thought The Revulsion was a better choice for 3 millions OLTL viewers. What a joke.

  • I will be overjoyed when ABC/D listen to it’s viewers and put our soaps back on.

  • so you were the one viewer watching-ABC needs to KILL R NOW…

  • Love your article !! I think it was funny too !!! Poor ABC/Disney, I feel bad for you, NOT !!!!! You can not replace a beloved daytime drama that has been on for 43 yrs with juke like the Revolution !!! Karma, it is biting you right where it counts !!

  • Klombarod6

Your need to prove that the soaps didnt belong on tv I think was a big mistake your shows are like all the other stations shows and its very boaring to the rest of us who were loyal soap fans. I think that you should bring the soaps back and im sure your ratings would sore.

  • Thank you  for this  article.    This  show  is  a mess  as you  stated,  but  to be  expected  for  ABC  is  grasping  at  straws  to justify  reasons  for  cancelling  Their  Soaps,   Now we  are  wondering  if  they finally realize  their  mistakes   and  release  the  rights  back  to Agnes Nixon  so she  can find  them a new  home.   Also, at  the  same  time   I am wondering  if  Anne Sweeney will keep her  word as  she  stated  and  cancel  the  lowest  ranking  daytime  show  which is  the  Revolution  and  keep  General  Hospital.    Shame  on you  ABC/DISNEY you  are  self destroying  your  own  network   (Maybe  that  was  their  great  plan  afterall?)

I agree with the comment below so I just had to repeat it!
ABC, recognize your mistake and make TV history – bring back One Life To Live!

So ABC, if you will not realize your mistake cancelling OLTL and APPARENTLY do not care about the millions of viewers you lost, then release the rights back to Agnes Nixon so she can find  a new home for One Life To Live!!!!!

  • Bring back AMC and OLTL!!!!

  • That what ABC gets for canceling One Life To Live NO one is watching the Revolution ABC should cancel it and bring back the soaps!

  • Michelle

The revolution needs to be cancelled! The sooner the better. If ABC had any business sense they would be reorganizing One Life To Live and promptly bring it back from the dead. After all if OLTL’s Mitch Lawrence can defy death and be brought back from the dead multiple times, reviving the wonderfully successful and ratings hit OLTL should be easy. Come on ABC get reactive. You tried, you failed, now learn your lesson and fix it.

I wish ABC would realize and except that they made a HUGE mistake in taking AMC & OLTL off the air and cancel the new shows and bring back our soaps. At the very least they need to sell the rights back to Agnes Nixon so the shows can continue elsewhere. We miss our soaps and will NEVER watch any replacement show over our soaps. NEVER!!!!!!!

AMEN!! Thank you for a fabulous article. What a travesty ABC has taken beloved iconic shows and replaced them with this garbage that is already poluted on other networks, including their own. LISTEN UP ABC! Your viewers have spoken! We want OLTL back!!

  • Sara

ABC/Disney sucks…………….won’t watch anything on these networks, except my beloved General Hospital…….

  • “…this train wreck of a reality show is about as revolutionary as the missionary position.”  THAT sums it all up.  “The Revolution” is a Mickey Mouse produced show which not only is an insult to viewers but an insult to the “lifestyle” genre.

  • ABC cancelled a popular daytime show with millions of long time viewers to put on this garbage.  This is the biggest flop I’ve seen in my lifetime.  Bring our soaps back and take off this trash!

  • Thank you for this article– It made me smile : )
ABC needs to bring back AMC and OLTL– if they want their viewers back

  • Twiladritenour

Abc/ Disney needs to read this! There are nothing but negative comment’s about their travesty’s of replacement shows! I read through every comment and there isn’t one positive comment about the revolution or the chew. Not one! Get a clue people! Your little attempt to control us didn’t work! It backfired! Now come to your senses and rectify the mistake before it completely destroys your network!

  • Deb

Agnes Nixon’s life work was taken away and away from all of us AMC & OLTL Fans for this crap???
    Shame on you ABC & Disney… :(((((

So I’m guessing this article was shared on a soaps blog?  ha ha   🙂

  • One more reason ABC has permanently left my TV screen.  I still watch GH out of solidarity with my fellow soap fans, but that’s it…replacing OLTL with this boil on the butt of humanity was the LAST STRAW!

  • Is there anyone out there surprised?
To paraphrase the Soup Nazi: No more ABC for us!

  • Cheaper production cost doesn’t = more money for the greedy, deep pockets of the ABC/Disney exec’s.  Give us back our soaps and maybe your rating both daytime and prime time will rise back to the top, where ABC used to be.

  • Yes this so true.TV is so bad except for GH my TV is never going back to ABC except for GH.Really ABC you get rid of 2 forty year hits (one under budget) for this. You think we will watch your news or prime time either,no.Us viewers will be true to NBC and CBS because they kept soaps on during day time.BYE bye ABC!

  • ABC is going to ride this train wreck until it crashes and bursts into flames… oh well.

  • this was well put, abc has made a horrible mistake when they put this train wreck together from what it sounds like guess they didnt realize that putting all these shows together in one would be something that would bore anyone to tears

  • What a mess!  To think a wonderful show like One Life to Live was sacrificed for this!  Hopefully ABC/Disney will wake up and realize they’ve gone down the wrong path.

  • Tashilili

Hallelujah, someone that agrees with me! I refuse to have any tv of mine tuned to ABC between 1 PM and 3PM. I switch over for General Hospital only! I hope they lose SOOOOO much money in those two time slots that they finally realize what they lost when they cancelled AMC and OLTL and humble themselves enough to bring back GOOD shows that millions of people loved and cared about!

  • Pure disgust on how Disney pulled ABC to kill Americana shameful.Bob Iger got his start on Ryan’s Hope.No Hope for this show and when it fails what will Disney do? Blame it on soap fan or maybe the affliates.Stand up Disney and except the blame correct it sell the soaps or bring them back.
