Summer TV Preview: Welcome to HELL ON WHEELS Season Two, A Purgatory From Which No One Escapes
The second season of the AMC drama series HELL ON WHEELS takes us back to the post-Civil War era at the dawn of the industrial era. Railroad barons were obsessed with nation-building and the race across the continent in order to secure the future of the United States as a country worthy of competing in the global market. No longer hindered by in-fighting after surviving a bloody civil war that nearly tore the nation apart, it was a time of blossoming freedom and unfettered greed. Yet with the wounds fresh on their bodies and hearts from the recent bloodshed, it was also a time of healing. Everyone wanted to forget the war and move on, but it was a burden everyone bore upon their souls. [Read more…]

The TV Addict is Going on Hiatus!
Even Addicts need a break.
Which is why, after yet another exciting television season, your very own TV Addict is once again pressing pause on our Cal Ripken-esque streak of daily postings and hightailing it outta here.
Assuming of course our cruise doesn’t take a page from that other famous ocean-liner’s playbook, regularly scheduled posting — featuring a slew of fantastic interviews and scoop from the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour — will resume on Sunday August 11th.
Bon Voyage,
Daniel (@thetvaddict)
P.S. For all seven of you are curious as to where in the world the TV Addict is heading, feel free to follow us on instagram.

Dispatches From The Couch: We Get What We Deserve
Upon hearing that Courtney Stodden — you know, the trashy teen who married that much older dude from LOST? — would be appearing on VH1’s reality show COUPLES THERAPY, I couldn’t help but think of Russian roulette.
How, you might wonder, did I make the leap from the human freak show to a game in which people willingly put a gun to their heads and hope it’s not loaded? I blame the movie Live!
In the 2007 flick, Eva Mendes plays a network exec (Hey! It could happen!) who is desperate for a hit. Off a casually flip remark from a co-worker, she comes up with the idea to telecast a game of Russian roulette. Five contestants will walk away with a cool $5,000,000 each… and one won’t walk away period. What ensues is a fascinating debate about what can and can’t be aired on television. But just as important is the parallel debate between what people will and won’t actually tune in for.
Would America really watch a show that, in essence, boils down to assisted suicide?
In the movie, the answer is “yes.” [Read more…]
OLYMPICS! BIG BROTHER! DR. HORRIBLE! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
Worst Excuse: NBC claimed it was not live-streaming the Olympic opening ceremonies because the event involved “complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online” and required “context” which “our award-winning production team will provide.” Instead, Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira provided running commentary that was as embarrassing as it was intrusive and endless.
Silliest Move: CBS is insisting upon moving forward with its lawsuit against ABC’s GLASS HOUSE despite the show being pretty much a failure and the season being almost over. Legal costs, be damned!
Most Accurate Criticism: Time magazine’s TV critic, James Poniewozik, tweeted of the Olympics that “NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for.”
Why Your Favorite Nerds Will Be Depressed This Weekend: The only bright spots in MSNBC’s normally-scheduled weekend parade of LOCKDOWN episodes — UP WITH CHRIS HAYES and THE MELISSA HARRIS PERRY SHOW — will be sidelined again this weekend for Olympic coverage.
Best Thing To Happen To October Since Halloween: The CW announced that DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG will air on October 9. [Read more…]
