Characters are the most important part of any show; at least that’s how I look at it. They make you feel for them, hate them, and fall madly in love with them. I decided to make a list of my top ten favorite television characters of all time! (In order) Feel free to comment and let me know if you agree/ disagree, and who your favorite characters are!
Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren (Uzo Aduba) ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
I pretty much love every character Jenji Kohan has ever created. Although, Crazy Eyes would have to my favorite, Kohan’s characters are so raw and always come from this dark place and you somehow always find yourself rooting for them, even though you know you probably shouldn’t. Originally I was going to pick Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) as my number 10 but then “I’m gonna call you dandelion because they’re pretty and yellow, just like you” popped into my head and I realized, Crazy Eyes is way too hilarious and perfect to not be on this list.
Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) BOY MEETS WORLD
Aka the first TV character I ever had a crush on. For real, what 90’s kid didn’t have a crush on Shawn? He was the cool and collected, best friend to Corey Matthews (Ben Savage) and he always knew what to say. He came from a trailer park and a broken home but he had such a huge heart. And let’s not forget about that haircut in the early years, SO CUTE!
Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer) 30 ROCK
He maybe the strangest and nicest character of all time, but there is no doubt how loyal and passionate Kenneth is about NBC. I adore the way he speaks and can listen to him ramble on about his farming roots for days. I love that the joke of the show was that he is immortal and basically a ghost. My favorite scene with Kenneth is when he sings “Midnight Train To Georgia” right at the line where he says “I missed it” and then proceeds to talk about the train delay and why he missed the train. It’s a simple scene but so, so funny!
Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) ALIAS
If asked most people can recall the oldest show they remember watching. Most children watched BARNEY, or SESAME STREET, but not me. Instead, the first show I remember watching (and loving) is the J.J. Abrams’ spy drama, ALIAS. I remember watching it with my dad and being completely mesmerized. I would run around the house and pretend I was Sydney and that I had to go on missions for SD-6. Looking back I realize how ridiculous it was that my parents let a six and a half year old watch that, but I am so glad they did. Sydney will always be one of my absolute favorite TV characters, and ALIAS will always be one of my favorite shows.
Huck (Guillermo Diaz) SCANDAL
Shonda Rhimes always talks about how she creates characters that aren’t all good, and how they aren’t perfect. Huck is the perfect example of that. He is loyal and kind and all of those nice things to Olivia (Kerry Washington) and the other associated but sometimes we forget he’s a killer. He’s tortured people and is definitely not mentally stable, but that’s why I love his character. I love that he can be all of those horrible things but yet we love him, we root for him. Guillermo Diaz was incredible on WEEDS but I think SCANDAL is his best acting yet!
Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) PARKS AND RECREATION
I LOVE AMY POEHLER! This isn’t news to anyone who knows me or has read any of my other articles. She is incredible in anything and everything that she does. Although, I would have to say her portrayal as Councilwoman Knope has to be my favorite. She is so kind and passionate about the parks department, and she cares so much about everyone. I love that she’s known for giving the best gifts, and that her love of waffles is unmatchable.
Nick Andopolis (Jason Segel) FREAKS AND GEEKS
I started watching FREAKS AND GEEKS about a year and a half ago when I first got a Netflix account and it was such a great decision. Not only did I completely fall in love with the series, I completely fell in love with adorable, funny, and perfect Nick. His character was so emotional and sensitive, all he wanted was to date Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and play the drums.
Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
My favorite episode of any show ever is “Slap Bet” the episode of HIMYM where the gang finds out that Robin was a teenage pop star in Canada. From that moment on I was the biggest Robin fan out there. Her snarky remarks and tough guy demeanor was so different for a female lead and was nothing like I’d ever seen on television before. I loved how she was one of the guys but yet was so girly. I loved that she was passionate about her career (not so much about PATRICE!) and never gave up on it.
Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
A character has never made me laugh harder than Buster has. When his arm was taken off by a seal I couldn’t believe the show had done that, I realized the how insane and wonderful this show was. I loved that Buster would have panic attacks and went to college for just about everything but wasn’t capable of doing anything. I loved how he dated a woman who shared the name of his mother and that he is probably the biggest mama’s boy there is. He is hands down the funniest character I’ve ever seen on television.
Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) GREY’S ANATOMY
Lexipedia is my favorite character of all time! When we first met her on GREY’S ANATOMY we didn’t want to like her, we wanted to hate her because she was Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) half sister who had everything Meredith didn’t. But eventually Meredith realized how adorable and wonderful she was and accepted her as her sister. Much like how we all completely caved and found ourselves LOVING Lexie Grey. Her character showed so much promise and so much growth. When Lexie died in the plane crash I was so beyond upset that I would have to continue watching one of my favorite shows without my favorite character. I’m still not okay with it. Chyler Leigh is incredible and her portrayal of Lexie was incredible, hands down my favorite character of all time!
Victoria Nelli loves TV so much that she is paying $30,000 a year to learn about it in College. When she’s not learning about TV she enjoys writing about her favorite shows, interviewing anyone in the industry that will let her, and ranting about how underrated Parks and Recreation is. She is very much aware of her Netflix addiction, and no she will not be seeking help anytime soon. You can follow her on Twitter @VictoriaNelli
