Fox CEOs on the Future of THE X-FILES: Is Another Season Coming?

THE X-FILES returned earlier this year as an event series on Fox, 14 years after the original series had ended. And the event series ended with a cliffhanger, prompting fans to wonder if another season is on the way.

During a call this morning about Fox’s 2016-2017 schedule, CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman said that they are hopeful for another season. They’ve spoken with executive producer Chris Carter — as well as stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson — and everyone seems eager to do another season. The trick, of course, has to do with scheduling. Everyone is very busy and getting them all together will be difficult.

There’s definitely nothing definitive to announce right now, but there is hope for the future. They’ve also had conversations that included discussions of what kind of episodic order makes sense. Some of it will be driven by the actors/producers’ schedules and how much time they have. Everyone, including Chris, David, Gillian, the network and the studio want to do more, but X-FILES fans shouldn’t really anticipate news until the 2017-2018 season. Walden and Newman, however, are hopeful they’ll be announcing another season at next year’s Upfronts call. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see.
