SUPERNATURAL: Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles Preview the Midseason Finale and the Wayward Sisters Spin-off

SUPERNATURAL is taking a second shot at launching a spin-off, but this time they’re primarily using characters known to fans of the show. If picked up, WAYWARD SISTERS will feature Jody Mills, Donna Hanscom, Clair Novak, Alex Jones, and new characters from season 13 such as Patience and Kaia.

The introduction to the spin-off will begin in the midseason finale, with the spin-off episode officially airing on January 18 when the show returns from its winter hiatus. While not all of the women will appear in the midseason finale, you will see characters such as Jody and Claire and be introduced to Kaia.

During our visit to the set of SUPERNATURAL in Vancouver, we spoke with stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles about the spin-off and the set-up for it in the midseason finale. Jack will resurface in the midseason finale and he’ll be attempting to save Mary Winchester from the alternate dimension because he wants to prove to the brothers that his powers can be used for good, according to Alexander Calvert. To achieve this he’ll team up with Kaia, a dreamwalker. But Jack’s attempt leaves the Winchesters in a dangerous situation.

“Episode 9 builds up to [the spin-off episode] and we see Sam and Dean in a situation where they are out of sorts and they need help. And so [in episode 10 in January] Jody is calling to check in or maybe tell us about a case and she can’t get ahold of us. And we’re not returning her calls. So she reaches out to her wayward daughter of sorts [Claire Novak] and says ‘hey, I think something’s going with the boys. I know you’re out doing your thing but they were there for us when we needed them, I think we need to be there for them’,” Padalecki said.

“I also love the fact that it’s a direct homage to the beginning of Supernatural in how it’s coming together,” Ackles added. “Because Jody calls Claire and says ‘the boys have been on a hunting trip and haven’t been home in a few days’. Which is the exact same thing that Dean said to Sam in episode 1, that Dad has been [on a hunting trip]. I love that aspect of it, that….the genesis of both of them are very similar in that aspect. Obviously the stories will be a little different, but it is this gathering of characters to go and save their friends. Or their family. So right then and there that’s a great foundation to build stories on.”

The midseason finale of SUPERNATURAL airs on December 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
