THE FLASH cast and producers came to San Diego Comic-Con to unveil footage from season 5 and tease what’s in store for the new season. A big piece of news is that the new season’s big bag will be Cicada, played by Chris Klein. He’s described as a “mysterious cult leader who is a little obsessed with The Flash” in the comics. In the show he’s not really a cult leader, although his powers are something Team Flash hasn’t been dealt with before. Warner Bros describes him as “a grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans, Cicada now seeks to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time.”
Other teasers for the new season include the following:
- Grant Gustin said that the season 5 premiere is the “best first episode since the pilot”.
- The introduction of Nora is a brand new dynamic for the show. Nora is “pretty clingy to Barry and we don’t really know why,” according to Gustin. But she’s “a little more distant towards Iris”. Candice Patton thinks it’s weird to see Nora and Barry bond so easily, while Nora spends more time ignoring Iris. This leads Iris to question whether she’s an absent mother like her own mother.
- Which Harrison Wells will we be meeting in season 5? “We’re going to kick off the season with a newer Wells who has come to join these people”, according to Tom Cavanagh. He’s called Sherloque Wells and he’ll be very intelligent, but maybe can’t be trusted.
- We’ll be seeing more of a “bromance” between Cisco and Wells. Carlos Vales said that Cisco’s processing of the breakup with Gypsy will lead to Ralph encouraging Cisco’s “bachelorhood to thrive.”
- In the first few episodes we’ll see Cecile and Joe “recover” from the birth of their new baby — one that took place under crazy circumstances. Danielle Nicolet also teased that Cecile will be returning to work and will have to juggle having a baby and an important job.
- In season 5 Cisco’s “powers will be challenged in a way that they’ve never been challenged before,” according to Valdes. “There’s some trials and tribulations” ahead of him.
- Despite Killer Frost seemingly have disappeared for a while last season, season 5 will feature Caitlin finding out more about what makes Killer Frost, Killer Frost. We’ll definitely see her alter ego again and we’ll learn more about how and why she got the powers (which didn’t come from the particle explosion).
- We will get to see Iris return to her journalist roots. Barry will return to his job as a CSI in the police department. We’ll also explore the detective side of Ralph more in season 5.
- Tom Cavanagh will be directing the show’s 100th episode.
- Episode 8 will be the big FLASH mid-season finale.
- Is there death in the future? Apparently there will be “a lot of deaths this season.”
- There will be an LGBTQ character this season, although producer Todd Helbing wouldn’t share any other details at this time.
- The theme of season 5 is “legacy”. Everyone is “thinking about what it means after they leave,” according to Helbing.
- There’s a special episode coming up with two fan favorite villains — they are trying to get King Shark and Grodd together in an episode (it will likely be in the second half of the season).
THE FLASH returns for a new season on October 9 on The CW.
