Best Television Series – Drama
AMERICAN HORROR STORY (FX)
BOARDWALK EMPIRE (HBO)
BOSS (Starz)
GAME OF THRONES (HBO)
HOMELAND (Showtime)

Prediction: What do you get when you combine the excitement of a Broadcast Network series such as 24 with the acting chops and gratuitous amounts of nudity traditionally reserved for the likes of premium cable? A Golden Globe for HOMELAND, the season’s most buzzed about, and let’s face it, deserving new series.

Best Performance By An Actress – Drama
Claire Danes (HOMELAND)
Mireille Enos (THE KILLING)
Julianna Marguilies (THE GOOD WIFE)
Madeleine Stowe (REVENGE)
Callie Thorne (NECESSARY ROUGHNESS)

Prediction: If the Hollywood Foreign Press can restrain themselves from rewarding REVENGE’s Madeleine Stowe with an award for returning to relevance thanks to her admittedly delicious — albeit not-so-award-worthy — portrayal of Victoria Grayson, expect child star turned good Claire Danes to walk away a winner.

Best Performance By An Actor – Drama
Steve Buscemi (BOARDWALK EMPIRE)
Bryan Cranston (BREAKING BAD)
Kelsey Grammer (BOSS)
Jeremy Irons (THE BORGIAS)
Damian Lewis (HOMELAND)

Prediction: Despite what most pundits would agree is a no-brainer of a winner in BREAKING BAD’s Bryan Cranston, our money’s on former FRASIER star Kelsey Grammer for his career redefining turn in BOSS.

Best Television Series – Comedy
ENLIGHTENED (HBO)
EPISODES (Showtime)
GLEE (FOX)
MODERN FAMILY (ABC)
NEW GIRL (FOX)

Prediction: The type of consistent laugh-out-loud moments MODERN FAMILY manages to deliver on a week-in-and-week out basis is why awards shows like this exist.

Best Performance By An Actress – Comedy
Laura Dern (ENLIGHTENED)
Zooey Deschanel (NEW GIRL)
Tina Fey (30 ROCK)
Laura Linney (THE BIG C)
Amy Poehler (PARKS AND RECREATION)

Prediction: If first season wins for the likes of ALIAS’ Jennifer Garner, FELICITY’s Keri Russell and UGLY BETTY’s America Ferrera has illustrated anything over the years, it’s that NEW GIRL’s Zooey Deschanel best me making room on her mantle.

Best Performance By An Actor – Comedy
Alec Baldwin (30 ROCK)
David Duchovny (CALIFORNICATION)
Johnny Galecki (THE BIG BANG THEORY)
Thomas Jane (HUNG)
Matt LeBlanc (EPISODES)

Prediction: Expect Matt LeBlanc to be thanked for being a FRIEND. Also not hurting his chances, the fact that his self-deprecating turn as a somewhat skewed version of himself was one of the funniest things to traipse across our small screen since Lisa Kudrow’s COMEBACK.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
CINEMA VERITE (HBO)
DOWNTON ABBEY (MASTERPIECE, PBS)
THE HOUR (BBC AMERICA)
MILDRED PIERCE (HBO)
TOO BIG TO FAIL (HBO)

Prediction: If you even for a moment think that anything outside of the smash PBS series is going to walk away with the award for “Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television” you clearly have yet to spend anytime in DOWNTON.

Best Performance By An Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Romola Garai (THE HOUR)
Diane Lane (CINEMA VERITE)
Elizabeth McGovern (DOWNTON ABBEY)
Emily Watson (APPROPRIATE ADULT)
Kate Winslet (MILDRED PIERCE)

Prediction: Simply put, Kate Winslet could have spent six hours reading a phone book and still walked away with an award for her work in HBO’s Mildred Pierce… which incidentally would have been almost as entertaining as the seemingly never-ending story for which she was nominated.

Best Performance By An Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Hugh Bonneville (DOWNTON ABBEY)
Idris Elba (LUTHER)
William Hurt (TOO BIG TO FAIL)
Bill Nighy (PAGE EIGHT)
Dominic West (THE HOUR)

Prediction: THE HOUR’s Dominic West. If for no other reason than the only thing the Hollywood Foreign Press love more than poking fun at captains of industry (see: 30 ROCK’s Alec Baldwin) is poking fun at themselves (Note: For those who have yet to see the fantastic British series, West plays a newsman circa the television industry’s early days).

Best Performance By An Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jessica Lange (AMERICAN HORROR STORY)
Kelly Macdonald (BOARDWALK EMPIRE)
Maggie Smith (DOWNTON ABBEY)
Sofia Vergara (MODERN FAMILY)
Evan Rachel Wood (MILDRED PIERCE)

Prediction: Despite our slight bias for DOWNTON ABBEY’s Maggie Smith, who not only steals every scene she’s in — but in doing so — solidifies her status as Britain’s Betty White equivalent. Jessica Lange’s remarkable performance in AMERICAN HORROR STORY was just about the only thing both critics and fans could agree upon when it came to the remarkably divisive FX series.

Best Performance By An Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Peter Dinklage (GAME OF THRONES)
Paul Giamatti (TOO BIG TO FAIL)
Guy Pearce (MILDRED PIERCE)
Tim Robbins (CINEMA VERITE)
Eric Stonestreet (MODERN FAMILY)

Prediction: If the first rule of GAME OF THRONES is to “never trust a Lannister,” surely the second is always vote for them.

The 69th Annual Golden Globes air Sunday January 15th at 8PM on NBC (CTV in Canada)

The Good: Despite our many many (seriously, emphasis on the many) problems with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) nominees for the 69th ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, there are, as always, a few reasons for us to cheer. Those reasons include some much-deserved recognition for PARKS AND RECREATION’s Amy Poehler, GAME OF THRONES’ Peter Dinklage and HOMELAND’s leading players Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. Also falling under the category of ‘good’ is a shout out to Madeline Stowe’s deliciously-evil, err… we mean unfortunately misunderstood turn as Grayson matriarch Victoria on REVENGE and Johnny Galecki, whose somewhat subdued performance on THE BIG BANG THEORY far too often gets forgotten amidst the heightened hilarity of his supporting cast.

The Bad: Where do we begin? GLEE for Best Comedy/Musical, CALIFORNICATIONS’ David Duchovny, or the unfortunate way in which the HFPA insists on cramming together all the supporting television roles so that BOARDWALK EMPIRE’s Kelly MacDonald ends up in a category against MODERN FAMILY’s Sofia Vergara?! Yes, let’s begin there shall we, because that last point really speaks to the root of our problem with this entire process. Which is to say, it’s not so much that we have an issue with what did get nominated, but rather the haphazard way in which the television categories are treated that leaves us with the distinct impression that the medium we love so dear is being treated like a second-class citizen in contrast to the far flashier film categories. Which brings us to…

The Ugly: How much thought do the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association give to the television categories, really? We only ask because based on yet another year of all too predictable nominees, one can’t help but feel as though that actors aren’t being nominated based on merit but rather an unspoken HFPA checklist that includes the obligatory “next big thing” (See: NEW GIRLS’ Zooey Deschanel), requisite buzz-worthy shows (See: AMERICAN HORROR STORY, GLEE), now standard USA Network shout out (See: Callie Thorne, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS) and colorful collection of former movie stars whose inclusion will ensure even more star power during the award show’s January 15th broadcast (See: ENLIGHTENED’s Laura Dern, THE BORGIAS’ Jeremy Irons and AMERICAN HORROR STORY’s Jessica Lange). How else to explain the almost unconscionable snubs that include but are not limited to the immensely talented ensemble casts of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, PARKS AND RECREATION, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THE GOOD WIFE, BREAKING BAD, SHAMELESS, HAPPY ENDINGS, among others.

THE GOOD: In his second (and most likely final) outing as Golden Globes master of ceremonies, Ricky Gervais deflated Hollywood’s all-too-often air of self-importance with some truly fearless one-liners. No star was safe. Particularly if your name was Charlie Sheen (“Welcome to a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast.”), were one of ladies of SEX AND THE CITY (“I was sure the award for best special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster.”) or two of Hollywood’s biggest names who, for fear of legal reprisal, shall remain nameless (“Also not nominated, I Love You Phillip Morris, with Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay — the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then.”).

Also falling under the category of “good,” aside that is from much deserving wins for THE BIG BANG THEORY’s Jim Parsons and SONS OF ANARCHY star Katey Sagal were a handful of the speeches. Most notably, GLEE star Chris Colfer’s poignant shout out to all the kids that his hit series celebrates (“Who are constantly told “NO” by the people in their environments, by bullies at school that they can’t be who they are or have what they want because of who they are. Well, screw that, kids!”), Jane Lynch’s acknowledgment of the more-often-than-not overlooked reason she is on stage (“Every insane, heinous line that comes out of my mouth was written by him [GLEE writer Ian Brennan] He’s a deranged young man. This is yours, too, although I will be holding onto it.”), a bit of fatherly advice from The Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin (“And I want to thank all the female nominees tonight for helping demonstrate to my young daughter that elite is not a bad word, it’s an aspirational one. Honey, look around, smart girls have more fun, and you’re one of them.”), and a usually demure Natalie Portman who applauded her fiancé (choreographer Benjamin Millepied) appearance in Black Swan (“It’s not true! He totally wants to sleep with me!”)

THE BAD: Bruce Willis and Robert Downey Jr. weren’t the only ones who thought Gervais’ unique brand of humor fell flat. In fact, based on the reaction from numerous members of our own family (one in particular who thought Gervias knocking the HFPA President was “mean” and “not funny”), it’s safe to say that your average run-of-the-mill viewer may not been as “in” on several of Gervais’ jokes, particularly those targeted at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Also not cool, the giant chasm the producers of last night’s ceremony seemed to create when it came to the time allocated for movie versus TV stars. Where as the likes of Al Pacino (YOU DON’T KNOW JACK) and Christian Bale (The Fighter) were allowed to spew endlessly about whatever floated to the tops of their very talented heads, equally deserving television stars such as Katey Sagal (SONS OF ANARCHY) and Steve Buscemi (BOARDWALK EMPRIE) were played off relatively fast. That, and don’t even get us started on GLEE’s win for Best Comedy over MODERN FAMILY. Which brings us to…

THE UGLY: Putting aside Ricky Gervias’ career prospects for a moment, the most unfortunate thing about last night’s kudos fest is that, unlike the Oscars or the Super Bowl, competing networks really don’t see Golden Globes as competition in the ratings department. Which means rather than repeats, we’ve got to clear off THE SIMPSONS, BOB’S BURGERS, FAMILY GUY, CLEVELAND SHOW, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS of our PVR/DVR if we have any hopes of making room for tonight’s jam-packed schedule which include HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, SHAMELESS, EPISODES, BEING HUMAN, SKINS among others.

In anticipation of tonight’s 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards (8PM on NBC, CTV in Canada) theTVaddict.com is proud [or not-so-proud depending on how things turn out] to once again present our GUARANTEED GOLDEN GLOBE WINNERS 2011*

Best Television Series – Drama
BOARDWALK EMPIRE
DEXTER
THE GOOD WIFE
MAD MEN
THE WALKING DEAD

Should Win: THE WALKING DEAD
After back-to-back-to-back wins for MAD MAN, we for one would welcome a little fresh blood. Particularly if it’s of the zombie variety.

Will Win: BOARDWALK EMPIRE
Just in case the talented ensemble and off-the-charts production values weren’t enough of an incentive for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association [HFPA] to single out HBO’s newest series — having Martin Scorsese — last year’s recipient of the HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award as one of the show’s producers should pretty much seal the deal.

Best Television Series – Comedy/Musical
30 ROCK
THE BIG BANG THEORY
THE BIG C
GLEE
MODERN FAMILY
NURSE JACKIE

Should Win: MODERN FAMILY
The most consistently laugh-out-loud comedy of the bunch.

Will Win: GLEE
Even though the show has quietly devolved into a virtual parody of itself, the HFPA is not going to want to miss out on an opportunity to celebrate the splashy hit that has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical
Toni Collette, UNITED STATES OF TARA
Edie Falco, NURSE JACKIE
Tina Fey, 30 ROCK
Laura Linney, THE BIG C
Lea Michele, GLEE

Should Win: Tina Fey
If the measure of an actress up for a best performance in a television series comedy is making us laugh (which, let’s face it, it should be) Tina Fey FTW!

Will Win: Laura Linney
If Kate Winslet’s hilarious guest appearance on Ricky Gervais’ EXTRAS taught us anything, it’s that next to Holocaust survivor, nothing screams award winner like bravely fighting cancer.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical
Alec Baldwin, 30 ROCK
Steve Carell, THE OFFICE
Thomas Jane, HUNG
Matthew Morrison, GLEE
Jim Parsons, THE BIG BANG THEORY

Should Win: Jim Parsons
Also known as the man solely responsible for elevating what could have easily been another half-baked Chuck Lorre sitcom into honest-to-goodness-must-see-TV.

Will Win: Steve Carrell
Considering Alec Baldwin already has five nominations and three wins to his name, we’re going to go out on a limb here by predicting that the HFPA will be the ones to kick off the Steve Carell “Farewell to THE OFFICE Celebration” in 3… 2… 1…

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Julianna Margulies, THE GOOD WIFE
Elizabeth Moss, MAD MEN
Piper Perabo COVERT AFFAIRS
Katey Sagal SONS OF ANARCHY
Kyra Sedgwick, THE CLOSER

Should Win: Katey Sagal
An actress, who if our twitter feed was any indication, gave an absolutely fearless performance in the third season of SONS OF ANARCHY.

Will Win: Kyra Sedgwick
Don’t shoot the messenger.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Steve Buscemi, BOARDWALK EMPIRE
Bryan Cranston, BREAKING BAD
Michael C. Hall, DEXTER
Jon Hamm, MAD MEN
Hugh Laurie, HOUSE

Should Win: Jon Hamm
Any heterosexual man who can reject January Jones in a believable fashion is award-worthy in our books. Or, on a more serious note…

Will Win: Jon Hamm
… Whether he’s helping to keep his struggling agency afloat, or navigating the increasingly rocky waters that is his personal life, Hamm continues to knock it out of the park.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Scott Caan, HAWAII FIVE-0
Chris Colfer, GLEE
Chris Noth, THE GOOD WIFE
Eric Stonestreet, MODERN FAMILY
David Strathairn, TEMPLE GRANDIN

Should Win: Eric Stonestreet
And no, we’re not just saying this in a shameless attempt to get the MODERN FAMILY scene-stealer to follow us on twitter. Okay maybe a little

Will Win: Chris Colfer.
It gets better indeed.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Hope Davis, THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
Jane Lynch, GLEE
Kelly Macdonald, BOARDWALK EMPIRE
Julia Stiles, DEXTER
Sofia Vergara, MODERN FAMILY

Sofia Vergara: MODERN FAMILY
In the hands of virtually any other actress, a beautiful bombshell married to an older man would be a one-note walking cliche that would get tired fast. Luckily Sofia Vergara isn’t any other actress.

Will WIn: Jane Lynch
Despite the fact that we’re pretty confident we would walk away with a Golden Globe had we be given the seemingly never-ending barrage of brilliant one-liners courtesy of GLEE executive producer Ian Brennan, it’s hard to argue with handing out some hardware to Jane Lynch.

Note: Unlike our “above” picks which have been heavily researched, debated and dissected, our picks in the miniseries/TV movie category should be taken with a grain of salt as a result of having failed to see most of the nominees.

Best Miniseries or TV Movie
THE PACIFIC: From Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks comes an uncompromising HBO miniseries with a 150 million dollar price tag. You do the math.

Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie
Al Pacino, YOU DON’T KNOW JACK: Suffice to say, you don’t know jack about award shows if you think anyone but Al Pacino is going to walk away with this ward.

Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie
Claire Danes, TEMPLE GRANDIN: In an addendum to our earlier notion that Holocaust and Cancer survivor are as sure a thing as it gets when it comes to Awards season, we’d also like to add Claire Danes, who is bound to walk away a winner thanks to her portrayal of Temple Grandin, a remarkable woman who has given a very public face to the often misunderstood issue of autism.

*theTVaddict.com does not guarantee his “winning picks.” Do not, I repeat, Do not bet the house, kids or family pet on them!

10:59PM: Whether you were a fan of the tonight’s winners or not (THE HANGOVER, Best Comedy, really?), can we at least all agree that television needs more Ricky Gervais?

10:28PM: Were the Hollywood Foreign Press drunk? Seriously, how else to explain THE HANGOVER beating out 500 DAYS OF SUMMER for a Best Motion Picture Comedy Golden Globe.

10:19PM: Don’t Stop Believin!!! GLEE walks away a Golden Globe for Best TV Series Comedy!!! Says Ryan Murphy, “This is for anyone and anybody who ever got a wedgie in High School!”

10:16PM: James Cameron wins a Best Director Golden Globe for AVATAR.

9:34PM: Hollywood Legend Sophia Loren awards THE WHITE RIBBON a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film… soon to be adapted by Steven Spielberg. Okay not really.

9:24PM: Separated at Birth II: UP IN THE AIR director/writer Jason Reitman (who incidentally just won a writing Golden Globe for UP IN THE AIR) and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’s Ronald D. Moore. Discuss.

9:13PM: Drew Barrymore wins a Best Actress in a Mini-series or Movie for GREY GARDENS. Showtime 3, HBO 3.

9:12PM: Kevin Bacon wins a Best Actor in a Mini-series or Movie for TAKING CHANCES. Showtime 3, HBO 2.

9:00PM: Dear Meryl Streep, the jig is up. Seriously, there’s no need to feign surprise for your much-deserved Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for JULIE & JULIA.

8:56PM: Even though we would like to subtract points for one of the worst speeches in Golden Globe history, HBO finally gets in the game with a win for GREY GARDENS, which collects a Best TV Mini-Series or Motion Picture Golden Globe. Showtime 3, HBO 1.

8:45PM: Ryan Bingham’s The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart) wins the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. While ALIAS/LOST/THE INCREDIBLES genius Michael Giacchino wins the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for UP.

8:43PM: High Definition TV is Cher’s naturally enemy.

8:37PM: First non-Gervais NBC shot of the night goes to Best Actress in a Drama Golden Globe winner Julianna Margulies who thanks CBS for “believing in the 10′o’clock Drama “You go <strike>girl</strike> good wife!

8:33PM: Michael C. Hall finally wins a Golden Globe for DEXTER! Woo-Hoo!!!

8:30PM: Separated at Birth: Larry King and Golden Globe President Philip Burke. Discuss.

8:21PM: Why Paul McCartney is slumming it up at the Golden Globes we’re not quite sure, but since he just presented UP with a much-deserved Golden Globe for a Best Animated Feature we’re just gonna shut up.

8:18PM: Class act John Lithgow wins a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for DEXTER. Claims “I’ve had the most wonderful time creeping out the entire country for the past six months.”

8:17PM: Has a Miss. Golden Globe ever amounted to anything? (Note: previous Ms. Golden Globe’s include Rumor Willis and Lily Costner)

8:11PM: Toni Collette wins a Best Actress in a TV Comedy Golden Globe for her work in UNITED STATES OF TARA. Showtime 1, HBO 0. Not that we’re keeping score or anything.

8:05PM: Nicole Kidman presents Mo’Nique with a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for PRECIOUS. But before she does, she takes a moment to give the obligatory shout-out to Haiti. Asking people to donate… in a dress that if sold, could probably feed an entire Haitian town. We’re just sayin’

8:01PM: For the record, it took the hilarious Ricky Gervais less than four minutes to get in two beautifully crafted shots at NBC. Starting with, “I’m not used to these viewing figures, let’s face it, neither is NBC.” Only to end his opening monologue with, “Let’s get on with it, before NBC replaced me with Jay Leno.”

7:31PM: With T-minus thirty minutes and counting we thought we’d commence the evening with a question: Just how many minutes do you think it will take host Ricky Gervais to make his first joke at NBC’s expense? We give ‘em five minutes! You?

Thanks to a third season that culminated in one of the most exhilarating corporate takeovers in recent memory, voters would be — you guessed it — mad to ignore the Matthew Weiner masterpiece.

Should Win: BIG LOVE
As Bill Henrickson’s problems get even bigger, so to does our love affair with this criminally under appreciated HBO gem.

Nominees: Simon Baker, Michael C. Hall, Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Bill Paxton

Will Win: Hugh Laurie
And not just because the very-special two-hour season premiere that saw the good doctor locked away in an insane asylum had ‘For Your Consideration’ written all over it! Okay, maybe a little.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

Should Win: Julianna Marguilies
Who with her comeback performance on the hit CBS procedural more than lives up to the name, the ‘good’ wife.
