The new ABC Family series JANE BY DESIGN tells the story of a young high school student who gets the chance to work at a fashion design house and live her dreams. In a recent conference call with press, star Erica Dasher shared what it is has been like stepping into Jane Quimby’s fairytale shoes and having all of her dreams come true simultaneously.

This past episode we saw Jane go to Paris. What was that like for you personally?
ERICA: Awesome. It was great. We shot mostly in L.A. We have stages up in Santa Clarita and then we did a few days in New York in order to make our New York shots feel a little more authentic. It was just great. Our producer didn’t want to put me in front of a green screen. They want each episode to feel like a movie. The show really does feel like a romantic comedy in a lot of ways, and I think what makes it special is that it’s on this grand scale. I live in Westchester. I work in SoHo. We travel to Beverly Hills. Eventually we go to Paris. I was really happy we got to go. It was awesome because we ended production there. We did three or four days of shooting in Paris and then production left and I stayed for five days on my own and wandered around the city. It was an incredible way to end my first job.

What’s been your favorite moment filming so far?
ERICA: It’s hard not to say standing under the Eiffel Tower doing a scene. It was the last scene we shot and at 8:00 the Eiffel Tower lights up and starts glittering. It was a pretty incredible moment.

Jane lives the double life between her work and high school. What do you think her biggest issues are with the high school side of her?
ERICA: I think she’s never felt like she fit in, in school. I can relate to that. I never felt like I fit it. And I think there’s a lot of pressure to do that as a teenager. You want to be unique, but you don’t want to be ostracized, and I think sort of straddling to those two worlds and also becoming an adult and still being a kid and dealing with your parents. Jane doesn’t have that as much because she has a brother. She just lives with her older brother. So I think there are just a lot of gray areas in high school and I think that’s what makes it difficult.

Do you think in the end she will maybe end up breaking out of that in the future?
ERICA: I think we’ve already seen a bit of that. As she starts to gain confidence from being recognized for stuff that she’s passionate about in the work world she brings that back to high school, and that’s why Nick Fadden starts to notice her. She suddenly has a sort of different air about her. One of the first things that the show runner said to me that attracted me to the project was that there are so many things she wishes she could tell her younger self now that she’s an adult. Jane gets to take those lessons from the adult world and bring them back to high school with her the next day. I think that’s really cool.

What do you think Jane is drawn to and admires about Billy?
ERICA: She and Billy have been best friends since childhood. There’s a lot of love there. They know how to push each other’s buttons. I think she really likes that Billy marches to his own beat and she’s very much the same way even though she wants to fit in. They have very similar nature.

Do you think it’s possible for girls and boys to be just friends like Billy and Jane?
ERICA: I think so. “When Harry Met Sally” is one of my favorite movies, so that could probably answer it better than I can. The thing about Billy and Jane is there’s so much love in the relationship that you never know what that love could turn into. But I do think it’s possible. I have some good guy friends.

What do you love and enjoy about working with Nick and Matthew and Rowly?
ERICA: They’re all so great and I’ve become such wonderful friends with them. Nick is so much like his character Billy on the show. He really treats women like they’re princesses. He’s such a wonderful friend. When I was broken on the pilot he would carry me around. We would have very long days sometimes where we were shooting 14-hour days. I code red for chocolate around 3 p.m. every day and he’d bring me a piece of chocolate. So he’s great. He takes very good care of all of us. Matt, who plays Nick, is actually very similar. We just got very lucky. We have very nice, well-raised boys. Matt is from the South and he’s very polite. He’s great. And then Rowly, he’s a little bit older. He’s so charismatic and he’s really comfortable on set. It’s fun to watch him work. I think he’s really talented. And in real life he’s a lot like his character. He speaks Japanese and French, and obviously he’s British. He’s very much like a sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of guy.

Last week we saw Billy and Jeremy were both bending over backwards to help Jane find the Lookbook. How does Jane get these guys to do everything for her, like drop everything to help her out?
ERICA: I don’t know! I need to figure that out too. I think she’s making such a genuine effort. You want to help her out. It’s a magical quality that Jane has. It’s one I’m very jealous of.

On the show a lot of your scenes with Andie MacDowell are either on the phone or on a video screen. How is it different doing those scenes versus when you get to actually work face-to-face?
ERICA: The great thing is Andie is always on set. At first they set it up like that because she lives in North Carolina, but after the first episode she came and got a place out in L.A. while we were shooting so that she could be on set. She does all her off camera dialogue. Even if I have to look at her in the office somewhere and she has nothing to do with the scene and I’m just supposed to be watching her walk somewhere, she’ll do it. She’s incredible.

Could you tell us any behind the scenes moment that has stood out to you or that our fans could appreciate or hear about?
ERICA: A behind the scenes moment, I will share one. Andie and I went to Fashion Week in the middle of production over the weekend for two days and I was—it’s a really overwhelming experience. I had never done it before and I continued to be surprised by how generous everyone has been to me and how well they take care of me. Andie—everybody’s there from backstage, L’Oreal executives. She’s been the face of L’Oreal for 25 years. She introduced me to everybody and everyone wanted to take pictures with her and she pulled me into every photo and into every interview. It was a really lovely thing. She’s a great role model. And also there was a lot of dancing on set. Like they would call “Cut,” and people would put—LMFAO, for some reason, became this sort of set band. They’d play it on their phones. There was a lot of dancing in between takes.

Was there instant chemistry when you began working with the cast?
ERICA: Yes, actually I was cast first and our creator, show runner, and network had me come in and read with all of the other characters. So they really wanted that chemistry to exist with Billy and me, and with my brother and me. So I think that was a really smart thing that they did to go through that process and make sure that we connected from the very beginning.

You guys seem like such a fun cast. What do you guys like to do when you’re not filming on set?
ERICA: We all got together to watch the show, the pilot, but we’ll go out to eat. We go to the movies. We do karaoke. India, on the show, kills at karaoke. She’s very good. But yes, I’ve become friends with everyone in the cast. It’s been a really special, positive experience. We’re very lucky.

There’s a lot to admire about Jane in both her worlds. What strikes you as her strongest quality?
ERICA: I think she’s a really genuine person. I don’t think that she has any airs about—obviously she’s lying about her age in order work in the fashion industry, but I think she’s really vulnerable. She makes a genuine effort to do the right thing and to help out and is willing to take on any challenges. I think that’s where her likeability lies and that she is not an inauthentic person at all.

How you are similar and different to your character of Jane?
ERICA: I think Jane and I are in a similar place in our lives because she’s getting to live her dream in the fashion world and I’m really getting to do that in the acting world. It’s scary and amazing and exciting, and so I think that passion we really share. She’s much better dressed.

In the show we see Jane franticly switching between her school and her work like. Do you go and switch back and forth between those two different scenes or do you film all of your work scenes one day and all of your school scenes another day?
ERICA: Usually we’ll have days where it’s half the week we’ll be on one stage, which has the house and the school, and the other stage has Donovan Decker, which is this grand, beautiful set. But no, there are days too where we’re literally running back and forth across stages, the whole cast is. So it’s fun. It’s a bit of a character setting.

The show is such a success. How are you finding your newfound fame?
ERICA: Good. I mean I feel like I can still walk down the street so it’s nice. I’m getting a little taste of it. It’s really felt very encouraging and good seeing the overwhelming support on Twitter and Facebook, but I still feel a little removed from it. It’s a surreal experience.

Is it true that you broke your ankle when you were auditioning for Jane?
ERICA: That is very true. I had gone through the first part of the process, the pre-read and the call back and right before the test I was at a café, writing, working on my own stuff. I hadn’t heard anything so I figured it wasn’t happening and I got a call from my manager that I was testing for the show. I didn’t even have the part yet. I had never tested for a show before so I got very excited and I wanted to step out of the café to be nice to the other patrons, since I was being loud and obnoxious. As I walked outside there was a step into the parking lot and I fell over. I was still on the phone with my manager and I was like, “Oh my gosh, I’m so excited. Oh gosh, my ankle really hurts.” It started swelling and I went to the doctor and he had them put me in this big boot to make sure that I could walk around during the test the next day. They still cast me, fortunately, but it was definitely broken and the first episode was a challenge.

What is your advice to fans that are wanting to fashionable but are on a budget?
ERICA: I love vintage shopping. I actually don’t spend a lot of money on clothes at all. I live right around the corner from a little vintage shop and I do a lot of rummaging around, those kinds of places. I think the quality of the craftsmanship in vintage clothes is hard to come by unless you’re able to buy higher-end labels nowadays, and I think you can find a lot of higher end labels that are more affordable in a vintage shop. But in college too we would go to Goodwill to get costumes for theme parties or whatever. I think if forces you to be more creative. If a dress doesn’t quite fit you find a belt that works. But I love vintage and resale stuff.

JANE BY DESIGN is all about fashion, and as a young woman you probably keep up with the latest fashion trends, but did you have to do any special research into the business side of the fashion industry to credibly portray your character Jane?
ERICA: I did. I had been an assistant at different points so I had done a little of pre-research, but yes. Our costume designer, Olivia Miles-Payne, is a genius and she’s exposed me to a lot of young designers. I think the thing about fashion is the industry moves so quickly. A lot of it lives online as well so it’s easy to keep up with it, but you have to sort of stay educated in order to do that. I spend a lot of time reading blogs and stuff online and listening to Andie, because Andie grew up in the fashion industry.

Being on this show, has it inspired you to maybe to some more work in the fashion industry in the future?
ERICA: I really like fashion. The show certainly has an effect on my personal style, which is still evolving. Yes, fashion is a form of a creative outlet and a form of self-expression. I can see myself staying involved in a way. I’m going to Fashion Week next week in New York. It’s just another way for me to learn about that whole world. I’m really excited.

If you could have anyone guest star on JANE BY DESIGN who would it be and what role would you want them to play?
ERICA: Oh my gosh. We had some great cameos this year. We had Betsey Johnson and Patricia Field and Nanette Lepore and the editor-in-chief of W and Teen Vogue and Lucky Magazine. So it’s like we’re already very spoiled. It would be really fun to have Lagerfeld on the show because I think it would add a very fun energy on the set. But I think selfishly, I want Sarah Burton to come on the show, who is the designer for Alexander McQueen, because she’s my favorite and I always want her to design a dress for me.

Do they ever incorporate some of your own style to some of Jane’s?
ERICA: I think some of my own style lives in Jane even more than it does on the red carpet right now. ABC Family has these incredible in-house stylists that will dress me for the red carpet. Right now on the red carpet, it’s about taking risks and finding out what I like and what looks good on me in photographs. Sometimes I really like it and sometimes I feel like it’s a miss, but I’m learning. I’m learning how to do that. With Jane, I say this all the time, but Olivia Miles-Payne, who’s our costume designer, is a genius, and I think part of her genius lies in that she knows there is magic in collaborations. So she really works with what looks good with our body types and what colors look good and what we’re naturally attracted to while still building distinct personalities for each of the characters. But Jane has these sort of like tutu-y things, these tiered skirts. That’s sort of how I pictured her and it’s what I wore to all of my auditions. That became incorporated very quickly into the show. I felt like it was really fun and feminine and flirty, and I think that’s a large part of Jane’s style.

How has the fan response been? Have you come across people that don’t know fashion but are drawn in and what do you think makes this show appealing to audiences?
ERICA: I didn’t know that much about fashion going into it, but when I first read the script I fell in love with it. I fell in love with Jane. I think she’s a very relatable character. Again, I think she’s genuine and vulnerable and passionate and makes a lot of mistakes, but her heart is always in the right place. I was drawn to the relationship that she has with Billy. I think the male/female best friendship is a unique one. I like that she lives with her brother. I think the relationships are what makes the show appealing.

How would you say this experience is different from filming like a web series like you did prior?
ERICA: It’s a lot bigger and the hours are a lot more intense. I remember when I was first cast I was so excited, and then a couple of days later I was like, “Oh my gosh, there’s going to be huge stages and hundreds of people and there are going to be cranes.” It’s surprising how intimate it still feels even though there are a hundred people watching you do things, but you’re in the moment and you’re acting. But yes, I don’t think anything could have prepared me. Plus we had very long days. We did like 12 or 14-hour days and we were doing 11 pages. So it was a really intense process. I completely cut out my social life and everything else and often would stay in a hotel right near the studio so that I could even cut down my drive time. But it was like all Jane all week and then over the weekend I would work with my acting coach on the scripts and start all over again. It takes an incredible amount of focus.

Has there been anything that’s been difficult for you to do so far?
ERICA: Honestly, I’m so supported by the cast. Really it’s such a fun set and I think that has a lot to do with our show runner, our Executive Producers April Blair and Gavin Polone. They’re really even keeled people and they’re both really passionate about the project. Everyone’s prepared and on time and memorized. Everyone really cares about the material. I think when you have people at the top that are cool, good people it trickles down. But I think the hardest thing was, again, the hours. And for the writer too for our show, she was doing the same thing. She’d stay in a hotel near the studio. She was doing rewrites late at night and we were not doing a lot of sleeping. So I think that was it, but it’s fine. It’s like we’re making a TV Show. We couldn’t be happier.

What’s the biggest thing that has changed about your life since you got the show and it’s been airing?
ERICA: Not a lot, just yet. The publicity side of the job is a big change. I do a lot of events and talking to you lovely people. That’s been the biggest change. It’s just like, you know, you getting photographed and going out and realizing that like where I am online, on Twitter, people are looking at it and reading it. So I just have to be a little bit more conscious, at this point, about what I’m putting out into the world.

What’s it like for you, seeing yourself on posters and being a role model? Is that something that you wanted?
ERICA: Seeing myself on posters is totally weird. My parents were so cute. They came into town over Christmas and we drove around to literally every single billboard in the city and took pictures. So it’s just surreal and very funny. It’s sort of an out of body experience. As far as a role model goes, I look at it as a great privilege. My sister is 11 years old and it’s really cool for me to be on a show that she can watch. I sort of have a microphone in my hand to talk about things that I think are important. I look at is a privilege.

Is there anything in upcoming episodes that you would like for the fans to look for, that you would like them specifically to see?
ERICA: Well next week, I think, is a really, really fun episode because India and Jeremy come to the high school. I won’t say why, but they come to the high school. The worlds are colliding big time, and I think it’s a really fun episode. It’s a really heavy episode for India. I think she’s so strong and so beautiful, but she’s so funny. I think it’s a really fun episode. And then in episode eight there’s some drama, which I think is cool. You saw a bit of that in four, but I think the characters really get to grow in episode eight. And then in nine and ten I think we kill it. I think nine is really strong and funny, and then ten, I think people will be very happy and excited for the end of the season.

In the ABC Family mystery series THE LYING GAME, Randy Wayne has the distinct pleasure of portraying Justin, the heartthrob who stole Laurel’s heart while plotting revenge against her father. It’s a juicy role and taking a few minutes to chat with press in a recent conference call, Randy shared where he thinks the Justin-Laurel relationship is headed and how fans react to him now that Justin’s darker side has been revealed.

When you first learned that you had landed the role in THE LYING GAME, did you have that moment of intimidation because of the success of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, which was also inspired by the books of Sara Shepard?
RANDY: I was not too intimidated by the success of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. I thought it would only be helpful. And I knew that I wasn’t the lead of the show, so that pressure was not on my back, on my shoulders. But I had worked with Alexandra [Chando] in the past and I knew that she was a very talented actress, so I knew that she could handle the pressure and I would just go along with it.

Have you read any of THE LYING GAME books? And if so, who do you think is behind THE LYING GAME?
RANDY: I haven’t read the books. But I was also told it wasn’t really that important to read the books because it’s so different from the show.

Now that everything is out in the open about Justin’s real motive for tracking down Ted, does that open a door for Justin and Laurel to pick up their romance again?
RANDY: Yes, it definitely does. I think that Laurel gets a sense that Justin is actually 100% being honest with her. And not only does she get a sense, but she really wanted to believe him and she wants to trust him, so it’s a big moment for their relationship. I guess the big question now is, I don’t think Ted’s going to accept them being together now after what his motives are. You don’t want a kid around that wanted to come and get revenge on you, dating your daughter, even though it’s out in the open now. So I think that’s the big controversy now is how is he going to deal with the kid dating his daughter that wanted to get revenge on him.

What’s next for Justin? Is he going to continue to dig into Ted’s past, or is Justin ready to let the past stay in the past?
RANDY: Love conquers all, and in this situation I think he just wants to forget about it and just focus all of his attention on Laurel. As far as I know, Justin just wants to focus on her to make it work.

Now that Justin and Laurel are kind of back together, Allie actually revealed in a different interview that things are going to be rocky between the two of them for a while. Where do you see their relationship headed for the rest of the season?
RANDY: Well, there are several ways to go, things with their relationship now. Ted obviously is not going to want them to date and they want to date, so they have to start hiding their relationship. And that’s going to be a whole new thing, where Justin doesn’t want to do that anymore. He wants to be honest, but now he has to still hide a relationship and still, in a way, lie about it. And that means that Laurel’s being brought into the lies, which she hasn’t really been involved in yet. And also she’s in the band, and so being in the band causes a big distraction from Justin and I’m sure Justin will start getting a little jealous of the attention that the band’s getting over him.

Trust is a big issue for every character on this show. Who do you feel has the most to lose for the rest of the season?
RANDY: I guess it’s really a toss-up between Justin and Emma, because if Justin doesn’t have Laurel he doesn’t have anything. He moved to Arizona for a certain reason and then that reason’s over, and now he’s only there for one more and that’s Laurel, so if he doesn’t have her I don’t see what his reasoning would be to be there anymore. Then obviously Emma, because without Ethan or without a family she has nothing to go back to, just like Justin, so they’d both be on their own.

It seems like almost anything could happen on this show, so if it were up to you what would you like to see happen to Justin in the next few months?
RANDY: That’s a good question. And I hate to answer it this way, but if you want me to be honest I will, I think that Justin’s always played the nice guy, whether his intentions were not, so he’s always come off as a nice guy except for maybe a couple of scenes. And actually the scenes where he was a bad guy I enjoyed doing so I don’t know, I wouldn’t mind playing a bad guy on the show, I wouldn’t mind Justin, if they did break up, Laurel and Justin, then he’s in this town and he’s going to cause some controversy, and I think I’d like to see that happen.

What is it like being surrounded by so many beautiful and talented women at work every day?
RANDY: Well, it’s amazing. It’s not tough. The thing about the girls on the show is that yes, they’re all really beautiful, but they’re also really cool, so there’s no egos on set. And it just makes it so easy. You know that they’re beautiful, but it’s not intimidating at all and it’s just fun. It’s like living the high life.

What is Alexandra Chando like to work with on and off set?
RANDY: She’s brilliant to work with because she takes her work very seriously. She’s not the kind that actually comes to set and goofs around when she does a scene. She has no problem piping up and asking the writer and director and the producer and saying how can we make this work. She’s very, very professional and very talented, of course. Then off set once she’s separated from the two she’s just a fun young girl and just loves life. She’s always high on life. It’s great.

Would you like to work more with Helen Slater more?
RANDY: I would love to work with Helen a lot more. She’s a very, very talented actress and she comes from such a genuine heartfelt place when she acts that it would be interesting to see, let’s say it didn’t work out between Justin and Laurel, there’s already friction between Ted and Kristin, so if Justin went back to his original plan, Kristin’s the first place to start. I would love it. I would love to work with her. I’d love to make her character question her relationship a lot more, and to be the instigator would be fantastic.

How do the fans react to you when they see you? When they run into you on the street do they come up and start talking to you and treat you like you’re Justin, or are they finding it easy to separate Randy from Justin?
RANDY: That’s a really good question. It’s so funny, because on Twitter people would be like, “I love Justin, or IamRandyWayne,” [@IamRandyWayne is Randy's Twitter handle] yada yada, they’d go on about that, but then when the episodes came up where he was being rude to Laurel and making her cry, people turned and they were like, “I hate IAmRandyWayne. I want to slap you …, why are you so mean,” just not separating the character from the actor. People I don’t think would come up to you in general because of your character, but in person it’s nice and respectful and there’s separation, there’s a curiosity about what’s going to happen next, but online and in the Twitter world there definitely is not much separation sometimes.

Is it a little concerning to you? When you go out in public are you a little, “oh, I wonder if I should really go out incognito”?
RANDY: No, I’m not worried about that. I actually appreciate when people get frustrated with the character because that’s the point. If they’re not frustrated then I’m not doing my job. The beauty of acting is making people like you and then dislike you and then like you again, because you can write something a certain way, but if you don’t bring that to the character then it’s not going to work. To see people change their mind about you and your character, it’s entertaining and I love to hear it. I actually like when people approach me in public. I’m not so famous where it’s annoying. So it’s actually kind of fun.

Is your accent something you have to be conscious about all the time to get the Southern accent out of your character?
RANDY: I’ve actually played a lot of Southern roles and it makes it really easy for me. But when I moved to L.A. I realized that I had an accent, I didn’t know that before, and yes, I had to focus on basically just enunciating and articulating instead of mumbling so much. But I’ve been home for about three weeks now, so the accent is definitely creeping back up on me. When I go back to L.A. in a week … I’m going to have to work on it again.

It’s only January and you already have this great guest appearance on HOT IN CLEVELAND. What other projects have you been working on? Where else are we going to see you in 2012?
RANDY: Actually, it’s surreal a little bit, so Monday was THE LYING GAME, Wednesday was HOT IN CLEVELAND, and I also did a movie that was on Syfy last night, and then I did movie called “To Save a Life,” it’s a teen drama, and it premieres Sunday on the GMC channel. Also coming up I have a movie called “Honey 2” by Universal. It’s the dance sequel to the original “Honey” with Jessica Alba. That comes out on DVD February 26th, I think, 28th, or something like that. So “Honey 2” and then I also have a film that’s coming out called “HARDflip.” It’s a skateboarding family drama.
To more of Randy and to find out where the romance between Justin and Laurel goes, tune in for THE LYING GAME on Mondays at 9PM on ABC Family.

While most people reading this would give an arm and a leg to attend the Television Critics Association Press Tour — a bi-annual event that affords those who cover the industry the unique opportunity to hobnob with the actors, writers and executives who help create it — the unfortunate fact of the matter is that a never-ending parade of panels and parties is more often than not, not nearly as much fun as it sounds. That said, every once in a while a little gem of a show comes along that reminds us as to why we’re so lucky to be covering this business we affectionally refer to as show. This past TCA, that show was ABC Family’s SWITCHED AT BIRTH, a truly compelling series that tells the story of what happens when two teen girls (one deaf, one hearing) discover that they were, as the title suggests, switched at birth. But just what got us so enamored with a series that we immediately devoured Volume One on DVD on the flight home from TCA? Find out for yourself, after the jump.

The kleenex-required casting process.
While finding the prefect mixture of talent is never an easy thing when it comes to any television series, what made successfully casting SWITCHED AT BIRTH particularly challenging was that the Producers were intent on finding a leading lady fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). A challenge which according to Creator/Executive Producer Lizzy Weiss contributed to a roller-coaster ride of emotion. “It was an open casting call where Paul [Co-Executive Producer Paul Stupin] and I just had a really emotional day,” explained Weiss recounting the process that led to discovering their Daphne. “People came in, drove in for hours, said thank you so much for writing this, for having a character who is so well?rounded, who happens to be deaf, who is a full, real person who’s not just like a witness to a murder on another show. And they were just so excited that this could have the chance to go on TV.”

Katie LeClerc is a force to be reckoned with.
While odds are fairly certain that you’ve already discovered that actress Katie LeClerc isn’t technically deaf, what you might not know is that she suffers from Meniere’s disease. In other words, unlike most actors who simply have to show up to the set with their lines fully memorized, LeClerc has to do so while struggling with ringing in her ear, fluctuating hearing loss, and the occasional bout of vertigo to boot. “When I read the script, I literally went, ‘They’re never going to find this girl. This beautiful, talented actress who’s deaf or hard of hearing and fluent in American Sign Language’,” admitted Vanessa Marano who plays LeClerc’s SWITCHED AT BIRTH counterpart Bay Kennish. “I’m so thankful that someone like Katie did get cast, because so much is going into this part.” Added Weiss, “Katie pops off the screen, she’s a wonderful actress, she’s beautiful and that she looks like [her on screen biological mother] Lea Thompson is a huge bonus.”

Emmet FTW!
As much as our recent obsession with SWITCHED AT BIRTH can be credited to the unique premise that shines the spotlight on a deaf culture we know so little about, a close second is the increasingly addictive love triangle involving Daphne, Bay and Emmett. And while we don’t pretend to know which team exactly will win out in the end (Editor’s Note: Go Team Bay!), we do know that a big part of the credit goes to relative newcomer Sean Berdy for crafting a character in Emmett so unlike anything we’ve ever seen on television before. Said Berdy, on the surprising success of his small screen alter ego, “Honestly, I can admit that I never expected that that character would grow in that way, become popular in that sense. I thought I’d be certainly a supporting role, background, you know, traditional deaf guy in an all?hearing cast. But the writers have included me. American Sign Language is being featured more than ever before, and I’m truly blessed and fortunate.”

Move Over Sharpay Evans.
Since we continue to hold a somewhat embarrassing soft spot for any and all actors involved in Disney’s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL series, we feel it our duty to point out how pleased we are that the artist formerly known as Ryan Evans is finally getting his much-deserved moment in the spotlight. What’s more, he’s making the most of it. To the point that the entire cast pretty much conceded that Lucas Grabeel — who plays Bay’s slightly older and far less responsible brother Toby — has picked up ASL faster than anyone else in the cast. Said Gabreel, “Katie actually taught me — when we first started, I went to her, and she taught me five signs every day — because I really fell in love with the language immediately and just wanted to learn as much as I could. My girlfriend and I use it at parties to sign to each other like, “You ready to go’?”

The show is just the beginning.
Contrary to what the like of JERSEY SHORE, any show involving a Kardashian and the seemingly never-ending collection of truly trashy reality shows might have you believe, television still remains an incredibly powerful medium. Case in point, the response Constance Marie — who plays Bay’s biological mother Regina — has gotten to the show via social media. “I have people that are letting me know because of the show, they were so inspired that they’re petitioning their high schools to have sign language be one of the second languages that they can learn. They’re trying to find teachers. They’re spreading the word,” said Marie. “It will make me emotional and I will try not to cry. But I have had deaf people on Twitter let me know that they’re so inspired, that their ?? that as a hearing parent, to have a hearing parent learn sign language for their child means so much and they are inspired. And I’ve had mothers say because of that, I’m going to work harder to learn the language of my child. And it’s bridging a gap, and I think that is just a wonderfully beautiful thing.”

In the young adult series THE LYING GAME, Allie Gonino plays Laurel Mercer, the younger sister of Sutton Mercer – the girl who sets ‘The Lying Game’ in motion when she swaps places with her twin Emma, so that she can investigate their birth mother and the events that led to their adoption 16 years before. As Laurel, Allie not only gets to stretch her acting wings, but she also is able to express her passion for music. While Laurel is known for playing the violin, she was recently given the chance to shine in the spotlight in the ‘Pleased To Meet Me’ episode when asked to sing on stage at a benefit party. In a recent press call, Allie shared what she enjoys about playing Laurel and what’s next on the horizon of THE LYING GAME.

What do you continue to enjoy the most about playing the character of Laurel?
ALLIE: I think the thing I enjoy the most about playing Laurel is that with every episode, as her storyline develops, she’s learning new things about life [and] I’m learning new things about life with her and new things about myself too. I feel like I have a chance to grow myself by playing Laurel.

What do you feel it is about a show like THE LYING GAME that resonates well with viewers?
ALLIE: I think there are so many elements. I think the romantic love triangle between Sutton and Ethan, you know, is probably stirring up some excitement. And obviously, the fact that like we have no idea whether Alec is a creep or if he’s a good guy. And we have really cute clothes which I’m going to say is probably a big reason why young girls watch it or even, you know, women. There’s so many elements, though, and just like the mystery aspect. I think there’s so much going on in every episode and I think that’s what keeps the viewers coming back for more.

Now that Sutton is back in town how will that sort of change things in the Mercer house?
ALLIE: Well, I know in the next episode they’re still wanting to keep the twins anonymity. Like, they don’t want anyone to know that the twins are twins and out and about because there’s a killer on the loose and they don’t know if that’s provoking the killer to go out and find them. So the next episode is basically just both of them taking turns playing Sutton.

What has been the most challenging episode that you had to do so far?
ALLIE: That’s a good question. I guess probably the episode that was just aired. That’s the first time that I’ve ever had to really break down in a scene and cry. So, I’d have to say that one. It was just a very emotional episode for Laurel. She never really shows that side of herself. She’s usually very strong and happy and zealous. So I’d have to say that one. I just plugged in my iPod and put on a sad song and thought about something really awful and then the tears came.

Is there going to be a repair in the relationship between Laurel and Justin?
ALLIE: Yes. There’s definitely some trust issues that will be coming up in the next couple of episodes you’ll be able to see.

What makes your character so appealing to the fans? And how do you identify with your character; similarities and differences?
ALLIE: I think what’s most appealing about Laurel is that she is such a real character. I think young girls can identify a lot with her. She’s just a regular girl trying to get through life and still remain true to herself, while also trying to be a good sister to a nightmare of a sister. I think there’s a vulnerability to Laurel that I felt when I was 16. So I think she’s just really relatable. I guess our sense of humor is sort of similar. So I would say it’s a similarity. But the difference between us is, I guess, probably just our lifestyle. Laurel goes to high school and I’ve been doing music and acting for my whole life. That’s probably the biggest difference.

Do you think maybe in the future Laurel will affect Sutton as realizing she’s kind of snotty? Or do you think that maybe with all the stuff going on with Justin, Laurel might do some of ‘The Lying Games’ herself?
ALLIE: I know that the real Sutton and Laurel have a conversation. And Laurel says something to the effect of like, you’ve been different lately. And I think Sutton is taken aback by it because she’s just now figuring out what a cool person Emma is and, of course, that only like sparks more jealousy. I’m not really sure if Laurel is going to be in on ‘The Lying Game.’ I’m sure she probably will at some point. Everyone on the show is playing ‘The Lying Game.’ [laughs] So I don’t know about that one though.

Do they spend a lot of time with you guys in the fitting rooms with your wardrobe?
ALLIE: Yes. We do have a great stylist, Mimi Kaupe. She, basically, just pulls in a big rack of really cute things. We get to try them on, play dress up for like an hour and say what we like best. And then, it just all kind of comes together. We don’t have like a huge budget for our clothes. So I think it’s really, really amazing that we’ve been able to stylize the show so well.

In which direction would you like to see your character go in? What would you like to see your character do more of?
ALLIE: Well, I think she’s been very enthralled with the boyfriend sort of situation lately. And in the next episode you’ll see she gets to perform on stage for the first time. And so, I’m really glad that she’s kind of getting back into being Laurel, you know, not Laurel plus boyfriends. And she’s getting a little bit of her sass back and getting to express herself through music. So, I’m hoping in the future that they’ll show that it’s possible to balance both having a boyfriend and pursuing your own thing. I think that would be really cool for the viewers.

Is there anything else you can tell us about future episodes? Any tidbits you can spill about?
ALLIE: Yes, without giving too much away. Laurel finds out what the big secret between Justin and Ted is. So it has to do with the bracelet and it’s going to rock her world. So definitely look out for that. It’s a pretty jarring episode.

So, Laurel is going to find out what Justin’s hiding. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? Does that mean they’re going to repair their relationship after she knows the truth?
ALLIE: I can’t exactly say. I have to be very careful. But it’s definitely going to put a huge a dent in the relationship. You know, they just broke up. So now the truth is coming out and Laurel is going to have to decide whether to trust him again and try to repair the relationship or dump him.

Are there any plans in the work to come back and perform again with your band?
ALLIE: Yes. We are performing in episode, I think, it’s 116. So, like three episodes after this Monday we’ll be performing again.

Are you ever surprised when you get your next script, who else is holding a secret and who else is involved in this whole game?
ALLIE: Definitely. I’m just as surprised as the viewers are with each new episode. We don’t really ever know what’s going to happen until we get the script. We’ll hear like rumors about what’s going to happen and then they’ll change their minds and write something totally different. So yes, it is the mystery sort of surprise element to the show is what makes it so successful.

Do you think that these characters are a pretty accurate depiction of 15, 16, 17 year olds today?
ALLIE: I hope not! You know, television we exaggerate everything. But that’s why we do it is to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And entertainment is there for us to just let go and forget about everything else and get involved in lots of drama without actually doing it in real life, you know. I think that’s the good thing about it.

I have one more question in regards to the wardrobe. You guys wear some pretty high heels. Is that tough on you guys on your long shoot days?
ALLIE: Well, I’ve been wearing high heels for awhile. I’m a dancer. So it’s not too bad unless the shoes themselves are really uncomfortable and then it’s a pain. But, you know, I like wearing heels. They make me feel sexy.

When you first heard about the role of Laurel, what was it that made you want to play her?
ALLIE: I think it was just that I saw so much of myself in her. And I probably just felt some deep desire to live that stage in my life again and probably relearn some lessons that I didn’t necessarily remember. And learn new things about myself. And I just love her wit. She’s so funny and energetic. That’s just like the type of character I want to play. And it is my first, like, big role. So I wanted to pick something that would really allow me to learn acting and being in front of the camera and all that kind of stuff.

Do you have a behind the scene moment or memory or something that you could share with fans that they wouldn’t know about from filming or just some little tidbit?
ALLIE: Well, I guess, we rarely get to do scenes where it’s all of the cast in one scene. But the scene where we had the dinner party when the parents went out of town. We were joking and it’s just a fun set. Like, we really do get along and all the actors are really intelligent people and want to do good work and are here to tell a story. I think the fans would like to know that all these characters that they’re seeing are not as evil as they appear to be on television. They’re really–they’re really good people.

What exactly would you like see happen with Laurel’s character in relationship to Justin?
ALLIE: They don’t even know where they’re going with that storyline. But I think if she does decide to stay with Justin it needs to be like full-fledged trust. Relationships are difficult. If you are going to choose to spend at your youth with someone, like, that’s such a big decision to spend your high school years with someone. So, I think I just want her to remain true to who she is and true to her passions. And I want her to be ambitious and go off and do her own Laurel thing. And be able to have a boyfriend. But I don’t want it to be all about him.

You recently sang one of the Dixie Chick’s songs on the show. What can you share about that?
ALLIE: I played “Top of the World” which was written by Patty Griffin, but sung by the Dixie Chicks. They’re the reason I got into music in the very first place when I was like four years old. So to be able to play one of their songs on a TV show is, like, really weird but really awesome. And I feel really honored to be able to do that. It’s like, it’s my own little homage to them. So I was excited.

What was your first love; acting or performing as a musician?
ALLIE: I would say music. I think it has always been something that I’ve just been in love with. I think it’s universal for everyone. You know, it’s been around since forever. But I was, like, probably three years old when I watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time and that really, I think, inspired me to be an actress. And I would come home from day care every single day and dress up like Dorothy, watch the movie and act it out. So I was, like, definitely an actress from a very young age. But I don’t think I knew it until I actually started booking. But I would have to say music is where my heart will always be.

Besides the violin what other instruments do you play?
ALLIE: I play a little bit of Mandolin. And I can play a little piano but not very well. Just a little by ear.

Have the fans recognized you more since THE LYING GAME and is there any fan experience that stands out in your mind?
ALLIE: I definitely have been recognized a bit more since the show came on. The one I was most surprised to find out about that she even watches the show. My band and I when we were in L.A. we play music for this private children’s hospital, and I walked in to this one girl, Angela, who we actually wrote a song about. So we walked into her room and she was just chilling and watching ABC Family and our guide was like, “Angela, this is Allie.” And she was like, “Were you on THE LYING GAME?” I was like, “Yes, you watch that show?” She was like, “Yes.” And she was like really star struck but not like freaking out. But just like happy that we were there to play music for her. So that was like a really special moment for me that people I wouldn’t have even imagine who’d get to watch the show gets to watch it. So that made me really happy.

Could you tell us if you had a favorite episode from either what we’ve seen or the shows that you’ve shot that we haven’t seen yet? If there’s one episode that stands out to you?
ALLIE: Honestly, the episode you’re going to see this week is my favorite because I get to play the Dixie Chicks song and I get to perform with my real life band. It’s like a dream come true and I’m excited for myself. But I’m also excited for the fans to see it because I think the music element is interesting and I don’t think any other show is really doing it. So to have all this drama with like a backdrop of music is fun. I’m excited for this one.

Being on THE LYING GAME and having your band, you’re very busy, very full of life, how do you balance it all?
ALLIE: I don’t know. I really just try to take it as it comes and not try to stress out too much which is, honestly, the hardest thing in the world to do is not let it overwhelm me. But we’ve been in the studio and in film. So you just got to take it as it comes and then treat yourself every once in awhile with, a dessert or a drink or something which I don’t suggest to people under the age of 21.

So we know now that in THE LYING GAME signature was the white and black bow surprise and we’ve already seen one. Will there be anymore of those coming up?
ALLIE: We haven’t seen anymore as of yet. But we’re about to do a table read of the next episode so maybe on that one. But that’s all we’ve seen of the black and white bow.

In terms of the mystery of the lying game, is there a person you think you could expand to also target? Like Ethan or will they exclusively stick to just going after Emma?
ALLIE: I know Ethan gets in trouble for something but it doesn’t really have to do with the twins. The episode we just shot is going to, like, shock people. But that’s all I can say right now.

To see what other mysteries unravel and how Laurel fits into THE LYING GAME, be sure to tune in on Monday nights at 9PM on ABC Family Channel.

Once upon a time there was a young teenage girl who wanted nothing more than to be a world famous pop singer – just one tiny problem, she could not sing. Not daunted by this small hiccup, Beverly Van Ravensway (Megan Park) came up with a creative solution: she would lip-sing her way to stardom. Alas, just like in any classic Cyrano de Bergerac story, this scheme is almost certain to backfire spectacularly. In a recent press conference call, the delightful Megan Park candidly shared some of her experiences in working in the fun film A CINDERELLA STORY: ONCE UPON A SONG as the musically-challenged Beverly Van Ravensway.

What similarities and differences did you find between this CINDERELLA story and the original?
MEGAN: The original was more sticking with the traditional Cinderella-esque fairytale, and this one was sort of like a modern day take on it, which I thought was kind of unique and creative. Obviously there’s only one wicked stepsister and it wasn’t keeping with the fairytale. It was sort of a more relatable story to modern day teens today, which I thought was really cool. And then, making it about the music, which is another cool aspect, and the music is so great and it’s so pop-y and refreshing. It was just sort of a really refreshing take on the whole story.

Did you draw from the stepsisters in the original Cinderella movie or is there another villain that you drew inspiration from?
MEGAN: I talked to the director about whether I should draw upon the original stepsister and how similar they wanted it to be to the original, and he really wanted me to like just take a fresh take on it. And I guess I could say that I probably drew on past people that I’ve met, personal experiences with, people that in real life, because I really wanted Bev to be as realistic as possible. And also in the original the wicked stepsisters are just purely, purely wicked, and Bev is not. She really does have a heart and she’s insecure and she doesn’t have a great relationship with her mother and so many different things. I wanted to add a lot of steps to her and make her not so completely one note. She’s not purely, purely evil so I wanted that to show.

What made you decide to play this vastly different role from Grace on SECRET LIFE?
MEGAN: I was in New Orleans filming this movie called “So Undercover” with Miley Cyrus and it was a character that’s really sweet and really dumb and a different sort of take on a character more in the vein of Grace. And that’s a character that I tend to play a lot because I really connect with those characters and I really like playing them. Bev is not purely evil and it was sort of a different approach to the character. I thought it would be really cool and fun, and I just like doing things that I think are fun and exciting. And obviously, meeting Lucy and getting to work with Missi Pyle was a major thing for me. I’m such a fan and I love the comedy roles, and this movie is actually very funny. There are a lot of funny moments, and there was a lot of opportunity for me to do some sort of comedic work, and I learned a lot from working with Missi Pyle and that was a major drawing point for me. It was just really fun. It was an opportunity to do something new.

Since the premise of A CINDERELLA STORY is that you can’t sing, does that mean that you don’t get to sing in it?
MEGAN: I don’t get to, which is such a bummer. I have to bad sing. I have to fake sing, which is actually really hard to purposefully bad sing off key. But, no, I don’t get to sing in A CINDERELLA STORY. Maybe I’ll get to sing in something else.

Did you guys have any jam sessions behind the scenes or anything fun like that?
MEGAN: We totally did actually. It’s so funny that you ask that because Missi Pyle—most people don’t know—is a great musician and has a band and has toured, and she had a good friend sing with her named Jenna who is also a musician, and it was amazing. And Lucy’s boyfriend at the time was a musician. My boyfriend’s a musician. So it kind of turned into like this crazy jam session a lot. And Freddie, of course, and Titus, everyone it seemed like, was sort of musical in a sense so it was really fun. Missi had this like great beach house and we were all staying down there, and we would play guitar out on the balcony. It was really fun. Everybody was like really into the whole music thing. It was great. Everybody had their guitar there at some point.

What was it like working with the cast of “So Undercover” and doing that movie?
MEGAN: That was probably the most fun four months of my entire life. We had too much fun. I look back I’m like, did we make a movie? Oh, yeah. I forgot because we just had so much fun the whole time. It was great. We were in such a magical city and to be there for that long and working with Miley and Kelly Osborne and Eloise Mumford. It was basically just all girls all the time. There was an actor Josh Bowman who is in it but he only came at the end so basically it was just a bunch of girls by ourselves the whole time. We all were staying together and we went to sorority boot camp because we’re in a sorority but the real sorority up in Baton Rouge, and we had so much fun. It did not seem like work, and by the time it was all over I couldn’t believe that we made a movie because we had so much fun. But we did so hopefully, people like the movie too.

What’s the biggest character difference between your role in this new film and your role as Grace in SECRET LIFE?
MEGAN: Playing Beverley and playing Grace are literally complete opposites. Grace is a very compassionate person and she really wants to please everyone, and Bev is pretty selfish and just kind of wants to get ahead. I mean they’re both really good people at the heart of it but Beverley is not necessarily the nice girl. So they’re pretty polar opposites, which was really fun to get to do something so different than Grace. It was kind of fun.

There seems to be like an East Indian theme to it, in the home and in the party, was there a special meaning in doing that?
MEGAN: I don’t exactly know because in the original script there wasn’t really any mention of that, but then the director said that they wanted to do a fresh take on the dance in a way that Katie could have her face covered that was kind of unique and fun and fresh. So they came up with a Bollywood idea for the dance so she could obviously be wearing the outfits with her face covered. And then, it ended up sort of like infusing itself into other parts of the movie and with the character Ravi and stuff like that. So it was really cool, and it just kind of made for a little more excitement and a different take on the whole theme of the movie, and it ended up being cool.

Where was A CINDERELLA STORY filmed and can you tell us something of your experiences on the set with your cast, producers, and directors?
MEGAN: We shot the movie in Wilmington, North Carolina, which is a beautiful little town, and we had a lot of fun there. It’s a cute place. There are lots of cute restaurants and we all were staying out by the beach. It was just amazing. Every night we were sort of like going out to dinner and hanging out with each other, and I really got to bond with Lucy and Missi Pyle the most. And the three of us spent a lot of time together, and they’re both just really inspiring and unique in their own way. I got to be goofy and silly with Lucy and just have fun and go out and be crazy. Then, with Missi I got to ask her a lot of questions and pick her brain and do lots of different things. It was really cool. We all had a really good time. Again, it seemed like I wasn’t really working, which is the best feeling.

Could you talk about working on the set, the actual shooting?
MEGAN: It was great being on set. The director was really cool. We spent a lot of time rehearsing everything ahead of time so when we actually got to the set it felt like everybody knew what was happening and what was going on. Honestly it was just a really simple great shoot. It felt like a really creative set. A lot of times we’d film and then the director would be like, hey, let’s just improv this one. Especially working with Missi Pyle, obviously she like to improv and it was hard to keep a straight face 90% of the time when working with her. But it was great. It was just a really simple set and it went really smoothly and other than having to do a lot of dance rehearsal and Lucy, I’m sure, having to do a lot of recordings ahead of time, that was the only thing I was really nervous about, was doing the dancing because I hadn’t danced a lot before. But it went well. It was just really smooth and effortless.

What was the experience like working with Lucy Hale?
MEGAN: Actually I just talked to her yesterday, I think, or the day before. She’s great. We met years before—we actually met in the audition room for SECRET LIFE, which is so weird. And I guess you’re supposed to be competitive, the people I auditioned with, but we just started chatting and became friends, and the she ended up doing PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and I did SECRET LIFE, so it’s kind of cool. And she’s just really easy going and cool, and when I found out that she was doing the movie that was one of the main reasons I wanted to be part of it, was to get a chance to work with her. And we bonded pretty much within the first ten minutes of the read through the first day, and never left each other’s side. Every day off we would go shopping in Wilmington and hang out, and that’s continued since we’ve been back in L.A. She’s just a really sweet girl and she’s very easy to get along with and we ended up having a lot in common. And she’s just really fun and dorky and goofy like I am and doesn’t take things too seriously so we got along really, really well. She’s a cool girl. And we both have major online shopping problems and online shopped together nonstop when we were filming so that was kind of the only bad part, that we egged each other on with the online shopping.

What’s happening with your band, Frank and Derol? And how did you team with Codi Caraco and Brandi Cyrus?
MEGAN: Basically, to make a really, really long story short, Codi was a good friend of mine who I met through my boyfriend, and she’s a really talented musician. She went to Berkeley School of Music, and we started playing music together. I play the guitar and I sing. I’ve been doing that since I was younger and it just sort of happened, I guess, organically as a friendship, and we were like, maybe we should start a band for fun, never thinking anybody would ever hear anything that we did. And so we started “Frank and Derol” just the two of us and started playing shows. And then I was living with Brandi Cyrus at the time, and she’s obviously is a musician as well as so we were like, ‘Hey, come play with us!” You know, she plays guitar so she started playing as well. And then people started really liking what we were doing, which was cool, and we put some stuff on MySpace and everything. And then it was kind of crazy because people started expressing interest in signing the band and all that sort of stuff. So then, once we got the opportunity to sign it sort of became—for me, acting is my passion and my main sort of focus and what I really love and music is more of a hobby. And for Brandi and Codi it was sort of their passion and what they really wanted to pursue. So we kind of sat down and had a conversation and I was like, well, why don’t you guys try to do the thing, sign and do the band full on, the two of you and I’ll still go hang out with you guys and write when I can and play with you. And it just kind of worked out that way for the best because to be honest it wasn’t something that I wanted to commit to fully, to take away from my acting because it was just sort of a fun hobby. And for them it was what they really wanted to do so I guess it was sort of fate that I met Codi and then introduced them, and we all sort of got to do that together. But it worked out for the best for everybody and they’re still my great friends. And it wasn’t like one of us left the band and it was all weird. It was just like, who wants to commit to the time of this, and it’s not that I didn’t want to commit. It’s just that I didn’t want to do something half-heartedly that I wasn’t going to be able to commit to 100% and my passion is in acting and I really wanted to pursue that. So that’s what happened, basically, with the band.

Are you working with the band?
MEGAN: No, officially the band is Codi and Brandi, and they’re doing the album. And I sort of play with them and write with them when I can, and some of the songs that I was originally writing are on the album. But I no longer am a part of the band.

We really love the character of Grace in THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER and we’ve actually seen a lot of evolution with her character throughout the season so could you talk about how you feel that Grace is going to evolve in the future?
MEGAN: Grace has kind of changed really drastically. And to be honest, this season is probably one of the seasons where Grace changes the most out of any year. There’s a lot of like new relationships and some really crazy self-awareness things that happen to her and some major lifestyle changes so it’s exciting. And I don’t really know—what happens with our characters and I never really know what to expect because I’ve been surprised before. But from the looks of it Grace is kind of becoming more independent and really, really going in a different direction than I thought she would ever sort of end up. So my guess is probably as good as yours. It’s kind of a surprise to me as well.

For your character Grace, what can we expect in the new season of SECRET LIFE from your character?
MEGAN: Grace changes as a person the most this season than any other season. She really starts questioning like a lot of major things in her life and really wants to make some serious changes. And she gets confused and she’s not really sure where her life is headed. So it’s like a really big personal discovery for Grace and new relationships, kind of shocking relationships. There’s a lot of growth with Grace. She really grows up this year.

Is it easy to make the transition from actually being an adult and then having to go and play a teenager in your various roles?
MEGAN: It hasn’t been frustrating. It’s actually felt really normal because it’s all I’ve ever known. I’m always really young for my age, just in life in general, I guess. I graduated high school, and then I just sort of moved on to the high school of SECRET LIFE and I’ve been doing that ever since I graduated high school, so it isn’t something that I’m frustrated with. I don’t really get cast for roles older than high school yet so I’m kind of totally fine riding this wave as long as it lasts. But there definitely is something in me that’s looking forward to playing more mature roles and growing up a little bit, but I’m kind of taking it in stride. As long as I’ll play high school, I’ll play high school, and when the time is right and the roles start coming for me to play older I’m totally going to be ready and excited to do that too.

SECRET LIFE has a pretty racy storyline, how did that work for you?
MEGAN: You know it’s kind of interesting when you sign on to a show because you’re basically signing on to play a character because you only really see the first episode of the show. And the pilot was just amazing to me, and it was kind of like shocking, the whole idea of—obviously the show is based on the secret sex life. I think that was the original title, was like the Secret Sex Life of the American Teenager or something like that. And it was sort of eye opening but I think that it was done in a way that was really real, educational, and it wasn’t something that I was embarrassed by. I mean I was really excited and proud to be a part of a show that was sort of breaking down the barriers of that. So no I wasn’t nervous about it and I’m not nervous about it. I think that it’s done in a really real way and that’s always been Brenda Hampton’s focus, not just to educate and to show different choices that people make and how their lives sort of turn out when they make those choices, the positives and the negatives, which I really like. So no it hasn’t made me nervous but it definitely is a risk when you sign on to a show and you don’t really know what’s going to happen, but I’ve just been really happy with everything so far, the way it’s turned out.

About the Gloriana music video “Kissed You Goodnight”, what was your experience like filming that?
MEGAN: It was so fun. We knew the band. My boyfriend knew them really well because he’s a musician, and they came to us and they said would you guys want to do this music video for us? You basically have to just fly to Nashville for a couple of days, hang out with us, and then you’d have to kiss a lot on camera. I was like, wow, this sounds like pretty much the easiest job of my entire life. I’m in. So we thought it would be cool and we loved the song. They sang it to us and obviously wanted to support and help our friend’s band in any way we could. They’re great and we like their music. And literally we got to go there and we filmed in this beautiful house in Nashville, a city that we both love, and we got to be in this music video and kiss. Obviously, he’s my boyfriend in real life and so it wasn’t awkward, and it was just a really fun thing to do. We had a great time. It was really cool.

Do you have any future plans and would you be open to doing more music videos?
MEGAN: I think I would probably love to be in my boyfriend’s music video, one of his at some point when his new record comes out. I think that would be pretty cool, but other than that no plans so far. We’ll just have to see what happens I guess.

As an actress, singer, style star you’re probably considered a triple threat right now in Hollywood. Do you have aspirations to grow the mini-mogul in the future?
MEGAN: I don’t know. I guess I’m not versed enough in like the mini-mogul world to know really like what’s involved. And I honestly really want to do projects that make me happy and hopefully make other people happy. I’m becoming more and more confident and am falling more and more in love with the whole world of comedy, and I think that’s something that I really want to explore a lot more. But right now, you know, that whole thing isn’t necessarily on my vision board of things that I’m aiming towards, but obviously being successful and reaching out to a lot of people is a goal. So if that means doing all those things that would be great but right now I just really want to make cool art that I like and work with people that inspire me, are kind of my main goals right now.

Would you ever consider writing a comedy for yourself?
MEGAN: Actually I am writing a comedy with Missi Pyle. We came up with the idea when we were working together on this movie, and she’s obviously an extremely experienced talented actress. And she kind of approached me and she’s like, I have this idea about this script. Would you like to work on it with me? And I’d never really written. I’d written in my free time but never professionally like we’ve been doing, and so I was like, okay. I’ll give it a shot. I don’t really know what I’m doing. But it’s been the most amazing experience and so rewarding. And we actually pretty much have written a script and it’s going to be going through rewrites and stuff like that. But I’m going to say that she’s the brains behind it and I just sort of helped out in any way I could and sort of helped her voice the young character in this script. But it’s been amazing and it’s obviously a comedy and it’s something that we hope will get made. It’s been pretty rewarding and we’re actually going to be taking a writing workshop together, I hope, at some point this year because for whatever reason our brains work really well together with writing. And she’s been teaching me a lot. So, yeah, it’s definitely something that I really want to explore more.

As noted our article “Hold on Tight, ABC Family’s New Series JANE BY DESIGN Will Steal Your Heart,” the new young adult series starring Erica Dasher is perhaps the most adorable show on television today. The show glows with warmth, charm and infectious humor. The trials and tribulations of a young teen who miraculously lands her dream job and then must find a way to keep it just swept us off our feet.

It is in no small part due to the great talents of Erica Dasher and her legendary co-star Andie MacDowell. Playing Jane Quimby and her fashion designer boss Gray Chandler Murray, Erica and Andie are a remarkable team. In their scenes together, one senses Jane and Gray’s mutual respect, affection and genuine desire to make their working relationship strong enough to withstand the devious maneuvering of their common foe, India Jourdain (India de Beauforte). It is a rare treat when so many television shows and films depict employees and their bosses as being at each others’ throats and tearing each other down. To see a healthier work relationship is intriguing and delightful.

To talk a bit about their new show and their characters, Erica and Andie answered questions via teleconference last week:

As can be seen, Erica and Andie are just as charming as their characters and it is a pleasure that we get to share the adventures of JANE BY DESIGN with them.

JANE BY DESIGN feels so lovingly crafted, that it reminds us of a deliciously prepared dessert. It is sweet in just the right amounts, has a scrumptious frosting overlaying a knee-meltingly gooey inside. The show is not just about the jaw-droppingly beautiful clothes and designs, it is about an array of characters that tease us and tantalize us with the different stories, facets and shenanigans they find themselves embroiled.

Jane’s world balances between her home life, her school life and her professional life at the fashion firm of Donovan Decker. At home, Jane acts as a surrogate parent for her well-meaning brother Ben (David Clayton Rogers), who is struggling to find a job in this increasingly turbulent economic climate. At school, Jane and her best friend Billy (Nick Roux) are the “invisible” students who are just trying to safely navigate the treacherous waters of high school — with secret crushes, last minute pop-quizzes and more homework than they know what to do with. Then at work, Jane is trying to pass herself off as an older young woman who is experienced enough to land the executive assistant position working for the illustrious Gray Chandler Murray.

As if all that were not enough, Jane also finds that she is inadvertently juggling three men in her life: her best friend Billy, her high school crush Nick (Matthew Atkinson), and her British co-worker Jeremy (Rowly Dennis). All three are enough to make any woman swoon!

So Jane’s life goes from uncomplicated to incredibly complicated virtually overnight. But with big dreams, comes big risks. When Jane decided to embrace her dream of working in fashion design, it opened doors to possibilities that she had never dreamed of. As Helen Keller once said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Kudos to Jane for daring to live a life of adventure!

To see where the journey and adventure leads, be sure to tune in for an all new episode of JANE BY DESIGN on Tuesdays nights at 9PM on ABC Family. Dare to dream along with Jane and fall in love all over again!

Every once in a while a television series comes along and whisks you off your feet. JANE BY DESIGN is that show. Debuting last week, the show’s premiere episode was charming, adorable and made you wish you were in Jane’s shoes as she landed an executive assistant position at a top ranked fashion design company. It is any 16-year old girl’s dream come true: to get their dream job and a chance at their dream guy too. But in Jane Quimby’s (Erica Dasher) world, you’d have to figure out who exactly is your dream guy as Jane has three potential dream men in her life.

The story of a young teen who applies for a coveted fashion design internship and somehow lands an even more desirable job as executive assistant to Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell) at Donovan Decker, an elite fashion design company, is a story we can all relate to. But Jane’s world is not a fairytale, she just happens to be in the right place at the right time because she chose to pursue her dreams. Being an executive assistant is never as easy as it sounds and when you are a high school student trying to hold down a job and not let on that you have never worked before, it is tricky to say the least.

In addition, Jane not only wants to work in fashion, she desperately needs the job in order to help pay the mortgage on the home she and her older brother Ben live in. With their parents M.I.A. and Ben (David Clayton Rogers) unable to find work in these strapped economic times, it falls on Jane to keep their shoe-string budget afloat. So some dreams come at a price. In this case, Jane needs this job and the paycheck it provides to make sure her home is not snatched away by the mortgage company.

Jane Quimby’s life suddenly becomes a lot more complicated. Going from high school “invisible” to working in high fashion overnight is a lot to get used to. For one, she still has to go to school, then get to work before her boss notices that she was not there already. She is just lucky to have a boss that checks in via video conference instead of hovering over her desk each day. But just as nosy and problematic is an upcoming designer India Jourdain (India de Beaufort) who would love nothing more than to usurp Jane’s boss and steal the limelight at the next big fashion show. Also adding to the tension at the office is the charming British designer, Jeremy Jones (Rowly Dennis), who shows great interest in Jane.

As if it were not enough to have a British designer looking to sweep her off her feet, Jane has also sparked the interest of Nick Fadden (Matthew Atkinson), the boy she has been dreaming about since the 7th grade. Then not to be excluded is Jane’s best friend, Billy Nutter (Nick Roux), who while pursuing his own secret romance is still always there for Jane just when she needs him. Such an abundance of riches, how is a girl to choose?!

So with the pressures of school, work, office politics, money problems, dodging a curious older brother, and an increasingly complicated love life, Jane’s world is spinning.

This may sound like a story you have heard before, but while the tale may be familiar, it is also exceedingly well-done and a pure confection of fun. It will melt your heart and be eternally grateful that creator April Blair and ABC Family brought the series to life. The fashion is fun, but it is the curious blend of Jane’s delightful comedic naiveté and the heart-warming people that populate her dazzling world that make it so infectious. Plus, Erica Dasher is simply scintillating – you can’t take your eyes off of her. It will make perfect sense how there are three men suddenly vying for her attention.

JANE BY DESIGN is a wonderful mixture of comedy and very subtle drama. It invites viewers to remember what it is like to be young and dreaming impossible dreams and when one or two suddenly come true, the simultaneous rush of excitement and desperation to hold on to it. Jane’s adventures are zany, humorous and utterly captivating – you’ll want to share in every delicious moment of it!

To catch up, ABC Family is re-airing the pilot episode Tuesday, January 10th at 6PM and then airing a brand new episode of JANE BY DESIGN later that same night at 9PM Whatever you do, make sure you watch this amazing show, you’ll thank me later!

In ABC Family’s hot teen mystery series THE LYING GAME, Alexandra Chando plays twins Emma and Sutton. In the first half of this season, Sutton has her twin sister take her place so that she can track down their birth mother. But the longer that Emma pretends to be her twin, the murkier and more entangled their lives become. Sutton’s search for their birth mother unearthed a woman by the name of Annie Hobbs, who was being kept in a psychiatric care facility. In the meantime, Emma discovers that she loves Sutton’s family and has fallen in love with her sister’s boyfriend. Outraged and betrayed, Sutton returns to unmask Emma and show what a fraud she is. But at the end of the mid-season finale, things take a more sinister turn as Sutton is last seen as her car sinks to the bottom a lake with a dark figure in the back seat. In an exclusive interview, Alexandra Chando shared what’s next for the twins and how their lives are affected by Sutton’s disappearance.

At the end of the mid-season finale, we last saw Sutton’s car disappearing into the lake. How long will it be before we find out if she survived or not?
ALEXANDRA: I think we find out within the first couple of episodes what happened to Sutton. In the first returning episode, they are not sure what happened to her. But it picks up right where we left off at the party. There’s still no sign of Sutton and I think that everybody kind of starts to wonder what could have possibly happened to her and sort of jump to the worst conclusion that she’s probably not still alive.

How does Emma feel about possibly having to continue pretending to be Sutton indefinitely now that Sutton is missing?
ALEXANDRA: I think, for her, it’s an interesting thing — because she obviously doesn’t want for her sister to be dead. She just found her and is trying to form a relationship with her. So she obviously doesn’t want for her sister to be dead, but I also think that she feels that she has a leash on her with this charade. I don’t know if she would come clean and say who she is, or just keep going. It’s kind of a really bad position.

So it’s something that is tearing at her soul a little bit as we go into this next half of the season.
ALEXANDRA: Yeah, I think it’s all starting to wear on her a little bit — keeping up the lie. She feels so much guilt for lying to Kristin, keeping things from her and she’s constantly going back and forth and struggles with whether she should tell somebody and come clean. So it’s starting to wear on her.

So how does that affect the relationship between Emma and Ethan? Because he’s obviously aware with what’s going on. Will they have other obstacles in their new relationship, or will this sudden change make things stronger for them?
ALEXANDRA: I think a little bit of both. One of the exciting things about the beginning of this next half of the season is Ethan and Emma can finally have a relationship. Because for the last 10 episodes they were kind of on this track of “should we or shouldn’t we”. Now they are finally able to allow themselves to be in a relationship, so we get to see into that world. But at the same time it’s television, as we know, and the second a couple gets happy, something happens to shake it up a little bit. That definitely happens here and there are things that kind of throw in a wedge between them.

Do you think now that Emma’s got to keep up the masquerade a little bit that people around her are really going to start to see the differences and suspect that this isn’t the girl they thought they knew, and does the charade become easier to continue for Emma?
ALEXANDRA: I think Emma is feeling the pressure a little bit, but she does her best to keep up the charade. It’s gotten a lot easier that Thayer knows, so at least she has Ethan and Thayer to confide in and work with her. The three of them form a great bond together. But, for the most part, Emma struggles with what to do and keeping up the charade.

Are they making a team effort to look into whose behind all these things, like the disappearance of Sutton, and are they looking to turn the tables on that person? Or are they still kind of just reacting to all these big changes that are happening to them?
ALEXANDRA: Right away, Emma, Ethan and Thayer are working to find out what happened to Sutton and what’s going on and what part Alex has in all of this. I think they are all starting to try to figure out the mystery of it all — and they are working together to do it and get some answers for themselves.

What excites you at this point as this season continues in playing Emma?
ALEXANDRA: There’s a lot! In every episode there’s definitely something fun to do or to play. I mean, gosh, time is flying and it’s all starting to blur together. I will say that one thing I’m excited about in the show is the fact that we’ve got Gil Birmingham from “Twilight” to come and play Ethan and Dad’s father. So we’ll get to take a closer look into Ethan and Dan’s past and answer the questions as to why Ethan is the way he is — which I think is cool because he’s the only character that’s not yet developed. His past is not developed yet.

Sounds like you’re just as excited as everyone else to find out more about each of the characters.
ALEXANDRA: Definitely!

How would you describe Charisma Carpenter’s new character Rebecca and how she fits into the lives of the Mercers? What kind of ripple-effect does that have on them?
ALEXANDRA: She comes in right away and when Emma hears Kristin call her Annie, she thinks it is her birth mother. But she’s actually Rebecca Sewell, who is Char’s aunt — and she is actually tied to Alec and Ted, as we quickly discover. I actually haven’t had too many scenes with her yet, except one or two in passing. So she’s kind of involved in the older crowd, but I know she’ll have an effect on a lot of the characters — especially Emma.

What can you share about the “unexpected encounter” upcoming in the January 16th episode that could turn Emma’s life upside down?
ALEXANDRA: Oh boy, that’s a tough one! I don’t know if I can answer that one without giving anything away. [Laughter]

To see what kind of trouble Rebecca stirs up and the ultimate fate of Sutton, be sure to tune in for an all new episode of THE LYING GAME on Monday, January 2nd at 9PM on ABC Family.

In anticipation of tonight’s mid-season finale of THE LYING GAME, theTVaddict.com recently had the opportunity to interview Alexandra Chando. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the talented series star who is currently pulling double-duty playing identical twins on the hit ABC Family series was somewhat tight-lipped when it came to whether or not Sutton and Emma’s web of lies and deceit will catch up with them. In fact, the only thing we know for sure is that tonight’s episode gives new meaning to the term “Game Changer.” But hey, don’t take our word for it, see for yourself after the jump.

Since you play the twins, Sutton and Emma, do you ever feel like you’re rooting for one over the other; or are you torn over which one deserves Sutton’s life?
ALEXANDRA: Based on who they are, I feel for Emma and I do root for her. But, on the same token, Sutton — granted it was her decision to have Emma kind of take over her life, but I do feel for her as well because I think that she didn’t know what she was getting into when she had this idea. So I feel like it kind of back-fired and I do feel for her as well.

Do you have the sense that perhaps Sutton has the suspicion or inkling that her friends and family may prefer Emma over Sutton and that she may have a problem trying to reclaim her life?
ALEXANDRA: Probably. I know enough that there is an upcoming interaction between Sutton and her mother and I think it is very clear that the relationship-dynamic has changed between the two of them. So I think that is definitely a red-flag for her and she can see that Emma is definitely treated her friends and family differently than she had.

So she has some kind of idea that things might be changing. Do you think that her plan may have back-fired on Sutton because she went in search of her birth-mother and that makes her current foster parents feel rejected; thus perhaps fuelling the rejection they may feel in return once they find out about what she did?
ALEXANDRA: I don’t know. I definitely think that she is in way over her head and coming back, she kind of sees that. I think she kind of regrets a lot of her decisions and regrets the fact that it went on as long as it did.

What is one quality you admire the most about each of the twins since they are such different characters?
ALEXANDRA: Emma’s warm-heartedness and care for others; and Sutton’s strength and ability to navigate through situations no matter what the variables are.

In trying to distinguish between the twins, is there something that you physically do as an actress to try to define and shape them besides their hair styles and clothes — are there different body postures you employ?
ALEXANDRA: Definitely! With Sutton, she holds herself with very perfect posture and just the way she stands. She’s just a solid individual. She’s a presence when she stands, and I try to do as much as I can in her body language.

Do you ever find yourself in a scene wondering which character you’re playing, or is it easy for you distinguish between them?
ALEXANDRA: For the most part, it is pretty easy to distinguish. I think in the beginning it was a little tough. Then with the names, like in this last episode, everyone was calling Sutton “Emma,” so that was difficult. I am so used to Sutton being Sutton, and Emma being Sutton. So that got a little confusing. I have to check myself every now and then. But for the most part, the way that the roles are written, it really helps to differentiate as well and it helps me to not get confused in the situations that they are in. We also try to film them separately on different days, so that also helps. I’ll be Sutton all one day, and Emma the rest.

If you could sit down Emma and Sutton, what kind of advice would you give each of them to give them clarity on where their lives should go?
ALEXANDRA: I would tell Sutton to not take the family that she has for granted, which she has. I mean, she was raised in a really great environment and setting; though now we know Ted is a little bit of a liar, but for the most part she was brought up in a really great household and she was really unappreciative of that. And I think, for her, one of the things is not to take that for granted and that while it is okay to be self-reliant, she is a selfish individual and she needs to be more caring of others. Then, for Emma, I don’t know what I’d say to her. I feel like Emma has a really good head on her shoulders. That’s a tough one.

As an actress, you get to wear some really fabulous clothes on the show. Do you ever feel like you would like to take some of it home and keep in your own closet?
ALEXANDRA: Yes, every day! Our costume designer is fantastic! She finds the coolest stuff and puts together these awesome outfits. Outfits that I wouldn’t necessarily think to put together on my own, but they definitely inspire me in my real life, and I wish I could take every article of Sutton’s clothing home. Even her shoes, which some of them are really uncomfortable, they are really awesome!

So what can you tease about the mid-season finale?
ALEXANDRA: Well, Sutton and Emma are reunited and there’s definitely some juicy drama happening there. Emma throughout the episode is troubled about whether she would be honest and what she should do — should she leave — if she should tell everybody who she is — and expose herself. And some more secrets and the cliff-hanger — just the cliff-hanger alone is enough to have people tune-in. It’s really worth it.

With the promise of an exciting and climatic mid-season finale ahead as Sutton and Emma fight for life they both want, but perhaps only one will get what she deserves, be sure to tune in on Monday, October 17th at 8PM on ABC Family Channel.
