For a young, upcoming actor working on one hot TV show is the dream – but getting to work on six within one year is an abundance of riches. So actor Jarod Joseph is having a hell of a year having had the pleasure of working on ARROW, ROGUE, ONCE UPON A TIME, FRINGE, THE L.A. COMPLEX and the CBS pilot BACKSTROM. In an exclusive interview, Jarod talked about getting his first real break as a series regular in the DirecTV drama series ROGUE and some of his favorite memories from working on ARROW and FRINGE.

This past year looks to have been a busy year for you. What are you currently working on?
JAROD: I finished ROGUE last November and started work on ARROW, of which I’ve done 3 episodes of at this point and the finale for that airs this Wednesay. I also shot a pilot with Rainn Wilson from THE OFFICE called BACKSTROM, which is hopefully going to get picked up by CBS [Editor's Note: It didn't]. Though I did a guest appearance on BACKSTROM and I probably wouldn’t be back, but you never know. It’s a strong show and I think it should be on TV.

On ROGUE, you played Detective Nicholas Fleming. What did you like about portraying that character?
JAROD: It’s cool. He starts out as a young, excitable, spunky detective in the Oakland P.D. He’s really by-the-book in a traditional sense and he wants more responsibility but the higher ups are reluctant to give it to him. But as you watch as the season unfolds, he gets a little bit more over his head. It was nice to play that because of the growth. The character is not really defined by the first or last episode, so there was a lot of room to grow, which I enjoyed doing; and it was cool for me to get more responsibility script-wise.

ROGUE certainly is dark and twisty. You just never know where it’s going to go.
JAROD: Absolutely. It’s darker that’s for sure. There’s no rules on that show. It’s one of the few that doesn’t have any rules.

Did you find it inspiring to work with other actors like Thandie Newton and Marton Csokas?
JAROD: It’s crazy. I’ve always said that Thandie is a huge inspiration to me as an actor of color and as someone who has sustained a career as long as she has. She’s someone I’ve watched my whole life, so to be on an even playing field for a bit was cool. And Marton is going to stay a friend of mine, as is most of the cast. He and Ian Hart and everyone I worked with was awesome.

One of the things that surprised me about ROGUE is that it is very cinematic. Did you have any idea when you were working on it that it would turn out so visually strong?
JAROD: I did. Our DP Kieran McGuigan was brought on because of the specific style that he had and the knack that he has for color. He just has an out of the norm way of shooting things. So we all pretty much trusted that it was going to look great. I think it is the only show that has the tone that it has. It has a very interesting tone and I think that they covered Vancouver very well.

It looks like they painted some of the episodes. It just looks very visually like its art. It has to be something to work on a show that wants to be more than just a procedural, it wants to be art.
JAROD: Absolutely. I knew that from the get-go it was going to be in the same vein as the darker procedural shows of the past and I knew it was going to be stylistic. Just from the storyboards they had up before the characters were put in front of the camera and the outfits that they chose. Everything was pretty meticulous.

Were you surprised by any of the twists in the ROGUE storyline?
JAROD: Definitely. I got stuff that involved me that I had no idea was coming and I’d read it and think, “Really?! That’s what you’re doing to me?!” It’s pretty cool. I liked the unpredictability.

Like after the episode where they beheaded a couple of people and you probably started thinking, “That’s not going to happen to me, is it?!”
JAROD: (Laughs) Exactly. Matthew Parkhill was very private. He would say, “Here’s the script. Here’s what we’re doing” and it was like, “Okay, cool.”

What can you tease about what’s upcoming for the last couple episodes of the season of ROGUE?
JAROD: Everything will be answered. I’ll say that much. It’s not really one of those shows that is going to leave you hanging until an entirely new season. It’s going to be positioned in a way that it’s going to have new people in the forefront and some people sent down, I guess you could say.

What’s going on with ARROW? What was the most recent episode you worked on?
JAROD: Episode 22 and 23, the finale. There’s some closure to come.

This last episode (Episode 22) was off the hook and we’ve heard it gets even more intense. What role did you play in the finale?
JAROD: You can kind of see where it is going with my position. I played a hostage in Episode 15 and it was revealed that by Oliver not releasing me that he made the correct decision because I turn out to be a bad guy. I work with fires. And we’re going to just continue where we left off in terms of the flashbacks and we’ll see who makes it out alive.

We’re a little worried that there’s going to be a bulls-eye on some familiar faces in the finale.
JAROD: (Laughs) People have got to go down – and people are going down.

What has it been like for you to work on ARROW?
JAROD: It’s like any other show that has been on where it has a rapport and a kind of system that they work on. You just kind of want to show up and blend in. Everyone was very gracious. But there’s designated roles and a procedure to follow. It’s not that militant as it sounds, but overall it was very neat.

Between ROGUE and ARROW, those are intense shows with a lot of physicality. Did you get to participate in that and jump into the fray?
JAROD: Yeah. We did gun training at the beginning of ROGUE with Thandie and Marton and Josh [Sasse]. Thandie knocked us out of the park. We were terrible; she was great. But we did all terrains so that when we shoot that nothing is TV-cop. We wanted to hold the guns they way they really hold it and all that stuff. But in terms of the action, I had to recommend that I wanted to do a lot of my own stuff. So I definitely get into the mix there.

Is that a preference when you’re looking at a role? That you look for ones that a little more physical.
JAROD: Not necessarily. I like roles that are human. If it is a guy in a fight, then I like to do as much of it as possible. If it’s a guy that is spilling something, I want to spill it. So it is not necessarily the action aspect, but I definitely want to bring it to life as much as I can. I like storytelling and I like the human aspect of it.

You have done such a variety of roles in the past year. How do you choose your roles?
JAROD: The selection process for me at this point is once in a while you get something you really dig and you put it on tape and you cross your fingers. I just happen to be getting some cool roles. Most of them that I’ve crossed my fingers for I’ve been getting. So I’m just really fortunate to be this young and to be doing such diverse work. It doesn’t always happen that way, so I’m pretty lucky.

You have also been playing a recurring role on ONCE UPON A TIME. Are you going to do more in future?
JAROD: I have no idea. I never have any idea. I only find out days before. It was like that for FRINGE and pretty much everything I’ve ever done where I would only find out a few days before.

As fans would probably want to know, what was your favorite memory from working on FRINGE?
JAROD: Talking with Josh Jackson. We’d be talking between takes a little bit about making it as a Canadian actor. He had such great fortune at such a young age and he grinded it out. So I wanted his point of view since he is such a success story. Those were invaluable moments. They weren’t extensive, but I’ll take them with me. It’s great advice that you can’t get anywhere else. So talking with Josh was great.

Of your more recent work, what have you loved best? What made you think, “I just loved that and I can’t wait to do that again”?
JAROD: ROGUE. It as my first series regular position will always stick with me. The naiveté that I had coming on board and the discovery that I had as an actor towards the end. And the comfort that I got with each episode was probably the most valuable thing that I’ve experienced. So I’m proud of the season we have and I hope people like it.

Sounds like you’re on a real lucky-streak and you’re having a lot of fun.
JAROD: (Laughs) That’s exactly what’s going on. I couldn’t have written this better. This is crazy.

To see what is next for Jarod in the dark, twisty world of ROGUE, be sure to tune in for all new episodes on Wednesdays at 9PM on DirecTV. You can also catch him in the epic season finale of ARROW on Wednesday, May 15th at 8:00 p.m. on the CW. (And with a little more luck we’ll see a bit more of him as Billy on ONCE UPON A TIME in some fun flashbacks next season.)

After one hell of a wild ride this first season, ARROW is not about to hit the brakes in its final hour – particularly when the first season finale is racing towards a major explosion, one of the earthquake kind and another involving hidden secrets. In an exclusive interview, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg previewed what our heroes will be faced with in the finale, whether there is hope for the budding romances, and whether death will come a calling.

After witnessing the Laurel/Oliver tryst will Tommy’s broken heart propel him down a much darker path for the 2nd season?
ANDREW: Tommy’s broken heart will put people to a very unexpected place. There have been the fans waiting for Tommy to turn to the darkside and then there are fans that are hoping he won’t. I think in the finale, the way things lay out, people are going to be both surprised and, we hope, gratified at the path that Tommy takes.

So Tommy could be taking a path of his own choosing and he may not be choosing the light path or the dark path yet?
ANDREW: Everyone in the finale is faced with a choice and I think Tommy’s choice is one of the more interesting that we have come up with.

Oliver is of course going to be keeping this big secret from Laurel as he’s probably not going to be telling her about his secret identity any time soon. How long can their romance last in the face of that challenge?
ANDREW: (Laughs) I don’t know. They got away with it for a pretty long time on SMALLVILLE. I think Season 1 has proven to the audience that we’re interested in defying expectations. So in Season 2 some people may find out Oliver’s secret and it may not be who people are expecting; but at the heart of the series is the Oliver/Laurel romance. So if her finding out sooner rather than later is the most exciting and dramatic way to tell the story, then that’s something we’ll pursue. But if her being none the wiser serves our purposes, then that’s what we’ll stick with.

So you’re not giving any hope for the Oliver/Felicity fans who are waiting on that romantic opportunity?
ANDREW: I certainly think that for the Olicity shippers there’s a nice moment for them in the finale. We never say “never” on this show. When Greg, Marc and I created ARROW, Felicity wasn’t a part of the pilot. It was sort of a one-off character and we had some fun with the writing and Emily filled in the rest; and now none of us can imagine the show without her. So where that relationship goes is something that is constantly surprising us. It’s definitely something we’ll be exploring in the future.

What about Roy and Thea? We saw their painful breakup in the last episode. Is there going to be any hope for them or is Roy going to be determinedly following his own path?
ANDREW: The Roy/Thea relationship is something we’re really invested in and it’s something we’re looking forward to playing with moving forward. They’re crazy kids. They say things they didn’t mean. They have some great scenes in the finale that we’re really excited about.

One of things we’ve noticed is there are a lot of raging hormones on the show and you are not afraid to go there. What would you say is the next coupling that people should keep an eye out for?
ANDREW: Good question. I don’t think there’s any new couplings in the finale that are going to surprise people, but we have some ideas for Season 2 that we think will be some jaw-droppers.

And what about Walter? It looked like he might be gone for good. Is Colin Salmon still with the series?
ANDREW: We had Colin booked for 2 more episodes this season, and as you can see, Walter did not die. He’s still out there in the world. We love working with Colin and there’s always the possibility he’ll be back for more in the future.

That would be awesome! Every time he’s on screen, I just want to hug him. There’s something warm about him. You just want to be a part of his world.
ANDREW: (Laughs) I could just listen to his voice all day. He could read the phone book to me and I’d happily listen.

The other big shocker was the hood coming off and Malcolm Merlyn discovering the identity of Oliver as the Hood? How does that bode for Malcolm?
ANDREW: It’s all personal now. It’s one of the things we’re proudest – how we designed this season and that we hit upon Malcolm as the ultimate villain. It’s Shakespearean since he killed Oliver’s father. There’s that vendetta to settle. But they have all been family friends for so long. I think Malcolm’s reaction at the end was the most telling. He wasn’t necessarily happy to have beaten the Hood because when he discovers its Oliver, his first reaction is “oh no,” because now he knows he may have to kill his son’s best friend and it’s already broken his heart to have to kill Robert. He doesn’t want to cause Moira or the Queen family any more pain – but, as always, Malcolm’s pain comes first and that could have dire consequences both for the city and the Queen family in the finale.

Rumor is that there may be a big death in the finale. Is that going to be happening? Are we going to have hold our breath?
ANDREW: (Laughs) You don’t really want to know, do you? My wife watched the last episode and she said, “I haven’t felt like this since we watched ‘24’ together.” So that made me really proud. I think people should tune in for the finale. It’s definitely a game-changer and I think people are going to be shocked by the outcome—and that’s as much as Warner Bros., DC, and my own conscience let me say.

Would you be able to say for the DOCTOR WHO fans whether we’ll ever see a scene with John Barrowman and Alex Kingston together on the show?
ANDREW: I guess that’s always a possibility. The fact that I’ve got John Barrowman and Alex Kingston’s numbers in my phone every day fills me with glee and joy. But, yeah, there’s always a possibility.

That would be just the best scene ever!
ANDREW: (Laughs) I’d rather see them on DOCTOR WHO together. Who wants to see them as Malcolm and Dinah on ARROW when we can see River and Jack?

Getting back to ARROW, what part is Diggle going to play in the finale?
ANDREW: It’s a real nice culmination of Oliver and Diggle’s friendship from over the course of the season. When we started they were wary of each other and very distrustful and they have had several falling outs over the course of the season. But it’s really nice to see them come together as friends and partners in the finale. The character of Diggle is something we’re so proud of because he’s not from the comics and he’s really our own invention. He’s become a fan favorite and now you almost can’t imagine the Green Arrow without his trusted friend and bodyguard, John Diggle. I think that important status in Oliver Queen’s life really is cemented in the finale.

To see whether the ARROW producers did dare kill off any of our fan favorite characters or left their fates hanging in the finale, be sure to tune in Wednesday, May 15th at 8PM on the CW (7PM on CTV in Canada). The Undertaking is revealed and heroes are unmasked.

Some say villains are made and others say that they are born that way. But there is a school of thought that some villains choose their destiny regardless of their birthright or upbringing. This just may be the case with ARROW’s latest villain Mr. Blank. Born unable to connect with others, he relates only to his surroundings. Taking that unique ability, he found a decisively diabolical career for himself and put it to good use. In an exclusive interview, J. August Richards talked about trying to get into the mind of a sociopath, as well as what continues to draw him time and time again to the allure of genre television.

So who is Mr. Blank? Who is he and what can you share about him?
J: Mr. Blank is an assassin who has been hired to silence a few witnesses. That’s kind of how he crosses paths with Oliver. He takes his work very seriously and he lives his entire life to be invisible. As an actor that was just really interesting to delve into because I thought about how lonely that must be, and it also kind of explained to me why the character has no feelings towards people. Like the work that he has to do is not personal and he does not lament it at all. He just does it. Just like someone would enter numbers into a computer, that is what his work is to him. So it is a really interesting character to play. I don’t know why anybody thought I would be good for this part, but I really enjoyed doing it. I’m the sort of person who is very empathetic. So it was a reach, but a fun one.

I bet they were just fans of your work and they wanted to find an excuse to put you on the show.
J: (Laughs) That works for me too! Apparently Andrew Kreisberg said he saw my work on EMILY OWENS, M.D. and he thought of me for the part. I thought that was really, really cool. There no similarities between the characters, but it was really fun to do. I really enjoyed playing the villain.

What would you say was the one particular quality that you most admired about Mr. Blank?
J: You know what I really loved about this character — and I have to honest and say I feel funny admitting there is something I love about this character – but he can walk into a room and take the temperature instantly, and be 100% accurate. You know how you walk into a space in someone’s house and the space feels good, warm, inviting or if it doesn’t, it feels painful or sad – he can feel that immediately. Now he can’t feel anything for a person, but he can feel it for a room. I thought that was really, really cool.

How do you convey something like that, or do you just kind of stand there?
J: It’s so hard. ‘Cause when I first read the script, I was like, “Okay, we’re shutting off all emotion.” But then when I got to the parts or lines where he would be really analyzing a room, I thought, “No, no, no. This character is extremely dialed in.” He’s extremely emotionally available. Just not to people, only to spaces. And that was very difficult to turn off my extreme empathy and turn on my sensitivity to a space. That was very, very difficult, but fun. It was a great challenge.

Are we going to be seeing Mr. Blank in scenes with anyone besides Oliver?
J: My friend David Ramsey is on the show and unfortunately we never got to act together, which sucked for me ‘cause we’ve done probably three projects together – this being the third – and the other times we got to work together a lot. So we didn’t work together at all this time. I did a brief scene with Katie [Cassidy], a brief scene with Willa [Holland], as well as Colton [Haynes]. But not much at all. Really the majority of my stuff was with Steven [Amell].

It is almost unbelievable that you missed working with David since his character interacts the most closely with Oliver.
J: I know. I know! That really sucked.

What did it feel like to return to the genre a little bit after a couple years working on legal shows?
J: Actually, I did a fair number of appearances on genre shows like WAREHOUSE 13 and THE 4400, in addition to my work on ANGEL. I really enjoy working in sci-fi because I really feel like you are really required to act. That’s what I love about sci-fi. Sci-fi always has these large themes going on that you do not always get in contemporary dramas. So you really get to play those things out as well as you have to create so much. So it really feels like I’m really getting act when I do science fiction projects.

So when you heard they wanted you to guest on ARROW, did you think, “Oh thank god, I’m going back to genre!”?
J: (Laughs) Yes, and I’m a fan of the show. So that was a plus. The truth is: yes. Especially after I read the script because there’s a lot of stunts and there is just a massive fight scene with Stephen that I got to do. That I love. I don’t know what it is; maybe it’s ‘cause when I was a little boy I played “Star Wars” all the time and me and my friends would fight each other with fake lightsabers. But I just love fight scenes and I love stunts, and when I saw that I was getting to do that, I was in immediately.

So you find sci-fi to be more physically active and a richer tapestry emotionally for you when you do those kinds of characters within the genre?
J: Definitely both. The important thing is your work in science fiction must really be grounded in reality. For example, when I was doing ANGEL, my character hated vampires and I saw it almost like a form of racism in a way, like hating a group. So I thought, “While my character really hates a group, so what group do I hate?” I really wanted to make it real for myself, but my problem was I don’t hate any group. In fact, I feel like my purpose on Earth is to end racism or any kind of –ism. I’m really against any bad feelings towards any kind of group. But then I thought, “Oh, there actually is a group I do hate and that’s bigots of any kind.” So in my mind I kind of transferred the vampires and made them bigots. That’s how I was able to find the fire and the hate. So I find in science fiction you have to come from a real place and find real motivations to make the world real for yourself.

ARROW is really fond of its villains. Is there a particular villain on the show that you’re fond of?
J: Deadshot is very cool, obviously.

Would you have enjoy it if Mr. Blank and Deadshot had a scene together?
J: Absolutely. I’ve love a fight scene with him.

Did you see your character Mr. Blank as a villain or did you see him as something else?
J: No. I definitely saw him as a working guy. He’s a guy who takes his work very seriously and I’m a guy who takes my work very seriously. So I never ever saw him as a villain. I saw him as someone with a job to do.

There has been an interesting trend where some villains see themselves as a hero, like they saw what they were trying to do as good. Did you sense that was a part of Mr. Blank’s motivation?
J: Absolutely not. I do not think he falls into that category. I know that character well ‘cause a lot of times I feel like I’m put in that role where I play characters like that a lot. Very gray characters. But this character I just saw as performing a task, which is actually more diabolical than anything. This is just work to him. Nothing personal. It’s: “I’ve been hired to complete a service. This is my business.” That was the phrase I used in my own mind a lot: “This is my business – and I have to protect my business.” And he just saw it as a business as any other. Now that’s very difficult for a person like me who’s very empathetic, but that’s how I had to see it.
Heroes and villains go hand in hand. They make for the ultimate co-dependent relationship; but it also makes for riveting storytelling. Knowing better than most the power of playing a hero or a villain is actor John Barrowman, who has made a solid career out of portraying both. Beloved for his infamous role as Captain Jack in both DOCTOR WHO and TORCHWOOD, John is a fan-favorite in the superhero/sci-fi realm. Adding another feather to his cap (pun intended), John recently tackled the role of Malcolm Merlyn in the CW series ARROW. When revealed last winter that Malcolm was The Dark Archer of DC comic-lore, fans welcomed him jubilantly. No longer just the “well-dressed man” of ARROW or the heartless father of Tommy Merlyn, by donning the black attire and landing a few well-placed arrows The Dark Archer staked a claim in Starling City against the vigilante known as The Hood (aka the Green Arrow).

In a recent exclusive interview, John shared how he came to be a part of the DC verse of superheroes and villains, as well as candidly talking about the DOCTOR WHO 50th anniversary, the future of TORCHWOOD, and a few words about his cryptic role on SCANDAL.

How does it feel to portray an outright villain this time as Malcolm Merlyn on ARROW?
JOHN: It feels good. The funny thing and the irony of it is I don’t see him as a villain. I know he is, but I think people have attached themselves to him because I don’t play him like the quintessential “mwah ha ha” villain. I try to give him a bit of humanity, a little bit of caring, a little bit of heart, a bit of soul; so everything he’s doing is not just bad. There’s a reason why he’s doing everything. That way people who are watching can feel that they understand why he is doing it and hopefully they tend to kind of forgive him a little bit. What it also does is it makes him very similar to Oliver – just that both of them are going about it in very different ways. So it’s great to play a villain. It’s fantastic. I get to do things on television that I don’t get to do in my real life.

Like dressing up in a costume?
JOHN: Well, yeah. I’ve been dressing up my entire career. (Laughs) But just getting to dress up like I do in the Dark Archer stuff, and also getting to manipulate people. To do that kind of thing is just amazing.

You’ve brought a level of joyousness to Malcolm and, as you said, you’re not playing it very heavy-handed. It’s almost like he’s very happy all the time, which is unusual.
JOHN: That’s what I’m saying. He thinks he is right, and when you think you’re right there is an element of euphoria when you feel that in your personal life. It’s like me standing on the outside judging and looking in. I can only go from what I know and what I do, and the fact of the matter is that I like to bring a little bit of my personality to every thing that I play, and I think that that euphoria and joyfulness comes ‘cause I actually enjoy what I’m doing. So maybe that comes across, but everybody in their life whether they are bad or good, they do still smile. They do still laugh. They still enjoy their lives to a certain extent. So I try to give that across.

It seems like Malcolm is in a content and happy place in his life. Like he feels like he is in control. He exudes that power.
JOHN: That’s ‘cause he is. He is one of the biggest one-percenters. He feels what he is doing as a cause is right. He’s got part of his family back around him. He feels he is in control of them. He feels in control of the city that he loves, or he thinks he is. So of course he is going to be euphoric and happy.

If you could identity one quality you most admire about Malcolm, what would it be?
JOHN: His drive. His drive and his tenacity, and his kind of focus on stuff. When he is determined about something, he goes and gets it. It’s kind of what I do, but I’m not as ruthless as he is. I’ll go after it the right way, but I admire that in him.

You’ve brought up that Malcolm sees himself as the hero of his own story. He thinks he’s helping the city, but does he understand that what he’s doing is not necessary for the benefit of the city?
JOHN: To be honest, and I don’t want to give too much away, a lot of that is described in something that he says in the finale.

So he’ll explain his actions?
JOHN: That question is kind of answered. He sees what he is doing is absolutely vital and correct, and you find out in a more descriptive way as to why he is doing what he is doing. I think when people hear how he describes and what he has done and what he has in his possession that he lets Tommy know about, you’ll understand why he is doing what he is doing. Then you’ll actually go, “Oh my god!” But you’ll think, “Jesus, don’t do it.”

Another thing I’ve been wondering about is why isn’t Malcolm’s name in the book that Oliver carries around. If Malcolm is as truly evil as we’re kind of suspecting he may be, wouldn’t his name be in the book?
JOHN: Well, not necessarily because the book was created by Oliver’s father as a — uh, this is getting into the area where things might develop, so I don’t want to give too much a way – but let’s say the book was written by his father and Malcolm and Moira, and maybe they were in cahoots about this, but they are not going to put their own names in there.

Good point! It was just something I’ve been wondering about, thinking, “Shouldn’t Malcolm’s name be on there?”
JOHN: They are in complete control of this.

I can’t wait to see more about that and because everyone has been ramping up the excitement over the big finale for a couple of months now, I’m dying to know more about it.
JOHN: It will be mega. The finale is going to be epic and we’re in the process of filming it at the moment and I know the scenes I’m in – I’m not in all of the scenes, a huge chunk of it, but not every day and I feel blessed to be there every day at the moment for about 14-15 hours a day, and in other weeks, I’ve gone only in every other day. So it’s a long process. So the finale is going to be epic. Everything we do on ARROW is a bit cinematic and this is going to be like a mega-movie blockbuster.

So exciting! Is the Dark Archer going to make another appearance?
JOHN: I’m not going to tell you. (Laughs) But it’s going to be awesome.

Where is the relationship between Tommy and Malcolm headed right now?
JOHN: Again, you’ll have to see ‘cause that all comes into fruition and things come together or happen in the finale. As it leads up to the finale, you learn more about Tommy and his relationship with his dad. Again, there’s a lot revealed to Tommy in the finale. So you just kind of have to watch, which is interesting ‘cause I’ve always said that although Tommy is the son that Malcolm has been trying to shape into, if Malcolm could be honest and actually choose a son and if he knew who really Oliver is, he’d choose Oliver.

The secrets they keep. It’s so suspenseful.
JOHN: That’s not been written, but it kind of my sub-story and sub-text that I sometimes play when I’m doing stuff with Oliver.

Have you and Colin O’Donnell actually sat down and discussed the budding relationship between Malcolm and Tommy, and to what level you want to convey whether they are getting along or not getting along?
JOHN: Most of us don’t sit down and discuss that. I put my trust in the writers. I trust what they are writing and however they want to develop the character. That’s what makes episodic television for me as an actor great because every time I come in, it’s something brand new. It’s something different and it’s a new challenge to explore. So the relationship with Tommy, it’s great to see how it progresses. But I can’t tell you because I already know what progresses. (Laughs)

There always seems to be a level of curiosity between Tommy and his father; like they are curious who the other person really is and they really don’t know, even though they have known each other their whole lives.
JOHN: I can only speak for Malcolm. Malcolm sees Tommy as a bit of a waste of space, to begin with. That’s why he cuts him off and forces him to get a job. It’s to realize the value of work because he’s basically been a trust-fund baby his entire life. So Malcolm wants his son to toughen up and to get a thicker skin; ‘cause to be honest, Malcolm is a little bit jealous of Tommy’s life because Malcolm had to work so hard and to develop such a tough skin because of things he’s taken on board in Starling City and about his wife’s death to protect Tommy from that. Yet he wants Tommy also be as tough as he is, to work as hard and maybe to come on board and to be a part of the clean-up of Starling City. So he wants kind of both sides of the coin. But will he get it? We don’t know.

When they first introduced the Dark Archer, he seemed to want to draw out The Hood and he kind of viewed him as competition. But they haven’t fully explained Malcolm’s motivations for wanting to draw out The Hood. He wanted to engage and trap The Hood, but we weren’t sure why.
JOHN: This is again not written, but this is how I looked at it when I played those first sequences. I saw this vigilante– I’m speaking as Malcolm and the Dark Archer — I saw this vigilante getting in my way, although he was doing what I was doing. Look at it this way; this is somebody who is very troubled kind of anti-hero (talking about Malcolm). So I saw The Hood taking away my glory and my mission and my objective and getting in the way. So I wanted to get rid of him. Not knowing who he is makes it easier. (Laughs) If that makes any sense.

Fascinating. It was just like the Dark Archer came out of the blue and wanted to engage The Hood and it made me wonder what sparked his interest.
JOHN: Yeah, thinking again like Malcolm, it’s like I saw this guy coming around doing the job I wanted to be doing and wondering, “who the hell is he and why is he doing it?” Because his objectives may not be the same as mine.

You’ve thought about this a lot. Did you know when you took the role that you’d be playing the Dark Archer as well as Malcolm?
JOHN: I did. I was told right off the bat. It was kind of funny when they offered me the role. Andrew Kreisberg and I had a phone conversation before the show had started and it was almost like he was apologizing ‘cause the role wasn’t a big role and after we talked e and he explained it to me, I said, “You know, from the passion in your voice, I like to be involved with programs where people are passionate about the work and the characters ‘cause to me that means that it’s going to be good – plus, I’m a DC comics fan and if you’re saying I’m going to be in a way another type of superhero, whether it be a bad or good one – having come from the world of sci-fi playing Captain Jack and being a hero in that aspect – how great to play something completely different.” So I jumped at it. I knew that he was going to be the Dark Archer and I was excited to explore how that was going to come about.

Were you anxious to jump into a role of being a father as well as a superhero?
JOHN: (Laughs) I was a bit more apprehensive about that! It’s funny ‘cause a lot of people have commented and said I’m not old enough to be Tommy’s dad, but we actually have looked at the logistics of it and Malcolm would have had him in his teens with his wife. So it would have been a teen pregnancy, which would have forced him to go out into the world to provide for his family, which is part of the work-ethic that Malcolm has. Also the Island of Nanda Parbat, which is where Malcolm went off to train after the death of his wife. You’ll find out more about that. I don’t want to give too much away. But there is a thing about Nanda Parbat, if you read it in the DC history that there’s something about – I won’t say “eternal youth” – but there’s a quality that keeps the people there youthful. The island itself gives them a youth factor, and that’s one of the explanations also. It’s never been explained, but that’s in the backstory and I’ve done the research. So Malcolm can be Tommy’s father even though some people say I look like his brother.

You do look pretty young to be a dad.
JOHN: (Laughs) Thank you very much! I love you. The check is in the mail. In real life, I couldn’t be Colin’s dad. But we play younger in the TV show.

So for this role, you just embraced it right away and told them, “Yes, I’m on board. I want to do this.”
JOHN: They really didn’t have to convince me and I didn’t have to go away and think about it. I said, “Absolutely yes to it.” In fact, I was so committed to it that when I was in the U.K., I had to commute a couple times back and forth and I paid my own airfare. It’s the job and it’s work, and it’s the thing I want to do so I was happy to do that.

One of the worries that fans have right now is that the show may be setting up Malcolm to be a casualty in the big finale.
JOHN: You’ll just have to watch. I’m not giving anything away.

We’re kind of invested in Malcolm’s journey at this point. We would like to see him continue beyond this season and continue into the next season.
JOHN: (Laughs) If they’re invested in his journey, then god-damnit put it down in email and pencil and paper to the writer’s room and to the producers and tell them that they’re invested in it. I’m not going to give anything away, but just watch.

Can you tease what The Undertaking is?
JOHN: Oh, I don’t think so. The Undertaking will be fully explained in the next few episodes. I don’t want to give it away. I know everyone wants a spoiler and a teaser, but The Undertaking is a massive, colossal – I’m just going to say – destructive thing. That’s all I’m going to say. That’s as safe and as much as I can give away.

On another note, Alex Kingston just guest-starred on ARROW. Were you able to compare DOCTOR WHO notes at all?
JOHN: Actually, the first time Alex and I met each other was at Cameron Mackintosh’s house in London – the theater producer – he was celebrating his 25th anniversary to his partner and we were there and bumped into each other. We didn’t even say anything, we just looked at each other and went, “Aaaaaahhh! My god!” We got a glass of champagne and started talking about how it would be great if River and Jack – actually, she said River and Jack should have their own TV show. Then as we talked more, we realized that we’re both born on the same day. We’re both March 11th babies and we have so much in common. We like a lot of the same things and our attitude towards stuff is very, very similar. It struck a chord with us because that’s why River and Jack are very similar characters, in their attitude and their fun and their aggression, we are the same in real life – which is really ironic. So we struck it off. Then she came on ARROW, again we saw each other in the makeup trailer and just screamed. We both said, “Boy, there’s going to be some fan-gasms out there in a couple of weeks!” It was brilliant.

Do you mind commenting about the DOCTOR WHO 50th Anniversary Special? We now know that you’re not going to be a part of it, which is disappointing.
JOHN: That’s not my call. The thing I will say because people won’t keep asking: I wasn’t asked. That’s the fact. But I know people are starting to say that it’s because of my schedule that I wasn’t able to do it, but I absolutely would have fitted it in. The ARROW producers had said to me when I first accepted this role, they said, “If the 50th anniversary comes up and they want you to do it, then we’ll let you go to do it.” So it was already in the cards. I just wasn’t asked and again, for myself, John Barrowman is disappointed. But I totally understand. I remember Russell T Davis saying something to a fan once because the fan was saying, “You should bring back the Brigadier and you should bring back Leela and you should bring back all these different characters,” and Russell said, “No, it’s not appropriate sometimes. It’s not always about the uber-fan [and I’m paraphrasing what he said]; it’s about the viewer and the new audience who are watching. We have to introduce new characters and new people and do different things. It can’t always be the same.” So I get it. But that doesn’t mean to say that I’m not disappointed. I have tried to avoid stuff now ‘cause every day I get – and I understand why they are asking – but I keep saying to them, “You’re saying it to the wrong person. If you have a problem with it, write to the BBC. Write to the writers. Write to whoever it is that is in charge because it has nothing to do with me.”

Have you talked to Russell recently about doing another season of TORCHWOOD?
JOHN: To be honest with you, it’s not our call again. It’s whether the BBC will commission it. After it was done with BBC and Starz, whoever has the rights, we just have to wait and see. Russell said in an interview less than six months ago, he said TORCHWOOD is not dead. It could be done in 2 years, it would be done in 5 years, it could be done in a movie. So it could still have a life, but who knows when it will be done. But the thing is, I can’t sit around and wait. I’ve got to work. (Laughs)

Speaking of new projects, it was broke last week that you’re going to be making a guest-appearance on SCANDAL. What can you share about that?
JOHN: I can’t share anything. I’m completely even more sworn to secrecy about that. A lightning bolt from ABC Television will come down from the sky and strike me. The thing that I love about what I do is that everything is diverse and different. So this is again diverse and completely different.

When I was watching “Zero Dark Thirty” and you popped up on the screen, I nearly screamed in the theater.
JOHN: (Laughs) I didn’t tell anybody about that. A lot of what I had done ended up on the cutting room floor, and I knew that was going to happen. I had a couple of speeches before James Gandolfini started talking, so I knew it was going to get cut. But I’m still proud to have been a part of it and in a movie like that.

So what else are you working on?
JOHN: There’s a couple of things I can talk about. I’ve got to go back over to the U.K. in June to deal with my men’s skin care line. I have stuff to do with that, and we’re launching the women’s division of it. And my sister and I are currently working on the third book of “Hollow Earth” series. We’ve got a new publisher. We’ve commissioned four new books. The “Hollow Earth” series is being developed as a TV show and we’re working on that. My production company and another one are putting that up and getting that going.

Will the “Hollow Earth” TV series be for British or American television?
JOHN: We haven’t decided that yet. It’s whoever wants to buy it. But the books are being released in the States and I would love to see it done on something like ABC or Fox. In fact, the CW might be a good one for it. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Finally, you’re also appearing at Phoenix Comic-Con next month. Are you making plans to attend San Diego Comic-Con as well?
JOHN: I don’t know about San Diego. I’ve said that I’d like to go, but I haven’t been invited. I would like to go under the auspices of the ARROW folk, but I haven’t been asked yet. I’m a fan-boy myself. I love doing all the shopping and stuff and I also love the panels. I just adore it.

So if you want John at San Diego Comic-Con this year, be loud, be vocal and make sure to send a few tweets to @CW_Arrow @ARROWwriters @AJkreisberg @mguggenheim and @GBerlanti letting them know how much you want them to bring John to SDCC this year. Also be sure to tune in for the last 4 epic episodes of ARROW this season starting Wednesday, April 24th at 8PM on the CW (7PM on CTV in Canada). The Undertaking is coming!
