If the success of Nina Dobrev, Shenae Grimes and Landon Liboiron have taught us anything, it’s that not all DEGRASSI stars are created equal. Yet what is it about the iconic Canadian series that has allowed so many talented young actors to successfully transition to bigger and arguably better things? No one is more qualified to answer that question than executive producer Stefan Brogren, who since graduating himself from the original series in 1989 has spent the better part of 10 years shepherding the “Next Generation” to infinity and beyond courtesy of what he calls the best theater school money can’t buy.

“I think it has a lot to do with the show’s caring environment that allows young actors to flourish,” admitted Brogren when asked what it is about DEGRASSI that has turned it into such a powerful star-making vehicle. “Our kids are getting a lot of education while they’re behind these walls that allows them to experiment. That and, we’re always putting these characters through hell which means they have to grow and they never get soft about it. We don’t want to keep these kids on a certain plain and they’re always trying to take it to the next level.”

It’s precisely that aforementioned ‘next level’ that has caught the attention of an entertainment industry on both sides of the border since the hit Canadian export returned to the airwaves almost a decade ago to the day [Fun Fact: DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION premiered on CTV on October 14th, 2001]. Thanks in no small part to the likes of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Nina Dobrev, 90210′s Shenae Grimes, TERRA NOVA’s Landon Liboiron, not to mention slightly lesser known albeit equally talented actors such as Paula Brancati (BEING ERICA), Lauren Collins (SHARPAY’S FABULOUS ADVENTURE), Stacey Farber (18 TO LIFE) among others, it’s never been a better time to be a recent graduate of DEGRASSI. But just what does Brogren think about working on what many have characterized as Hollywood’s go-to farm system for up-and-coming young talent?

“If DEGRASSI is minor league, we’re a minor league that gets a lot of fans showing up at the game,” said Brogren. “I think a big part of our alumni’s success is that the show is not a star vehicle for one person, it really is a group activity in a lot of ways. We get them when they’re young where they have to learn to work with others. So if this place was an acting school, the one thing that they’re learning is to be giving to their other actors and I think that’s a big big thing that a lot of young actors miss is that there’s some give and take involved. They come out of here really well rounded people in a lot of ways and they’ve learned a lot of skills.”

One former student who graduated with top honors in acting [with a minor in representing Canada well] is Nina Dobrev, who parlayed three seasons on DEGRASSI into the starring role on a hit CW series that sees her deftly juggling romantic entanglements, bloody baddies and multiple personalities on a week-in-and-week-out basis.

“I remember when Nina came in and auditioned, I think half the thing we were looking for was someone who could play a gymnast or a cheerleader and she came in and started doing flips and stuff and that was how she actually won the role. At the time the role wasn’t big enough to define it as ‘Does she have to be a great actress?’,” recounted Brogren on humble beginnings of the artist formerly known as Mia Jones. “Nina came in really raw, I remember she had a couple of roles under her belt but she was a little ‘actor-y’ and within a year, even less, we saw ‘it.’ I think in the first couple of episodes even, Nina had a great work ethic and she just sort of blossomed.”

Which doesn’t always happen. For when it comes to DEGRASSI — a show that must constantly juggle story-lines for upwards of 10-15 series regulars per season — one doesn’t always get much of a second chance to make a first impression. And for every Dobrev, Grimes or Liboiron there are an equal number of students who for some reason or other failed to connect with an audience.

“We were really surprised [Where Nina was concerned] because it could have gone either way and sometimes it does. Nina was a beautiful girl back then but we see a lot of beautiful girls,” admitted Brogren. “Your story can disappear very quickly on this show if nothing’s happening with you and all we saw is we kept on wanting to work with her because she kept on wanting to work. She kept on pushing herself a little bit harder. ”

Co-star Cassie Steele, who will soon be returning to the small screen in the tentatively titled HIGHLAND GARDENS concurs, “You kind of already know where they’re going, it’s no big surprise that they’re where they are today, it’s what they set out to do. I feel like Nina, Shenae, Aubrey [Drake] were the most concentrated people and they just really went out to get it, we all saw it. Nina is just the hardest worker I have ever known, Shenae is really strong headed and will go after what she wants, and Aubrey has been making music since I met him 10 years ago. Their success is no fluke.”

Sums up Brogren in the parlance of the show that started it all, “They want those stories, as a character they want to get raped. That’s meat to an actor!”

If there is one lesson we’ve learned throughout our four seasons covering this industry we affectionally refer to as show, it’s that when it comes to changes both in front and behind the camera, the actor is always the last person to know.

Take Trevor Donovan for example. Since joining 90210 in its second season as what at the time was being billed as West Beverly’s own version of “JFK Jr,” the actor has had to deal with not just an unexpected change in his character’s sexuality, but his employment status as well. So just how does the affable actor feel about his short-lived journey coming to an end when the hit CW sudser returns for its upcoming fourth season this fall?

“I was disappointed at first but it’s understandable. The point of the storyline last year was to tell the tale of a kid coming out and coming to terms with who he was when he didn’t even realize it in the past himself and I really think that came to fruition at the end of last season,” said Trevor Donovan during a one-on-one with the TV Addict at the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles. “Beyond being a challenging character to play, it actually was a real story of substance that helped people, particularly young people come to terms with who they were and I just couldn’t be more proud.”

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Luckily for fans of what many have considered the only reason to tune into 90210 last season, there is a little bit more to the story. Which is to say, before Donovan moves onto bigger and better things (See: An upcoming role in Oliver Stone’s latest project “The Savages” in addition to a possible starring turn as Ken in the long-gestating Barbie film) Teddy will have to come out to his small screen family in what will surely result in one of the actor’s most emotionally charged, not to mention challenging scenes to date.

“I would assume [that Teddy coming out to his parents won't go well] because there always has to be conflict in a storyline.” said Donovan. “They like to keep us in the dark a little bit. I think the writers like to surprise us as much as they surprise the viewer so we don’t exactly anticipate anything, which is cool.”

Also cool, the fact that Donovan — despite being somewhat in the dark himself as to how his character will end his short-lived journey — was kind enough to take the time to put on his writer’s cap and speculate at to just how he’d like to see Teddy’s journey come to a close.

“Having left such a great impression at the end of last season, I’d like Teddy to stay in that vein and leave with a positive message, because that’s what this whole storyline has been about,” revealed Donovan. “Twitter, Facebook, all the fan reaction is so immediate and I’ve been very active in reading those message everyday. Playing Teddy and helping people who are struggling with issues of their own has been nothing but a positive experience.”

From its hastily constructed beginnings as a no-brainer way in which to build buzz for the fledgling upstart CW network, generating headlines has never been a problem for 90210. Thus, it’s only fitting — as we countdown towards the much-anticipated fourth season premiere — that star Michael Steger (Navid Shirazi) continues in the show’s illustrious tradition by making a few of his very own. Namely, that this upcoming fourth season may mark the beginning of the end.

“I keep saying five years,” said Steger when asked during a recent one-on-one interview with the TV Addict as to just how long he sees the series lasting for. “But you know, that always changes, the CW likes to hold onto its shows.”

Suffice it to say, that’s not the only thing the CW likes to do when it comes to 90210. Enter the show’s third change at the top in four seasons, with Patti Carr and Lara Olsen succeeding Rebecca Sinclair as new showrunners. Which naturally raises the slightly awkward albeit painfully obvious question: Just how will the showrunner switcheroo affect 90210 following what many have referred to as its strongest season to date?

“Well, between the first and second seasons it was pretty chaotic for us because we were so attached to [former showrunners] Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. They were the ones who cast us and we felt really emotionally connected to them, so season 2 was a really hard shift with a lot of changes and it took us a while to get used to the new leadership,” admitted Steger. “But now with Patti Carr and Lara Olsen it seems like more of a seamless transition, they seem to be fans of the show and they really want to keep things going the way they were.”

Of course, despite what Steger characterized as a “the least stressful of all the transitions,” it’s a transition all the same. What’s more, with the gang making the often perilous leap from high school to college this season (See: DAWSON’S CREEK circa 2001) it may in fact result in the show’s trickiest transition to date.

“I think they’re handling it wonderfully because there is so much more room for stories outside of the world of High School where you can go in so many different directions. Some of the kids are going to college, some not, opting out because they want to run their own business, so it’s interesting because there’s a lot more freedom,” said Steger, citing his character Navid as a prime example. “He’s left to take care of his sister who doesn’t get on the plane to Switzerland and he has to beg Silver to see if she can live with them. Navid moves in with Silver and so there’s this very interesting relationship where Navid and Silver are forced to be adults, very similar to parental units, yet they’re nowhere near the maturity level to take care of a 17 year old kid.”

Further complicating matters is the unexpected arrival of Navid’s Uncle, who, not surprisingly is none too pleased with his nephew for destroying his father’s porn business and the lavish lifestyle it afforded them, as well as Adrianna, who, in typical Adrianna fashion will do a horrible job of attempting to mend fences following last season’s slew of betrayals. Revealed Steger, “There’s a really awkward scene between Navid and Ade in the first couple of episodes that sets the tone for how Adrianna is going to be treated. I think she’s really really trying hard to redeem herself, but it’s not going to be very easy. A lot of people want to have nothing to do with her and she’s going to be having a hard time winning back any sign of friendship.”

In other words, complete with the requisite amount of family drama and over-the-top confrontations, it’s just another year in America’s most infamous zip code. A year that Steger — who understands full well how fortunate he is to have the rare gift that is a steady gig on a hit television series — is happy to show up for as long as the CW cares to have him.

“You know what, as an actor there’s always the need to play different roles but I’m so grateful to have this job. I know how hard it is to get a job in Hollywood especially and I love working with the cast,” said Steger when asked if he’s still excited to wake up and go to work after four plus seasons of playing the same character. “I realize it’s going to be a great platform to get other jobs, you know, when the show’s over because let’s face it, it’s going to end soon, or one of these days and I’d love to do other films and hopefully the show will allow me to do that.”

With shooting having already begun on BONES seventh season, I’m wondering if you’ve been able to cobble together anymore information about the impact of Emily Deschanel’s pregnancy on the show? — Jennifer
The TV Addict: This just in: The somewhat reduced workload for mommy-to-be-Brennan (Deschanel) will be sweet news for one John Francis Daley. Which is to say fans can expect an uptick in screen time for Dr. Lance Sweets who will accompany Booth on more investigations in the early part of the seventh season. So much so that he’ll actually get certified to carry a gun! Now whether Sweets should be packing heat all day… well, that is an entirely different story.

Got any SHAMELESS scoop to tide this fan over until season 2? — Jenn
The TV Addict: When SHAMELESS does return this January 2012, Frank will very quickly discover that allowing himself to get urinated on by son as penance for sleeping with Lip’s underage girlfriend Karen was a walk in the park in comparison to what happens when the cops start sniffing around the mysterious disappearance of Karen’s father Eddie.

Any idea as to who will replace Michael Scott on THE OFFICE now that it has been made clear that James Spader’s character is coming on board as more of a CEO type to fill the void left by Kathy Bates? — Michelle
The TV Addict: If you seriously think NBC is going to let that doozy of a secret out, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn I’m willing to sell you. That said, what we do know — thanks to some time spent with Craig Robinson at this week’s NBC TCA party in Los Angeles — that Spader’s character’s management style will be far different than Michael Scott’s obsession with being loved. Said Robinson, “[James Spader's management style] is one of inspiration, trying to get inside your mind and inspire.”

Is it safe to say following last week’s big reveal on FALLING SKIES fans will get a closer glimpse at the new aliens? — Larry
The TV Addict: It’s not just safe to assume, we can pretty much guarantee that the insides of a gigantic mothership will play a pivotal role in what we’re hoping is an epic ending to FALLING SKIES’ first season on Sunday.

Any word on how 90210 plans to write out Teddy? — Brandon
The TV Addict: Do the phrase “ripped-from-the-headlines” mean anything to you? Because that’s precisely the focus of Teddy’s journey as he prepares to exit America’s most infamous zip code. According to sources, Teddy will be thrown into the middle of an incredibly awkward situation when his latest boyfriend not just happens to be a man who has taken a year off of school to volunteer to fight for marriage equality, but is fighting against Teddy’s ultra-conservative politician uncle who is the only member of his family to support him after he came out to his father to shall we say less than positive results.

Will Lauren Graham’s Sarah ever find love on PARENTHOOD? — Amy
The TV Addict: Lauren Graham sure as heck hopes so. “Sarah is finally being open enough to have a relationship even though some of the circumstances aren’t perfect,” explained Graham to your very own TV Addict during a recent one-on-one at NBC’s 2011 TCA party. “Even though he’s [Jason Ritter’s character[ 10 years younger than her, I’ve been dying to explore this in a non-comedic real way. What is that difference between people and is it enough to ruin something or it is surmountable — especially when the woman’s older — so I think it could be really cool.”

Any intel on what Nikita is up to? — Nick
The TV Addict: All intel points to NIKITA risking her life, and while that probably won’t come as much of a surprise to fans of the show, what surely will is which former friend and Division agent, she is risking her life for.

Any word on how the newest addition to BONES (Read: Brennan’s baby bump!) will effect BONES this season? — Raquel
The TV Addict: Since Hart Hanson and Co. are being understandably tight-lipped with regards to how Brennan’s baby will affect BONES this season, we hope some details on a new arrival of a different variety will suffice. According to sources, replacing the dearly departed Mr. Nigel-Murray this season will be Finn Abernathy, an 18 year old not-so-Southern gentleman. Why not so Southern you ask? Well, put it this way, he managed to get his undergraduate degree while being confined to a juvenile detention facility.

Your recent visit to the set of DEGRASSI did not result in the bounty of scoop I was hoping for. Are you holding back on us? — Allie
The TV Addict: Boy are we ever! And as much as we would love to share the major, some might say life-altering event that we were lucky enough to witness, this week’s visit to the set of DEGRASSI came with some serious strings attached. Namely, we aren’t allowed to share details about the special set that was constructed, or the clothes that were being tried on during the scene we watched. But rest assured, when you do finally get to see what transpired in early 2012, it will be worth the wait.

I really enjoyed the interview with Justin Kelly the newest addition toDEGRASSI, but curious if you got to chat with any other cast members? — Madison
The TV Addict: Indeed we did. Stay tuned next week for two candid interviews with Ainslinn Paul (Clare) and Melinda Shankar (Allie), both of whom who had some very surprising things to say about their character’s relationship statuses this season.

Silas’ stint as a nearly nude model on last weeks episode of WEEDS may have been the best thing to happen to my television since TRUE BLOOD’s clothing budget got cut in half! Please tell me his modelling career continue. — Taylor
The TV Addict: Unfortunately, Silas’ attempt to become America’s Next Top Model (Side Bar: After umpteen cycles is anyone else curious as to why AMERICA’s NEXT TOP MODEL hasn’t attempted an all-male season?) will take a brief hiatus when he accompanies Nancy to California where she’ll confront Jill in the battle for custody of baby Stevie. But, on a more positive note, a major series regular from the show’s first two seasons (Aka. WEEDS: The Glory Years) will make a shocking, not to mention very welcome return by episodes end.

Love me some FALLING SKIES but somewhat worried about the fate of those poor kids having left the safety of the “Second Massachusetts.” Any chance you can assure me they’ll be okay? — Linda
The TV Addict: We could, but what fun would that be! So rather than simply spoil what happens on Sunday during what is arguably the show’s most exciting episode to date, we’ll simply say that the safety of the “Second Massachusetts” young’ins will come at a cost that may-or-may-not involve the death of a character we’ve known since episode 1.

With ENTOURAGE kicking off its final season this Sunday is there any hope at all for a happily-ever-after for Eric and Sloane? — Lindsay
The TV Addict: While the first few episodes of ENTOURAGES eighth and final season won’t give Eric and Sloane shippers a reason to pop the champagne just yet, news that Melinda Clarke shared with us during this past weekends Polaris Event in Toronto certainly should. According to Clarke, the hilariously heightened version of herself that she plays on the hit HBO show will be returning for a three episode arc at the end of the series and while we have no idea as to why, we suspect that noise you’re hearing in the not-to-distant-future is… wedding bells.

Please tell me that the new 90210 showrunners aren’t ruining Naomi — the only reason I still watch the show — by keeping her pregnant this year? — Gary

As a 90210 fan who is still reeling from Naomi’s unexpected pregnancy reveal at the end of last season, I’m curious if you have any ideas as to just how the show plans on dealing with it come season 4? — Allie
The TV Addict: Assuming of course new showrunners Patti Carr and Lara Olsen bother to stick with last season’s somewhat out of left field baby bump bombshell, we can assure you that the pregnancy will have very little effect on Naomi. At least if the first two episodes of the season are any indication, which according to reports will not just see Naomi continue to be the life of the party, but do so in a manner that will catch the attention of both the authorities and the Dean of California University. Ouch!

Season 7 of SUPERNATURAL cannot come soon enough! Any scoop? — Noam
The TV Addict: Entitled “The Girl Next Door,” SUPERNATURAL’s much anticipated seventh season will kick off by not just introducing fans to an old flame friend of Sam’s, but will flashback to Sam and Dean’s teenage years where we’ll meet, as the episode’s title suggests, the girl next door… a beautiful girl who in typical SUPERNATURAL fashion harbours a terrible, emphasis on the terrible, secret.

When we last left WAREHOUSE 13, Myka had left the Warehouse. Will she be back and how soon? — Ricky
The TV Addict: In the wacky mixed-up files of the WAREHOUSE 13 world, the dilemma over how to lure Myka back will be a rocky, but short road. More interesting still, it will take not a friend or a lover to lure Myka back, but a deadly foe. 

Sunday’s season premiere of TRUE BLOOD had far too little Joe Manganiello for my liking. Any intel on when we can expect Alcide to return? — Bittany
The TV Addict: Alcide fans will be thrilled to learn that Joe Manganiello will — at the behest of Sookie — return in a big way in TRUE BLOOD’s third episode of the season. Alcide fans will be somewhat less than thrilled to learn that when Alcide returns to Bon Temps, he will not be doing so alone.

Any hints as to who the hot new love-interest for Captain Jack in TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY? — Catherine
The TV Addict: Yes, and he is quite the eye-candy. However, it is not about who Jack ends up in bed with, but rather who Jack calls from his lover’s bed that may hold the key to Jack’s heart. But to see that scene, you’ll have to wait for Episode 3, entitled “Dead of Night” — and more than one couple ends up in the sheets that night!

What should we look out for as the 4th season of EUREKA resumes on July 11th? — Jeremy
The TV Addict: Look for a trip to outer-space, someone to get cold feet, and musical mood swings that drive everyone to do crazy things.  Mostly, keep an eye on Felicia Day who joins the show for an extended arc as the scintillating Dr. Holly Marten.

Any chance you could shed some light on a PRETTY LITTLE LIARS rumor going around that will see another woman come in between Ezra and Aria in an upcoming episode — Lisa
The TV Addict: As much as we’d like to confirm or deny the report that another girl will very soon come in between Ezra and Aria we have a feeling you’d much prefer to hear from Ezra’s portrayer Ian Harding who had this to say when posed that very question, “Well, yes [another girl will soon have an impact on Ezra and Aria's relationship]. But that’s all I’m going to say because I think where the writers are going with this one story line is really, really interesting. So I think that we’re starting to shoot—well, actually no, I won’t say any more. I’ll just say yes and be really vague.”

Will HAVEN answer the question of who is the real Agent Audrey Parker, or will it be drug out through the second season? — Dylan
The TV Addict: The answer to that gigantic reveal from the first season will be answered within the first new episode when the show returns on July 15th.  You will not want to miss a second of that episode to see how that doppelganger situation resolves itself. 

Any word on how NIKITA plans to start its second season? — Amy
The TV Addict: Remember that quasi-romantic final shot from NIKITA’s first season finale that saw Nikita and Michael peacefully drive off into the sunset mere moments after pledging to work together to bring Percy and Division down once and for all? Well, enjoy that while you can for when NIKITA returns for its second season, their first roadblock will be a doozy. Or to be more specific, a twenty-something love interest for Alex military man who has been tasked by Oversight to help Division now fronted by Amanda track down Nikita and those pesky black boxes.

The TV Addict: Simply put, much like her stunning dress, Graham was holding her cards a little too close to the vest when it came to sharing season three spoilers. Well, except to reveal that there is one thing we’re fairly certain she won’t be worrying about when it comes to what’s in store for Bonnie during the third season of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. That thing of course being: Death! “Technically, I already died in the second season finale, so I’m not too worried,” joked Graham when asked if she was at all concerned with Jeremy’s history of dearly-departed girlfriends. “Plus, it certainly helps that the characters have such a huge fan base rooting for them.”

Any word on what creator Marc Cherry has up his sleeve for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES traditional season long mystery this fall? — Zoe
The TV Addict: Not so much of a word, as an inkling that said mystery might have a little something to do with the newest arrival on the lane. According to sources, Producers have quietly been on the look out for a love interest for Vanessa Williams’ Renee, who moves into town along with his out-of-control teenaged daughter to escape his crazy ex-wife who not surprisingly enough may not be too far behind.

The TV Addict: Although there’s plenty to love about Sunday’s season premiere, Stephen Moyer fans in particular will get a real kick out of the season’s second episode which flashes back all the way to London’s punk scene circa 1982 to reveal a very cool bit of backstory about Bill Compton that sheds some much needed light on the current predicament he finds himself in. Oh, and if your tastes run more towards younger, blonder Ryan Kwanten variety, you’ll be happy to know that poor Jason Stackhouse will spend the entire episode tied to a bed for reasons we’re really not about to get into here.

Any word on what’s in store for 90210 now that the much-beleaguered has two new showrunners at the helm? — April
The TV Addict: Family drama, and lots of it when Navid will not only be forced to deal with his annoying high school-aged sister (Think: Kardashian!) but will continue to deal with the fallout from his father’s exile courtesy of the arrival of an Uncle who is somewhat less than pleased with Navid’s role in destroying his family’s multi-million dollar adult video business, not to mention the lifestyle that came with it.

Anything positive to report on the Annie and Liam front? — Jenn
The TV Addict: Keeping in mind first and foremost not to shoot the messenger, we have absolutely nothing positive to report on the Annie and Liam front. Seriously. Things could not be worse for 90210′s most adorable couple who by all accounts will start off the season further apart than ever thanks in no small part to a mysterious young woman who followed Liam back from his summer job working on a fishing boat in Alaska, and an equally mysterious upper classmen at California University who may-or-may-not have befriended Annie for all the wrong reasons.

Is Nancy’s lesbian affair serious, or just another desperate ratings ploy on behalf of Showtime to promote WEEDS? — Brenda
The TV Addict: If you my friend are actually going as far as to accuse a Network of using a gay/lesbian storyline in a half-hearted attempt to boost ratings ploy, we have nothing more to say to you then…. has anyone told you that you may have what it takes to be a Network Executive?! Of course on a more serious note, while Nancy’s jailhouse tryst is being somewhat blown out of proportion by Showtime’s salivating PR team, it’s only fair to mention that her Russian cell mate Zoya (Olga Sosnovska) may in fact hold the key to a fresh start when Nancy is inevitably released from prison. Literally.

With rumors running rampant with regards to several romantic interests in Annie Walker’s life as the second season of COVERT AFFAIRS unfolds, I would love some intel on which suitor she’ll choose. — David
The TV Addict: With as many as four men ensnared by the luminous CIA beauty, ranging from the mysterious Ben Mercer to the dashing Auggie to the bad boy Jai Wilcox and to suave Mossad agent Eyal Lavin, Annie Walker’s dance card is very full and it is enough to keep a girl dancing all season long.  But one thing is for certain, one of these contenders for her heart will be given a gentle kiss goodbye as Annie leaves him standing alone on the tarmac.

Loved Loved Loved Sunday’s two-hour premiere of FALLING SKIES. So much so that I have to ask, is Tom going to successfully be able to rescue his son Ben? — Allison
The TV Addict: Although it should probably come as no surprise that Tom’s operation to rescue son Ben will not be an easy one, what certainly might come as a surprise is the price at least one member of Tom’s team will pay in saving Ben’s life. What’s more, saving (or not saving) Ben’s life may just be the start of a far more insidious problem.
