<font color=#ff6600">The Good: If you really have to ask what we’re going to kick off our “good” with when it comes to last night’s 63rd Annual EMMY Awards you clearly have yet to jump on the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS bandwagon. So, before we continue we’re going to need you to immediately put a stop to whatever you’re doing and watch all five seasons of the now award-winning NBC/DirecTV drama so that you may properly appreciate the awesomeness of what we’re about to say. Living up to their “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose” mantra was the heart and soul of Texas, nominees Kyle Chandler and creator Jason Katims, both of whom walked away with much-deserved statues for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama and Outstanding Writing respectively. Continuing along the lines of deserving, albeit unexpected winners was Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama winner Margo Martindale for her fantastically received work on JUSTIFIED and the somewhat less surprising, albeit equally welcoming wins for MODERN FAMILY’s Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy duo that was the husband and wife team of Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy) and Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy). That latter of whom gave what turned out to be one of the evening’s most moving acceptances speeches that saw him imaginging what his dearly departed Dad might have thought about him making a living by playing dress up and wearing makeup!

Also falling under the category of “good” was the hilarious beauty-pageant-esque manner that brought all six Outstanding Actress in a Comedy nominees on stage (Women of Comedy FTW!), the highly entertaining spoof featuring the newest arrivals to THE OFFICE (Including MAD MEN’s John Slattery, PARKS AND RECREATION’s Aziz Ansari and TWO AND A HALF MEN’s Ashton Kutcher) and if you’ll forgive us for dwelling on MODERN FAMILY again, co-creator Steve Levitan. Who not only took it upon himself to publicly embarrass his wife by revealing the inspiration for his Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Winning episode that saw his real-life kids walk in on him and his wife doing you know what, but for turning his Outstanding Comedy Series acceptance speech into a shout out to the show’s younger cast members who will probably never get the award recognition they so rightfully deserve. Said Levitan, “I especially want to point out all of the kids on the cast, MODERN FAMILY was this close to being animated. That’s how much we didn’t want to work with kids.”

<font color=#ff6600">The Bad: From Jane Lynch’s underwhelming opening number (Not-So-Fun-Fact: Leonard Nimoy was a last minute replacement for Alec Baldwin who dropped out do due a censorship issue with Fox over a hacking scandal joke) to comedic bits that fell either fell flast (JERSEY Snoore!) or for some reason or other seemed to focus on the fact that she’s gay (Note to Hollywood: You’re here, you’re queer, we’re really okay with it!) Jane Lynch’s tour of [EMMY Hosting] duty did little but reconfirm what two seasons of GLEE has already illustrated, she is most effective in small doses.

On the hardware front, while it’s hard to argue with the likes of MAD MEN, THE AMAZING RACE and MODERN FAMILY walking away with golden-statues for their four, ninth and second consecutive wins respectively, it really would be nice if the Academy of Television Arts & Science spread the love around a wee bit (Paging PARKS AND RECREATION line one). But since that is pretty much out of our control, we’ll simply end this section of our EMMY rant by asking if MIKE & MOLLY’s Melissa McCarthy would have really won had she not made us fall out of our seat laughing for her role in this summer’s surprise smash that was Bridesmaids? Probably not.

<font color=#ff6600">The Ugly: As much as Hollywood loves a good comeback story, Charlie Sheen’s completely insincere image rehabilitation tour should in no way have been given center stage during last night’s celebration of television’s best and brightest. Suffice it to say, six months after the half-man-full-warlock almost cost hundreds of hard-working people both in front and behind the camera of TWO AND A HALF MEN their jobs and livelihood is far too brief a time to simply forgive and forget. And while we’re on the subject on things we wish we could forget, we believe comedian Sarah Silverman said it best when she tweeted, “Whoever’s writing the voice over guy’s banter should not do that anymore”

NOMINEES: BOARDWALK EMPIRE, DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, GAME OF THRONES, THE GOOD WIFE, MAD MEN

SHOULD WIN: THE GOOD WIFE
Since we have a feeling that in the case of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, it really was just an honor to be nominated, we’d like to think that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences might take at least one opportunity to celebrate a big-old-fashioned breakout hit on broadcast television.

WILL WIN: BOARDWALK EMPIRE
Despite the fact that MAD MEN has walked away a winner from this category for the past three years, one has a sneaking suspicion that angry voters might look to reward the equally outstanding BOARDWALK EMPIRE as penance for creator Matthew Weiner’s very public, not to mention, incredibly lucrative contract negotiation that took place earlier in the year.

NOMINEES: THE BIG BANG THEORY, GLEE, MODERN FAMILY, THE OFFICE, PARKS AND RECREATION, 30 ROCK

SHOULD WIN: PARKS AND RECREATION
Unlike a certain Country’s current crop of political operatives, this look at the inner workings of a government body — thanks in no small part to award-worthy performances from an all-star ensemble — is intentionally funny.

WILL WIN: MODERN FAMILY
With its uniformly loveable cast and writing that consistently knocks it out of the park, MODERN FAMILY — like many of our past TV favorites — more than demonstrated over course of its sophomore season that it has all the trappings of an Emmy-worthy comedy. What’s more, unlike many of our past TV favorites (including ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, GROSSE POINTE and/or BETTER OFF TED, among others) people actually watch this one!

SNUBBED: EPISODES
Suffice it to say, the only unfunny thing about Matt LeBlanc’s hilarious and somewhat scathing look at the ugly truth behind how the dream factory that is Hollywood was that its first season that ended almost a year ago was an all-too-brief seven episodes.

*theTVaddict.com does not guarantee his “winning picks.” Do not, I repeat, Do not bet the house, kids or family pet on them!

SHOULD WIN: Louie C.K., LOUIE
Mining his own life for laughs, being a divorced forty-something never seemed so funny.

WILL WIN: Steve Carell, THE OFFICE
While not exactly laugh-out-loud funny, Carell’s swan song on THE OFFICE was more than memorable enough to ensure his seven seasons spent at Dunder Mifflin culminates with a golden parachute of the heavy statue variety.

SNUBBED: Joel McHale, COMMUNITY
Dear Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Don’t let the pleasing facade fool you. Under Joel McHale’s perfectly coifed hair and ridiculously toned body is one helluva funny actor. Signed, Dean Pelton.

SHOULD WIN: Martha Plimpton, RAISING HOPE
Despite our absolute infatuation with Amy Poehler’s plucky PARKS AND RECREATION portrayal, when it comes to the battle between criminally-under-appreciated-ratings-anemic laughers, Martha Plimpton’s desperately-in-need-of-a-break Virginia Hope wins by a hair. Specially, the always hilarious follicles of co-star Cloris Leachman

WILL WIN: Laura Linney, THE BIG C
Also known as the one and only positive to come out of the overall awfulness that is Cancer: Awards bait.

SNUBBED: Courteney Cox, COUGAR TOWN
Despite being there for us every single Wednesday night at 9:30PM with a consistent willingness to do anything for a laugh, Academy voters have yet to be there for Cox. Who inexplicably enough, remains to this day the only one of the FRIENDS not to garner an Emmy nod.

In anticipation of the upcoming 63rd Annual EMMY Awards (Airing Sunday September 18th at 8PM on FOX, CTV in Canada) theTVaddict.com is proud [or not-so-proud depending on how things turn out] to once again present our GUARANTEED EMMY WINNERS 2011*

NOMINEES: Steve Buscemi (BOARDWALK EMPIRE), Kyle Chandler (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS), Michael C. Hall (DEXTER), Jon Hamm (MAD MEN), Hugh Laurie (HOUSE), Timothy Olyphant (JUSTIFIED)

SHOULD WIN: Kyle Chandler, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
If four years of egregious Emmy snubs have proven anything, it’s that football is clearly not members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences game. Which is why, in an effort to ensure members don’t fumble this last opportunity to recognize Kyle Chandler for five seasons of excellence, we thought it best to put it in terms the voting body (Read: Predominantly over-privileged middle-aged white men) might better understand: Kyle Chandler is to acting as to a pre-scandal Tiger Woods was to Golf. Got that?

WILL WIN: Jon Hamm, MAD MEN
Not only has Hamm inexplicably yet to win an Emmy for his complex and layered portrayal of Don Draper, anyone who has seen the insta-classic that was “The Suitcase” will tell you, it pretty much had “For Your Consideration” written all over it.

SNUBBED: John Noble, FRINGE
Seriously Emmy Voters, just how many characters does this man have to play before you start recognizing his genius?

SHOULD WIN: Connie Britton, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Epic isn’t just the name of one of the many troubled teens Tami Taylor deftly helped get back on the right track throughout the fifth and final season of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, it also just so happens to be the perfect descriptor of Connie Britton’s performance as she beautifully balances her duties as wife, mother and the world’s greatest guidance counsellor. We’re just sayin’

WILL WIN: Julianna Margulies, THE GOOD WIFE
In an Award Show overflowing with praise for Cable aces, look to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to reserve one of its highest profile pieces of hardware for Network royalty Julianna Marguilies. Good wife, great show.

SNUBBED: The Stars of Television!
Quick, what do the likes of FRINGE’s Anna Torv, BONES’ Emily Deschanel and CASTLE’s Stana Katic have in common? Well, aside from having that whole stunningly beautiful thing down pat, each of these lovely leading ladies’ poignant performances continue to be overlooked based entirely on the procedural-esque (or in the case of FRINGE, science fiction based) nature of their shows.
