While they may not have been the year’s most critically acclaimed or the country’s most popular, each the following shows made this TV Addict’s Top 10 of ’11 for the simple reason that each week, they left us jonesing another fix. You know those people who say “less is more?” Yeah, they’re totally wrong. As the following programs prove, too much is never enough.

THE GOOD WIFE (CBS)
Since previous “Best Ofs” have already seen us shine the spotlight on the crackling chemistry that comes hand-in-hand with THE GOOD WIFE’s all-star ensemble and roster of guest stars that reads like a “Who’s Who” of Broadway, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight something slightly less sexy about the show that good doesn’t even begin to describe. Once thought of as the show’s achilles heel, this year saw the legal drama raise the bar on the courtroom aspect of the series thanks to sharply written and thought provoking case-of-the-weeks whose interest — unlike many shows of the same ilk — often rival that of the relationship melodrama outside of the courtroom.

GAME OF THRONES (HBO)
Complete with epic battles, copious amounts of sex and violence, and a level of storytelling so ambitious it’s almost more befitting the big screen than that of the small, HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin epic fantasy series GAME OF THRONES didn’t just live up to the hype, it surpassed it. And in doing so reaffirmed HBO’s long-dormant mantra, “It’s not TV, it’s HBO.” Indeed.

PARKS AND RECREATION (NBC)
As if season after season of consistently delivering laughs thanks to an all-star ensemble and all-too-frequent phenomenal guest cast isn’t reason enough to extol the virtues of one of the best comedies you’re not watching, this season of PARKS AND RECREATION solidified its spot amongst our all-time favorites (see: FRIENDS, FRASIER) thanks to three important factors: 1) More romance (Amy Poehler and Adam Scott give adorkable NEW GIRL Zooey Deschanel a run for her money). 2) More Aziz Ansari (RIP Entertainment 7Twenty). And 3) Even more heart, culminating in the recent midseason finale that had Leslie’s entire staff pledging their allegiance to her campaign in an emotionally poignant moment reminiscent of THE WEST WING’s “I serve at the pleasure of the President.”

PARENTHOOD (NBC)
For every Showrunner and Network Executive that spent the better part of the last year losing sleep over the idea that the coming together of two popular television characters means the death of drama (Yes, we’re talking to you, fine folks involved with BONES and CASTLE), we respectively present our rebuttal in the form of the entire extended Braverman family. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll surely join us in scratching your head over why more people aren’t watching the remarkably acted and beautifully written family drama that is NBC’s PARENTHOOD.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (NBC)
After almost five seasons of near flawlessness, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ran out the clock with a win so big we’re still reeling from the emotional satisfaction that came from a beautiful football-free final montage befitting a series that was about so much more than what happened on any given Sunday. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

HOMELAND (Showtime)
If Showtime’s spy-tastic new thriller HOMELAND proved anything, well aside from the undeniable awesomeness of stars Claire Danes and Damien Lewis, it’s that less is indeed more. Not saddled with the Kiefer Sutherland thriller’s twenty-four episode per season time constraint that generally amounted to an explosive start and finish to every season marred by an extraneous middle padded with silly story lines (Think: Elisha Cuthbert and a cougar trap!), HOMELAND’s 13 episode cable-sized season was just right. And by “just right’ we of course mean jam-packed with a seemingly never-ending number of twists and turns that had us questioning motives of an ever-expanding roster of morally dubious characters up until the very moment the final episode’s credits rolled.

HAPPY ENDINGS (ABC)
Since we’ve already gone on record in heralding HAPPY ENDINGS as quite possibly the funniest series since that show about that coffee addicted gang from Central Perk, we’ll simply say this: The only thing that makes us happier than getting to revel in the misadventures of Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally, Damon Wayans Jr and Casey Wilson on a week-in-and-week-out-basis is the idea that— thanks to a surprising second season uptick in ratings — we’ll be getting to do so for many seasons to come.

PERSON OF INTEREST (CBS)
What PERSON OF INTEREST may lack in verbiage from its somewhat emotionless leading former military man that is Jim Caviezel’s mysterious John Reese, it more than makes up for thanks to showrunner Jonathan Nolan. The immensely talented storyteller (See writing credits that include: The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Memento), who in teaming up Reese with the equally mysterious multimillionaire Harold Finch (LOST’s Michael Emerson) and Cops Carter (Tarjai P. Henson) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) has quietly created the superhero television series television genre fans so richly deserve.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS)
Despite the fact that we continue to be vocal about the decisive lack of movement on the mother of all mysteries, we feel that it’s important to note when it comes to HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER that we chastise because we love. Oh, and did we mention we’re not alone? Almost unheard of in this modern 500 channel universe, our infatuation with this hilarious and heartwarming series continues to grow along with… drumroll please… the show’s audience! In other-words, co–creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas must be doing something right.

DOWNTON ABBEY (PBS)
Move over MELROSE PLACE, television scandal has a new address! The place: Victorian England. The Time: Early 20th Century. The Hook: Having recently devoured the entire first season courtesy of Netflix, we find ourselves completely enthralled in the sordid sex-filled scandal-ridden lives of the Crawley family and the staff that serves them. Seriously. You have not lived until you’ve witnesses a dressing down by family matriarch Violet (Dame Maggie Smith).

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
REVENGE (ABC): Aaron Spelling would be proud.
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM (HBO): Did you see “Palestinian Chicken”?
BONES (FOX): For giving the middle-finger to the MOONLIGHTING Curse!
HART OF DIXIE (CW): Possibly the most delightful small town since Stars Hollow.
RAISING HOPE (FOX): Living under the poverty line hasn’t been this funny since ROSEANNE.
SHAMELESS (Showtime): Thanks to the funniest collection of kids since MODERN FAMILY. Speaking of which…
MODERN FAMILY (ABC): Still undeniably the most consistently funny performer on television.
THE DAILY SHOW/COLBERT REPORT (Comedy): Also known as the silver-lining to the out-and-out insanity that the American political system.
COMMUNITY (NBC): To borrow a line from the dearly departed Steve Jobs, “Here’s to the crazy ones.”
THE MIDDLE (ABC): Now that the entirety of the critic community has jumped on the Heck bandwagon, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind you all that we were there first!
Animation Domination (FOX): This season’s trifecta of Seth MacFarlane shows (FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, CLEVELAND SHOW) and THE SIMPSONS have been so enjoyable we’re willing to forgive Fox for ALLEN GREGORY.

Don’t hate Scott Porter because he’s beautiful, hate him because his “job” involves pretending to be in love with both Rachel Bilson and Jaime King on the hit new CW series HART OF DIXIE. As George Tucker, the man caught between his feelings for his life-long friend and fiancée Lemon Breeland (King) and the adorable and alluring newcomer that is Dr. Zoe Hart (Bilson), Porter has his hands full. Or at least that was our takeaway from our recent one-on-one with the former FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS star who was kind enough to take a few minutes to chat up what life is like in the fictional, fantastical and awfully flirty town of Bluebell Alabama.

Aside from the adorable Rachel Bilson, what was it that initially attracted you to HART OF DIXIE?
Scott Porter: I came from the world of musical theater and comedies and in Hollywood it’s so easy to be pigeonholed. Not that being pigeonholed into a dramatic situation after FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is a bad thing — because it’s not and I’ll be forever grateful for FNL for opening so many doors for me — but I wanted to show that lighter side of me and what better way to do it than a show with Jaime King, Rachel Bilson and being a romantic lead in basically a television version of a romantic comedy. I think television needs this. I think there’s a void open for an hour long show that is funny, quirky, and great. PUSHING DAISIES was probably the last show that really filled that void, something that was its own little world, its own town and filled with heart and beauty. It was a gorgeous show and I say if we can get anything close to that we’d be completely thrilled.

What have you enjoyed the most about playing George thus far?
It’s funny in watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS a lot of people would see the relationship between Jason Street and Herc, there was a lot of funny in that. But then it would always come back to the seriousness of the situation. With HART OF DIXIE, I get to show that funny, I get to be valiant and be the hero in a very different way. I couldn’t be more blessed.

How long do you think it will take for real cracks to appear in George and Lemon’s (Jaime King) not-so-fairytale romance?
They are like Bluebell royalty and you’ll come to find out down the road that there’s a bit of a relationship between their parents and there is a kind of a class lineage in the town. The town expects them to be together, they were destined to be together and we’ll see how that kind of eats away at them and how they deal with the speed bumps that are inevitably coming. Will love that has lasted through childhood, high school and college really conquer the adult problems that are out there? There’s something so magical about having a love that matures with the people that are involved in it, but the curiosity of Zoe (Rachel Bilson) and George is equally as intriguing. Honestly, I love working with both actresses equally as much, so I just want to keep doing this little dance, this three way tango as long as I can.

Have the producers found away to incorporate your real-life musical abilities into the show?
We might see George sing a little tune, but I don’t know if we’ll do a full-on musical episode… maybe season 5! That said, George has got some really great secrets and I can’t wait to kind of unveil them. Perhaps his aspirations for Broadway is what took him to New York instead of law. I don’t know, but we’ll see.

And finally, since no interview would be complete without adding fuel to the fire that is the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS big screen rumors, what have you heard?
Connie britton and I were shooting a movie together last week (Editor’s Note: This interview took place during the first week of August) and the day that the news broke she said in her very polite singsongy voice, “Scott have you heard about this movie?” No, we haven’t heard much about it. All we know is pretty much what everybody else knows. We know that Jason [Executive Producer Jason Katims] is seriously looking at writing a script and we know that it would pick up pretty much where the show left off. It wouldn’t take us back in time, it would take us to a new place and a new time, probably with some new kids and maybe some cameos from some old friends.

Seeing as though actor Zach Gilford just spent the better part of the past four seasons breaking our hearts playing Dillon Texas’ prodigal son, boyfriend and QB1 on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, it seems only fitting that his next gig will send him deep into the South American jungle to repair them. Created by Jenna Bans and produced by GREY’S ANATOMY’s Shonda Rhimes, OFF THE MAP sees Gilford playing Dr. Tommy Fuller, one of three young doctors hoping to turn their life around by helping those less fortunate.

What’s it like to go from Texas to Hawaii, what exactly is Tommy running away from, and of course what can FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT fans, more specifically Matt and Julie fans expect from the upcoming final season? We caught up with the nice-as-you-would-imagine actor to find out just that.

Does having kicked off your career on a show as critically acclaimed as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS make it that much more of a challenge when it comes to choosing your next project?
Zach Gilford: Yeah. You know TV is always a gamble where you definitely have to be choosey and strategic. Which is why I was so excited about the opportunity to work on OFF THE MAP. Not only has Shonda [Rhimes] created a couple of the biggest hits on TV that aren’t your typical cop/lawyer/procedural and are actually kind of character driven, it’s on ABC, which I’ve always liked as a network. Plus, the script seemed good and was such a departure in so many ways from FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS in everything from the character I’m playing to the tone of the show. Unlike FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS which was very real and earnest, OFF THE MAP is escapism, in that it’s an over-the-top action adventure that you can’t take too seriously, which was really part of its appeal.

Your character Tommy, the bad boy doctor is indeed quite a departure from the more reserved and sensitive Matt Saracen. Begging the question, which character is closer to actor Zach Gilford?
I wish Matt was closer to Zach, but I’m probably closer to Tommy. I’m pretty goofy, outspoken and a bit cocky unfortunately. Although I like to think that I have the same sensitivity as Matt and that I’m a pretty good guy.

One of the most interesting things about OFF THE MAP is that it shoots in Hawaii, while FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS of course shot in Texas. Do you see it as a plus that you have yet to shoot a series in Hollywood, with all the trapping that comes with that?
I think it’s huge. On FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, which wasn’t a huge hit to begin with, I think everyone was a genuinely a good person and was going to stay grounded. But I also think a huge part of it was being in Texas. It wasn’t like every night someone is going to this big Hollywood event, some club or being seen around in that way and I think that really helped keep everyone humble. And I think Hawaii lends itself to that as well. The people from LOST, from everything I heard, they were so humble and so normal. Partially because they were off on this island, they did their show which was one of the biggest thing on TV, yet they were able to live a normal live and weren’t overwhelmed by the Hollywood hype machine.

Are we going to learn more about what brought Tommy to South America?
Here actually is a sort of similarity to Matt Saracen. I remember back in the pilot, Jesse Plemons (Landry) was saying that Matt had a lot of “Daddy Issues” and a lot of Tommy’s issues stems from his family. I don’t think it wasn’t so much one big awful event, but they just really weren’t proud of him. And he was sort of proud and cocky where I think that he kind of realized that he was in the wrong, but instead of admitting it, he just took off. And I think being down in South America, he starts to realize that he’s a doctor, he can do all this medicine. Instead of just doing boob jobs and nose jobs for people who don’t need them, he can actually use his skills for good. In an upcoming episode for instance, he’ll use his plastic surgery skills to fix a scar on a girl’s face that has caused her to be alienated, because her people think she’s possessed by demons. Tommy will make the scar virtually disappear and he’ll start to see that he can do good and truly help people.

And when he’s not helping people, would it be safe to assume, being a Shonda Rhimes produced show and all, that there will be a little romance in Tommy’s future?
Actually a couple of relationships! Tommy still has that kind of frat boy attitude. They’ve kind of designed it so this medical facility is a stone’s throw from a tourist hotspot. So while there are very impoverished places, there are also resort style places for adventure travellers. Which means lots of young girls drop by for a short period of time and he definitely takes advantage of that. But that’s also another arc for him, finally finding someone that he can have a connection with that’s not just sexual.

Is there any better pick-up line than, “I’m an American Doctor down here to help the poor”?
It’s a great pick up line.

Probably the best, next of course to being an actor on your own TV show
I usually lie. Usually I open with something else.

People don’t recognize you?
It’s kind of funny. The first thing I ever did was a guest spot on LAW & ORDER: SVU. I was in New York and my best friend, who I lived with, thought he would try and pick up girls based on the fact that I was on LAW & ORDER once! It really was a kind of an interesting tactic and didn’t work so well.

Probably doesn’t help that everyone in New York has been on an episode of LAW & ORDER!
It’s kind of a rite of passage.

And finally, just for the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT fans out there. Will fans of Matt and Julie be happy with how their story comes to a close?
I think they are going to be happy to see where it ends and I personally was really happy with it. The plan wasn’t originally, as far as i knew, to bring me back for the fifth season. I kind of left in the fourth season, then I showed up and then I showed up again. Until they asked me back where I really wanted to know what the plan was because I didn’t just want to be the guy who couldn’t get another job and kept popping up in his old show. So I talked to [Executive Producer] Jason Katims about it and I loved what they came up with. I thought it was a great ending for the show and I think fans will be very happy with it. and i’m really happy with wit and i’m really really critical.

By: Vlada Gelman

1. Will THE GOOD WIFE be even better in season two? One of the most successful new dramas of last season isn’t playing it safe. Season two spoilers hint at major shakeups and new characters played by incredible actors like Tammy Blanchard and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Scott Porter in a storyline that will set him up against the mysterious Kalinda. Add to that guest star Michael J. Fox, Carey working for the other side, Alan Cumming as a regular cast member, and THE GOOD WIFE seems poised to top itself. I can’t wait.

2. Can THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Nina Dobrev successfully pull off playing two characters in more than just flashbacks? Early buzz seems to suggest, “Yes,” and what we’ve seen so far in previews of season two looks very promising. Plus, after Dobrev’s surprise Emmys performance, I’m not going to bet against the girl.

3. Will the COMMUNITY writers run from Jeff and Annie again? I was lucky enough to visit the Community set recently, where Joel McHale and Alison Brie talked about their characters unexpected chemistry, so I’ll have more about this later. But I’m still concerned that the Community writers are scared of the unexpected, somewhat inappropriate chemistry between Jeff and the much younger Annie.

4. Which version of GLEE will air this fall? Ryan Murphy keeps telling the press that season two will be more intimate and will focus on the regular cast. “We’re scaling it back and concentrating on the stories,” he said at the TCA Press Tour. Then he proceeded to talk about more tribute episodes, the Britney Spears episode, the big Super Bowl episode, Susan Boyle possibly guesting, a book tour, etc.

5. Is LONE STAR on the wrong network? A morally ambiguous and thoughtful character study, I’m worried that my favorite fall pilot might be too sophisticated for Fox. The show would feel more at home on cable, but with direction by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) and an ambitious conceit — a con man juggles a girlfriend and a wife (also his mark), both of whom he’s in love with — LONE STAR is really more like an indie film than a TV show.

6. Why are there so many new FRIENDS rip-offs? Last season’s breakout comedy pilots were mostly about families (Modern Family, The Middle) and misfist/outcast families (COMMUNITY, GLEE, COUGAR TOWN). So why are there so many friends-in-different-states-of-relationship comedies (PERFECT COUPLES, FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS, HAPPY ENDINGS, MIXED SIGNALS) coming out next season? It’s like comedy development from the past.

7. How long will we have to wait for OUTSOURCED to get canceled so PARKS AND RECREATION can return early? Way to kill PARKS AND RECREATION’s momentum, NBC, pushing it until midseason. You got Rob Lowe to sign on as a series regular and you’re still forcing us to watch OUTSOURCED?

8. Who cares who takes over for Michael Scott on THE OFFICE? While I understand NBC’s reluctance to let go of one of its most highly rated comedies, THE OFFICE was the least funny and buzzy show on NBC’s Thursday comedy lineup last season. The series should just pack it up with Michael Scott.

9. Can HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER get its mojo back? I think most fans and critics would agree that last season was the show’s weakest. Too many standalone episodes and a lack of direction really hurt the show, making it lose one of its most endearing qualities: Its heart. After talking to creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays at TCA, I’m actually excited for next season. It sounds like the show is back on the right path, with its heart on its sleeve, Robin Sparkles in its back pocket — before you scuff at that casting, she was great in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl! — and the mother in the near distance.

10. How much will I cry during the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS series finale? I’m actually not a crier during TV and movies, but I imagine that saying goodbye to one of the best TV shows ever, which kicks off its fifth and final season Oct. 27 on DirecTV, will break me.

As much as fans have hated having to say goodbye to many of our favorite Dillon Panthers, would it be safe to say that the choice to have some of your original cast members graduate has resulted in some of the show’s strongest episodes to date?
Jason Katims: I think that in the third season we kind of made this decision that we were going to let go of some of our cast members. It was a really hard decision but we realized it wasn’t going to be good to have them hang around and be window dressing. So for Gaius Charles and Scott Porter we wrote these storylines for them that wound up being incredibly powerful. So when it came to the fourth season I felt — as sad as it is to do this because I love every member of the cast and feel lucky to work with them — I also knew that I could say with conviction that we were going to be able to tell a great story this way because it really does energize the writers into doing something good, knowing that they have to tell a big story about someone [Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly] in four episodes.

For those of us who do not subscribe to DirecTV, when we last left FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, Coach Taylor was forced to move from the comfy confines of Dillon High to East Dillon High. Where you at all apprehensive about such a big change in scenery for our favorite coach/father?
No. The move to a new school, to a new population and to a new part of town has really reinvigorated the show. We have four new incredible series regular cast members (Matt Lauria, Michael B. Jordan, Jurnee Smollett and Madison Burge) who have just stepped up and are all wonderful and at least to my mind are different then the characters that have come before it which just makes things very exciting and helps to keep having the show feel like its a retread and we’re revisiting the same stuff.

Something that we just discovered was that in real-life your son has Aspergers, a syndrome which has obviously played a large role in PARENTHOOD. On FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS you had Scott Porter in a wheelchair. Do you think your personal experiences have made you more open to shining a spotlight on different types of characters that aren’t traditionally given the kind of exposure they might normally have had on TV?
I came on after the second episode of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, so the Scott Porter storyline wasn’t my decision. However, I did feel that it was a great opportunity to tell the story of this guy, particularly with Scott Porter playing it so tremendously. He never doing it in a self-pitying way, or a woe is me way, and brought so much humor, life and beauty to the role which really meant the world to me. In the case of PARENTHOOD and the child with Aspergers, there was in the original movie a child who was having ‘issues.’ It wasn’t as specific as I have painted it in the series, but it was something that was there and I thought was an appropriate thing to build upon.

Is there a difference writing for such an established cast on PARENTHOOD versus writing for FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, which with the exception of Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler featured many young actors new to the industry?
You know, I don’t really approach it differently. The one thing that I’m able to do on both shows is write and know that I can throw anything at any of those actors and they’ll step up. It’s something that you don’t often get and I have it on both shows. It gives you an incredible amount of freedom when you’re writing and it’s very exciting to write a scene and think, “Oh My God, what is Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Kyle Chandler or Connie Britton going to do with this?” I’m just in a lucky position, where there is no actor I’m trying to write around or write in a special way.
