Giving new meaning to the phrase “Can’t stop the signal,” comes the following jaw-dropper.

Fresh off their landmark deal to secure the rights to HOUSE OF CARDS, the much-anticipated television series and political thriller from Executive Producer David Fincher and Kevin Spacey, comes the news that Netflix has given the go-ahead to make Nathan Fillion’s dream a reality.

FIREFLY will soar again!

“Continuing our tradition of breaking new ground, Netflix is proud to announce that we have reached a deal with 20th Century Fox Television to produce 26 new episodes of Joss Whedon’s critically-acclaimed series FIREFLY,” said Netflix Senior VP of Development Lirpa Sloof in a statement released today. “Gripping, serialized one-hour dramas have become an integral aspect of the Netflix experience over the years and FIREFLY, thanks to Joss Whedon’s unique vision and his remarkable group of actors, goes a long way in helping to further our commitment to bringing our audience the best entertainment Hollywood has to offer.”

According to Sloof, Whedon, alongside brother Jed, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jane Espenson have been quietly working on scripts and, as a result, will be ready to begin production once work finishes on his current project, The Avengers.

By: Tiffany Vogt

If past decade of television has taught us anything, it is that reality television is here to stay. Although interest in reality television has waned a bit in recent years, the same can be said of scripted television shows. Ratings have declined on all fronts – it is not exclusive to either reality television or scripted television.

So such decline has led to speculation about what will be the next big thing. What will be the determining factor to reshape television as we know it? With the popularity of reality television since 2000, it has been hard to see that a brand new arena of content has sprung up under our noses.

Also increasingly popular in the past decade has been the proliferation of social networking. Whether it be MySpace, Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, the internet has broken out as the next big thing. Not content to sit in front of a television, teenagers today are consuming their entertainment via their iPods and iPhones. Thus, televised media has morphed into web media. One cannot only watch television shows on the ‘net, one can now watch a whole array of original content created specifically for the web.

It is still uncertain how to make such original content viable from a profit perspective, but despite the dubious certainty of economic gain, it has not stopped entrepreneurial minds from venturing out and staking a claim on the web. It is cheap, it is accessible — and there are millions of untapped potential in viewers searching for something to watch and interact with.

On the cutting edge of this vast landscape are such pioneers as SANCTUARY, THE GUILD, THE LEGEND OF NEIL, DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG, and CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. Newer fare includes breakouts like RIESE and VAMPIRE MOB. Interestingly, SANCTUARY started as a web sensation and leapt to the television screen; and RIESE hopes to follow suit. But for the likes of THE GUILD and DR. HORRIBLE, they are content to rule the ‘net. They are super-stars in their own arena – virtually unchallenged, though there does seem to be a lot of renewed interest in creating original content for the web.

With an unprecedented number of scripted dramas trying to make the leap from television to the web and aiming to secure their audience on both platforms (like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’s webisodes), it is not surprising that reality television is also dipping their toe in the internet waters and trying to see if their audience will follow – or if they too can tap into the vast number of internet lurkers in search of something to entertain.

With the constraints of YouTube being limited to just a few minutes, the appeal of Hulu has caught the attention of one new enterprising reality series. Looking to find more innovative ways to market their products without buying expensive television ads, Ford Motor Company is taking the big step towards the future by launching its series “Focus Rally: America” directly on Hulu in February 2011.

What is “Focus Rally: America”? In searching for ways to make product placement more interactive, Ford teamed up with the producers of “The Amazing Race” to create a road race phenomenon directly for broadcast on Hulu.

Borrowing and combining the best elements from the iconic film THE AMAZING RACE and the reality television show of the same name, and then mixing in Ford’s cutting-edge vision of cars of the future, “Focus Rally: America” seeks to be both a cross-country race and a treasure hunt along the way. They want to make the series an adventure for both the contestants and the fans whether watching at home on their computers or on their iPhones. With fans able to win prizes along with the race participants, the entire web experience is designed to be an interactive way to engage the fans and make them more fully vested in the race – not just in who wins, but also in how they can help along the way and get goodies, freebies and prizes for their contributions.

This is product placement and promotion at its finest. With manufacturers still struggling for innovative ways to integrate their products into the existing television landscape without being too obvious and intrusive – and not making their products a laughing-stock in the process – sponsorship has become a much more subtle and appreciated approach to advertising. Such shows like FX’s “Damages” relied heavily on sponsorship by big names such as General Motor’s Cadillac. Rather than try to place their product in the show and be ridiculed for such blatant manipulation of the viewers, General Motors just announced that it was sponsoring the show and stuck its name up at the beginning and end of each episode. It was a much more sophisticated approach.

Looking to take the next step, Ford’s attempt to more fully integrate its product by making a direct-for-the-net series showcasing its new Focus vehicles and their fun new capabilities, it designed an entire show around its product. Not looking to capitalize on the already inundated television market, it also seeks to break new ground by being the first web series to launch directly on Hulu. Ford does not want “Focus Rally: America” to compete with shows like TOP GEAR and THE AMAZING RACE; it wants to create a new arena to play in – and it has invited fans with a passion for cars, racing and treasuring hunting to join them.

Taking a page off other successful reality television shows playbooks, Ford has also recruited a hot young fresh face to be the spokesperson for its series. It recruited Olympic ski champion Jonny Moseley to be the face of “Focus Rally: America.” Undaunted by his limited background in car racing, Jonny’s enthusiasm is certain to be infectious for viewers. It will be interesting to see how this new series fares and if viewers jump on board this new approach to web content and interactive reality type shows.

It is noteworthy that for over a decade the encroachment of reality television has chafed at the sensibilities of discriminating television viewers. To help alleviate such tension between those who enjoy such programming and those who avoid it like the plague, internet programming may offer a solution. If more original programming (whether it be scripted or reality based) were to be offered on the ‘net, it may pave the way for more programming — and not the ultra-competitive and restrictive number of limited primetime television slots.

As the saying goes, “the world is our oyster.” While television is a closed universe with limited time slots, the internet is open territory. It can host an unlimited number of new shows and at very little cost. Exploring the ability to introduce more original content for the ‘net is an exciting opportunity and it is great to see that advertisers and manufacturers are willing to jump right in. Kudos to Ford for taking the risk and creating new content for viewers in the new world. Plus, to be invited on an interactive treasure hunt is divine!

Bad news FRINGE fans, DirecTV — the satellite provider that made an unbelievably fantastic name for itself by extending the life of such TV Addict favorites like FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and DAMAGES — will no longer be in the business of doing so. “In the future, I think we’re going to move away from that model,” said Chris Long, DirecTV senior entertainment and production VP, who in an interview with Daily Variety revealed that the company will instead opt to develop their own original content from here on it. [Source]

For those looking for a much needed laugh following a hectic and stress-filled Thanksgiving Holiday, we’ve got some very bad news for you. Rather than serve up fresh helpings of COMMUNITY, 30 ROCK and THE OFFICE this Thursday, NBC will instead be airing a “People of the Year” special hosted by Matt Lauer [Groan!] What’s worse, said people of the year will include Kim Kardashian [Double Groan!], and LeBron “The Decision” James [Triple Groan!]. According to Michael Ausiello, GREY’S ANATOMY is seriously considering doing a musical episode sometime during the second half of the season. And while we have nothing against musical episodes per-say (see: SCRUBS), most definitely not music to our ears is the timing of this one. Which naturally raises the slightly awkward albeit painfully obvious question: Why exactly would creator Shonda Rhimes risk straying off course with a needless ratings stunt after working so hard to finally right the sinking ship that was Seattle Grace. [Source]

Seriously. Smitten does not begin to describe our admiration for the incredibly well spoken, adorably nerdy (Counts Peggle as one of her favorite games!), and ridiculously savvy television star turned internet phenom who when she isn’t guesting on every show under the sun (see: DOLLHOUSE, HOUSE, EUREKA), is busy creating, writing, and starring in THE GUILD, one of the world’s most popular web series.

When this TV Addict takes the time to pen an ‘Open Letter’ to the likes of Ronald D. Moore, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the Winchester Brothers and Chace Crawford, we don’t really do so with the expectation that we’ll actually get a response from the subject. So you can imagine our surprise when Joss Whedon (via Whedonesque.com, the web’s undisputed source for all thing Whedon) not only took some time out of his busy schedule to post a response to yesterday’s Open Letter to Joss Whedon. But in doing so, proved once again — thanks to his innate ability to connect with his fandom on a personal level — why he is in fact destined to become the man to pioneer the first-ever hour-long web-only production.

Of course until that day comes, the auteur himself would really appreciate if you don’t lose hope and tune into DOLLHOUSE (TV Guide Magazine’s Matt Roush calls tonight’s installment “a dark powerhouse”). See for yourself after the jump.

Hi guys. Lot going on.

First off, TV addict not dumb. (But you gotta get clean, man. We love you and you HAVE A PROBLEM. I’m just saying, try a book. A book about TV! Not cold turkey.)

Directing Glee. This is not a diabolical Fox scheme. This is me going “can I can I?” Did you see last night? Best cut-to-opening-credits moment since the halcyon days of BSG.

Howzabout that schedule? Well, I’m not as depressed as everyone else. We weren’t about to rock sweeps anyway, and though there’s a chilly November, December is CRAZY. It’s like an Advent calendar of episodes! We get November to try to spread the word (which I’ll be leaning on Fox to do, though it’s hard to imagine them doing as good a job as the WhyIWatch guy) and then December is pure gluttony. Plus the episodes line up extremely well in these pairs, and we’ll have an absurdly appropriate lead-in.

Back to breaking Tim’s episode. Keep the faith, peeps. I’ll bring you news (and hopefully a little humor, I mean would it kill me to punch these up a little?) when I can. -j

With Michael Ausiello breaking the somewhat expected news that FOX is benching DOLLHOUSE for November Sweeps and in the process, virtually guaranteeing your availability to direct that episode of GLEE, I couldn’t help but wonder….

Is it not time to take a page from Felicia Day and her GUILD by cutting the network out of the equation?

After-all, If DOLLHOUSE’s consistently low ratings are any indication, you’ve got at the very least, two million loyal fans devouring everything you touch. Which means, should you ever decide to go THE GUILD route and distribute your own series online for a a mere 99¢ per download, one might expect you to net somewhere in the range of 1.5 to 2 million dollars per episode of [say, for argument sake] FIREFLY: THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES. Which, if we’re to believe TV By The Numbers, is a healthy profit considering the average episode of DOLLHOUSE is said to have cost somewhere in the range of 650,000 to 1.3 million per.

Add to those profits, DVD sales, foreign distribution, product placement, online streaming, merchandising and the one thing money can’t buy — actual ownership of the show affording you the creative freedom to do whatever you choose — and once again, I have to ask, what are you waiting for?

I think you’d agree that FOX tried. The network put their money and marketing muscle behind the show, even going as far as to renew it for an unexpected second season. Unfortunately, the reality of the current television landscape seems to be that if you really want to stick to your own dark and gritty vision, one that asks the difficult questions and challenges viewers with something other than the procedural-of-the-week, you’re probably not going to be able to do it on any of the major networks (just ask the creators of SOUTHLAND). Well, that, or either start sending Echo on more missions that involve either (a) Vampires or (b) Glee Clubs.

DOLLHOUSE’s inevitable cancellation is a sign. A sign that it’s time to continue the pioneering journey you started with DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG by putting your money (or at the very least, some savvy investor’s money) where your mouth is and see what happens.

Rest assured, this TV Addict will be first in line to press ‘Buy it Now’ when you do.

If the TV Addict Ran Entertainment Weekly

“We just wanted something extraordinary.”

Those are the words creator Joss Whedon used to sum up what the DOLLHOUSE team set out to do in the season’s thirteenth episode “Epitaph One which was just recently released exclusively on DVD and on iTunes.

Now comes the tricky part: What exactly does one do for an encore after the series virtually everyone had written off gets a renewal so unexpected that Whedon called it “the biggest surprise of my career”… and you’ve already revealed how it’s all going to end.

“Had I known episode thirteen wouldn’t be our last, would I have done something different?” he pondered during our recent chat with him. “Maybe. Because we really did tease out a lot. But I didn’t think we were necessarily done, I just thought the best thing we could do is just take a baseball bat, swing as hard as we can and leave nothing to for the ride back, because who knows?”

That said, Wheton assures us that, “What happens next is really exciting.”

Fortunately for us, he went on to elaborate beyond that rather coy tease! “We’re trying to do something that’s much more cinematic and visceral and really live inside the story,” he says in previewing the new season, which debuts September 24 at 9PM on FOX (Global in Canada). “This season, I’ve really ratcheted up the way I work. We’re shooting in HD, so we’re able to move faster, do more, and make the second season more like the latter half of the first season.”

In other-words, “Epitaph One’ is just the beginning. “The insane unaired thirteenth episode will inform what we do the whole season. It really helped give us a direction and understanding of what we want from the actors, and what we think the audience wants to see from this ensemble.”

Direction? Understanding? Yes, yes, that’s great and all… but how about some answers dammit!

Not surprisingly, Whedon is somewhat tight-lipped when it comes to how in fact himself and his merry band of writers are going to live up to the ridiculously cool post-apocolyptic future that was painted in “Epitatph One.” But did offer, at a DOLLHOUSE set visit during the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour that the series will pick up exactly three months after the events of last May’s season finale, fans can expect more three-dimensional dolls and — best of all — a special guest appearance by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’s Jamie Bamber.

Who won’t be the only familiar face this season.

“Last year I had to be careful that it didn’t seem the show was a party for my friends,” explained Whedon, who ultimately changed his tune after a weekend spent at San Diego’s Comic Con, realizing that, yeah, it sort of is a party for his friends (see: Felicia Day, who will be back in the second season premiere) “Ultimately it also saves time if you have someone you know who can get the job done.”

So does that mean CASTLE star Nathan Fillion should be waiting by his phone? “I’m trying to sabotage the show, it’s not working, but I’m trying.”
