For the love of all things Fae, the Syfy series LOST GIRL has invited viewers into a fantastically fun universe were the supernatural live amongst us. Walking the fine line between the Light and Dark Fae factions is Bo, a “chosen one” who has decided to align herself with humans – and making herself their appointed guardian, although usually for a price. Aiding in Bo’s adventures is her trusty friend and ally, Kenzi, and her reluctant Light Fae friend and sometimes lover, Dyson. Taking a few minutes to chat with press in a recent conference call, stars Anna Silk, Ksenia Solo and Kris Holden-Ried reflected on what makes the Fae stories so intoxicating and irresistible.

How do you think the show has changed since it started? And why do you think it’s been so successful?
KSENIA: Well I think that in Season One we were really finding our footing. We were discovering who we are as our characters and we were really discovering who we are as a show, what our voice really is; and I think we all knew that we got involved with something very unique. O course we didn’t know what the fans’ response was going to be, and the fact that it’s been what it is has been incredibly humbling and incredibly exciting for us all at the same time. I think Season Two we really came back with more “oomph,” if I can say it that way. We really had time to explore in Season One and Season Two, and we came back ready to kick-ass. It was also getting a chance to meet our fans at Comic-Con and Fan Expo and all these different events. It’s been really amazing and what I thought was the most kind of exciting was when I saw other girls dressed up as Kenzi. For me, that was like a sign of like, “wow, people really enjoy these characters and they really love the show!” And just we couldn’t be happier.
ANNA: Yeah, and I think the show — I mean it’s from the first episode there was so much room for growth and the show could only sort of grow and develop from there, playing Bo, this whole world was brand new to her. So it was brand new to the audience as well. So we had so many places to go and so much to explore and that’s what we’ve done. I know that first season is still airing here in the U.S. and it’s gotten a great response. The show continues to grow, like Ksenia said, first season really laid a good foundation for the second season. And we really sort of took off from there and took it in new directions, which I can’t wait for everyone to see. The fan response has been incredible. I know I said this before, but people have really taken ownership of the show and really invest in the lives of these characters — ad in our lives as a result. So it’s really cool.

How do you think has the dynamic between the cast changed between the first season and the third season?
KSENIA: I’m always like taking quotes from what [Anna] says. I’m always like well — as Anna puts it — you mentioned like how we came back and we really felt each other’s rhythms, like a real family did.
ANNA: We did, yeah. Like I can remember that first few episodes back, the whole cast was in a scene together and everything just felt like a family, like everyone sort of naturally knew when to come in and obviously it’s written out on a piece of paper for us as well. But we naturally sort of have each other’s rhythm and energy as actors, but also as these characters. So again because the show starts with everyone meeting for the first time the relationships have naturally evolved and changed — and as actors on set, we’ve just sort of bonded as the episodes went on. So it’s been really great.
KSENIA: I mean personally I hated everybody but . . .
ANNA: Yeah, Ksenia hates everyone. [Laughter]

What do each of you like best about working in sci-fi and if you have had any downside working in it?
KRIS: I love working in sci-fi and fantasy genre because it allows us to have so many different creative story lines and characters that we can explore. I mean having super powers or being able to be really old, these are things that, as an artist, we don’t get to often explore or learn to express. It’s a lot of fun. It’s very imaginative and it’s a great playing field to work with. So, yeah, I’d do it all the time. The only downside is – one I don’t really get — but the girls, I guess, have to wear a lot of tight uncomfortable fitting corsets and stuff.
KSENIA: I think the only downside is when you have like crazy intense emotional scenes but you’re acting against a green screen, or like a tennis ball. Like that’s always an interesting experience, and you always feel a little bit stupid I have to admit but the challenge is just making it as real as possible. But I completely agree with Kris that you get to kind of go outside of reality and it’s always a lot of fun. You get to go wild.
ANNA: Yeah, I mean you get to just play. This scenario on the show and the circumstances and all the stuff that’s going on is really real to these characters. And we take it seriously but we don’t necessarily take the world that seriously because it’s crazy Fae world, so we get to laugh at it a lot too and have fun with it. But the downside — I don’t know, I mean I guess along the lines of what Ksenia said, I’ve had to sword fight something that’s not there, and it’s a little weird. But you just have to trust that it’s going to look good in the end, and it usually does. So it’s good.

Since you are currently in your third season, is it tough doing press for Season One?
ANNA: Yeah, I think so, I mean these are things that we’ve done quite a while ago and the show has really continued to grow from there. So as actors and as the characters, we’re sort of in a different place than where we started. I’ve actually had to kind of review some of the Season One episodes in order to be able to do press because it was quite a while ago. So it’s challenging for sure, but it’s really exciting to bring it to a new audience and it’s really cool to see a whole new response to people that are experiencing it for the first time. So it’s challenging I would say a little bit.
KRIS: But rewarding.
ANNA: But rewarding, yes. Yeah.

Can you talk a little bit about next week’s episode?
ANNA: Yes, it’s Episode 10 that they’re showing next week. It’s the one where Inga’s character is introduced, yeah. Well, it’s definitely from Bo’s perspective. It’s an episode where there’s a new character introduced that is going to have an impact on her life, and it certainly has an impact on her life in that episode. I don’t want to give away too much. But she meets someone who has something very much in common with her, which is a first for Bo. So it’s something that is gong to change her a little bit.
KSENIA: And I believe Bo and Kenzi get to do a little speed-dating, which is always a fun time.
KRIS: And Kenzi discovers something about Trick.
KSENIA: Yes.
KRIS: And Dyson needs a haircut. [Laughter]

Can you talk about a memorable experience from filming this show?
KRIS: There’s so many!
KSENIA: I know, there’s so many.
KRIS: My gosh. I guess for me I’m going to take it right back to the pilot. That was the first thing we ever did together, the three of us.
KSENIA: Yeah, that first day freezing our tushes off on Clean Street.
KRIS: That’s right, when we all sort of met and we had no idea what we were doing but we were creating this world for the first time. It was very exciting.
ANNA: And we were all trying to be like really cool, but it was so cold, so we all had runny noses.
KRIS: And we’re doing this big acting. We’re like, “yes, we thought we had the idea of what the show was.” We were really serious about everything, and it was a great episode. I still think it’s one of our best episodes — but that first time when we were all together working, with Penny and I laughing and Anna trying to figure out how to have a sex scene that was properly executed.
ANNA: Yeah, and that opening of Episode 8 was airing a couple weeks ago here in the US was – Episode 8 was our original pilot, so that sex scene that Kris is talking about was almost like doing a stunt. I mean it was exhausting and I remember it was my birthday that day. Do you remember that Kris?
KRIS: That’s right.
ANNA: And I spent it nude, covered in blood on top of you. It was a great way to spend my birthday. So that was really great. That was a good memory.
KRIS: Yeah, absolutely.
KSENIA: I don’t think I can top that memory, so I’ll just leave that with you.
ANNA: And I think in terms of when you say off the show, I guess you just mean like behind the scenes. I mean we all have a lot of fun. It’s tough shooting a series obviously, it’s hard on everyone. It’s long hours and that kind of thing so it’s great that we all get along and sort of support each other when someone needs a little extra support we’re all there for each other. I mean we’re a very happy cast and crew so those are the good memories from that, I mean it’s great.

When you went into Season Two, you knew that you were going to have U.S. distribution and then you found out you had the Season Three renewal. How did that change the dynamic since you knew you were going to have some time developing these characters?
KSENIA: We all became really big divas. [Laughter]
ANNA: We all got bigger trailers. I mean for myself I don’t know that it necessarily changed the dynamic, but because I think that LOST GIRL has a long way to go, I think that because it’s such a vast world to explore there’s a lot of possibilities. And we still haven’t tapped into many of them. So I guess it changes your mind set a little bit in terms of like, “Okay, we’re in this for a while. So let’s pace ourselves a little and think about sort of how to . . .” I guess it makes you kind of think about some subtleties you can bring into the character that you’re playing. I mean, I can only speak for myself, it was just exciting news really. I mean it was just exciting that we get to be on the show and get to play these great parts and do all this fun stuff for longer — and bring it to a bigger audience. So it was just exciting news.
KRIS: Yeah, I don’t think it really changes our day-to-day performance. I mean we have a certain job to do, and it requires a lot of presence in the moment, and that’s what we focus on. But, I mean for me, it’s nice to know that we’re going to continue to work on this. It’s kind of a relaxed sort of, “okay, now we can keep telling our story for a longer time.” And the age old actor’s phobia, “When am I going to be out of a job? When’s my next job” has been sort of put off for a little while.
ANNA: I know it’s weird. I’m not used to that feeling.
KSENIA: I think just as much as the fans are excited to see where the show goes and what’s going to happen to the characters and what new guest stars and creatures are going to come in, I think we all feel the exact same because we obviously don’t know what’s going to happen. And it’s cool that our story lines can really at this point go anywhere, so it will be fun for us to explore different avenues in that sense.

Have you had much input into what actually has happened with your characters?
KRIS: I was just going to say we kind of have as much input as we want. There’s a chain of command that also has sort of decision-powers or vetoes. But I think we’re very fortunate. It’s not a huge sort of network show, so it’s still an independent production where we actually can converse with the writers and executive producers one-on-one when we need to, and they’re always open to our story ideas. So we’re very fortunate to be able to have input. However much we take it is up to us, I guess.
ANNA: Yeah, and I also think that –I’ve felt this way but over the course of the two seasons that we’ve done — the writers that have gotten to know us tend to write more to our strengths. And it’s when that sort of changes that I might speak up about something and it’s generally been welcomed input. So it does feel very collaborative.

Is there anything that you’ve brought into your acting that you think has maybe helped you — that you think is important to your characters?
KRIS: Yeah, absolutely. The sports has been a huge help for me. It’s how I got into acting. Especially with Dyson being such a physical character. That was one of the things that I liked about it. It was an inspiration for me to get back in shape and like stronger again. And it was fantastic, up until I injured myself in the middle of second season. But I’ve bounced back from that. The thing is you have to be careful always doing stunts. It’s like I’ve been in the O/R. Accidents happen and you just have to be careful. But it’s great to be able to bring a physicality. With Dyson, it has a lot to do with energy work as well, because playing a super hero you need to have these super sort of charged energy. So there’s all kinds of different sort of tricks that I’ve learned along the way to get my energy up.
ANNA: And for Bo I definitely try to stay fit. I don’t have the same kind of sports background that Kris has, but I try to learn little skills along the way and work with different trainers and my stunt double and that kind of thing. Then in terms of other life things that have helped me prepare, I mean just every little thing in my life really helps you prepare to play any character. I mean for Bo, being vulnerable and afraid most of the time, I’ve got that down pat. So that really helps a lot to play this character. But, yeah, I guess every little aspect of your life kind of prepares you.
KSENIA: And for myself I really take inspiration from great actors that I admire from movies, from people I know. Kenzi, she’s really so full of life and she has so much energy that that’s one thing that was very new for me — playing a character that was (a) the comedic relief, (b) somebody who’s just seems like she has a rocket on her somewhere because she’s constantly go-go-go-go-go. So that’s something that I’ve always kind of have to work on – to remember to make sure that I eat properly, make sure that I physically have enough energy to make it through the long days and keep that energy up and keep Kenzi as colorful and bright as she is.

Why do you think Vex had such a strong impact on both the audience, as well as you as actors?
KRIS: Well, it’s a combination of Paul Amos being such a fantastic actor and also the character being so interesting and having the power to manipulate to be a Mesmer. It just fits so well with us because, as supercharged as all of us think we can be, here’s a guy who can just take control of you at any moment and use your power against you. And also Paul Amos is just an awesome fellow, he’s become one of our best mates and luckily he’s become more and more involved in the show as its gone on.
ANNA: Yeah, and the thing about Vex too is that he’s so powerful. He’s so in control, but he doesn’t take any of it seriously which kind of drives us crazy. As a character, not as Paul, Vex just kind of gets under our skin and continues to do so in the series. And he brings a lot to the show. He’s just really fun and funny and really committed actor. He’s great.
KSENIA: I feel like a lot of people, a lot of actors can play like the evil character, but there’s something about Paul that is so incredibly intriguing. He’s such a physical actor. And he is uniquely talented. Working with him you really get sucked into his energy. I think the fact that Vex is so manipulative and so sexual and just so many different characteristics that help create the all powerful being that he is. He really reminds me of Johnny Depp. The fact that he’s British I think just makes him like way cooler than any of us.
ANNA: And he has a lot of sex appeal. Paul does himself. but also as Vex, he’s got this real strong sex appeal which is . . .
KSENIA: Nobody can wear a pair of leather pants like he can! There has been many times on set where I look at him and I go like, “Damn Paul! Like you’re looking good! I really don’t know who else could make those look good. But you make them look good!” [Laughter]

Will Vex be back going to be in the next season?
KSENIA: Yes.
KRIS: Paul comes back.
KSENIA: Yes, he’s back.

Kenzi gets some really great lines, do you have any favorites?
KSENIA: Oh goodness, I get this question sometimes and there’s been so many that it’s really hard to pick. But this speed-dating episode and the quoting Ludicris was definitely one of my favorites. Also in the first seasons — I guess it would have been episode 8 if my memory serves me correct — there’s a line I have where I say, “It smells like fried bitch.” That was the very first episode we filmed, so I was just getting into the groove and the mojo of Kenzi. So getting to say that line our like first week of filming was definitely a lot of fun.

What are your perspectives on playing such overtly portrayed sexual characters?
ANNA: Well, Bo is essentially an overly sexual character because that’s what she is. I mean she’s a succubus. So that’s who and what she is. It’s definitely refreshing. I think it’s one of the things that we’re most proud of on the show is the fact that there’s this love triangle that gets established in the first season between Bo-and-Dyson and Bo-and-Lauren, and both of those relationships kind of rival each other. They’re really strong. They’re sexual and they’re real. So I definitely think I agree: it is refreshing and it is something that we’re really proud of. It’s funny, in watching some of the episodes from first seasons which I’ve done lately to kind of try to remember what we did, I can’t believe how many people I kissed. Like oh my gosh, I kissed so many people which is an interesting part of my job, but it’s an important part of the show and an important part of the character.
KRIS: I think one of the things that we’re really blessed with on our show is the great chemistry we all have with each other. So it really makes taking a leap from a true caring friendship with the actor you’re working with and then spinning it towards putting in tones of sexiness isn’t a difficult step. And that real trust and chemistry we have with each other is I think what transcends through the screen.
ANNA: Yeah, and we all like each other too. Kris is very likeable obviously and very respectful actor to work with, so any of the stuff that we’ve done is just sort of comes out of mutual respect and caring for one another. It works.
KSENIA: And I think sexuality is such an important part of life. I think the fact that our show is so open to it, and it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight or you’re blue or black or green. It doesn’t matter. It’s open to the entire human race. It’s open to everybody and, for Kenzi, she doesn’t have that much to do with the sexual content in Season One but in Season Two she gets her own taste of it.

Ksenia and Kris, could you talk a bit about working on and acting opposite each other in those scenes in “Food For Thought”?
KRIS: Yeah, where you ate the soup and you were dying and Kenzi and Dyson had some nice moments together.
KSENIA: Thank you! Do you want to go first?
KRIS: Sure. I mean Ksenia and I right from the very moment when we met on the pilot, we found out that we’re half Latvian and we had immediate bond. When we finally got a chance to work together all of that stuff kind of just came right to the surface so quickly and made for some really [great scenes] . . . It’s about chemistry and we are just so lucky on this show that all of us gel together. So when we get a chance to work with each other, whether it’s with Ksenia and Anna, Ksenia and KC or myself, we just all sort of have our own little nice little niches that we work with each other. And luckily that episode really got to show what Ksenia and I can do with each other and I’m really glad we did.
KSENIA: Yeah, it was a very emotional episode for myself and we’re so lucky to have Kris on the show. I’m not trying to kiss his ass, but he knows. I tell him this every day that I think he’s so incredibly intuitive and talented and working with him, it just makes your job so much easier. Because you really are as good as your acting partner. So he really lifts us all up and I really think that he truly is one of the best Canada has to offer and we’re lucky. We’re also lucky that he’s so sexy and he takes his shirt off a lot.
KRIS: Oh my god.
KSENIA: I wish he had his shirt off all those scenes when I was dying. I’m sure it would have made me get better sooner.
KRIS: Wow, I wish I had an audio recording of this so I could play this back in my dark days.
KSENIA: I tell you every day anyway, you’re spoiled that way. [Laughter]

The development of the Bo-Dyson-Lauren triangle has been both really cool and completely unpredictable. Could maybe tease that, where that goes over the rest of the season?
ANNA: Yeah, gosh, well both of those relationships they’re brand new in Season One and they develop their own strengths and then they get challenged. I think both of those relationships get challenged in Season One. The Lauren relationship is one that I know in Episode 8, which aired a couple weeks ago, Lauren was being dishonest with Bo and that has changed their relationship for now. It definitely continues to evolve as the season goes on, but also in Season Two. And Bo and Dyson, I mean I can’t really give anything away for the season finale for Season One, but something big does happen between them. And it’s something that is going to impact Bo in a big way and Dyson in a big way in the next season. I know it’s very vague but I don’t want to give away anything.
KRIS: I couldn’t answer it any better either. Something big comes down that affects us and brings us all the way through to Season Two.

Anna, in this next episode you kind of find out that Bo may have some other powers, is there going to be more beyond that? Are the seasons go on is she going to find out that she can do other things that we don’t know about?
ANNA: Definitely. I mean I think that in Season 2, Bo starts to experience some new powers and in the next episode in Season One, you see a new power that she might be able to do. I think that’s the first time Bo realizes that there’s more to who she is and what she can do. So we definitely see that change a little bit in Season Two. Her powers are pretty new, so to her, she’s still developing them and still has a lot of surprises in store for herself.

We know Kris has an athletic background, but Anna and Ksenia, what do you guys do to prepare for your more active scenes on the show?
ANNA: Well, I try to just stay really strong and fit because that’s really what you kind of need to be able to kind of have the stamina to do the season. But then between first and second season , I worked with a martial arts trainer who does specifically fight training for movies and TV. So just trying to learn to be a little bit more grounded because I don’t have a marital arts background. And in the first season my stunt double, her favorite thing to say was, “Stop bouncing!” Because I was a little bit too bouncy for what I needed to be doing. So I learned how to stop bouncing and learned to be a little bit just more grounded and a little bit more fluid. Maybe a little more ninja and I certainly learned some sword skills as the series progresses as well so that’s something that I’ve had a lot of fun doing as well.
KSENIA: And I come from a dance background which has always helped me in any stunt work that I’ve had to do.

Is there something still that you would like to know about your character’s back-story that they haven’t at all yet talked about?
ANNA: Oh yeah.
KRIS: Good question.
ANNA: I mean I think that for Bo, I mean I had a pretty clear understanding of what her back story was before we ever started Season One and I’ve gotten to know more as the series has progressed through writers and through my own imagination. But not as much as been shown to the audience yet. So that’s something that will be shown in Season Two and certainly in Season Three. I just think it would be good for people to see a little bit more about where Bo came from and why she was the way she was at the beginning of the series, when she was pretty new to everything really. A real “fish out of water,” I guess. But I don’t know what else I’d like to know. I think that revealing things a little bit at a time is kind of the way to do it. I think that’s all Bo can handle and I think it’s better for the audience that way as well.
KRIS: With Dyson in Season 2, we get to explore a little bit of his past. There’s some flashbacks in an episode. I’d love to see a little bit more of that. I love showing the different sort of ages of that our characters have lived through. I think that brings a nice depth and breadth to the show. But I’m looking forward to, hopefully, some more back-story exposed and maybe some flashbacks.
ANNA: And you’ll get to see Kris in sexy long hair in that flashback.
KSENIA: I would love to also explore Kenzi’s childhood and her family and her family’s ties to the Russian mafia and why she ended up living alone on the streets and where she gets her kleptomaniac tendencies from and all these kind of cool things that I think we can really delve much deeper into. I would love to explore it more.

How would you describe your character in just three words?
ANNA: Oh gosh. Well I mean I can think of three. I mean they just might not be the most interesting answer, but it’s certainly truthful to who Bo is. I mean she’s strong, she’s loyal, and she’s vulnerable.
KSENIA: Kenzi is a fashionista, a thief and a very loyal friend.
KRIS: I think Dyson has got loyalty going on. He’s — I’m just going to throw in the generic old and I don’t know — damaged or just wise. No, he’s not particularly wise actually. No, I’m mixing up Season Two and Season One. I’m like in Season One, he’s – loyal, ancient and –I don’t know guys, what’s the third one for Dyson?
ANNA: Oh gosh, he’s kind of brooding. It’s always like he knows more than he ever says. He always knows more than he says. I know that’s not one word.
KSENIA: He says everything with his eyes, not through words.
ANNA: Exactly, it drives Bo crazy.
KRIS: Mute with chatty eyes. [Laughter]

What’s your favorite moment working with Rick Howland, who plays Trick?
ANNA: Working with Rick, who plays Trick, he’s such a great actor and he’s such a calming presence on set. When I do scenes with him as Bo, Bo and Trick have such a unique bond and there’s this trust that she has in him. So Rick, he embodied all of that. He’s got so much presence and I can’t really think of one specific moment but he’s just a great guy to work with.
KSENIA: Yeah, and he’s an incredibly gifted actor. Every time I do a scene with him I always have to stop and be like, “Seriously, like you’re amazing! Like how are you doing this? You’re just amazing.” And he’s a wonderful man and a wonderful friend and we really are so lucky to have him. His sense of humor is out of this world. So we all enjoy him very much and he’s a very, very special person, I love him very much.

With four more episodes from Season One to air on Syfy, what impact has the new American audience had on all of you?
KSENIA: It’s cool. Because LOST GIRL is shown all over the world, and it was showing in Australia and England before it ever aired in the States. So I think it’s just a really great addition to our audience and we’ve wanted to air in the states for a long time. So it’s been really exciting for us.
ANNA: Yeah, and there’s such an online community globally. So it was interesting to see that people from Australia and the UK and from Canada are sort of already in touch with the new fan base in the U.S. Because I’m in the US right now, I definitely feel an impact on the show. Just more people being vocal about it. People sharing online what they like about it and it’s been really pretty great.
KRIS: Yeah, absolutely. It’s such a huge audience and they tend to love this genre, Americans, and there’s been so many other successful shows down there in the sci-fi genre. And we’re so glad that we’re part of the party.
So to see more of the alluring and exciting adventures of Bo, Kenzi and Dyson in LOST GIRL, tune in Monday nights at 10PM on Syfy.

With contracts about to expire for the original cast members of GREY’S ANATOMY, I’m curious if you’ve got any insight into how Shonda Rhimes plans on ending the season? — Becca
The TV Addict: Living up to her reputation as smarter than your average showrunner, it would appear that Shonda Rhimes has cleverly found a way to keep her options opened. To that end, an upcoming episode of GREY’S ANATOMY’s will feature many of your favorite characters doing their best to make a good first impression when perspective suitors come a calling with potential job offers. And while we don’t pretend to know whether or not any of Seattle’s finest will find a permanent interest in working at, say, a hospital so small they have to fly their liver transplants to nearby Toledo, we are somewhat concerned that one of the docs may be inclined to take a second look at a certain Big Apple situated hospital that is rumored to have some of the best surgeons in the world knocking down its doors to get in.

I had no idea Tuesday night was the season finale of PARENTHOOD, is it coming back next year? — Christine
The TV Addict: It would be if I we here at theTVaddict.com had anything to say about it. Unfortunately — as evidence by the fact that PARENTHOOD’s fantastic third season was cut down to 18 episodes and ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA? actually made it to air — we have very little sway when it comes to the Peacock Network’s programming priorities. That said, we would be absolutely flabbergasted if NBC didn’t renew one of their few critically beloved hour longs, if for no other reason than amidst the Network’s myriad of problems, PARENTHOOD is perhaps the least of them.

Any SUPERNATURAL scoop? — Ash
The TV Addict: Nothing outside of the show’s penchant for entertaining titles, which sees the 20th episode if of the season being referred to as “The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo.”

Will Raj’s romantic life ever catch a break on THE BIG BANG THEORY? — Billy
The TV Addict: What fun would that be? To wit an upcoming episode will find Raj head-over-in-heels in love with a beautiful software designer named Lakshmi. So what’s the problem you ask? Well, Lakshmi’s interest in Raj is limited to that of his ability to grow a beard. Read into that what you will.

Is Will Gardner really leaving THE GOOD WIFE? — The TV Addict’s Mom
The TV Addict: No Mom (Cue the obligatory eye-roll that comes with just about any and all TV-related questions asked by friends or family members). Just because Will Gardner has been forced to take a six month leave of absence in no way means he’s exiting the show. What he will be doing though is channeling his inner-Kalinda in a future episode when he lends a hand to Alicia and Julius, who are representing a man who was injured and lost his wife in a snowmobile accident against the always sly-as-a-Michael-J-Fox Louis Canning.

Any idea as to who Zoe will end up with at the end of HART OF DIXIE’s first season? — Brenda
The TV Addict: Ideas, we’ve got plenty! But since we’re hesitant to spoil what promises to be a very turbulent HART OF DIXIE season finale, we’ll simply leave it at this: Assuming of course Zoe goes through with making her romantic intentions known to either George and/or Wade, she will do so in an electric manner that harkens back very nicely to the show’s series premiere.

As much as I love me some ONCE UPON A TIME, I’m still reeling from the death of Sheriff Graham. Are there any plans at all to bring him back? — Lisa
The TV Addict: There are, but like anything in life, there are no guarantees. Said co-creator and executive producer Adam Horowitz during a recent press event promoting the season’s final string of episodes, “To be quite honest with you, I hope so. We would like to have him back. Sometimes it is a scheduling thing that is beyond our control, but right now we are trying to move heaven-and-earth to hopefully make it happen. But I can’t promise you.” Added co-executive producer/creator Eddy Kitsis, “The character was designed for this arc. We knew coming into it. We knew that when we were picked up the air schedule was that we’d do seven episodes and then go off for a Christmas break. So we were like, “Let’s kill someone.” Because when Henry said in the beginning, “the final battle begins,” we as writers felt like if there weren’t stakes to this battle — if there weren’t casualties — people would start to think, “well, maybe it’s not that strong of a curse.” So Jamie knew when he took the role that it was only going to be for seven episodes. But when people — the reaction that they had was great for us because the other worry is that no one cares. It’s like the old, “Oh, who cares? They killed someone we don’t like.” It’s like when it’s “a shocking death this week!” and it’s waiter number four, and everyone cries, “Foul!” and goes, “that’s bullshit, that’s not a real death.” So we wanted to give a real death. No one is more upset than us, we love Jamie. Writing the Huntsman was awesome.”

Now that LOST GIRL has been officially renewed for a third season I was hoping you might be able to share a little something on what fans can expect? — Joanna
The TV Addict: Relationship melodrama galore! Which is to say, when LOST GIRL does return for its highly anticipated third season, fans can expect Bo’s romantic life to get even more complicated. Or at least that was our takeaway after our sources that let is slip that Producers have begun the search for a new series regular named Tamsin who is described as an up for anything, kick ass cop with a dark past. Also of note, actors hoping to nab what will surely be a highly coveted role on this increasingly buzzy series will have to be comfortable with simulated sex scenes with both men and woman!

Please tell me Julia (Debra Messing) is not going to rekindle her romance with Michael Swift and break up his beautiful family in the process on SMASH? — Mikey
The TV Addict: If you promise to not shoot the messenger, we’ve handily posted a promo photo from Monday’s scintillating episode just popped up in our email box.

It is not every day that you are invited into the supernatural world where a succubus is the hero. Yet Syfy’s new series LOST GIRL introduces us to Bo, a Fae creature who has to feed off other people’s life force to survive. It sounds contradictory to cheer for such a creature, but when they are as stunning and as delightful as Anna Silk portrays Bo, you cannot help but be sucked right in along with everyone else. In a recent conference call with press, Anna Silk and Ksenia Solo shared some of their favorite things about LOST GIRL and their respective characters of Bo and Kenzi.

Perhaps you could talk a little bit about the relationship between your two characters, Bo and Kenzi, and its grown and developed.
ANNA: Well, the relationship is very new to American viewers, obviously. But even in the first two episodes that you guys have seen already, Bo has spent her life on the run, afraid of her power; and when she meets Kenzi, it’s the first time she’s sort of met someone who’s human who has seen what she can do and who doesn’t run away. Kenzi kind of says, “Okay. I can see what you can do. Fine. Whatever. Like tell me more about it.” So there’s a great scene that I love in the first episode. It was our first day of shooting actually where we sit in a diner and she asks me questions about myself and I’m sort of, revealing a little bit of information, but not too much. And I think that really set the tone for where this relationship was going to go. I mean, it was like sort of an instant sisterhood, and as the series progresses that sisterhood does grow stronger and there’s definitely a family bond between them. They would do anything for each other, which is really nice. As Ksenia said, it’s nice to see two women on TV who really support each other and really, really love and care about each other. So there’s lots of places that it does go, but it’s very fun, particularly in the first season.
KSENIA: And I feel like for myself, I can only dream — like everyone in this world can only dream of having a relationship like this where they would literally die for each other without a second thought. They are there for each other no matter what evil is right in front of them. They would do, like Anna said, they really would do anything for each other, and it’s such a beautiful, refreshing relationship. It grows and Anna and I are very lucky that we really hit it off from the very first moment. It would really be hard to play this relationship on TV if we really didn’t truly care about each other and get along as well as we do. So, in terms of that, with someone that you have to spend so many hours a day with somebody, it’s basically like Anna and I are in a marriage because we’re just together all the time. So, we’re lucky that shines through and that we have that chemistry in life and on screen. It really makes the Bo/Kenzi relationship shine that much brighter I think.

Can you talk about a favorite moment or just kind of your favorite part about working on the show?
ANNA: I think the favorite part for me about working on the show is just the incredible cast and crew that I get to work with. So that’s kind of a really general answer, but that’s the truth. I mean we have such a dedicated group of people that love the show and love taking an active role in making it better all the time. So that’s a really great thing to get to go to work every day. I’ve never woken up and thought, “Oh, I don’t want to go to work.” I’ve woken up and thought I wanted to sleep another hour, but I’ve never woken up and thought I don’t want to go. And that’s just really so rewarding.
KSENIA: I think for me, a huge kind of fun aspect of it is that Anna and I get to kick some serious butt and that we have so much girl-power on this show that makes me just proud as a woman can be a part of something like that. Because you really don’t see that on TV that often and in film, and really anywhere. So I think it’s that it’s definitely very exciting.

Is there something that the both of you would like to see happen to your characters that haven’t yet? Either maybe a story line or just something you’d like to know about them?
KSENIA: Sure. Heading into Season 3 — I got to say it’s fun being the human, but it would definitely be cool to – if Kenzi maybe some kind of power. Some sort of something. I’m a little jealous that everyone gets to you know wolf-out and succubus, and do all this fun stuff sometimes. I don’t know if that would ever happen, but it would definitely be something cool to see.
ANNA: And for me, for Bo, I think that I would love to see her start to have her power fully realized. I think she’s always known that she plays a key role in the Fae world and that she’s got a lot of power, but particularly in the first season, she’s really discovering what that is, and it’s sort you know misplaced and misguided power. So we’re going into Season 3 here in Canada — we’ll start shooting in the spring — and I just think that over the course of the series, her power has become more and more fully realized, and I’d love to see it go even further in Season 3. I’d love to see her really, really understand just how powerful she is.

Are audiences going to see more of the backstory of Bo and Kenzi, before they met up in that first episode, such as will we see flashbacks to what were they doing when they were on their own?
ANNA: As Bo and Kenzi get to know each other, a lot of that stuff comes out thorough just their dialog and through what they know about each other. There’s definitely as the series progresses, particularly into Season 2, we definitely see a little bit more about each character’s history. And there might be a little flashbacks, but it definitely comes out more through you know events that happen on the show and the way that we behave because of our history. We learn more about each other, which I think is really cool because there’s a lot that they still don’t know about each other. They’ve had a whole life before they met each other — and each was sort of slightly jaded and a little dangerous. And so there’s a lot of that that comes out over the course of the series.

Does Kenzi sort of get to go off on her own adventures and maybe have her own sub-plots or even her own romantic you know relationship, and is there the promise of that in the future?
KSENIA: Oh, baby, does she ever. Yes. Definitely. We delve into Kenzi and where she comes from and even some of her family members, and a love interest definitely comes along and sweeps her off her feet. And that’s pretty much all I can say without giving too much away. But, yes, definitely. . . .We see a little bit of Kenzi’s family and not too much in Season 1, but more in Season 2 that’s when we really begin to explore that.

It’s only been two weeks since the show premiered in the U.S., but how have things changed for both of you maybe professionally? Have you noticed any kind of effect since reaching out to this U.S. audience?
ANNA: Yes. I mean, I definitely have. I have a Twitter account and a Facebook page and all that stuff, and that’s definitely gotten a lot more activity since we premiered in the US. I know the whole cast and crew was excited to have the show introduced to a whole new audience, and a really big audience. And that’s why we are really pleased to be on Syfy, because we know that the audience tends to be really responsive, and they have been very responsive. They’ve really embraced the show so far. I know it’s only been two episodes, but really I’m excited because I know what they have in store. So it’s definitely a really nice feeling.
KSENIA: And I think in a way it hasn’t even sunk in yet because we literally just wrapped. We’ve been on set nonstop, so I think you know as soon as we now get a little chance to kind of breathe and take it all in, that’s when we’ll really see the effects of the Syfy premier.

In these first two episodes, the relationships are already beginning to form, and one of the more interesting relationships in the series is kind of the relationship that Bo and Kenzi have with Rick Howland’s character, Trick. Could maybe like talk a little bit about that and how that’s going to evolve over the seasons?
ANNA: Wow. Bo meets Trick pretty early on in the show. I can’t remember if it’s exactly the same time as Kenzi or not, but Trick certainly plays a key role in our show. Played by Rick Howland, he’s fantastic, and over the course of the first two seasons, and going into the third, he’s definitely a key player in the Fae world and in Bo and Kenzi’s world. I think that Trick and Bo have a special bond, and I think it’s pretty evident. I think we see it in Episode 2 actually, which just aired in the U.S. I really can’t give away anything about it. But it’s definitely a unique bond that continues to grow for Bo and Trick.
KSENIA: I think for Kenzi, as well, he really is a father-figure. I feel like as much he is to Bo, he is to Kenzi. He is wise beyond his years and kinder I think than anybody that Bo or Kenzi have ever met. They come from such different lives, but their lives were both dangerous and scary, and they’re kind of these women, who are alone in the world. And Trick is really that father-figure that neither of them has ever had. Like Anna said, Rick Howland is just such a phenomenal actor, and we’re lucky to have him play Trick, because I really can’t imagine anybody else in the world playing that role.
ANNA: I know. And he’s such a protector and such a care-giver to both of us, on set too.

How much of your own personality do you bring into the role of Kenzi? And do you have any input in some of the great comedic lines that you get to say?
KSENIA: Yes. We have this amazing woman, her name is Michelle Lovretta, who created these characters. Kenzi — just the role is the first thing that really attracted me to this project, and our writers are really fantastic. We collaborate and we talk about everything, and we really have a say in our characters and who we are and what happens. I’m not a brilliant writer. I wish I was. So I can’t take credit for these incredibly funny lines. But, of course, I am involved and the writers listen, and I think that’s incredibly important. And I have a lot of fun. Kenzi, I look up to her. I respect her. I learn from her all the time because she’s braver than anybody I’ve ever played. Her sense of humor is out of this world and I wish I was as cool as her sometimes. But I definitely have a ball with her because I get to come in to work and I really get to play, and it’s really not that often that you get to do that. You get to just kind of go as outside-the-box as you want — and with her I can really do that, so it’s a joy for me.

Anna, you often play straight man to Kenzi’s sort of wacky nature. Is there a chance in the future we’re going to see a little bit of that in your character?
ANNA: Definitely. I mean particularly towards the end of first season and going into second season. Bo is pretty new to this world. The fact that at the beginning of the series she finds out she’s not human. She’s a succubus. She’s part of a Fae underworld. That’s a lot to take in. So she’s pretty young in terms of her life experience, particularly in this world. She’s never really had a relationship before. There’s a lot of growth for Bo, and that’s one of the things that drew me to the role is that I knew that over the course of the series there would be so much room for growth, and that’s definitely something you see. You definitely start to see Bo’s own sense of humor develop. More so in second season, but definitely over the course of the first as well because she’s getting a little bit more comfortable in that world and starting to understand her place in it. So you definitely see her start to enjoy herself a little bit more as well.
KSENIA: And for all the people that don’t have the pleasure of knowing Anna Silk, I can say that she’s actually one of the funniest people I have ever met.
ANNA: Well, thank you Ksenia!
KSENIA: So that will definitely come through and people will definitely enjoy it.

Was there a point where you just kind of had to pinch yourself to realize that not only did you have such a great chemistry, but also had a show that was a popular hit?
ANNA: Yes, definitely. I mean we knew the show was special and unique, but you never know how it’s going to resonate with an audience. And when it started to air and we started to you know be seen globally really, because of the Internet and that kind of thing, the response was huge — and there’s definitely pinch yourself moments. I always say the story — I live in Los Angeles when I’m not in Toronto shooting — and I was in a café, there were celebrities there, and someone recognized me from LOST GIRL. So I thought, “Wow.” Like that’s pretty amazing you know. People are watching the show and that was really, really cool for me.
KSENIA: And I think we’re only now starting to enjoy it in a way, because we really have been working for so long and we’ve been working hard, and consistently. We just wrapped and we’ve been working non-stop for the last nine months. So I think only now, when we get this chance to just like relax and breathe are we really seeing the effects of LOST GIRL and feeling all the fan love. Now we can finally just pay a little more attention to it because we’re not you know on set working crazy hours every day.

So what has been the biggest surprise? The thing you just weren’t expecting that struck each of you as you’ve been working on this show for the last couple of years?
KSENIA: I would have to say the fan response. I think when we shot the pilot, like Anna said, we knew we had something special on our hands. But you never know. You really never know. So, I think our fans are really the best. They’re so dedicated to the characters and committed to watching the show every week and following Kenzi and Bo and everybody, and how we grow and the storylines — and we’re really lucky to have the fans that we have. They really love us and we love them in return, and it’s really great.
ANNA: Yes. And I think that the fan response would be what I would say too, and the more specific fan response. I mean people they love the world that’s been created on LOST GIRL, and the Fae mythology and all of the richness of that world. But they really respond to the relationships on the show. So when fans write to me or ask me things on Twitter or Facebook, or at fan events, they always have really specific things that they’ve geared towards and they’ve gravitated towards. They love the Bo/Kenzi relationship. They love the love triangle. In particular, the Lauren/Bo relationship, and they have really have embraced the show and have one specific thing that they love more than anything else, and I think that’s really, really cool. We have people lining up for Trick. We have people lining up for K.C. who plays Hale. Everyone’s got their sort of favorites. And that’s really, really nice for us.

From the very first episode, all the characters are very stylishly dressed. For Ksenia, Kenzi’s character especially seems informed by her edgy sense of dress. Do Kenzi’s clothing items end up in your own closet or some of your closet items end up on your character?
KSENIA: Anne Dixon is an amazingly talented woman. What’s so cool about our show is that all of the characters really have specially created pieces, which you don’t really see that a lot in television. And, we just have an amazing team. The wardrobe on the show is kind of its own character, and especially for Kenzi. This girl that’s a huge fashionista, but has grown up on the street, and she’s a thief. Most of the stuff that she has she’s stolen and she kind of makes everything her own. She can’t afford what she would dream of wearing, so she picks up everything she can and creates things. And she’s really you know a young designer in her own rite. Anne has definitely made this show look different than any other show, and I think that really speaks for itself.
ANNA: Yes. And I think with Bo and Kenzi too, they don’t exactly have a lot of money, and where they live is not exactly the biggest palace in the world. But its sort of that thing of you don’t need money to have style. They sort of their style evolves, particularly for Bo because she sort of came from one place and sort of finds her way. And Anne Dixon has been incredible with the costuming and making things. For Bo, there’s she’s a sexual creature and there’s some curve enhancing wardrobe, and things that she can move in and fight in, and Anne’s been really incredible with that.

Bo and Kenzi are both outsiders for radically different reasons, but definitely outsiders. How did they make this incredible connection where they tend to want to protect each other. Why do you think that relationship works the way it does?
ANNA: When Kenzi sees what Bo can do and doesn’t run the other way, that’s the first thing that sort of makes Bo say, “Why aren’t you running?” “Why are you still here and why are you asking me so many questions?” So that right away sort of is this instant connection, and it does grow into a sisterly relationship and a motherly relationship as well. I mean, they really, really love each other. I don’t think either of them had the kind of family that they could express that in necessarily, so it’s really nice to see these two women on TV that are able to do that. And Kenzi gets introduced to this whole Fae world as well kind of at the same time that Bo does, because Bo didn’t realize she was a part of it. So they get to really learn together and grow together.
KSENIA: I think life is really all about timing, and I really think that Bo and Kenzi find each other at a time when they need to, and that friendship stems from this crazy set of circumstances when they meet. Bo saves Kenzi’s life and Kenzi is forever indebted to Bo. And I feel like they’re both kind of these two warriors that come from two different worlds, that they come together and become this powerhouse. Like Kenzi says in the first episode, “Batman needs his Robin.”
ANNA: And they really complement each other too. Like in terms of what their abilities. Kenzi’s definitely more street-wise than Bo. Bo’s had to be her own brand of street-wise, but Kenzi sort of has a lot more of the know-how; whereas, Bo has a lot more of the muscle, so they really do complement each other.
KSENIA: Anna’s so right. Like they learn from each other. And areas where Kenzi, doesn’t know things, Bo comes in, in areas where Bo doesn’t know things, Kenzi comes in. So they’re always complementing each other and - I’m sorry for all the analogies — but they’re like two puzzle pieces that just fit perfectly together.

How would you say that you’re the most similar to your respective characters?
ANNA: Well, I mean I definitely was drawn to Bo because I think that Bo’s greatest strength and power really comes from her vulnerability, and that’s what I identify with. That feeling of like having to stand up and fight or fight for what you believe in, or do things that might scare you. Even though you’re scared, you do them, and that’s something that I identified with. Because I’m scared a lot of the time, but I move forward and that’s something that I saw in Bo and I definitely learned from Bo because she really does have to sort of push forward and fight for what she believes in. How else are we similar? I don’t know. Ksenia, how am I similar to Bo?
KSENIA: Well, you’re both really sexy, so there is that.
ANNA: Oh, well. Oh, yes. There’s that as well. [Laughter]
KSENIA: How could you forget?! [Laughter] I would say Kenzi and I are complete opposites, but as the universal law opposites attract, so I think that’s why it works so well. And like Anna learns from Bo, I learn from Kenzi all the time. Her bravery. Her strength. I look up to that and I always wish that I could be as brave as her. I think one thing that Kenzi and I definitely both agree on is fashion. I’m a huge, huge, huge fashionista and love fashion and so does Kenzi, so that’s definitely where we bond.

Are we going to see more of Kenzi getting into the action? Are we going to see more of her kind of getting into danger and jumping in?
KSENIA: Yes. When you tell Kenzi to stay and not come into the danger, she won’t listen. So Bo can tell her all she wants to stay back — obviously Bo’s just trying to protect her — but Kenzi will never listen and will always do everything in her power to fight by Bo’s side and face whatever evil comes their way. And even though Kenzi is petrified, the beauty about her is that she’s so brave that she will you know completely ignore her fear and just go full ahead and fight for Bo and with Bo. And so yes, Kenzi will definitely be a part of the action and will be getting into her own trouble very soon.

Making its U.S. debut on Monday, January 16th, the Canadian-produced fantasy series LOST GIRL is set to lure audiences into the supernatural world of the Fae, beings that look human but which possess unique abilities that make them decidedly non-human. Some prey on humans, some which seek to protect humans, and some that do not even want to associate with humans. LOST GIRL focuses on a girl Bo, portrayed by Anna Silk, who knows she is not exactly normal, but is not certain what she is or where she fits in. Tripping across an old feud between the Light Fae and the Dark Fae, Bo’s fate hangs in the balance in the premiere episode as she is asked to fight to the death for the privilege of choosing which clan she will join. In a recent conference call with press, stars Anna Silk, Kris Holden and Zoie Palmer shared what LOST GIRL is really about and how their characters fit into this new supernatural world.

What can we expect in the first season of LOST GIRL?
ANNA: What we can expect in first season? I mean, the first season really introduces the audience to Bo and her journey — sort of going into this whole Fae world that she’s recently discovered that she’s a part of and the different people she meets along the way in that first season, really become her sort of makeshift family in this world. Lauren, played by Zoie, and Dyson, played by Kris, are two of the very interesting characters that she meets.
KRIS: From Dyson’s perspective, what we see is the ‘lost girl,’ Anna Silk playing Bo, who appears on the scene — a Fae who’s been born into a human family and didn’t know she was Fae, in this entire other world that she didn’t know existed. And my character, Dyson, is one of the ones that finds her, just because in his job in the world that’s kind of his thing. He finds not only criminals, but people who have done things that shouldn’t have done. In other words, Fae who are exposing themselves to humans. He finds Bo — and a wild crazy 13 episodes ensue.
ZOEI: Yeah, and I play Dr. Lauren Lewis. I’m the doctor to the Light Fae. There are two types of Fae. There’s the Light and the Dark. And I’m a doctor and a scientist to the Light side. And Bo comes to me for some help on how to control some of the things that are happening for her — as she sort of realizes what she is, starts to learn what she is, which is a Fae — and she comes to me to kind of see if I can perhaps help her.
ANNA: And just to expand further on, Bo did grow up thinking she was human, as Kris said, and does discover she’s Fae, but not only is she Fae, she’s actually a succubus. So it’s a pretty rude awakening really early on in the season. And it, sort of, answers a lot of questions for her. But it opens the door to many more questions, and that’s sort of what we explore in the first season is how she fits into this world and the relationships she develops along the way.

Can you give us an idea of what shows are similar to yours in tone and style and content, just to give people an idea?
ANNA: Well, we’ve often gotten the BUFFY comparison over the last few seasons. We’re well into our second season here in Canada, and we still get that comparison, which is a huge compliment. But I have to say that I really think LOST GIRL has such a unique voice. There’s a lot of darkness. There’s a lot of humor. It’s a pretty sexy show. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before on television, and it’s so, I mean the BUFFY comparison is really nice. We get TRUE BLOOD comparisons, I guess, as well, and there’s an investigative side to things as well. So I guess it’s a lot of different things all rolled into one.
ZOEI: Yeah, but those are the ones that come up I guess a lot, right, would be BUFFY and TRUE BLOOD and, in that genre of — it’s not a werewolf show or a vampire show, I should say, but we certainly get compared to anything that has that kind of feel to it.

Can you each talk about the appeal of Bo and what you love about the triangle relationship as the season evolves?
ANNA: The appeal of Bo? I mean since I play Bo, I don’t know. I think that the appeal of Bo for me when I read the initial pilot was even though she’s a succubus and she’s not human and she’s going to be thrown into this crazy world, she’s really relatable. She’s a very relatable character. She’s intensely vulnerable and also has to sort of grow and find her way, and there’s a lot of growth for her in the series. And I think that that’s sort of what I related to in her and that’s what I found appealing was that she’s strong and sexy and all of those things, but she’s scared a lot of the times and vulnerable and has to figure out things as she goes. And then the love triangle that unfolds, that gets introduced to in season one, is pretty, pretty interesting. Anyone care to comment?
ZOEI: You led us right up to the love triangle and dropped us off? The love triangle is — I mean it’s just that, isn’t it? I think that everyone who meets Bo, including Dyson and Lauren are sort of taken with her, for reasons that I don’t know — well, I mean I think Lauren is taken with her for reasons that I don’t know that she can explain entirely. And she’s obviously beautiful. You’re beautiful, Anna.
ANNA: Thank you.
ZOEI: But there’s something about her, I think that draws people into her, and I think that that’s what Lauren finds right away. And I think it’s a surprise that she feels that way, that that happens. I think she works for the Light Fae and she does her job and she’s a scientist and then along comes this sort of creature, this person, this woman who does something to her, and I don’t know that’s she kind of sure what that something is, certainly from Lauren’s side, anyway. Kris?
KRIS: I think with Dyson it’s pretty simple. . . With the mythology behind Dyson’s character, it has a lot to do with he’s a protector. The wolf’s entire job in existence was protecting its liege or its king, whoever it was assigned, and in Bo he sees an innocent but beautiful and vulnerable woman that he finds beautiful and fascinating, but also bring those instincts out in him. And there’s also some historical stuff behind Trick and Bo and Dyson that the audience will find out about that also sort of plays into this as well, but I think it’s really kind of a deep sort of seated instinct in Dyson’s want to protect Bo, and in doing so, he gets feelings for her.

Where did you look for inspiration? How far did you go into sort of Fae myths when you were first offered this job?
ANNA: Well, when I first read about it, what I thought was the original sort of description of the show was that she was this sexual creature who needs sex to survive. So, my initial thought was: “Are you kidding me?” You know, “What is this?” But then to really read what it was about and read I knew what a succubus was and it’s a pretty intriguing role to play. I mean it’s obviously a very sexual role. She’s a sexual being, but that’s kind of what is another element that makes our show stand out — and it’s a pretty fun power to have, I have to say!
KRIS: For me, I’ve always been a fan of this kind of genre. I mean I grew up reading fantasy novels, everything from “Dragon Lands” to “Eye of the World.” And so when I got a chance to jump at a role like this, I was all for it, because I grew up running through the woods by my parents farm, pretending that I was whatever, an elf.
ANNA: Everyone heard you say that, Kris.
ZOEI: You just announced that to the world now.
KRIS: I mean, you know. [Laughter]
ZOEI: I don’t have anything that even comes close to comparing, but I had never done any kind of — I didn’t watch sort of sci-fi genre type television except, I guess, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which isn’t really comparable to this show at all. So it was really new for me to be on a show like this and to play a character and, of course, I play human, so that I didn’t need to do a ton of research in terms of my own character. But it’s been a great experience, like way better than I could have ever imagined. It’s such a fun job to play on this kind of a show.

Can you talk a little bit about how the Light Fae and Dark Fae interacts, like what’s the balance between the two in the first season?
ANNA: Well, you’re right in saying that it is a really intricate political system, and there’s a lot of push and pull between the two sides. I think that, that’s the world that Bo finds herself in. Not only is she in the world of the Fae, she’s in a world that’s divided, and there’s a peace that has be kept between those sides, and that balance is really precarious. And anything could sort of tip that balance and lead to a lot of trouble. So it’s a really – it’s a really intricate system. That’s a really big part of the show that I think makes it very interesting. And it’s certainly interesting for us as actors to play in.
KRIS: Yeah, I mean, all of our characters interact with it in different ways. Dyson is an age-old member of the Light Fae. I mean I guess the differences between the two systems, to succinct is, Light Fae try to live in a symbiotic relationship with humanity, and the Dark Fae are more interested in dominating humanity. And that is pretty the philosophical difference between the two.
ANNA: Yeah, and as a Fae, you’ve got to align yourself with one side or the other. That’s just what you do.
ZOEI: That’s expected of you, yeah.
ANNA: Yeah. And that’s something that Bo has trouble with.

Is there like a clear line between what’s good and bad then? The Light Fae is good and the Dark Fae is bad?
ANNA: No, I would just say the Dark Fae is particularly bad. But it’s not about good and bad.
ZOEI: Yeah, I don’t know that there’s ever like – do we ever reference sort of good and bad? I feel like it’s sort of everyone has their reasons for their behavior sort of thing. . . But that idea that the Light Fae try to live in harmony with humans in a way that the Dark Fae doesn’t necessarily care about. I don’t think they’re necessarily concerned about that in a way that the Light Fae are — that would be the fundamental difference. I think that they both would commit acts that most of us would consider good and bad.
KRIS: Pretty atrocious. . . I think like from the human’s perspective perhaps darker, not as good, but within the Fae world, I don’t think there’s a real connotation of good and bad.
ZOEI: Right. People, they do what they have to do.
KRIS: I was just saying that all Fae need to survive off of some energy system and give, whether it’s flesh, whether it’s spirit, whether it’s anger…
ZOEI: Emotional, sexual.
KRIS: Exactly. I mean humans are the food source for all Fae. So, it just human mythology or the philosophies behind how we –
ZOEI: — how it’s done.
ANNA: And one of the main rules about being Fae is to keep the world secret from humans. So that’s another element to the show as well. There are certain humans that do know about us, you know, obviously Lauren.
ZOEI: Hello! I know.
ANNA: You know. But yeah, we’ve got to keep it secret.

Do you recall if there were there any specific challenges of shooting the pilot?
ANNA: Wow, as an actor, I’ve been very fortunate to play this role, obviously, but Bo is completely new to this world, and so she does act like the audience. She does get to learn. And as the actor, I’ve gotten to learn and grow along with her, which has been a real gift. Bo has a lot of questions, particularly in the first season and as a cast, we would get every episode in that first season and just be like, ‘Wow, there’s this new thing we’re going to learn about.’ There’s a new type of Fae, a new creature, a new challenge every episode. So shooting the pilot, I mean our original first episode was — I guess the challenges just came from getting a show up and running for one distance from that point of view and just really trying to lay the foundation for where the show would go and introduce the Fae world to Bo and to the audience. And the physical stuff is, it’s challenging. It’s fun. I mean I love doing it and it does make me feel a stronger connection to Bo, because she’s pretty tough. So I like it.

Did you have much fight training before taking on the role of Bo?
ANNA: Well, not really to be honest. . . . I did not have a lot of fight training. The worst thing to do is get Zoie and I laughing, because we never stop. So I did not have a lot of fight training, but I certainly, I prepared once I got the role, I prepared for the pilot. I worked with a trainer just to try to get really strong and ready to do whatever it was I was going to be doing. Plus, we kind of had to work out what Bo’s fighting style would be. We didn’t really know until we kind of established it over the first season. And so between a second and third season I worked with a martial artist, actually in the mornings in Griffith Park in LA, I would work with him and we would do all of this sort of really cool stick work, just to learn to be a little bit more grounded. So it’s an evolving thing for me, and it’s something that I do work hard at to make it — to make her powers grow and to make her become more and more capable as she sort of embraces her powers. So, yeah, I didn’t do a lot, but I continue to do stuff.

What kind of a journey would you say that your characters are on during this first season?
ZOEI: For Lauren, we kind of discovered that she’s indebted to the Light Fae, and specifically the leader of the Light Fae, the Ash, for some reason that we don’t know. And so, we’ve gone that journey and it’s a bit of guess why she — I mean, the fact that a human is working for the Fae at all is a bit unusual in this way. Working with the Fae would be a bit unusual. So it’s a bit of a discovery about who Lauren is and where she’s from and what her story is. And of course, the development of the relationship with Bo and the rest of the characters on the show, for Lauren anyway.
KRIS: I think for Dyson it’s the discovery and the journey of Bo. For him, he’s been in the Fae-world for a millennia and the only thing that’s really new for him is this young woman who’s come from nowhere and that’s pretty much the center of his journey.
ANNA: I think for Bo, I mean the journey is just so huge. I mean she’s coming from a world where she grew up thinking she was human and has urges beyond normal, sort of teenage sexual urges that resulted in a body count. So she’s been on the run for a while. And so the beginning of the series is when she learns that she’s not human, that she’s Fae. So that journey is just so big, and it continues to be every day every episode. Particularly in the first season, but even in the second season, she’s constantly learning. So her journey is always ongoing, very much so.

Which do you prefer working on, the sort of the mystery of the week type stories or the ones that go into the mythology?
ANNA: I kind of feel like in the first season the mystery of the week stuff sort of lent itself to learning about the mythology. I mean, I think that’s kind of how Bo and the audience learns about each different type of Fae and all the different sort of energies that are out there. But I don’t know. I mean, I feel like I can’t answer that question. I feel like both. I really like both.
KRIS: Yeah, kind of just like what Anna said, that they get intertwined so much. I enjoy the police procedural stuff, but I think for me is more of a fantasy genre, romantic. I enjoy looking into the different aspects of the Fae and because most of our Fae creatures we pull from actual human superstitious or religious or like backgrounds, I find it actually fascinating finding out about these strange, fairy creature that lived in like Chinese folklore or German folklore or I find those little characters support those little insights to that culture fascinating, and I really enjoyed learning about them on our show.
ZOEI: Yeah, I don’t know that I have a lot to add to that. I think pretty much it is. It’s true. The story of the week often has delved into the history of the Fae too. So that’s right.

Obviously there’s good things about the Fae and bad things about the Fae, but if you had the choice and you could have powers of one of them, would you want it or would you not?
ANNA: Well, yeah, I think I’d kind of like to have the power that I have on the show.
KRIS: Yeah, I’d like that too.
ANNA: I just think that it’s sort of become a part of who Bo is. So, for me, as the actor, it’s just become something that I really enjoy playing. So I think that it’s the closest one to me in terms of what I like. So yeah, I think I’d like to have that power.
KRIS: Yeah, I’d love to have, I mean Dyson’s power, sure, or are you asking which power we’d like to have? I don’t know, Vex’s would be pretty fun.
ZOEI: I always say Vex. . . Vex was pretty cool.
KRIS: Yeah, a little bit of Vex. I’m digging Dyson. I mean I’m pretty close to him right now, so I like being able to turn into an animal and live for a very long period of time. I like longevity.
ZOEI: Kris Holden — he’d like longevity.
ANNA: And Kris is already pretty wolfie, you are. You’ve got an animalistic way of moving, and it works for ay.
ZOEI: He is, yeah. It does work for you, Kris. . . I think I’d like a combo of Vex and Bo. If Vex and Bo could create one power, I don’t know what that would be specifically, but like some combination of the two of their powers. I wouldn’t mind that. Just for like for a day, I wouldn’t want to always have that power.

How much are you involved in the story writing process of the show? Do you like to give input regarding your cast part, or do you leave that part completely the writers?
ANNA: Yeah, I mean we definitely have input. Michelle Lovretta who created the show and the staff of writers we’ve had over the first and second season have, they’ve developed such rich characters, but what’s really great is that we’ve developed a relationship with them and they write to our strengths as actors, I think. And I think that they’re very open to our input, which is really crucial, because it creates a really nice dialog, and creates a better show ultimately. So we’re really lucky that it’s a pretty open door between actors and writers on our show.
ZOEI: Yeah, they’re really great about hearing our thoughts on it.
KRIS: Yeah. I mean, some of the bigger budget shows you have so many different cooks in the kitchen. You have so many different like network checks, that the actors don’t get a chance. But we actually can sit in the writers’ room, and like every time we bring our scripts in before the read-throughs, and they’re very attentive to our ideas about our characters, and it’s a real collaborative treat. And I think we’re all really enjoying it.
