Fox at TCA: Mariah Carey on EMPIRE, a One-Hour SIMPSONS and a Comedy Crossover

There were several big announcements coming out of Fox’s TCA presentation today.

First was the (almost inevitable) guest star appearance of Mariah Carey on season 3 of EMPIRE. Carey will play Kitty, “a mega-superstar who comes to Empire to collaborate with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) on an explosive new song. When the duet encounters obstacles, Kitty helps Jamal dig deep to overcome personal difficulties and reach a musical breakthrough”. Carey’s appearance airs Wednesday, October 5. Season 3 of the show premieres Wednesday, September 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox. Additional guest stars this season include Taye Diggs, Sierra McClain, rapper French Montana and music mogul Birdman, who plays himself.

Fox also announced that THE SIMPSONS will be airing its first ever one-hour episode in January 2017. In the one-hour ‘The Great Phatsby,’ featuring Emmy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson (EMPIRE) as a guest voice, “Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) tries to relive his glory days, and crosses paths with a mysterious music mogul. After being conned by him and reduced to bankruptcy, Mr. Burns seeks revenge on the music producer with the help of Homer, Bart, rapper Jazzy James (guest voice Keegan-Michael Key) and the mogul’s ex-wife, Praline (guest voice Henson). Also in the episode, Lisa (Yeardley Smith) is courted by the richest kid in town, Smithers (Shearer) begins a perilous journey and Marge (Julie Kavner) opens an obscure boutique store.”

THE SIMPSONS returns for its 28th season on Sunday, September 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. In the episode, titled “Monty Burns’ Fleeing Circus,” Springfield is burned to the ground and the Simpsons beg Mr. Burns (Shearer) to fund its rebuilding. Burns agrees – with one condition: he gets to put on a variety show at the Springfield Bowl.

Fox has also decided to do a special preview of the new comedy SON OF ZORN on Sunday, September 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT following the season’s first NFL doubleheader. The series will then premiere in its regular time period with an all-new episode Sunday, September 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Finally, the network also announced that there will be a crossover between BROOKLYN NINE-NINE and NEW GIRL this coming season. Characters from both shows will meet in back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, October 11 beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox. Additional details about the crossover will be announced.

Season 4 of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE and Season 6 of NEW GIRL premiere on Tuesday, September 20 beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox. In the season premiere of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, Jake (Andy Samberg) and Holt (Emmy Award nominee Andre Braugher) remain in Florida under the Witness Protection Program, with only one human link to their regular lives – U.S. Marshall Karen Haas (guest star Maya Rudolph). Then, on NEW GIRL. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) faces Nick (Jake Johnson) for the first time after realizing she has feelings for him, while Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) begin a frustrating hunt for their first house.

NEW GIRL Sneak Peeks: Jess Returns!

new girl

NEW GIRL is hitting a milestone this week: 100 episodes! And Zooey Deschanel is returning from maternity leave this week as Jess returns to the loft.

Fresh off the end of her jury duty, Jess returns to find Reagan preparing to vacate her room. Jess is preoccupied with discovering the real identity of a juror who was sequestered with her. Apparently she and another juror hit it off and she’s hoping for a potential romance. Meanwhile, Nick is preoccupied with the fact that it’s Reagan’s last day and he wants to leave her with a memorable impression of him. Reagan doesn’t want to make a big deal about the situation and definitely doesn’t want Nick to make things weird.

Finally, Schmidt’s fear of public dancing could impact his upcoming wedding dance, which means Winston and Cece are going to attempt to get him over his phobia.

Don’t miss the 100th episode of NEW GIRL tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox (U.S.) and CityTV (Canada).

NEW GIRL Teasers: Megan Fox Arrives

new girl

Megan Fox joins the cast as Reagan in this week’s NEW GIRL and she causes a bit of a shake up when she sublets Jess’ room for a few episodes.

Chasing the Magic. Nick’s job as a bartender attracts a lot of eligible women, but while Winston things Nick is just playing hard to get by turning them down, Nick admits that he’s just “chasing the magic”. He doesn’t want to settle for any girl — he wants to find someone that makes him feel magical. Winston eventually convinces him that chasing the magic is a fools errand and Nick agrees to stop.

Enter Reagan. Well, Nick agrees to stop until he sees the beautiful Reagan (a pharmaceutical rep) at a doctor’s office. She’s self-assured, authoritative and used to getting her way. When she tells the doctor about the horrible motel she’s been put up at for the next month by her company, Nick blurts out that they have a room she can sublet.

The Green Eyed Monster. It turns out that Nick isn’t the only one with admirers at the bar….Cece has them as well. And Schmidt is a jealous monster about the men who show her attention, especially since he hasn’t picked out a ring for her yet. Interestingly, Cece has a history with Reagan that distresses Schmidt greatly, bringing up all sorts of issues regarding trust.

A New Friend? Nick goes to great lengths to convince Reagan to sublet Jess’ room, including installing the world’s worst rain shower at her request. But between the Schmidt-Cece insanity and Nick’s overeagerness, Reagan isn’t convinced that she needs this group drama in her life and it’s up to the others to show her that being a lone wolf isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Tonight on NEW GIRL: An Unusual Request

new girl

Nick gets an unwelcome visit on this week’s NEW GIRL. His cousin and his wife are coming by the loft to ask for a handout because apparently Nick is considered “the rich one” among his family. But he’s not eager to lend them any money, so Schdmit sticks around to convince him to be strong and cheap. But it turns out that they didn’t come by to ask for money…they came by to ask Nick for his sperm so they can start a family. Nick seems more eager to give them his sperm instead of his money, but Schmidt cautions against it. And then the situation spirals completely out of control.

Meanwhile, Winston takes Cece wedding dress shopping and, not surprisingly, he’s really into it (packing whistles to help support her when she tries on a great dress). Schmidt tells her to wait until Jess gets back, but Cece is determined to get the ball rolling on the long process and doesn’t want Winston to really participate. But Cece isn’t crazy about the help she’s getting from the saleslady so Winston steps in to be her wedding dress guru. Unfortunately, the champagne that Winston brings leads to a very unfortunate “dress” situation.

NEW GIRL Sneak Peeks: What’s the Loft Like Without Jess?

new girl

Jess had been sequestered for jury duty and, as you can imagine, the apartment is going to hell in a handbasket on NEW GIRL THIS WEEK.

In the appropriately titled episode “No Girl”, one of Schmidt and Nick’s old “friends” named Todd contacts them about Schmidt’s upcoming bachelor party. Since he has access to a lot of money, Todd is suggesting a trip to Vegas. But Nick hates hanging out with Todd and wants to throw Schmidt a bachelor party on his own — without Todd’s influence or cash. So he suggests they all head to Tokyo. The only problem is that Nick can’t afford it.

He comes up with the idea to turn the loft into an airbnb to pay for the trip he’s already booked, which, as you can imagine, leads to a host of zany characters coming in to the apartment.

Meanwhile, Winston thinks that KC may be cheating on him and enlists Cece’s help on how to deal with the situation since Jess is gone.

NEW GIRL Season 5 Sneak Peeks: Cece’s Mother Arrives…But How Does She Feel About the Engagement?

new girl

The apartment is a-buzz with wedding preparations in the season premiere of NEW GIRL.

We open with a proposal…this time Schmidt is proposing that Nick act as his Best Man, while Jess is desperately waiting for Cece to ask her to act as her Maid of Honor. There’s been a few other changes in the interim, including Nick becoming a minority owner of the bar and Winston being named a local hero after saving a kid from being crushed by a car (and it’s putting him in the spotlight in a way he doesn’t like). All of this good fortune leads Jess to declare that it’s “the year of us.”

Cece’s mother (Big Mama P) is coming to town thanks to Jess, who is planning an elaborate engagement party for Cece and Schmidt (complete with Bollywood dancers). But no one seems aware that Cece’s mother doesn’t know about the engagement. And when Cece finds out that her mother is in LA, she freaks out.

But the arrival of Cece’s mother (complete with Nick botching her pick-up from the airport in hilarious fashion) is just the first in a series of catastrophes in the “year of us”. The second is Jess falling down the stairs and breaking both of her legs.

The next catastrophe comes with Cece’s mother utter disapproval in her daughter’s choice of a husband and snowballs from there.

Don’t miss the season premiere of NEW GIRL on January 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

NEW GIRL: Megan Fox Cast in Recurring Role

NEW GIRL may not be returning until midseason on Fox, but the network has already announced a piece of casting news: Megan Fox has joined the show in a recurring role for a multi-episode arc.

According to the network, Fox will play Reagan, a “gorgeous, straight-shooting pharmaceutical sales rep who comes to town on business and shakes things up in the loft when she rents out Jess’ (series star Zooey Deschanel) room while she is sequestered on jury duty”. Fox will first appear in the sixth episode of the upcoming season, scheduled to premiere in January 2016.

“It’s insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it,” said NEW GIRL executive producer Liz Meriwether.  “I’ve been a fan of her comedic skills since ‘This is 40,’ and I’m so excited to have her on the show.  We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she’s the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up.”
