In response to my recent article “Superheroes Are Dropping Like Flies! An Investigation Why Television Seems to be the Genre’s Kryptonite,” one commenter offered his opinion that superhero shows are failing because the shows are not well-written. But unlike in the movie Field of Dreams, the theory of “If you build it, they will come,” does not hold true on television. In fact, if anything, time and time again, great writing is an anathema to the average television viewer. It does not lure in more viewers and it does not guarantee a higher retention rate. Great writing is but one ingredient needed to draw and retain viewers.

Examples of ratings-challenged television shows offering superior writing include a large number of “brilliant but cancelled” shows from the past decade. Among those are: TERRIERS, BATTLESTAR GALATICA, DEADWOOD, FIREFLY, VERONICA MARS, EVERWOOD, WONDERFALLS, ELI STONE, KINGS and even fan-favorites TERMINATOR: SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and DOLLHOUSE. (If looking at the current television landscape, it also includes such current shows as the Emmy-winning MAD MEN and BREAKING BAD and newcomer FX’s JUSTIFIED. It appears that no matter how many awards or how much critical-acclaim, even those will not draw in viewers.)

What is fascinating about all these shows is that whether they were immediately heralded as “brilliantly written,” now that they are gone those are the tags we put on them. Why? Because they were. For whatever reason, the average viewer just did not see or perhaps appreciate the superior writing of these shows when they were on. It is certainly true that a small devoted and vocal bunch of viewers immediately saw and appreciated what they had — but in television, small is never better. Television shows only survive if they can pull in a large number of viewers. More viewers equals more ad revenue and thus a longer chance at longevity.

There is a reason all of these shows are now called “brilliant but cancelled” — they simply are.

But great writing just is not enough. Whatever viewers are looking for, it does not rest on the quality of writing alone. If that were true, a large portion of what is succeeding would have died a long time ago.

Instead, shows that offer comfort and familiarity succeed, like NCIS, NCIS:LA and THE MENTALIST. Those shows offer a steady stream of formulaic stories each week, but viewers flock to them. The consistency works in their favor. In addition, they offer surrogate families for viewers to visit each week. It is a winning combination of comfort and charisma.

Simply put, viewers crave “comfort food” television more than they seek out riskier fare such as MAD MEN and BREAKING BAD.

In addition, the prevalence of reality television shows perfectly illustrates how attractive and deep-rooted the mass television audience is with “voyeuristic” and competition shows. Viewers enjoy the titillation of peeking into someone else’s life and seeing what they are doing, such as TEEN MOM and JERSEY SHORE — alas, transparency into whether or not such reality TV shows are scripted, storyboarded or staged is not so clear to viewers. The average viewer also wants to see people engaged in dramatic, sensationalized competition shows such as DANCING WITH THE STARS and SURVIVOR. These types of shows offer another kind of viewing “food group” that satisfies the viewers’ cravings.

The last category is alternative scripted television. This is where shows like FRINGE, CHUCK and STARGATE: UNIVERSE consistently hover. They are not offering the “comfort food,” nor sensationalist/titillation of competitive and/or voyeuristic television shows. Instead, they are competing for the remnants of the available television audience — ones who are looking for something different, something entertaining, and, sometimes, something that will ultimately be labeled “brilliant but cancelled.”

While it is true that not every low-rated television show offers brilliant writing, it is true that most brilliantly written television shows tend to consistently pull in a lower number of viewers.

Over the years there have been anomalies as shows like THE WEST WING and LOST somehow eluded the curse of low-ratings while offering some of the best television writing ever to grace the television screen. But THE WEST WING and LOST also possessed more than one secret ingredient: they also offered large doses of “comfort food” and charisma. These were surrogate families that the mass viewing audience were more than happy to tune in to see every week.

Many have noted over the years that making a successful television show is like capturing “lightning in a bottle.” It is rare. It is extremely elusive. To gather each piece needed to launch and sustain a high-rated television show requires a remarkable number of “stars to align.” A show needs a great showrunner, fantastic directors, a phenomenal cast, brilliant writing, and a zillion other phenomenally talented crew to make it all work flawlessly.

It is not to say that the networks and studios do not try. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year trying to replicate “lightning in a bottle.” But even copycatting what has worked before is never a guarantee. Why? Because viewers are fickle. They do not always appreciate a recycling of a successful formula — sometimes they do, like with the CSI, LAW & ORDER and NCIS franchises. But other times, like with LOST and THE WEST WING, viewers tend to shy away from something they feel is a rehash of another successful show. One reason is that LOST and THE WEST WING were heavily serialized shows and once the story is done, it is done. The CSIs and LAW & ORDERs offer procedural stories — the crime of the week — and thus, it feels less like a repeat of a story already seen — and if it is, it is okay, because it is only for one episode, not 6 or 7 years.

The trick is to come up with something that will take all the key ingredients and whip up a new confection of television delights. Televisions shows require a special recipe for success — they cannot subsist on just one ingredient alone.

So in response to the edict that a television show failed because it was not written well, I remind you: there are lots of fantastically, if not brilliantly, written television shows that fail each year. If only writing alone would guarantee television viewers, then so many amazing televisions shows would still be on the air today. Alas, the average television viewer is not lured by writing. The average viewer’s taste seeks something much more elusive — a magic ingredient that is never really known.

Television success is like magic — it never feels real, but when it happens we are enchanted.

The TV Addict (left) with star Thomas Dekker on the set of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, Fall 2007

Good News: TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES is returning to the small screen. Bad News: Make that, reruns of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES are returning to the small screen, with Syfy acquiring the rights to all thirty-one episodes starting Thursday April 7 at 9PM. [Source]

Good News: Thanks to high profile pilots from J.J. Abrams (ALCATRAZ), Antoine Fuqua (EXIT STRATEGY), Joe Hill (LOCKE & KEY) and Hart Hanson (THE FINDER), Fox’s Fall sked — assuming the aforementioned pilots get picked up to series — has the potential to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. Bad News: For HUMAN TARGET, LIE TO ME and FRINGE fans. [Source]

Good News: After far too long away, EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND creator Phil Rosenthal is plotting a return to television. Bad News: Everybody, okay fine… we, do not love the idea of him eschewing his comedic genius for RANDOM FAMILY, a one hour HBO drama said to be more along the lines of THE SOPRANOS. [Source]

Before we get into discussing tonight’s DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES return, we have to ask you about your time on <strike>BEVERLY HILLS 90210</strike> TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Seeing as though we’re the type of TV viewer who has “issues” when it comes to getting over the cancelation of our favorites [Interjects Brian austin Green, "I get it, I'm the same way!"] we’d love to know if you ever had any conversations with [Executive Producer] Josh Friedman as to what would have happened had the show lived to tell the tale?
Brian Austin Green: Yeah, a lot of the next season was going to take place in the future, it was going to be in the desert and the tunnels in a manner similar to what the latest film was. And since it’s a future where John Connor doesn’t exist, the main thrust of the story would have seen him starting at the bottom and becoming the iconic John Connor that everybody knows. It would have been great, but you know what though, I feel that at least we went out on top and we have two really good seasons on Blu-ray and DVD… and it is the holidays… and people can purchase those now!

Two seasons ago you reportedly turned down an offer to join the cast of ONE TREE HILL. Understandable considering the tonal similarities between the CW series and your most famous role, that of David Silver on the original BEVERLY HILLS 90210. That said, was there any apprehension when it came to joining DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES? A show that while not as youth-oriented, certainly falls into the similar category of nighttime sudser.
No there actually wasn’t. The difference being, on a show like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, the calibre of writing and acting is so much greater than most of the things that I’ve worked on. Aside from SARAH CONNOR which was really just an amazing experience that way, HOUSEWIVES has Emmy winning actresses that are fantastic at what they do, as well as a show creator and showrunner that’s so unique in his style of writing and style of making a show that for me as an actor, it’s an invaluable set to be on. For me, if I really want to learn everything I can in all aspects and be able to move forward with it, you know, I take away as much from this shows as I did from SARAH CONNOR in completely different ways. I left SARAH CONNOR with a much better understanding within that genre of what works, what doesn’t and what’s exciting for people to see and not. But I’m getting the same thing in the complete opposite spectrum with this show. It’s dramatic, but it’s funny, it can make you laugh and make you cry within the same scene and there aren’t many shows that do that. For me it’s all practice.

That certainly explains your imdb resume which is all over the map!
My resume is completely random and all over the place because I learn from each and every one of those projects. I do short films with friends that end up on funnyordie.com, I do crazy little independent things, I have stuff all over the place, and I try to cover as much ground as I can. I don’t want to just focus on one type of character and stick to that. I did that for 10 years and that’s what I didn’t want to do with ONE TRE HILL. I felt like going to that, that show and its writing style and what it was was so reminiscent of the 90210 that I left that I really didn’t feel that I was going to be on that set gaining much that I hadn’t already gotten. And it defeated the purpose of me leaving a show after 10 years. I should have just stuck with 90210 and made a ridiculous amount of money and rode it out.

While we don’t expect you to reveal who shot Paul Young, we’re curious if you know you did it?
I don’t, and I don’t know if anybody does. What I’ve found thus far about Mr. Cherry this season is that he doesn’t like to give away too much so I will get very vague notes from him, like, “Episode 5, we’ll be seeing a lot of you!” And I’m like, what the hell does that mean Marc? And he’s like, “We’ll just be seeing a lot of you.” And it turns out to be sex scenes for entire episode and me being nude. He meant, literally, seeing a lot of me! So you don’t know, it could go in any direction and it’s fun for me not knowing because then it gives me reason to read the scripts.

Now that GLEE has made the television/musical/comedy hybrid cool again, have you given any thought to joining one of the many music-centric pilots that ABC has in development when your time on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES come to an end?
[Note: Brian Austin Green's laugh in reaction to this question may-or-may-not have had something to do with the fact that less than 24-hours after we conducted this interview, news broke that he had signed onto TBS "Wedding Band" Pilot alongside LOST's Harold Perrineau] No. I think GLEE found a certain audience that was looking for a fun show of that calibre and it works. But that’s not a show you can then copy and cover the board with. I think music and television works ever once in a while, but no, I enjoy doing music at home and going to work and acting.

And, why this TV Addict took it upon himself to brave the horde of 50,000 strong that converged upon Toronto’s Annual FanExpo over the weekend to provide fans of the show with some much needed closure. And, as luck would have it, a little hope — courtesy of the always classy and candid Dekker (Who was on hand to promote the slasher flick Laid to Rest) and was more than happy to take a few minutes to reflect upon his now infamous YouTube video, the one thing he would have changed about the series and of course, what was in store for Connor and Co. had the proverbial powers that be not put the kibosh on a third season of Sarah Connor’s Chronicles.

The TV Addict: How do you feel about being here in Toronto right now instead of the Warner Bros. lot shooting season three of the show?
Thomas Dekker: I definitely miss the show a lot. In fact, it sort of catches me off guard how much I miss the show sometimes. I really miss the people I got to work with everyday and the environment of knowing where you were working on a daily basis. And of course, the story. I loved the story and I knew where the third season was going and I thought it was just so cool. I love that Josh [Executive Producer Josh Friedman] had the balls to make everybody kind of wait, and be patient. Unfortunately I guess people really weren’t that willing to be patient.

Since you brought it up, just how cool was season three going to be?
I’ve divulged too much in the past [so I have to be careful as to not piss off Josh] but I mean it was going to be really interesting because there were questions in the future like is Sarah Connor at the age she would be in the future or is she already dead? I know which one that is, and it was the more interesting of the two to me. Plus what is she doing in the past? Also my sort of relationship with Allison and finding Cameron would play a large part in the season, do I go with the robot I know or do I go with the human that doesn’t know me? The fact that Danny Dyson became a very important part of it was also very exciting because it harkened back directly to the second film.

Has there been any talk of continuing the story in a different form, a comic book perhaps?
They’ve spoken about doing a TV movie. Well, not a TV movie, but kind of like a direct-to-DVD movie [Think: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's THE PLAN]. Obviously it’s difficult because the show is based on a movie and they just had one come out, so it’s kind of hard to make a movie with our show because everyone has kind of forgotten about us. But they’re hoping, at least when I spoke to [Producer] James Middleton that’s where they are with it.

When did you find out that TERMINATOR had been officially terminated?
Obviously we’d seen the ratings and we had an inkling about it. But it was tricky, because the show was so popular overseas. In the end, it really came down to DOLLHOUSE or us and that was sort of what happened. I think we were too expensive and DOLLHOUSE was a lot cheaper.

So pretty much your salary cost us another season?!
[Laughs] It wasn’t my salary let me tell you that much! But I think that it ultimately did come down to money.

Where were you when you found out?
I ultimately found out while I was shooting Nightmare on Elm Street, I got a text from Josh that was typically Josh, “Show’s cancelled. Call me.” And that was that.

What inspired you to take to the internet and post a video on YouTube video (see above)?
I was in Chicago doing the movie and we were shooting nightshifts. Having just woken up, I was surfing the net just to see how people were reacting to the show and I found myself really touched by videos, blogs and all these things that random people of all ages and groups had done to try and save the show. It was nice to get the affirmation that people wanted more of something we worked so hard on. So I just kind of thought it would be funny of me to ask FOX to give me my job for another year. I really just wanted to make something to let them [the fans] know that we knew they were trying and we appreciated it and appreciate them. The best part was that a lot of people though that I was drunk, stoned or f*cked up. Which tends to happen a lot of my stuff. I can assure you, I have many moments of non-sobriety but that wasn’t one of them. It’s actually really funny that I sort of come off as a crack head even though I’m not.

Looking back, to you have a favourite episode?
I’d say the bit that really just summed up the whole show to me was the ending montage of “Adam Raised a Cain,” where it’s the song that little Savannah Weaver was singing with John Henry, and they’re burying Derek and Sarah’s been arrested. i just think that that is a testament to the beauty of the show. It was a piece that was so poetic to me and one that you don’t normally see in a sci fi television vehicle. Moments like that made me very proud. And obviously I loved our last episode ‘Born to Run.”

Is there anything, be it a performance or an episode, that you would love the ability to travel back in time and change?
I wish I wasn’t so fat by the end of the season. But other than that, no. You know, I think all of us are pretty satisfied and proud. Even the episode that got kind of dissed or whatever, like the 20′s episode [Self Made Man], which was more experimental — I liked and thought it was high concept sci fi.

Garret Dillahunt is on what seems to be 15 different shows this fall, Summer [Glau] has jumped to Joss Whedon’s DOLLHOUSE, what’s next for you?
I’m doing movies right now, which is nothing against TV, but I’ve done a lot of TV and I’m really trying to branch out and I’m having a really good time with that. I did an indie called All About Evil, then Nightmare on Elm Street and next up is another indie that I start in two weeks but can’t disclose what it is yet. But it’s with a filmmaker that I’ve wanted to work with for my entire life, so I’m really excited. So yeah, I’m getting to do all this stuff, but it’s not the family like TERMINATOR. I miss the family.

Or as this TV Addict likes to call it, a trend we get behind.

Now don’t get us wrong. We’re not asking for your average run-of-the-mill Joe or Jane six-pack to go shirtless in support of his or her favorite show. Really, a trip to Subway in support of CHUCK will suffice. But imagine if you will the possibilities should Dekker’s video plea become a trend. After-all, who is going to say “No” to a shirtless Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Tamoh Penikett or Eliza Dushku? Think about it!

Yes, you heard me. SEASON Finale.

But putting aside the looming concern that last night may have been the final chronicle of Sarah Connor for a moment, this TV Addict didn’t want to pass up this opportunity to tip my hat to Josh Friedman; Who not only took what injected a complex and well thought out discussion about the very nature of humanity, religion and technology in what very easily been an excuse for FOX and Warner Bros. to milk a tired franchise with a SMALLVILLE-style killer-robot of the week. But delivered a season finale that leaves fans (or at least this TV Addict) in the unexpected position of being both satisfied and wanting more at the exact same time.

If this is indeed the end, Friedman dropped off John Connor [after two seasons on the run with Sarah and Cameron] in the midst of the resistance with enough knowledge, experience and training to ensure that he does in fact continue along his destiny to becomes humanity’s last hope for the future, fitting perfectly into the mythology laid out in the previous and upcoming fourth installment of the franchise Terminator: Salvation. I especially loved the fact that Cameron reinforced to John — during what will no doubt go down as one of the hottest and most bizarre non-sex scenes ever — that deep down inside, she wants to kill John Connor (read: robots can’t ever be trusted.)

And if FOX does the unthinkable and shock us all by granting TERMINATOR a stay of execution, Friedman has opened up an entirely new and exciting world by reuniting John with two very much alive and well Reese brothers (Derek and Kyle), a pre-Cameron Allison (from Palmdale we’re guessing), while also managing to leave things wide open for possible (surprise!) appearances by future Riley and Jessie. All the while, giving Sarah and Agent Ellison the impetus they need to work that much harder to bring down SkyNet (and in the process save John) following that unforgettable dustup at Zeira Corp.

Taking a bit of the suspense out of Coach Eric Taylor’s contract reviewal is the already announced pact between NBC and DirecTV to renew television’s best drama for two more seasons. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

1. 90210: That noise you just heard was 90210 finally getting interesting thanks to the introduction of Naomi’s new fast and furious guy candy (can we trademark that moniker?) Liam and Silver, who went from zero-to-crazy in less than sixty minutes.

2. LIFE ON MARS: As much as we’d like to applaud executive producers Josh Appelbaum, Scott Rosenberg and André Nemec for ending the American version of LIFE ON MARS on their own terms, it would help if we had a better understanding as to what exactly those terms were.

3. SUPERNATURAL: Regardless of whether you’re a “Sam Girl” or a “Dean Girl,” this TV Addict’s fairly confident that neither camp is complaining about Thursday’s seriously meta and super hilarious installment of SUPERNATURAL.

4. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: From the gut-wrenching play that lost the Dillon Panthers the State Championship in the closing seconds of the game to Tyra Collete’s heartbreaking college entrance essay, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS continues to be the best show on television nobody is watching.

5. TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: And speaking of shows nobody is watching, our kudos of the week goes to TERMINATOR show-runner Josh Friedman for not only managing to keep a lid on one of the biggest surprises of the season, but for doing what BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’s Ronald D. Moore failed to do — pull a ‘Whedon’ by killing off a major character in a minor way.

6. ER: In what we can only assume is an unfortunate sign that ER should have checked out years ago, the hour-long retrospective that aired prior to the two-hour series finale packed a far more emotional punch than the episode in itself.

7. GLEE Trailer: If “being a part of something special makes you special” GLEE stars Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele and Company are in for one helluva ride. That, and can FOX get their actor together and please release a “Don’t Stop Believin’ single on iTunes so I can stop re-playing this trailer again and again and again.
