Jumping right off the gang-plank and back into hilarious comedy, USA Network’s series PSYCH returns for its sixth season ready to rumble, in “Shawn Rescues Darth Vader.” With Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) now clued in on the relationship between fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his partner Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), the cat-and-mouse game of who-knows-what is delightful.
Also joining the season premiere is the return of Kurt Fuller as Woody the Coroner and Malcolm McDowell as a diplomat embroiled in a murder; and returning to share in the fun are the familiar faces of Shawn’s partner-in-crime Gus (Dule Hill), Shawn’s detective father Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), and Chief Vick (Kristen Nelson).

Best known for its outrageous homages to cultural icons, including fun references to films and television shows past, as PSYCH prepares for its sixth season, stars James Roday and Dule Hill chatted a bit “tongue in cheek” with the press in a recent conference call about to expect as the hysterical series about a fake psychic detective returns.

Could you talk a little about the upcoming Halloween, Indiana Jones, and Cuckoo’s Nest-inspired episodes?
JAMES: Yes, we did in fact deliver on those other ones. Those are in the can. Those are fully produced and being mixed.
DULE: We also have a “Shining” episode this year too.
JAMES: “Shining” is what you get in place of “Clue.” So we still felt like we should swing big. Halloween is the vampire episode. And I think it’s airing the week of Halloween.

Are there any special guest stars in the Halloween episode?
JAMES: Kristy Swanson, the original Buffy, and Corey Feldman, one of the Frog Brothers from “The Lost Boys,” and Tom Lenk, a regular on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER TV Series.

That’s a lot of BUFFY guest-stars.
JAMES: Yes, we went double BUFFY.
DULE: And Blacula makes a guest appearance also.
JAMES: Guest appearances, Blacula and the Vampire Lestat.

Can you talk a bit about the Indiana Jones episode and working with John Rhys-Davies?
JAMES: That episode came out really well, and it’s also the third installment of the episodes involving the Despereaux character, played by Cary Elwes. And for my money, it’s the best of the trilogy for sure and a lot of fun. And yes, John Rhys-Davies was a blast man. We didn’t get to work with him a ton but he came in and he was kind of bigger than life and sort of what you would imagine. And he was a real sweetheart.
DULE: Fun guy to work with. Full of energy.

About the “Clue” episode, is it definitely off?
JAMES: It is not off, it’s just not a part of our 6th Season. It’s still very much in the hopper and all of the key players are still committed, we just weren’t able to shoot it this season because of various scheduling conflicts. But it’s on tap for next season — knock on wood — probably the first or second episode.

Can you talk about about some of Gus’s upcoming nicknames this season?
JAMES: Oh wow.
DULE: I don’t know. Roday, what are some of the nicknames? Once they come and go, I kind of forget about them until they air.
JAMES: The only one I can remember is because I just finished watching the cut for “Shining” yesterday and we do Eddie Adams from Torrance, which I believe is a “Boogie Nights” reference.
DULE: Okay, okay. I’m kind of blanking out. I’m sorry I don’t have a better answer. I can’t remember some of the names I’ve been called this year.

What can you share about the Joey McIntyre episode?
JAMES: That was our Superhero episode. There’s like a vigilante superhero like combing the streets of Santa Barbara, cleaning them up one bad guy at a time. And it may or may not be Joey, we don’t know.

What are the possibilities of seeing the remaining members of High Top Fade Out with all the members of New Kids on the Block on the show one day?
DULE: It would be a fun PSYCH-Out. I don’t know. I mean I don’t know if that’ll ever happen. That’s a lot to ask. I think we can maybe work it out where we can get some members of High Top Fade Out and a member of New Kids on the Block all in one season. I think we can make that happen this year.

What’s your favorite PSYCH-Out that you’ve done? They all seem like so much fun, but what’s your favorite?
DULE: For myself it would be either the one we did with Joey, which because when you start involving real, you know, musicians and real singers and real artists singing their own songs with you, you can’t really top that. It would be the one that we did with Joey, and then it would be the original one that we did in the pilot, “Man in the Mirror,” because that’s kind of what started the whole machine going with the PSYCH-Outs. And that was just really just Roday and I having a lot of fun off camera. And then we got to the final shot just, “You know what, let’s put it on tape. Let’s just do it.” And it turned into this whole big PSYCH-Out phenomenon so.
JAMES: Yes, and in the spirit of doing PSYCH-Outs with the original artists, I’ll mention a drunken rendition of “Head Over Heels” that we did with Curt Smith.

What kind of nuggets do you have planned for the fans this season, like Gus’ nicknames, pineapples and such?
JAMES: Well there’s definitely some nicknames, there’s definitely some “Gus Don’t Be’s.” One that we’re particularly proud of that you’ll see in the Jennifer Lynch episode entitled Guillermo del Toro presents (“Autopsy Turvy”), which will air late in the season. So asterisk that one for a Gus Don’t Be. I don’t want to spoil it. And I believe there’s still a pineapple every episode. I think that’s just a machine that kind of takes care of itself.

What is one of your favorite nicknames from the show?
DULE: My favorite is always the original. I’m guess I’m a big fan of the original ones, like Gus “Silly-Pants” Jackson. One, because it made Gus a Jackson, you know, and I’m a big fan of the Jacksons so; and then it also caught me off guard when Roday first did it and I was like, “What did this cat just call me? Did you just call me Silly-Pants?” But that’s my favorite.

What is your favorite Season 6 pop-culture reference?
DULE: I’m going to have to like tap out on that one because I’m really blanking out on the references this year. And I don’t know if it’s just because we just finished and I kind of just dumped everything out of my mind. But as I’m going back and trying to think I cannot really come up with, just on top of my head. But that one I’m going to tap out on.
JAMES: There’s a visual reference in our vampire episode where we’re in a very strange vampire bar and we approach the bar and the bartender has his back to us and when he turns around to face us there’s a music queue and the actual casting of the bartender that comes together to create what I feel is a pretty delicious ‘80’s visual reference. So I’ll go with that.

What was it like working with William Shatner, who plays Juliet’s dad this season?
JAMES: Unbelievable.
DULE: Right.
JAMES: The man is — I mean he’s an icon obviously — but watching him work was an honor in and of itself. I mean he’s a machine. He was totally invested. And I say this is not me editorializing or exaggerating, he had the heaviest load that we’ve ever given a guest star on our show. He pretty much drives the entire episode. He had the same schedule as Dule and I, and it was just remarkable. I mean not only did he know everything, he had questions, he had thoughts, he had concerns. You know, he was modulating his performance and he really, really wanted to knock the role out of the park. And then to top it off, when the weekend came and Dule and I basically beach ourselves and recharge our batteries so that we can get back to it Monday morning, he flew to Calgary and did two live shows on Saturday and Sunday, and then flew back to Vancouver and was back at work at 6:00 am Monday morning. The man is 80 going on 20. And like I said, “It was humbling and it was a really honor just to watch him work and pick his brain and be around him.”

How did William Shatner’s character respond to Shawn? How does he take to Shawn? I imagine they locked horns a little bit.
JAMES: Well, we had some fun there because it’s kind of like, you know you can’t snow the snowman, you can’t con the King of Con, so he kind of had the ability to see right through Shawn and that made things really interesting. And then Shawn of course sort of fired back by seeing through him and calling him on all of his BS. So we had sort of an interesting game of one-upsman-ship and a little bit of a chess match going on, with the common thread of course being that they both do care very much about Juliet.

Now that Shawn has Juliet, Gus is all by himself. Is he ever going to have a longer relationship than like an episode or two?
DULE: I think we’ll have to see what happens in Season 7. But in Season 6, he makes a valiant effort to attain that. He goes for it. You know, you can’t blame Gus for trying in Season 6. He’s actually is throwing his hat into the ring and he’s out there, you know, really trying to make it happen. But we’ll see what happens going into Season 7. Maybe he’ll get past the one-episode love interest then.

We found out last season that Lassiter found out about Shawn and Juliet. How do you think that’s going to affect their relationship with him?
JAMES: You know, it’s a little touch and go out of the gates, but Lassiter himself finds love this season and I think that kind of helped cushion the blow. And it’s pretty much back to business down the stretch.

Are we going to see more development between Henry and Shawn’s relationship this season?
JAMES: I think it’s less relationship-driven and more just Henry-driven, in terms of where he is, and where he is in his life, and what he wants, and stuff like that. The season finale addresses some of that stuff. But he’s still at the police station and they’re forced to sort of work with one another on a daily basis so that’s still happening. But then I think we take it a little further with Henry towards the end of the season.

Do you think Juliet is inspiring to female viewers?
JAMES: I think Jules has come a long way. I think she was a junior detective when the show started, and Maggie looked like she had just graduated high school. And if you kind of track the evolution of that character I think it is is a little inspiring. I mean we’ve kind of watched both the actress and the role/the character kind of come of age on our show. And she’s pretty tough and she takes care of business. But she’s still very feminine and all of that is sort of in place as well. And considering that she isn’t Shawn or Gus, and isn’t at the forefront of every episode, I think it’s a nice character to cite on TV, sure.

The show has done a whole bunch of themed episodes, like the Twin Peaks episode, is there something you haven’t done yet? Is there something you really want to do that just hasn’t happened?
DULE: Well, I know Steve Franks has talked about it for a couple of seasons now and it hasn’t actually happened yet, but I hope that in Season 7 we can actually make the musical episode happen. I mean that’s how I started in the business — doing musicals — so it would be great to bring that to PSYCH and be able to sing and dance in an episode, and not just in a PSYCH-Out.
JAMES: Agreed. Yes, I think that’s kind of the pinnacle of theme episodes that we’ve yet to do. So that’s the Big Apple that hopefully we’ll be able to slice up and feed to all of our fans. You know it’s tricky, it’s not something that you could throw together. You know, other shows have tried it to varying levels of success and I think because Steve has such a love for music. His band sings our theme song, so it’s really important to him to hit a homerun with it. And I think he realizes — and I think it really hit him this past off-season — like just how much work it’s going to take to do it right and that’s why he postponed it. But I think he’s committed and I expect it to happen next season. . . . I think he knows that. And but the good news is he’s got a “game” cast and he’s got his own band and they’re songwriters – and it’s just a matter of putting in the time and you know, we should be able to execute.

This show has had so many guest stars in every single season, and this one is no different. So do you guys have any initiation rituals? How do you bring them into the PSYCH family?
DULE: We don’t have initiation rituals, we do have I guess, sendoff rituals.
JAMES: This is true.
DULE: Yes, whenever a guest star has wrapped, we always send them off with a Happy Birthday song by the PSYCH cast and crew, which I’ve got to say, “We sing pretty well.”
JAMES: It’s the one song everybody knows and we’ve been able to really start playing with some unorthodox harmonies and crescendos. I think the guest cast get down with it.
DULE: They always cry.
JAMES: There’s always that initial sort of moment of, “But wait a minute it’s not my birthday.” But then they get it.

Having spent six seasons now with Shawn and Gus, of course you know the characters extremely well. But do you ever find yourself surprised by something that has been written into the script or that either one of you bring up in improv, be it an interest of Shawn and Gus’ or a reaction, or anything else of the sort?
JAMES: I get surprised two or three times a year, when our writers come up with something for the purposes of one episode that Shawn has supposedly had as part of his character for much longer than that, like a strange way of talking or a fear of something. A lot of times we’ll just sort of invent something for the purposes of an episode as a theme. And I’m suddenly sort of thinking, “Wow, that’s odd. I didn’t have that last week.” They’ve done that to me a couple of times this season. . . all of a sudden there was an episode where Shawn has a great fear of death and doesn’t know how to deal with it, which is odd because of course we were around death every week. But it served the purposes of the one episode that it’s in, so we rolled with it.
DULE: I’m learning how to expect the unexpected when dealing with the PSYCH writers, which – so I don’t really get too surprised when things come around. But having that mentality, I mean it leaves the room wide open for the writers to do what they do and come up with all these amazing stories and roles for us to get into. So that’s kind of my motto of each season is, “Expect the unexpected.” When you have Andy Berman, Todd Harthan, Steve Franks, Saladin Patterson — all these cats all in one room — you can expect something crazy’s going to come out of there.
JAMES: Yes, as a matter of fact. Our “Shining” episode will feature a brand new, completely different rendition of the theme song.
DULE: And we do get a re-run. We get a re-run of the Boyz II Men a cappella version.

Is there anything this season that you kind of learned about yourself or just in general, since this season started?
JAMES: That it takes less takes and less stairs for me to get winded when we’re in pursuit of bad guys.
DULE: I probably learned something about — I mean I like Vancouver but the love kind of starts to fade as my seasons go on. You know, the rain gets a little worrisome.

If you could have any crossover with whatever show, which would it be?
DULE: USA Network? I would want to do WHITE COLLAR. I mean, that’s on the air right now, I would say WHITE COLLAR. A show that was off the air ? I would still go back to MONK.
JAMES: Well, if it’s any show I would say we should crossover with THE WALKING DEAD because I think we’re due for a zombie episode.
DULE: For myself I would say if it’s any show I would say, MODERN FAMILY, because I just love the show so much. And I think it would be fun to have Shawn and Gus interact with all of those characters over there.

If you could replace each other with a different actor for one episode, who would it be?
DULE: I would replace myself with Deon Richmond, who is the real “Bud,” to see if anybody noticed the difference.
JAMES: I would – for one episode — I would replace Dule with David Bowie. It would be a different take on Gus, and I would get to work with Bowie. And I wouldn’t feel bad because I’d know Dule would appreciate the time off and he would be back the next week.

Is there anything you can dish about the season finale, is it a cliffhanger?
JAMES: Yes, it is fair to say there is a shocking ending that I hope our fans will not soon forget.

On USA Network’s hit series NECESSARY ROUGHNESS following the travails of a sports therapist Dr. Dani Santino (Callie Thorne) and the out-of-control celebrities she wrangles. During a recent press call, Orlando Jones shared what it was like to play a celebrity life-coach for the show’s resident hothead Terrence King (Mehcad Brooks) and whether he hopes to be a recurring character on the show.

What type of research did you do for the character Laz and to get into the head of a life-coach?
ORLANDO: It’s funny you should ask that. I actually dated a girl many moons ago whose best friend was a life coach and I actually called her. . . I just kind of wanted to understand what the training background was for being a life coach with like a weekend seminar type thing and what it was. And also to know what kind of credentials they had and what most of her clients had been. So that was sort of my first call. And my second call was to a couple of my buddies who were professional athletes. I just wanted to see what their therapy life was like for a lot of the problems they go through adjustment to family or things going on with the team and so on and so forth. So that kind of was the gist to the research, but I got wildly different answers from the professional side.

Can you talk about working opposite Mehcad Brooks and what that was like?
ORLANDO: Mehcad is awesome. I think we are convinced that we were separated at birth. Obviously, he got more of the hormones than I did. So he’s a little bigger than me, which is usually unusual because actors are often like midgets. So it was kind of funny that the onset was I’m 6’1″ and I think he is like 6′ 2″ or 6′ 3″. Mehcad Brooks is I think wildly talented and a really fantastic actor but most importantly to me, I just think his ethic about working and sort of wanting to do everything he can to have all the elements there when you’re doing the scene are really incredible. I love the guy. I really look forward to working with him again.

Since you grew up around professional sports, what was your first impression of your character?
ORLANDO: It actually feels like a lot of times assistant coaches fulfill that role because they’re the ones often that meet the family and sort of know the dynamic of the player before the player comes in to the system. So it’s interesting how much of that and how much the guys who do what Laz does and what their perspective is. Because they all have this sort of very plenty perspective, which is ‘I’m going to go out there and hustle and I’m going to make you some money. And I’m going to make you do the right advice,’ and so on and so forth. But it’s really like, ‘You know, as long as you can put money in my pocket, I’m willing to help you. And if you can’t, I’m not.’ But they don’t see it like they’re being sort of bloodsuckers. They really see it more like somebody who’s going to fulfill this role no matter what and they are sort of doing you a service by virtue of the fact that they put a lot of money in your pocket in the process. So it’s interesting to me that professional sports has this on in its face, but it’s rarely talked about. So it was kind of exciting to me that somebody was delving into that area and talking about sort of what happens sort of off the field as work. So I think that’s most of it.

Do you have an impression as to whether Laz is more like a wizard behind the curtain pulling the strings, like he’s a puppet-master, or if he’s more like a celebrity-whisperer, somebody who kind of manipulates them a little bit?
ORLANDO: Honestly, I would say maybe a mixture of both. I don’t think that he’s much of a puppet-master because I think that Mehcad’s character — he’s already ‘behaving badly.’ He’s already the $100 million superstar of the team and that amount of money often goes to a kid who’s less than 23, 24 years old. So you’re going to expect them to behave the way they behave. So I don’t know that he’s doing that as much as he is indulging the behavior, but he’s taking a different approach. I think the best example I can give is I look at the character like this; obviously, drug use is prevalent both in professional sports and not in professional sports. I once have heard somebody say to a kid who had problems smoking weed, ‘Listen, if you’re going to do it, do it at home. Don’t go out in the street.’ And I turned around and was like, ‘Whose parents are these? This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.’ But the attitude was ‘I’d rather you do it in a controlled environment wherein I can help you if something happens or you won’t get arrested by the police, than you go do it out in the open where anybody can see you.’ And I think that’s Laz’s attitude, ‘If you’re going to behave badly, I want to show you how to behave badly in such a way that can both make us money, but also keep you a little bit out of trouble.’ So I think it’s a little self-serving and I think it’s just a skewed perspective on what his behavior is already going to be.

You are currently doing a two-episode arc, would you relish the opportunity to be a reoccurring arch-nemesis of Dr. Dani and/or Nico?
ORLANDO: Yes, I mean, I love the show. I think it could be a lot of fun to see where that goes. I mean, I think it really changes the dynamic because Dr. Dani’s approach is so clinical, it’s factual, it’s based on something. So I think anything that gives her something to play off of – and as wonderful as Callie is, I think it is great. So that comes about and it would be amazing. Had a great time in the show and it’d be fun to go back.

Is your role kind of adversarial or do you think Laz works more with Dr. Dani’s method of doing therapy?
ORLANDO: It could, frankly, it could go either way. I think the relationship, no matter what, it’s going to have some adversarial element because Laz sees the world so much differently than she does. And she’s a mom and Laz is more interacting with the players on sort of a day-to-day basis. So I think he’s going to be a pain in Nico’s butt to a certain degree. And I think the decisions and the ways that he would approach doing things are so different than Dani. I think she was absolutely questioned: is that the right move and do you want to go with that decision before you do I’?’ Whereas, I think Laz will just jump in and say, ‘Let’s just see where the chips fall.” And it think those two different approaches are always going to create some adversarial relationships.

Do you think Laz’s motivations are more altruistic, like he wants to help people or if he’s just in it for the money — more self-serving?
ORLANDO: I see it very much as both. In the research part of it, I sort of spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the middle ground is and I think Laz is genuine with the fact that he really does think he’s helping and that he is grooming T.K. So I think he’s genuine, but I do think he’s also trying altruistic at the same time. So I look at him like he’s a creature who has these massive audiences and they all love him and they believe him and then he helps his people, but he’s a creature who doesn’t believe in God. So that’s how I see it.

Could you talk a bit about how as an actor you to approach this guest role where you only have two episodes really to create a character versus a series regular character?
ORLANDO: To some degree, the approach is the same and to some degree the approach is different. Most of my career has been in the movie business where you’re going to live with whomever it is for three, four months or longer. A lot of the groundwork I think ends up being done by sort of the writers and you ultimately look at the arc of the episode and try, at least from my perspective, to view the character with as much nuance as you possibly can. And I think in some of the questions I’ve been asked already, that’s really been the challenge. I mean, it’s really easy to play Laz to me as this really sort of sleazy guy who just sort of comes in and takes advantage of T.K. I kind of feel like that’s kind of straight up the middle and on the nose and you should have seen it coming. So what I wanted to kind of get my head around when approaching something is: what’s the reality of it and what’s the best side of the worst guy? So often, when you’re doing something where you have a role, this guy is a lovely person. He’s welcoming. Well, what is he trying to hide? What’s his secret? So, I mean, ultimately I think we’re kind of binary people and there’s two of us living inside all the time that get into [conflict]. So I think the tough part is trying to manage that and then try and find the moment in the scenes that you have in order to give the character some life and some interest and nuance. So that’s generally the approach and it’s difficult primarily because it’s relegated by screen time so you try and deal with it as best you possibly can and look at each scenes and not what the objective is that’s happening in the story, but then how you can make the objective of the story a little bit more interesting than it’s going to be than if you just hit it on the nose.

Is there anything you were surprised to learn about yourself from this character? You’re playing a life coach, so did you walk away with any new life lessons?
ORLANDO: I don’t know that I have time to do that. I definitely have previously not been the biggest impression of the life coaches. I always thought of it sort of like, ‘Seriously, that’s really what you do?’ So I think I definitely gained a little bit more respect for that profession because I think that they really are trying to help people so it’s kind of positive look on people who are devoting their lives to try do better for themselves and do better for others. So that I think I gained a little bit more respect for the profession and that for me, that was because it was something I previously just made fun of.

Obviously Laz spends a lot of time with T.K., but is there a particular character on the show that you would have liked to have shared a few more scenes with?
ORLANDO: Yes. Callie and I have known each other for a while from New York, so I would have loved to interact with her more, as well as Marc Blucas’ character. I like the show very much and the characters on the show. And I certainly was working more with T.K. and Nico and Callie and I a little bit of running into each other, but for the most part, our interaction is through T.K. Out of love who have gotten through the differences in our philosophies and the differences in our approaches to working with athletes, that would have been interesting. I would love to do that.

What can you tell us about your character?
ORLANDO: Well, I definitely can’t give anything away. But let’s see. Let me think. I think he’s a bit of a dresser, I can tell you that. And I’m almost sure that he’s a Corey Hart fan. . . But, mostly, I think I’ve been dancing around the edges. So I think I’ve given you as much as I can give you without sort of blowing the episodes.

How is it working with the cast? Were they very welcoming? Are they a fun group to work with?
ORLANDO: I honestly, I have to settle a lot of guest star stuff and when you do it, you’ll never know what environment you’re walking into. This one is particularly welcoming, inviting. The cast is really, really lovely. And I don’t say that in a sort of the difficult sort of be as an actor kind of way. I mean lovely in the sense that might – you get a call after work like, ‘Hey, we’re going here. Let’s go hang out.’ . . . It’s a lot more like there’s a real family and a real sort of community happening on this show which I think as you’re seeing on screen, it’s really wonderful and it’s really special. It is not the way it generally is. . . It’s really like a theater environment and I think that part of the reason the show is so wonderful is they’re so giving and open and respectful of each other. So it’s really something special going on there.

Did you find there was instant chemistry when you started working with the cast? Or did you need a bit of time to find your footing?
ORLANDO: Well, fortunately I was in good company. Callie and I already knew each other and Marc Blucas and I already knew each other. So really the people I was mostly meeting was Mehcad and Scott. So Mehcad and I sort of immediately hit it off and Scott and I had the same experience. So it was pretty seamless. What I can say is that normally what you’re describing is what happens, you kind of show up and there’s already different kind of groups going on. But because they’re such a close-knit group already I think I kind of was pre-vetted because I already knew two of them so I kind of walked in and was like, ‘Hey, everybody. We know each other from dah, dah, dah.’ We kind of hit the ground running and really had a great time together. So I managed to jump over that hurdle this time and I think it will show up on the screen in fact. So I’m excited about that.

Athletes and actors have a lot in common I think personality wise, when you’re doing a role like this, does that make it a little easier that you’re able to kind of get a little bit in the head of T.K. and sort of know where he’s coming from?
ORLANDO: Well, I think it does to some degree. I think the trick of it is it depends on how sober they are. So I think there’s some symbolic outrageous behaviors that you hear about. I mean, there’s the great story out that Plaxico Burress shot himself, right? And then it’s all over the news that Plaxico Burress shot himself. And so what I thought was interesting about, at least the parts of that story that I heard, is that one of his teammates had go on an anniversary trip with his wife and the limo driver had held them at gun point and that it just happened a week before. So Plaxico Burress having heard that from his close friends, his teammates, was like, ‘You got robbed by a limo driver? Forget that. I’m now taking a gun.’ So he takes a gun out with him and he ends up shooting himself. So the story that we heard was the story that’s looking in some NFL player who shot himself, what an idiot. But from his perspective, it was, ‘Well, wait a second, people are getting robbed in my profession left and right, so I should carry a firearm to protect myself.’ So I think that’s what’s interesting about being able to do this kind of role and this kind of show and I think that’s what great about this show is you get to delve into the underside of what happens the day before in that guy’s life that led to the tragedy and that becomes to me more interesting than just hearing the sound bites in the tabloid story as opposed to actually hearing, for lack of a better word, what would be the ‘real story.’ So I don’t know if it’s easier because the real story generally has a lot more to do with what your hopes and your fears are and what’s going on in your head. So it doesn’t allow you to get that far ahead of this because you’re kind of delving into the truth as opposed to, ‘Oh, it is one that shot himself’ and everybody heard that.

It looks like Laz is not a welcome addition to the T.K. support team. Can you talk about the conflicts that ensue?
ORLANDO: Definitely not particularly a welcome addition, but I think primarily because he’s unknown. And I think there’s always a question when somebody says they’re a life coach, well where did you study? And where does your credentials come from? So a lot of the conflicts that ensue have to do with the fact that he is a complete and total unknown. So I would say he’s a lot more like the guy who shows up the door that you’ve never heard of before who now all of a sudden is chummy with the boss and having a impact on the outcome of your life, but you don’t like know where this person comes from. So, without giving anything away, that’s the first part of the conflict and it certainly begins to evolve from there.

Do you think Dr. Dani is skeptical about Laz being involved with T.K. in a maternal type way? Is she worried that he has some ulterior motives? Has she become that protective of T.K. or why do you think she’s so skeptical of their relationship?
ORLANDO: I think it’s three-fold. I think it is a little bit maternal because she spent some time with T.K. and I think the other is, again, what his credentials where — what is his previous experience and who are his clients and that sort of thing. And I think lastly, it’s just a little bit out of nowhere to be working with someone. I think it’s a little weird when you’re working with somebody and all of a sudden somebody else shows up and you’re no longer working with them. That’s always a little bit of like, ‘Okay, hold on. What happened? You’re doing what?’ So I think all of those things kind of come together that kind of throw her for a loop. But it’s T.K.’s decision. So she kind of has to respect that. So again we definitely interact on the show, but our interaction is sort of bordered by T.K.’s decision. And I think those are the reasons that she’s sort of uncomfortable with it.

Does Laz interact with some of the other characters, such as Matt or Nico? Are they as untrusting of Laz as Dr. Dani is or do they understand a little more about why T.K. would want a life coach?
ORLANDO: Well, I think obviously Dani has a great relationship with Nico and the staff there. So I think that in the world of professional athletes it’s like, if they have identified the person that they want you to help and then the player goes out and gets someone on their own, I think it’s sort of the same reaction, which is: who is this person? And I think their first phone call is more than likely asking her what does that mean. It puts her in an awkward position because she can’t be responsible for me, she doesn’t know me. So I think that he’s disruptive to everything surrounding T.K. the moment he shows up.

Were you excited to jump on that bandwagon and get on one of the most popular cable network? And do you hope that this will lead to a recurring role in future seasons?
ORLANDO: Yes. I mean, it could. I mean, I think it could be really great. And I think your assessment is true on a lot of levels. I mean, there’s a lot of interesting stuff happening on cable from BREAKING BAD to JUSTIFIED, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS to BURN NOTICE and the like. So I think USA Network is incredible. You know, I love the network. It’s something that I watch a lot. And I do think there’s some interesting things on [other] networks as well, don’t get me wrong. But I do think that what’s changed a lot is there isn’t a lot of interesting character stuff going on. And I think that’s unfortunately mostly true on the film side. I think that’s really where this cookie cutter is now. So I would say the real actors’ ground which is the theater which is where I’ve been the last couple of years just because it’s amazing to do eight shows a week. I’ve been looking for the right thing on cable to be honest with you for a while. But it’s about finding really what the right thing is. And it’s a tough find for me because there are some things that I think would be great to do for a couple of months. But seven years is just a long stretch sometimes. I also think that it has a lot to do with the writers that you’re going to work with, the executive producer that you’re going to work with. I had a great time when I went and did HOUSE last year. It was a lot of fun. It was a fun role and the whole nine. But again, that role is something that people are like, ‘Oh, you’re going to be recurring.’ And I was like, ‘Man, it was really great to be on this show and I loved it and it’d be nice to go back and visit but I can’t see myself doing that every week.’ This is something that’s a lot more fun. NECESSARY ROUGHNESS is more my kind of show. Not that I don’t love HOUSE but this is more in the real given how much time my family spends in professional sports. So if it’s so, it feels more like home to me. So I have to agree with you, I think the most interesting stuff in entertainment right now is happening on cable irrespective of the venue. More and more money is being spent on the future but I can’t say it’s more entertaining to watch.

Why do you think people tune in to watch Necessary Roughness?
ORLANDO: I think the show is extremely well written. I think it has, in my opinion, one of the more underrated casts on television. I think that people are sort of prone to words thrown around about ‘this person is amazing’ or ‘that person is amazing’ and so on and so forth. And I think they are sometimes true. I think that sometimes that actor has a great pedigree and people like saying good things about them. I think this cast is just really good, phenomenal work. And I think they’re doing it on a subject matter that we previously haven’t seen before which to me just grants them greater kudos. It’s just a show I think that’s compelling and people to want to see. It also humanizes a lot of the people that people think are wildly successful – who have done well for themselves financially or who reign the spotlight. I think what this does is sort of illuminates that, irrespective of what’s happening in your life or what the outcome will be. There are still formidable problems that of course we have to overcome. So that’s what this show is showing me. But I think also I think that the cast — they’re bringing some truth to that. . . I think, for me anyway, that’s reason enough to tune in because sometimes I just I kind of go, ‘Okay, that’s so ridiculous. I just don’t buy it.’ But, on this show, I really don’t need to — the people are going through what they’re going through and I enjoy it very much.

After a tumultuous fourth season where U.S. Marshal Mary McCormack found out that she was pregnant and her ex-husband was the father, the lives of Mary and her partner Marshall Mann have been teetering between the stress of the job, the colorful witnesses under their protection, and their own uncertainties about their personal and professional relationships. Taking a few minutes to chat with press are co-stars Mary McCormack and Fred Weller, who play the dynamic duo of Mary and Marshall.

What do you think is the one thing that Mary and Marshall are going to take away from this year, besides a baby?
FRED: Pregnancy sucks?
MARY: I’m so careful about giving anything away because the finale is so exciting and a lot happens. I mean, obviously in the finale my sister’s getting married. So, you know, it’s Brandi so things don’t always go according to plan. And I think [Mary] will probably she use birth control from now on. She’s learned about that in a real way. Let’s see: she’s learned AA seems to work, her mother’s still sober, which is a miracle. What else has she learned? I mean, that Marshall’s an even better friend that she thought, which is, you know, hard to believe because he’s really stepped-up with the whole pregnancy thing. And, golly, I don’t know. I mean, I think for Mary this season, one of the things that’s been fun for me this seasons is that her family has sort of not been the mess-ups that they’ve been traditionally. And so, she’s sort of had to figure out who she was when she wasn’t looking after them. And I think that’s been an interesting thing for Season 4 because for the first three seasons she’s been like bitching about how she’s the only adult in the family and she has to clean up their messes, and all of a sudden they’re sort of [all together] and she’s the hot mess. She’s the one who’s knocked up and single and they’re sort of getting on with their lives. So, that’s been the fun thing for me this season, for me and the character.
FRED: Okay, I learned stuff.
MARY: What’d you learn, pal? People want to know.
FRED: No, it’s cool. It’s fine. I think Marshall learned that, while he thought that Mary’s obstreperousness could not get any worse, he found out that there is no ceiling on it, having been with a pregnant Mary for a while. Look it up, obstreperousness, I’m talking to you, Mary.
MARY: Show off. That’s a show off. Honestly, it’s unbelievable.

It looks like that Mary might be heading towards keeping the baby. How do you feel about that?
MARY: Both ways are dramatic. I don’t actually know what they’re going to do at this stage. I really don’t. But I do know that I’m sort of excited to play it either way. I mean, I think giving a baby up for adoption would be incredible, in terms of sort of dramatic stories, and the keeping of it obviously has crazy sort of opportunities for her. I mean, the thought of her raising a child sounds fun also. So I’m not sure what they’re going to do. We will see.

Mary, how uncomfortable have you been going to work as a pregnant woman in real life?
MARY: You know, it was not easy. I’ve got to say, I think I’m pretty tough and I thought it would be easier than it was. It was really hard. I’m old too. I forget how this pregnancy game is sort of a young girl’s game. So I’m a little out of my league. It’s all right. It’s a small price to pay. I mean, it was a lesson in humility watching the episodes now. I’m like, “Wow, that’s a big back.” But, you know, you get on with it.

Can you both talk about Mary’s pregnancy did for the show and the characters?
MARY: Oh, when I knew I was pregnant? Obviously, I got pregnant sort of right before I showed up for the season, but I couldn’t really tell anyone. I told Fred of course right away, but I didn’t tell anyone else because I was afraid at my age, it’s obviously really risky. And so when I told the President of the Network and then the showrunners — we told the showrunners together — it was further along and we had to make a decision fast about what we were going to do. And Jeff Wachtel, who has such a keen sense of story and drama, he’s the President of USA, he sort of said, “You know, this is, in a weird way.” I mean we discussed first my wishes and whether I was willing to write it in and I was. And then we started talking about the pros and cons story-wise and character-wise, and he was sort of excited about it as long as I was comfortable with it. He was excited about the opportunities that it would create for Season 4, because I think shows have to [evolve]. He looks for showrunners or he looks for the creator to shake things up, because otherwise things can get pretty stale. So it timed out that it was a nice moment for something really big to happen, you know?
FRED: Yeah.
MARY: And so we all decided to do it, and then we had to move fast, story-wise. I think the writers had a 10-day hiatus already scheduled, which worked out great, because they rewrote a bunch of stories and came up with Mark being the father of the baby and what it would mean, and how it would change the shape of the season, so they had to work really fast and they did a great job.

Was the character of Mark, then that whole relationship had already been in place before you got pregnant in real life?
MARY: Oh, yeah. I know the story was planned and he was definitely coming back and we were probably going to hook-up. But it work out timing-wise that when I told everybody that I was pregnant we were like, “Geez, Louise, who could it be? Is it Faber’s? Is it?” and then we thought like, “Oh, no timing-wise maybe it works out perfect if it’s Mark’s.” So it worked out great. And it’s kind of [perfect]. I think it worked out even just story-wise because it was sort of a pure accident. There was nothing really deeper with Faber and it might have been sort of confusing. He had that wife and kids –and that was the whole thing. It just would have opened up a whole other set of really dramatic stories, whereas with Mark, it was like, “Oh!” It’s one of those things that happens in life that you just go, “Oh, my Lord.” You know, it was lighter.

When you found out they were going to write your pregnancy into the show, were you kind of hoping that Marshall would be written as the father?
MARY: No, I wasn’t.
FRED: No, I don’t think so.
MARY: It seems that we’d missed so many fun steps if that were the case. I mean, I was already really pregnant when we made that decision. So it had to be someone. I think if it had been Marshall we would have skipped so many steps and I think the audience would have felt robbed.
FRED: Yeah, it’s just – yeah, I don’t think it could happen. We’d have to hook-up episode two or three of the season, and then what?
MARY: And that hadn’t happened. I mean, we’d already shot [a number of episodes]. We were already [too far along]. Timing-wise that couldn’t have worked anyway. But I also think it would have rushed — accelerated something that’s sort of fun to draw out.
FRED: I think that Mary and Marshall should and will hook-up at some point, but it’s a little bit like the escape from GILLIGAN’S ISLAND. I mean, what comes after it is going to be tricky.
MARY: Yeah, that’s true. That’s a good reference as well.

Matt Nix of BURN NOTICE has said that romantic leads getting together only kills off a show if their only relationship-question poses whether they will hook up. So what kind of questions do you think plague Marshall and Mary’s relationship?
FRED: Wait, I’m sorry, their hooking up only kills off a show if they’re hooking-up as the only suspense?
MARY: That’s a lot of conditionals.
FRED: So the point is that our show could survive hook-up between Mary and Marshall because of what? What other questions – or other sources of mystery? Well, I think that certainly Mary’s character is [complicated]. I don’t think we’ll ever (plumb) those depths entirely. I think if Mary and Marshall hooked-up, it would not exactly be a frictionless relationship. So that would cause drama. I mean, a hook-up would have to be — I think it’s just a temporary thing that gave rise to other issues. What do you think, Mary?
MARY: No idea. It’s too big a question for me. It’s too big. I have no idea. I don’t know. I’m not good at that. That’s like a writer’s question.

Do you think there’s any possibility that Marshall is ever going to realize what his true feelings are for Mary in the show?
FRED: I don’t think Marshall is in denial about his true feelings for Mary at all. I think he’s completely aware of [how he feels]. I think he knows. I think he’s come very close to telling her. I think she probably knows too. I think he thinks that she reciprocates those feelings as much as she can. I don’t know if Mary McCormack agrees, but [that’s my take].
MARY: No, I agree with that. I think Mary Shannon is able to compartmentalize in an unhealthy way and push things out of the front of her brain and push them to the back of her brain for comfort and ease. It’s so survival. But, I think deep down [she knows].

Since Marshall’s not in denial about his feelings, how do you think he justifies his relationship with Abigail with himself?
FRED: Well, I think he’s sort of licking his wounds with her a little bit. I mean, he likes her and I think he’s surprised that he likes her. They get along. They have fun times. But I think that he knows there’s something missing. I don’t think he’s always aware of it, but I think he’s a romantic at heart and I really feel like he’s got this undeniable longing for Mary and I think that it’s always lurking there. But he’s got to move on and he’s got needs, after all, for companionship and so forth.

Do you think he feels it’s unfair to Abigail on a certain level?
MARY: Yeah? Do you ever think of that? That it’s unfair to Abigail on some level?
FRED: Yeah. Yeah. I think probably so, yeah. But, she’s young.
MARY: She’s young.
FRED: Yeah, sure. It’s complicated. It’s messy.

Is Mary as dense as she seems about Marshall’s feelings and does Marshall think she’s being dense?
MARY: Wait, I didn’t hear it. Fred, did you hear it?
FRED: She’s asking if Marshall thinks that Mary is as dense about his feelings for her as she seems, and the answer is, no. Marshall thinks that Mary is afraid of her feelings and she’s got many layers of self-defense over them.
MARY: I agree with that.

What do you think will happen to your characters if we were to visit them five years from now?
MARY: Oh my Lord, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I’m not very understanding today. I have no idea where I’d be without giving anything away.
FRED: I don’t know. We are probably still arguing.
MARY: She’s probably still in the same job, right? I mean, I imagine that’s a job that’s going to stick. She likes that job.
FRED: Arguing about different stuff. Probably having hooked-up and moved on to other people. Marshall’s trying to keep her from making her child a total wreck.
MARY: You’re implying though that I keep the child.
FRED: I don’t know what happens next season anymore than anybody else does. I want just want to make that clear right now. I have no idea what happens.

What are you looking forward to with Marshall in the future? What would you like to see him do or get into?
FRED: Well, I’d like to see him get into some kind of romantic relationship with Mary, but not something that’s too cozy or long lived. I just feel like it’s got to happen at some point . . . . I don’t want to jump to shark. I mean, I think that the more drama would ensue as a result of that. They’re certainly not going to start getting along better than they do now, which is pretty questionable already, you know what I mean? And there’s plenty of room for conflict and trouble.

Aside from each other, can you tell us about another IN PLAIN SIGHT cast member who you really enjoy working with and who really inspired you this season?
FRED: Well, in terms of regulars, I think Mary will agree with Paul Ben-Victor is
just astonishing to watch. He’s a great actor and he’s just really lovable funny and he’s amazing.
MARY: Yeah, we love PBV.
FRED: In terms of guests, I like Maury Sterling who made a second appearance, I think based on the quality of his first appearance. Right, Mary?
MARY: I think it was planned all along.
FRED: Oh, it was?
MARY: Yeah, It was planned all along to have character come back, but I think he came back in a much bigger way, because Maury was so good, you know? And actually, I mean, I’ve heard rumblings of maybe he surfaces again just because everyone enjoyed him so much, so who knows.
FRED: He’s funny.
MARY: He is really funny.
FRED: And then Bryan Callen’s great too.
MARY: Yeah, and fun to work with.

Mary, just in general how do you think of the average woman watching IN PLAIN SIGHT this season can relate to your character, and in what ways do you think that she’s an inspiration to women?
MARY: Well, I mean I think part of the reasons she’s always been appealing to women is that women know the truth. We are grouchier and meaner and more judgmental than I think we’ve been allowed to be portrayed over the years. . . I think it’s just sort of been our secret for a long time. So it makes sense that there’s something cathartic watching a woman say what she’s feels and be ambitious and angry and sort of grouchy once in a while. Because I think we are that way. So, I think that’s probably why.

Fred, you spew out so many interesting details on this show, what have you learned?
FRED: Oh, gosh.
MARY: You mean about all of his trivia?
FRED: No, some of it’s me. I mean, occasionally.
MARY: You can tell, yeah.
FRED: You know, like the fact that there’s a layer of porcelain and (conk) shells is me, but anything medical science involving giving myself a tracheotomy, or whatever that was on Season 1, that’s something I’m Googling right then and there. And I did learn a few terms that I remember for a few days, but it’s gone now.
MARY: Fred’s a big reader. A lot of the times the literary quotes and stuff is your ideas.
FRED: Yeah, like the humanity stuff, the literature stuff.
MARY: The writers are really sweet about being collaborative and Fred will often say — and you know we had different showrunners come through — so they’re very of Fred’s sense of Marshall. Because Fred and I talk about this a lot, but it’s a really sort of a tightrope, his character. He can’t just be filled with . I don’t know, how would you describe it, Fred? I mean, it’s not that he’s just nerdy.
FRED: No, he’s can’t go to that cliché. I mean, he’s a complicated guy. He’s very curious and he’s interested in everything.
MARY: Right. But, they’ve been very sweet about it. I mean, if Fred has an idea — like I think he would have read a lot of this guy or if he has a better idea for a line — they’re really collaborative, which I think is great.

In a DVD commentary Fred mentioned that you and Mary argued over shooting a particular scene. What kind of things do you typically argue over?
MARY: Do we argue, Fred? We’ve never had an argument while we’re shooting a scene, did we?
FRED: No, I think for the most part we are in [complete harmony].
MARY: When did we argue over a scene?
FRED: I don’t know. I think at some point you mentioned during a commentary some argument or other/
MARY: Oh.
FRED: No, there are many times when Mary is callus and unfeeling and –
MARY: Mary, the character?
FRED: No, Mary McCormack, who really makes Mary Shannon look like a sensitive woman probably.
MARY: He’s evil. Seem warm and cuddly? Oh, dear.
FRED: She’s a [challenging woman].
MARY: This is not fair. I don’t like where this is going. [laughter]

*** SPOILER ALERT ****

What do you feel about Brandi running away like that in the finale?
MARY: Well, I loved it. I thought it was such a great. I thought it was so great because it’s just because Nichole’s so good at playing that stuff. I thought she did a great job in the scene. And like people say, it’s hard to escape your nature. So I think that was a really nice scene. I love it. I loved (that scene because that was that).
FRED: I was just saying it’s harder to escape your nature, especially when your nature’s kind of crucial to the dynamic of the show.
MARY: Yeah, that’s true too. That helps us out. But also, it’s a show. It’s nice. It’s just a nice development. In the finale, you look for opportunities to make people come back and you look for opportunities of a cliffhanger without things being cheeseball. So I think that it added to the whole drama of what’s going to happen next season and what does that mean for Peter? And I just think it’s a great bit of writing of cliffhanger quality.

For fans and avid television viewers, this summer has offered an abundance of riches. From the break-out alien sensation FALLING SKIES to the addictive TEEN WOLF to teenage crushes on THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING to the creepy medical mysteries of TORCHWOOD, no matter what one could possibly be looking for, this summer had it on TV. It is said that ‘it is good to be king.’ But on TV, it is better to be the most talked about summer hits of the season. The following is a quick round up of shows that you may already be watching, but if you have not yet discovered these shows, you are invited to check them out and become as enamored as everyone else.

SUNDAY
Sunday nights have been brutal for viewers with no less than eight competing shows: FALLING SKIES, LEVERAGE, DROP DEAD DIVA, TRUE BLOOD, IN PLAIN SIGHT, THE PROTECTOR (which just moved to Mondays), THE GLADES, BREAKING BAD and AGAINST THE WALL. Factoring in that THE KILLING and GAME OF THRONES were also around for early summer, Sundays were a tough night to figure out what to watch and when. Fortunately, many of these shows repeated frequently throughout the week to allow viewers a chance to catch anything they may have missed.

But the standout was newcomer FALLING SKIES, which took the entire globe by storm and become a summer sensation. With its trio of deadly aliens (the Skitters, the Mechs and the tall skinny freaks), Sundays were simply owned by FALLING SKIES. Everyone wanted to see what was truly lurking beneath the surface and whether the survivors of the 2nd Mass had a chance in hell of ever fighting back. With the 2-hour season finale scheduled to air this Sunday, August 7th and a rumored massive cliff-hanger, perhaps not all mysteries will be nicely tied up with a bow, but the good news is that FALLING SKIES will be back for its 2nd season next summer. So don’t miss the season finale which promises an epic battle and revelations that will send our minds reeling until next summer.

MONDAY
Even more brutal than the jam-packed Sunday nights, Monday nights offered eleven competing shows all scrambling to capture a share of the viewers. Tossed into the timeslot ring were: TEEN WOLF, EUREKA, WAREHOUSE 13, ALPHAS, THE CLOSER, RIZZOLI & ISLES, WEEDS, THE BIG C, THE PROTECTOR (it’s new night), SECRET LIFE OF AN AMERICAN TEENAGER and SWITCHED AT BIRTH. It was nearly a blood-bath as viewers were forced to choose and unlike the Sunday night shows, these shows did not repeat so conveniently throughout the week. Returning favorites THE CLOSER, RIZZOLI & ISLES, EUREKA, WAREHOUSE 13, and SECRET LIFE all held their own and recaptured their audiences. What was astounding was that newcomers such as TEEN WOLF, ALPHAS and SWITCHED AT BIRTH were out of the gate successes and they too snagged a healthy portion of the viewing audience. With a second season pick-up already announced for TEEN WOLF and an unprecedented order of 30 episodes for the 1st season of SWITCHED AT BIRTH, their respective networks were clearly pleased as well. With ALPHAS holding onto the same audience that tunes in for EUREKA and WAREHOUSE 13, next season orders for all three are just about guaranteed. The breakout hit for Monday nights is a tie between the supernatural thriller TEEN WOLF and ABC Family’s family heart-warmer SWITCHED AT BIRTH. Both offered something vital to viewers seeking comfort TV: a family they wanted to be a part of.

While a teenage werewolf transition tale does not exactly scream “family” – TEEN WOLF did offer a wonderful surrogate family through young Scott’s friends. Whether it was the lovely Allison, who stole his heart with love-at-first-sight, the best friend Stiles who knows how to quip a handy one-liner in a stressful moment, the ultra-competitive quasi-evil duo of Lydia and Jackson, or the muscle-bound, yet with a heart-of-gold Derek, teens were not the only ones cozying up to the young group of teens fighting to survive while hunted from all sides.

In addition, SWITCHED AT BIRTH offered the most heart-breaking storyline couched in a warm, sunny world where two families chose to live together after discovering their daughters were switched at birth 16 years ago. It was not just the “blue sky” appeal of the show that caught our attention, but rather the equally addictive and appealing characters that invited us into their homes. From Bay to Daphne to Toby, Emmett, Liam and Ty, and all the charming parents, SWITCHED AT BIRTH introduced us to families and friends that we would all love to be a part of.

TUESDAY
Tuesday nights, while somewhat less time-constrained, were also busy nights on TV. Competing were: WHITE COLLAR, COVERT AFFAIRS, MEMPHIS BEAT, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING, COMBAT HOSPITAL, and MTV’s AWKWARD. With 7 shows clamoring for attention, it was a little easier to juggle shows and watch them all, but it required some viewer dexterity. Returning favorites WHITE COLLAR, COVERT AFFAIRS, MEMPHIS BEAT, and PRETTY LITTLE LIARS all fared well, but the newcomers stumbled under the weight of the stiff competition.

Viewers were less likely to sample the new shows on Tuesday nights than other nights of the week — which is a shame, cause each of the new series had something special to offer and are worthy of second seasons. For the teenage crowd, both THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING and MTV’s AWKWARD offered heaping spoonfuls of heart-melting romance. Only the heartless could have withstood such wonderfully woven tales of teenage angst and teenage romance mixed with fun doses of comedic relief. Then over on the darker side, there was COMBAT HOSPITAL which gave a glimpse into the world of medical surgeons in the war zone of Afghanistan. But it only sounded dark and depressing. The actual show had a nice mix of odd personalities and heart-warming messages. Plus, one look into Michelle Borth’s soulful eyes and you too would be caught up in the day-to-day struggles of life on the front lines. To viewers who tuned in and tuned out too quickly and those who have resisted these fine shows, it’s your loss. For those who discovered and stuck with these shows, you know what I’m talking about when I say, these are must-see shows on Tuesday nights.

As for the break-out hit of Tuesday nights, it goes once again to COVERT AFFAIRS. Not even breaking stride from its first season break-neck pace, COVERT AFFAIRS took things to another level of action, globe-trotting and giving fans exactly what they want – more Auggie! Piper Perabo’s Anne Walker may be the star of the show, but Chris Gorham’s Auggie Anderson stole all the hearts of the fans. Kudos for all the hard work and inspired stories this season. It’s been a fun and wild-ride!

WEDNESDAY
A night of much more manageable TV viewing, Wednesday offered a nice light night of only six competition shows: ROYAL PAINS, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, FRANKLIN & BASH, MELISSA & JOEY, STATE OF GEORGIA and HAPPILY DIVORCED. It was a night that also relied heavily on comedy to ease the weekly tensions as viewers found themselves mid-week and flagging a bit at the thought of two more work days. Despite the prevalence of comedy and the quick success of HAPPILY DIVORCED, which has already been picked up for a second season, the show that was the break-out success was newcomer NECESSARY ROUGHNESS.

A tale of a therapist swept up into the high-stakes world of competitive sports, viewers latched onto Dr. Dani’s unique brand of therapy and her adrenaline-junkie clientele. It also helped that the one client threaded throughout the season was charismatic Mehcad Brooks who stole scenes any chance he got and made us think of out-of-control football stars as great people to have hanging around the house. The addictive trio of the unorthodox Dr. Dani, the mysterious fixer Nico and the hot-headed, but heart-warming T.K. made NECESSARY ROUGHNESS the break-out show of Wednesday nights.

THURSDAY
As the week wound down, it was a night of easy delights as BURN NOTICE, ROOKIE BLUE and newcomer SUITS dazzled fans with their own blend of amped-up drama. Whether it was explosions, gun-fights, cheating boyfriends, or a con man turned wanna-be-lawyer, Thursdays had exactly what viewers wanted as they raced towards the end of the work week – pure, unadulterated, octane-fueled adrenaline rushes.

SUITS does not exactly sound like a show for which a word like adrenaline would be associated, but it’s tight-wire act teasing us with whether Mike and Harvey’s high-stakes game of the ultimate con be found out kept viewers breathless with anticipation. While both BURN NOTICE and ROOKIE BLUE brought their A-game this season, SUITS stole the night. It was impossible to not fall for the charming handsome duo of Mike and Harvey and their new take on a legal drama can be wicked fun. Another show that if you haven’t checked it out yet, be prepared to fall in love!

FRIDAY
Also an easy night of TV, with the sci-fi faves TORCHWOOD and HAVEN facing off and as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS wound down its final season, Fridays were a delicious treat for world-weary TV viewers. Real life can suck the life right out of you by Friday, so it takes special shows to infuse a bit of life back into viewers before they tackle their unruly weekends. Fortunately, as the Emmy nominations proved, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS was exactly what viewers were in the mood for and it was a great way to say goodbye to a show that created a world that felt like a second home for most of us. To this day, there are many savvy TV critics who still believe that there simply must be a real Coach Taylor and his wife Tammy living in a small town in Texas. It felt that real and that special of a place. Pray the Emmy voters get it right this year and crown FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS the best drama on TV. It earned it.

So while FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS felt like home, the worlds of TORCHWOOD and HAVEN were nothing like any place we would ever dream of living. Frankly, both those worlds scared the beegeebizes out of us. TORCHWOOD’s “miracle day” where everyone on earth stops dying, only to find out that is a fate worse than death; and HAVEN’s isolated world where an entire town is plagued by a curse that makes them all wish they lived somewhere else – those were not exactly the places anyone wants to willingly go to. Yet, funny enough, viewers still flocked to them. Watching others suffer and endure mysterious torment is oddly appealing. But, more likely, it was the captivating characters that kept viewers tuning in. Without the magic and mystery of the relationships between Audrey, Duke and Nathan on HAVEN, and the star-crossed lovers Jack and Gwen on TORCHWOOD, surely the horror stories of each show would not have been enough. But throw in a few people that fans are dying to see more of and you’ve got a Friday night hit. So sci-fi Fridays are alive and well and we can’t wait to see where these gripping shows take us. Don’t miss another second and be sure to tune in for both TORCHWOOD and HAVEN on Fridays – they offer an adventure like you have never seen before!

SATURDAY
No matter how you look at it, Saturday nights are the slowest night of TV. Other than the occasional Syfy or Hallmark movie of the week, the only network dipping its toe into Saturday night programming is BBC America, which offered both DOCTOR WHO and OUTCASTS on Saturday nights this summer. DOCTOR WHO teased fans by starting the summer, then going on a short hiatus, and then will return on August 27th to finish off its 6th season. This was a double-edged sword of disappointment as fans were outraged to have the mid-season interruption just when the show was picking up steam and left everyone shell-shocked over the identity of River Song, and that it was replaced by a show that was already announced to only extend one short season. So OUTCASTS already had a death-knell hanging over it and DOCTOR WHO fans were chomping impatiently at the bit to get their show back. The clear winner of Saturdays was DOCTOR WHO – and its tale is not over yet. With its next episode entitled, “Let’s Kill Hitler” and knowing perfectly well the mystery of River Song is nowhere near being concluded, DOCTOR WHO promises to recapture hearts and imaginations all over again. Is it August 27th yet????

Summer viewing has been long mistaken as a time that dead shows come to die and new shows come to debut to less competition. While both those premises may be true, for the television connoisseur, it is a time of discovery and a chance to embrace and celebrate shows that would be overshadowed the rest of the year. For the summer of 2011, it was like opening up a treasure chest with each piece more dazzling and delightful than the last. So I invite you to savor these last few weeks of summer TV and appreciate the final episodes of the season. Summer of 2011 was simply spectacular!

From the casting couch to the therapy couch, Mehcad Brooks analyzes what it takes to succeed both on screen and off screen. Starring as TK, the football quarterback with a hot temper and an unexpected heart of gold, and a soft-spot for his therapist’s family, Mehcad shared in a recent press call what he sees in TK’s soul.

Can you talk about how you became involved with the series NECESSARY ROUGHNESS?
MEHCAD: Yes, I was in Toronto and I got a phone call and a script and (my agent) said, ‘Listen, we’d like you to read this.’ I was really heartbroken after MY GENERATION was cancelled, and I just kind of sworn off television. But when I read the script I was like, ‘Wait a second. Maybe I spoke too soon.’ I was really drawn to the project because Terrence had so many levels to him. And I thought, you TK was really endearing; also flamboyant and boisterous, but at the same time, I thought, ‘I think he’s a really misunderstood kid.’ And that’s something I was wanting because that’s kind of what I consider myself a very child-like person, but not childish. So I understand that. But he hasn’t quite gotten to that level yet. But, I was kind of routing for him. So it really drew me to him.

What’s your favorite part about playing the role of TK?
MEHCAD: Anything goes. Anything goes. I mean it’s the producers’, writers’ and the director’s job to kind of reel me back in. So that’s a lot of fun — a lot of fun.

What is it like working with Callie Thorne? Can you talk about working with her?
MEHCAD: Callie and I are like kindred spirits. That’s the amazing thing. Callie, she packs a huge punch in a very tiny little package. But she has this sort of intoxicating energy about her. If she’s smiling, you’re smiling. If she gets angry, you get fearful. When she means business, you have to step up to the plate and mean business too. She’s one of my favorite actors in the world, period. And it’s an honor to be working with her. It really is. I learn so much just by watching her.

What else are we going to see with TK as far as his journey with his character? We’ve already seen little bits, and he definitely has issues he’s working through. Is there going to be a romantic interests or anything else like that with him?
MEHCAD: It’s going to run the gamut. I mean, I’m not sure how much I can reveal. I’ll give you little hints here and there. But it always gets worse before it gets better. There’s that as an issue. We’re taking advantage of having a superstar and being able to take an introspective look into his life and some of the things that come along with that, whether they’re funny or scary or timely or topical. TK is going to go through a lot of it. And the thing about TK is — as you guys have probably seen — he really hasn’t met a real woman in his life except for Dr. Dani. So, if and when that does happen, that’s going to be a very sort of comical and sad circumstance. But I believe it’s in the cards for sure.

How do you relate to your character of TK?
MEHCAD: I’m pretty much the antithesis of TK — and that’s kind of why I like playing him because he’s so different. I get to go to work and just sort of release a bunch of energy and a bunch of anxiety and a bunch of insanity. And when I come home I’m completely different. I think I’m channeling a part of myself from my early 20s. Because we all have those days where — at least men — we all have those days where we do act as pigs, especially in our early 20s. We have this attitude that we’re invincible. We have this attitude that nothing can stop us. And just the problem is, most of us don’t have 80 million bucks when we’re doing it. So it’s kind of an interesting role to play, but he and I are completely different. I wouldn’t even want to hang out with him — honestly.

What kind of romantic interests do you see for TK in the future? Any dream actresses you want on there?
MEHCAD: Halle Berry. There’s no actress that comes to mind in particular that I would like to play a love interest with TK, but definitely — like I said before — it’s definitely in the cards. And I have a lot of faith in the writers. I think it’s going to be a fun ride.

Are we going see more into TK’s past as the series goes on? Will we see flashbacks of TK’s past to see how it shaped him into who he is today?
MEHCAD: I don’t think so. But you know what? That’s a really cool idea. Maybe I’ll bring it up.

What aspect of the show is the most entertaining for you? Is there something about it that you think makes it easy for audiences to connect with?
MEHCAD: The aspect that really sticks out in the project for me is that it’s the most fun I’ve ever had shooting anything. And I really kind of feel like if we’re having fun. I’m of the school of thought that people love to watch other people have a good time. And if you’re having a great time and you’re performing it, I really see how people can watch you and have a great time. So that’s our little secret. We’re just having a blast. We’re just a bunch of actors coming to work, being able to do great material and who really respect and have an affinity for each other. We are in love [with the show] and we support each other and we just have a blast — and I think it’s evident when it comes on screen.

How do you usually spend your time between scenes?
MEHCAD: If it’s not [too hot] — because we shoot in Atlanta — so if it’s not too hot, we’ll stick around and hang out and talk and just make jokes. I mean I came back to the makeup trailer one day and the entire makeup trailer was plastered with my Calvin Klein photos that Callie and the makeup department had done as a joke. So I went around kind of like drawing little faces on them and cutting off Scott Cohen’s head and pasting them on top of my face, because he had a couple of things to say about it. So we took a picture of him and unbeknownst to him, we blew it up to — I don’t know — probably 5 by 3 feet. And it looks like this old, trying to be sexy 1936 picture, like Clark Gable at the background of the movies. And we hung it in front of the makeup trailer, so when we came in, it hit him in the face. So we just have a good time. We play jokes on each other. We respect each other. We hang out. It’s fun. It’s a lot of fun.

Since you’re an athlete yourself, what did you draw upon to get into the head of TK?
MEHCAD: That’s a good question. We have a wonderful sports director here on set. His name is Mark Ellis. I’ve worked with him before. So we had a preexisting relationship. So that wasn’t too difficult. He held a football camp before the pilot, which I attended. And it’s that competitive nature as an athlete. It never leaves you. You actually learn as a small child playing in athletics or being involved in athletics and growing up through high school, being involved in athletics you learn to work with people that you probably never would, in any other circumstance. That’s what life is about, working with people from all walks of life, working with people that you may not like, working with people who you have to respect for what they do. So those are the lessons that I think can cross-pollinate in anything we do, but also the competitive nature of it. TK is such a winner. He doesn’t take losing very lightly — and I can understand that. I can completely understand what it’s like to really believe in your heart and any manifestations that losing is not an option. He and I just go about it in different ways.

Can you talk about what it’s like to work opposite Gregory Alan Williams?
MEHCAD: Oh, he’s great. He’s awesome. I laugh because that was the first time that I received that question. But it shouldn’t be because he’s a fantastic actor, very underrated — he’s a fireball of energy. It’s like he doesn’t stop. It’s like he’ll call, ‘Cut’ and he’ll start doing a monologue on something else. Then he’ll tell you a story about what actors call war-stories – ‘and this happened in this city when I was shooting this’ and so on and so forth. He’s also very well educated and well-versed in a lot of the different arenas. So he’s a very interesting character to talk to. So he’s a blessing.

Since the show is based on the true story of the New York Jets’ psychologist, how does that help?
MEHCAD: The thing that helps, at least for me in particular, is that I know Dr. Donna Dannenfelser, who is the actual therapist that this is based on. I don’t just know her. She’s actually my therapist. But I’m kind of a kid who’s doing the homework in class, because I probably should have done this beforehand. But really, I got into a bad car accident here in Atlanta and I was sitting at a stop light and somebody hit me going 60 miles an hour, head on. So it was really nothing I could do. I’m lucky to be alive, to tell you the truth. But there’s the traumatic aspect of the whole thing and I wanted someone to talk to. And I trust her and she’s really good at what she does. So I have a lot of insight into how this whole thing works. And I have personal experience with how it works and I wake up every day and I thank my lucky stars for her as well. It’s crazy because it’s like you would say that for the people that this is really based on and all the actors, we’re their family.

You talked about ‘it has to get worse before it can get better,’ so I’m wondering does that mean — that we see TK spinning a little bit more dramatically and hitting bottom and what that looks like for him?
MEHCAD: Well keep in mind that it’s USA [Network] — so it’s not going to be an HBO crash and burn. The thing is talent can take you to the top. The character keeps you there. And I think the issue is TK has to build his character. I can’t tell you exactly what that looks like yet because it’s not completely finished and polished with the writing, as far as that goes. Also, I don’t know how I’m going to perform it because I do have the freedom to do, like I said, to take a lot of liberties and they pulled me back a lot of times. And sometimes they push me even further. So we never know what that sort of chemistry project is going to be, but it seems to work. I’m happy to be in it — if that makes any sense.

Do you find that being able to play lighter and play that comic relief is something that you welcome after having such dramatic roles?
MEHCAD: You know what? The strangest thing is I forget about the role that I already did. Like I completely focus on whatever it is I’m doing. I live in that moment because I think life is a bunch of moments that lead to certain destinations. And then once you’re at that destination, you have some more moments that lead to a different destination, and so on and so forth. So it’s not like I’m comparing TK to Eggs, or TK to Rolly Marks from MY GENERATION. I just take on roles that I think I like and that would challenge me. And TK is a hard role for me to play in a lot of ways, but I find hard work challenging. So it’s not like I’m sitting at home going, ‘Oh my goodness. He’s so different than Eggs. He’d make it…’ I hope he is. I really hope he is. But I couldn’t tell you the comparison unless I go back and then watch TRUE BLOOD and go, ‘Oh, yes,’ because I don’t even remember what I did.

You’ve talked about wanting to get into producing and directing, and I think you’ve started behind the scenes, but is that something that want to translate into NECESSARY ROUGHNESS and would you ever consider directing an episode?
MEHCAD: If they’ll have me, yes. I would love to direct an episode. I think my sense of humor for the show [would fit it]. I mean have the utmost respect for the writers and the producers and the directors that we’ve had — but throughout my career, I’ve been directed by enough people to know what to do and how to talk to actors and what not to do and how not to talk to actors as well. That’s not to say that that’s anything that’s happening now because we’ve had some great directors on the show. But, yes, I would eventually down the road — Season 2, Season 3, Season 4 — I would love to throw my hat into the DGA. That would be awesome.

How do you think TK views Dani? Do you think he sees her as just a therapist, a possible friend, or maybe a substitute mother-figure?
MEHCAD: I’ve long since been embattled with that question inside of me as well — and I keep coming up with different answers. She is the only person that he’s ever opened up to 100%. So whatever that means to someone. I mean there’s feelings of trust there. There’s feelings of respect. There’s feelings of admiration. She’s also the only person who can set some guidelines and some rules that he follows — begrudgingly. But in that, I mean there’s a surrogate mother quality. There’s a, ‘She’s too old’ – ‘She’s too young to be his mother,’ obviously. But there’s the surrogate-mother quality. There’s a big sister quality. There’s a sort of a inkling of a romantic sort of longing in TK that obviously I can’t date my doctor, but I wish I could find a woman like her that I can respect like her, that could put me on the straight and narrow. I think every man looks at a strong woman and, even if it’s not the one that he’s going to be with, he says, ‘Wow, that’s somebody that I can respect and I want in my life.’ And I should say every heterosexual man I think looks at a strong woman and says, ‘That’s something I want in my life,’ whether her in particular or someone like her. So, yes, there’s a bunch of new jumbled up feelings in TK’s head about Dr. [Dani], for sure.

Why do you think TK is reaching out and trying to be friends with Dani’s son Ray J? Is it like a quasi-big-brother mentoring thing or does he see a bit of himself in Ray J? What TK’s angle?
MEHCAD: Well, I think for TK, the angle with Ray J is there’s no angle. He kind of he genuinely cares about Dr. [Dani] and her family. He really has never had any family of his own. He’s never had any siblings. He never knew his mother beyond him being 7 or 8 years old. He never had a father. He never had a lot of the situations that Ray J has and Dr. Dani and her family. It’s very foreign to him. Money is not a support system and love is. So I think when he sees that, it’s something that’s hard to like [identify] — like so maybe you show up two hours early for your appointment and you play video games with her son. Or maybe you stay too long or you overstay your welcome. Or maybe you crash a pizza party or a birthday party. Or maybe you just start to get inappropriate. Actually, a lot of these are true stories where some of the players who’ve never had any family come and come and hang out at the Sweet 16 party — and not for any inappropriate reasons — just because they felt like family. Even though Dr. Dannenfelser was like, ‘This is not appropriate.’ I think it’s more of he wants to be a Santino more than he sees an angle.

What is it like working with Craig Shapiro versus Alan Ball versus Marc Cherry?
MEHCAD: That’s a great question. Well, first of all, I would say all three were very hands-on. They just had very different ways of doing it. Marc Cherry would come up in his golf cart at Universal and hand deliver you notes and critique your performance from the night before. But not like in a way where you really felt critique. He was trying to give you constructive criticism. Almost like a stage director. Then Alan Ball was so brilliant — just absolutely brilliant. The way he handled it was he was very hands-on by hiring the right person to do what they do and allowing you to run with it. And if at any point in time he felt like it was out of line for the character, then he’d speak up. But for the most part, you never really heard from Alan about your character. You may have heard from Alan about a movie or a composer or like a song or a political issue, so on and so forth. But he was very hands-on by being hands-off. I don’t know if that makes sense, but it does when you’re in that situation. Craig [Shapiro], I think he’s got the best of both worlds, and the fact that he is available any time of day. If you have any questions, he’s always reachable. He always gets back to you — Elizabeth and Craig, both. He’s hands-on to the point of where he knows no limits. Like for instance, when we’re shooting in Atlanta, he’s in Los Angeles running the show. So if there’s a character situation going on — say like for instance, there’s other shows that I’ve worked on and if there’s a different choice that you want to make or a different line you want to throw, you have to get it approved. They have to call LA, even if it’s 6 o’clock or 7 o’clock in the morning on the East Coast, like there’s no one awake. . . . Like, I mean, how do you get this line approval? That’s makes no sense. And Elizabeth and Craig are just, ‘Hey, just do it and just give us what we want at least one time,’ and so we have the option. And, once again, they have a hands-off/hands-on approach too. But they’re like doctors, very precise. And if something is wrong, they fix it. And if something is not wrong, they say, ‘Just maintain.’

Could you kind of describe for us what your physical transformation was like and how you got your body into the shape you did from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES to Calvin Klein to TRUE BLOOD to now — because I mean you probably put on, what? 30 pounds of muscle since then?
MEHCAD: I don’t recall what I was weighing when I was like 24 years old during HOUSEWIVES, but Calvin Klein, I can tell you man, that’s kind of a special deal for me. That’s the anomaly. That’s the pinnacle. Because once I found out that I had it, I had about a month to prepare. So what I did was I got on a special diet and I was training with weights twice a day. And I mean, biking 6 or 7 miles a day, while I was shooting a show called THE DEEP END in Dallas. . . I was cutting carbs around 2 pm. So that’s not going to happen again, unless somebody is trying to pay me to get in my underwear again. So I don’t walk around like that. I’m just going to be honest — I’m completely honest about that. I do not walk around looking like that. It’s crazy. It would take way too much work. I would just end up being on a subway somewhere and choking somebody because I would just go insane and be like, ‘I want some carb!’

Can you tell me about what the collaboration is like between you and Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen?
MEHCAD: They are really fun guys. They’re the nicest guys you ever want to meet. Also, I think and they’ll tell you they are actually doing some of the best work of their entire careers and they love it. We are all doing this to make the best work of our careers and we all love it. It’s just nice to collaborate with Marc and Scott. And once again, I learn so much watching these guys work. Keep in mind, I’m the youngest guy out of the four, so a lot of times I’m obviously doing my job, but I’m astounded by how good everybody else is. I’m astounded and I’m lucky to be surrounded by that. I’m so blessed to be able just kind of sit back sometimes and learn. It’s amazing. It’s really amazing. It’s like free school and a job.

A lot of viewers know you from TRUE BLOOD as Eggs and on DOLLHOUSE. I know that you said that you don’t compare roles, but I was hoping you could compare working on more supernatural shows versus this show, which obviously is based on a true story — maybe the challenges and the joys that you have going from more supernatural realm to more realistic.
MEHCAD: Okay, that’s a great question. For me, the supernatural is actually a little more difficult because you are having to imagine something, nine times out of ten to get a reaction. Or you’re put into a situation where this probably never would happen or you would never see it happen and you would never experience it happening. But, at the same time, I’m such a sci-fi buff and such a sci-fi nerd and lover and I romanticize about it. I believe in aliens and I believe in ghosts and I believe in all these occult and extraterrestrial and extra-sensory things. I think that they’re there. So I actually don’t always consider them science fiction. Sometimes they’re science-fact waiting to happen. And I like being a part of that. It’s fun. It’s a lot of fun to be able to exercise this sort of sensational muscle that never gets exercised (in your daily life). But I think that there are aspects that are in a lot more difficult areas to play the day-to-day lives of human beings. Not to say that is true for every episode or true for every film you do, because there’s some people who live really interesting lives. If you don’t have something to draw upon, you have to go there in your mind and you have to exercise that same muscle, just a different part of it.

In the preview where Dr. Dani says, ‘TK, at this point in your career, it’s mostly a mental thing. ’I’m curious if you find yourself also thinking out about being an actor. Are there challenges that come to you that are not about being able to do a sports team, not about being physical, but it’s more of a mental challenge?
MEHCAD: Well, you know what? If you choose to be an actor the entire thing is 80% mental. It’s because the hardest part about being an actor is when you’re not working. You fail and you fail a lot. There’s a statistic that says, maybe you broke 1 out of 18 auditions — and I don’t even think that’s true. It’s just that, if you take that to heart — if you take that temporary failure to heart — then you’re going to believe that this is something you can’t do. But the fact of the matter is if you fail — and like I said before, I think failing is only temporary. Because if you choose to win, you’re going to win — no matter what. If you don’t take that failure to heart, it’s mind over body. It’s mind over situation and the fact that you say, ‘You know what? All I have to do is choose to get better. All I have to do is choose to get undeniably good, and they can’t continue not to hire me.’ That’s a lesson that you have to learn on your own time. But it’s a lesson that you have to learn as an actor, period. You can’t just step into a room and say, ‘I’m great.’ knowing you’re probably not. Probably not yet. But you could be — you could be. It’s all mental.

Craig Shapiro said you were perfect from the minute you walked in the room and he knew you were going to be the star of the show, so there you go.
MEHCAD: Craig is a flatterer. But I appreciate that. It means a lot and I’ll take it to heart. Thank you.

In the new USA Network series SUITS, Gina Torres portrays Jessica Pearson, a name partner at a New York City law office, whose hot-shot legal protege Harvey Specter has just hired a savant con man to pose as a new lawyer at their office. The ensuing legal gamesmanship and high-powered chess match leads them all down a path, which either leads to their redemption or an ethical morass that could jeopardize them all.

In portraying Jessica, the woman who mentored Harvey, what do you think motivated her to take on such an endeavor? Was she motivated by an altruistic reason, personal reason or just plain curiosity?
Gina: I think what moves anybody to mentor somebody, who turns out to be as big a pain in the ass as Harvey, is potential. You see an undeniable potential in someone and if you feel that you can bring it forth, if you can nurture it in some way and have this person realize have this self-realization and the professional realization that they deserve, then I don’t see how you can turn away from that challenge or that experience.

How would you describe Jessica and Harvey’s professional and/or personal relationship?
Gina: Oh God. Harvey. It’s complicated, as the movie says. I think like all great relationships, and I’m hoping that we have the time to prove that this is one of those great relationships that we can in later years turn to and go, ‘Oh God, that’s like – that so Jessica and Harvey.’ It is more than just one thing. It is both deeply intimate and personal, as well as mysterious. I’m his mother, I’m his sister, I’m his priest, I’m his confidante. I’m all of those things, as he is for me.

On the surface this is a series about the relationship between two men. But then we have other people that come into play, like Donna and Jessica. How do you see, like, the role of women in this show?
Gina: I think and I believe — as has been my experience in life in general — that a strong man doesn’t get very far without a strong woman beside him – not behind him, beside him. I think Donna is a fantastic example of that. And Jessica is certainly a fantastic example of that, as we establish very early on that Harvey would not have the career that he has now if Jessica didn’t believe in him. So, having said that, I, Aaron Korsh and all the other writers on the show have done nothing to shortchange that reality. I think the women in this series are depicted very intelligently, powerfully and also without shortchanging their femininity. I mean, [Mike and Harvey] are all-men and [Donna and Jessica] are all women, and they’re all in this together.

You’ve played a whole history of strong female characters. Have you drawn on any of that to prepare for this role as Jessica?
Gina: Jessica is kind of a culmination of so many characters and women and just the life experience that I’ve had over the years. It’s great at this point in my career to sort of arrive at [this character] at this moment in time. It all goes into the pot.

To follow-up on the whole strong female character thing. That seems to the theme on USA shows. Did you take that into account when you took this role, that you were going to be playing the strong female character?
Gina: I believe my initial reaction was, ‘Oh, another strong female character.’ More strong female character questions. It is something that follows me. I’m so happy that it does, I have to say. They are great fun to depict. It’s also great fun to find the chink in the armor. As much as I am enjoying playing Jessica and in all of her unapologetic feminine fabulous authority, it’s just as much fun to unearth and find those things that make her vulnerable – that make her human – and I think ultimately make her more interesting.

What do you think female viewers will learn from Jessica?
Gina: Oh gosh. I think that’s a very personal sort of individual thing. Certainly on the surface, if you work hard and if you’re committed and if you really believe in what you’re doing and conduct yourself with a kind of grace and conviction that you can get as far as you want to. It’s about choices in your life. Sometimes you make good choices, sometimes you make bad choices, and you just have to wait and see which ones turn out to be which.

What I did want to know is how did you get this role? Was it one of those things where you had to go out for it and audition and really fight for it, or were you lucky enough to have it offered to you?
Gina: I was lucky enough to have it offered to me. That’s not to say that I didn’t have to jump through a couple of hoops. But having said that, I was on a very short list. I had, because of my long list of strong female portrayals that that preceded me, I’d already had a kind of a relationship and a rapport with USA Network based on some things that I had done with them previously. So my name came up for this part and they asked if I was interested. And I was. I was really only interested because she’s not a gatekeeper. She’s just not the babysitter watching these guys swing, as it were. She plays an important part in their consciousness — which I’d like to believe, since I go to work every day. . . .There is also a promise of developing [Jessica] as a fully realized woman and what makes her tick, and what makes her interesting. So that’s that’s what I’m hoping viewers will get to see.

In the pilot Harvey comes in and he pretty much blackmails Jessica to get his senior partnership back. And Jessica almost seems proud of the fact that he used this maneuver to get his position back. Is that a correct interpretation of that scene and how does that play into the relationship between Harvey and Jessica?
Gina: I think as the series starts to unfold, more and more about that particular scene is revealed. It’s less about pride and more about knowing and expecting Harvey to react in a certain way. I think she’s very familiar with how he plays ball, and she needs him to play ball in a certain way. So Jessica sort of has a plan and and Jessica’s plan for Harvey is that she really needs him to grow a soul. I think as the series progresses more of that is revealed as you get to know how they relate to each other and what the work actually means to them as individuals. As much as she respects the kind of lawyer that he is, I think she’s still on the fence a little bit about the kind of a man that he is. So we’ll be seeing that play out over the season.

Will we be meeting the other named partner at any time and will there be kind of some other interoffice politics and we will we be delving into more of the personnel at the law firm?
Gina: We’ll definitely be looking into more of the people and certainly delving into more of the regular cast and getting to know them and what those interrelationships are. As far as the silent partner, we have yet to meet him. But there’s still a few episodes that we have yet to shoot, so who knows? Mr. Harden or Ms. Harden might show up.

According to Gabriel Macht, in Harvey’s backstory, he’s kind of created for his character and he said that Jessica likely had a really big hand in creating him as the man that he is. Would you say that that is true to his backstory? Is that the reason why Jessica lets him away with so much that most other people would not let a lawyer like that get away with?
Gina: Yes, I think that’s actually very true that Jessica had a great deal to do with who he is and where he is. And she’s not done raising him. Though it might appear that she lets him get away with a lot. What’s so interesting and fascinating about this world that we are in is that there are no absolutes. There’s no black and white. You have to take each case and each situation as it comes. It’s really much like life — take each individual case for its merit and the job that needs to be done. We all become guilty of blurring the lines and the boundaries. So who’s to say what is right and what is wrong? We’re all just trying to figure it out.

The thorny world of Pearson Harden, the games just got murkier and yet more intriguing. How long can this ‘house of cards’ last? Tune in to find out. SUITS airs Thursdays at 10:00PM on USA Network.

Full of enthusiasm and exuberance that mirrors her character on the show, Brooke D’Orsay could barely contain her excitement over the upcoming third season of ROYAL PAINS. She was only too happy to share what she loves about Paige, the Paige/Evan relationship and what may lie ahead for the two love birds.

When last seen at the end of the second season, Paige and Evan were embarking on a European dream vacation. As the series picks up nine months later, Paige and Evan return to life in the Hamptons still as in love and happy as ever. As Brooke teased, “They did go to Europe. We start a year later at the beginning of the following summer. So they’ve been dating a year now. The first year everything is new and exciting, but this new year brings complications for their relationship.” The balloon has not exactly burst, but real life issues begin to encroach in their cocoon of bliss.

Talking about the one thing that really stands out and describes who Paige is as a person, Brooke said that the word that best describes her is “benevolent.” As she explained, “[Paige] has such a good heart and is so generous. She always tries to act in the best interest of others.” Even when it may not be in her own best interest, such as hiding a secret.

Yet despite this altruistic streak in Paige, Brooke really admires Paige’s ease with life. She tried to explain it as, “I admire her ease –her sense of ease. She always does the right thing.” That instinct to do the right thing will be tested soon enough when there are conflicting things that weigh upon Paige as the third season reveals.

The growing depth and expansion of her role has even surprised Brooke who exclaimed, “I was really surprised! [Paige] was originally in one episode, possibly two.” The fact that the show has embraced her and the character so warmly and made her an integral part of it has been a dream come true for Brooke. Not only is the storyline going to take some surprising twists this season, but it has also offered her the chance to explore facets that she never envisioned.

Brooke also loves the rich and diverse wardrobe that Paige gets to wear on the show. She shared that her favorite costume piece so far was an Elie Tahari dress that she wore in the scene where Brooke said goodbye to her parents. In fact, she happily shared, “I actually went out and bought it! Caroline Duncan is the best at creating wardrobes. I don’t have to add any input because the outfits are perfect!”

Looking back over this past season and all the fun moments she got to be a part of on the show, Brooke said that the one moment that really resonated with her was when Hank said, “A person is rich who manages to do well and good.” She said, “It was the best line. I loved it!”

As for how much fun it is to work with her co-star Paulo Costanza, Brooke was just as effusive in her admiration of him. She gleefully noted, “He’s the best! He is so much fun and we have such a good time. I really do enjoy his company.”

Brooke is so happy with where her character arc is going, she sees a world of opportunity ahead for Paige and Evan. When asked if she thought there may be a wedding ahead in their future, she exclaimed, “I certainly hope so! I feel like it could go that way. I wouldn’t be surprised.” She also has thought about the wedding and what it would be like and speculated, “I think it would be non-traditional. It would be fun and youthful. Outside of the box but still nice.”

In addition to the fun scenes that she has with Paulo, Brooke just loves her co-stars Reshma Shetty and Jill Flint, who play Divya Katdare and Jill Casey respectively. They are bit of a ‘girl’s club’ and Brooke revealed, “I love those girls! We do dinner and drinks all the time.” She also said that it would be fun to have an episode focusing on the ‘girls’ for a change, such as “We need to have a CHARLIE’S ANGEL episode!”

Finally, for DROP DEAD DIVA fans, Brooke also teased that she will be making another appearance on the show in either episode 6 or 7 this season, which is a flashback with both Jackson Hurst and April Bowlby. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that special appearance as well.

To find out what secrets Paige may be hiding and what kind of wrinkle that puts in her future plans with Evan, be sure to tune in to ROYAL PAINS starting Wednesday, June 29th at 9:00PM on USA Network.

During a recent conference call, Mark Feuerstein provided some key insight into his character Hank Lawson and what lies ahead in the second season of ROYAL PAINS.

Where do we next find Hank after the nine months that have passed since the last time we saw him?
Mark: It has been a long winter for Hank Lawson. The first time you will glimpse him having lived through the winter and spring, he will have a full beard on his face – a mane as I like to call it, across his entire face. He’s taking care of patients. He lives a full winter and spring running HankMed by himself — or with the help of Divya’s presence and responsibilities never made fully clear. Over the course of the winter, she’s been through stuff with Raj and the cancellation of the wedding. But Evan’s been gallivanting all of Europe with Paige. So it’s been a long winter, but he’s made it through and he will shave his beard for all of our viewers who might not like to see that much hair on his face. And then there’s a lot of new wrinkles and storylines to ensure from having you know, been away from HankMed for nine months.

Where exactly are the Lawson brothers residing now that Boris has kicked them out?
Mark: A very good question. Because we don’t want to shock our viewers too much, Hank and Evan will return to Shadow Pond soon enough. But there will have to be some repairing of the dynamics between them and Boris. So there will be a scene between me and Campbell Scott where we address the tension that emerged because of Hank’s dynamic with Marissa and the triangle between Marissa, Hank, and Boris. Hank is being a good doctor by respecting the doctor/patient confidentiality, but Boris in his inimitable way demands full loyalty. And because Hank can’t give that as a result of his Hippocratic Oath, it produces major complications in their dynamic. But suffice to say, it will all be okay between him and Boris and his living arrangements at Shadow Pond so that other conflicts of a greater importance can ensue.

I loved the Season 2 rap video that you did, and was hoping that we could get a Season 3 one. Do you have any news on that?
Mark: Oh, you’re killing me — we didn’t make a Season 3 rap! It was merely because of our crazy schedule that we just weren’t able to make one. I’m going to do my best to make sure [we do another one]. Thanks to you for saying that — because it’s only been members of the crew who have complained to me, which of course I take to heart — but now that I know that the people want some more rapping, I’m going to have to get off my horse and get on top of making something. Because it’s so much fun to make them, and yet it takes a lot of time from production and of my time, and I’m going to be directing an episode this season so my time will be even less available to me. But we’re going to make something, and it might involve the crew this year playing various roles of the HankMed characters. That’s all I’ll say for now. But it’s in development.

Can you talk about the relationship between Hank and his dad and where that’s going to go this season?
Mark: So we lived a very full arc with Evan and Hank — the Brothers Lawson — trying to repair their relationship with Eddie R. Lawson, our long lost father who left us when we were 11 and 9-years old respectively. And we repaired that relationship and we let Eddie R. Lawson (played by Henry Winkler) back into our lives. And now, we’re somewhat of a unit. We’re tight. We are back in action. But right at the moment, when we both have begun to trust our father again, he is being sent to jail. So that was a big wrinkle, and there was even a question at the end of the season whether he’d go to jail or not. But we made sure he did and fulfilled his debt to society. Now he’s coming out of jail and I think the big question in Evan and Hank’s minds is: Will he walk the straight and narrow path? So as we head down to Florida to pick him up, we are very much preparing for battle to make sure Eddie walks the straight and narrow path. What we didn’t realize is that we would encounter is a new member of the Lawson family, Hank and Evan’s grandfather, who we have never met and never known. That character of Ted Roth is played by none other than Ed Asner, who was one of my favorite of television growing up on the Lou Grant show and just Mary Tyler Moore and throughout history. He was most recently in Too Big To Fail, which I thought he was brilliant in. But we were so lucky to get Ed Asner to play our grandfather. It’s one of our biggest guest stars for the season. And it’s the result of the familial tension that continues to develop and give our characters dimension in Season 3 of ROYAL PAINS.

What a rich cast with Henry Winkler and now Ed Asner. Can you talk about some of the other guest stars that are going to be coming up on this season?
Mark: Yes. I am often moved to writing an email to our casting department because they do such a brilliant job of bringing incredible actors, both well known and not as well known to the show. Two guest stars of a more worldly-nature, less actors and more personalities, that I’m going to mention now are Greg Jennings, the great wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, who has played in the Super Bowl and caught two touchdown passes in the Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh Steelers is a guest star in Episode Number 2 — where I get to recapture my high school glory days playing football in the episode. It was so much fun to get to play football again and to get to work with Greg Jennings, so that’s one. Then in an episode we’re about to start shooting on Monday, we got Matt Lauer to do an episode, and he will be shooting next week. So look for Matt Lauer in Episode Number 7. Then actor-wise, we have incredible actors like Julie Benz, who you’ll know from a bunch of different TV shows, like Natalie Zea. Julie Benz was on NO ORDINARY FAMILY and a bunch of other things that you would know; Natalie Zea, who is on that amazing show whose name is escaping me [JUSTIFIED], with Timothy Olyphant; and then Shiri Appleby, who was on LIFE UNEXPECTED. All these great actors that we have access to because we shoot in New York, but we also get actors that come in from L.A. We’re going to have Tony Hale in the same episode as we have Matt Lauer. So Season 3 is turning out to be the biggest bang up year for ROYAL PAINS in terms of guest stars that we’ve ever had.

Is there going to be some sort of shake up this season between Hank and Evan? So that they won’t be so co-dependent, or perhaps Evan will consider moving out on his own?
Mark: A very good question and you’ve hit upon it. If Season 2 was about family, and Evan and me repairing our relationship with our dad, Season 3 is going to be not just family, but what goes on between the brothers. And it will be about the new conflict that has been developing between Evan and Hank slowly but surely over the course of our three seasons and our two summers in the Hamptons. Evan and I have – like so many families who go into business together — had different ideas about how to grow the business of HankMedm, and that will come to a major head in Season 3. In addition, Evan and Paige are developing into one of the cutest couples on television in my opinion. Brooke D’Orsay, who plays Paige, is so adorable and only brings out the most delicious colors in Paulo Costanzo, who so brilliantly plays Evan. But there are things about Paige that Evan doesn’t know and Hank becomes privy to. Because of those things, the relationship between the two of them gets very complicated and makes for even greater conflict between Evan and Hank in Season 3. . . So I’ve said a lot and very little at the same time. But you know for every spoiler wherever they may be, I want to keep some things a mystery. But there are things going on with Paige even of a health nature related to her physical wellbeing that may be called into question and may be a problem for Hank as it relates to Evan and Paige.

Do you think that Hank believes in true love or soul mates? Because he seems rather prone to just kind of going with the flow of whatever woman that comes into his life.
Mark: I think Hank does believe in soul mates. I think part of the reason he stayed in the Hamptons was because of Jill Casey and to see what might emerge between the two of them in the Hamptons — and their relationship has proven very complicated. They were on again, off again, on again. And now it looks she’s found her bliss and her calling in the medical attention that she’s going to give to those in need around the world, because she’s going to stay on this mission in South America with the Red Cross or whatever organization she signed up with the character played by Will Chase at the end of last season. So she may not be staying in the Hamptons, and it may not be true love. I think i it interests the writers to keep Hank open and available, but I think it also interests the writers to maintain the sense that there is something that was meant to be about Jill and Hank. Hopefully, we could keep that going for ten more delicious seasons of ROYAL PAINS!

You and Evan have really great chemistry on the show as brothers. Do you guys work on that? Do you like hang-out outside the set? How does that translate so well on TV?
Mark: First of all, thank you for saying that. I appreciate it. I love working with Paulo Costanzo. I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a more impulsive, impetuous, and instinctive actor in my career. He brings so much to the table every scene that I get to do with him. And I don’t know if you guys know this – I’ve definitely said it before — but the character was originally written not as Evan Lawson but as (Evan Waxman), my best friend. It was only when Paulo Costanzo walked into the room that the writers said, ‘This guy looks too much like him both in the form of his proboscis — his nose — which clearly resembles Mark’s, and the steel wool afro or JewFro,’ as some people like to call it, ‘they can’t just be friends. It would be too weird. They must be brothers.’ And here I am telling you story lines that only involve family. The story line of our father, the story line involving our grandfather played by Ed Asner, and now the story line all of Season 3 which will be the tension between the brothers Lawson. None of that would’ve happened if chance and fate hadn’t brought into the room a guy who looked so much like me and was so brilliant and perfect to play my brother. So the answer to your question is (a) thank you for commenting on the chemistry. That was just chance and fate. And (b) do we hang out? Yes. Once in awhile when we’re not you know working, he and I will go to a movie together or I love his wife Jen, and we’ll all be at some event together and loving hanging out. But I have to say when and how we were soul mates, the answer would be that we’re most meant to be together as brothers on ROYAL PAINS. And yet beyond that, I hope that Paulo and I remain friends for life. And I have every reason to believe that we will.

Then, in one last shout-out to the fans of the show, Mark shared how working on ROYAL PAINS has been the most amazing experience for him by saying: It’s my pleasure. Really, I will say thank you to everybody. That it remains the joy of my life and career to be on ROYAL PAINS, to play Hank Lawson.

To see what the Lawson family is up to and what medical secret Paige may be suffering from, be sure to tune-in to watch ROYAL PAINS which returns Wednesday, June 29th at 9:00 p.m. and then airs Wednesday nights on USA NETWORK.

Taking a page out of the successful television playbook, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS introduces viewers to an exclusive world where the rich and powerful play and where they can stumble into some thorny predicaments if they do not keep their game face on and cannot keep their head in the game – whether the game is competitive sports, politics, the news room, on a race track or in a boardroom. To help keep these power players in the game, they seek the aid of Dr. Dani Santino, a psychotherapist, deftly portrayed by Callie Thorne. During a recent press call, Callie shared what makes Dr. Dani the best player in the game.

What was it about the premise of the show and your character that made you want to do it?
Callie: I think initially the fact that it was a true story and that it was based on a real woman, a real extraordinary woman, is you know why. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the script and read it in the first place. Because, to me, that automatically means that a story’s going to be that much more rich and that much more layered — especially in the writing room. It just means that everything’s going to be that much more true, that much more grounded — and I was right. I read the script, I flew through it, and it felt so honest and based out of a real kind of truth, that even when I got to meet her, it all sort of fell into place so perfectly. Because there’s a spirit about her that fills up the entire page. Which then makes it that much easier to go ahead and get in front of the camera and try to tell her story.

Are you a football fan and is there a team that you live and die with?
Callie: I do not know a lot about football. I will say that I’m a Patriots fan because I’m from Boston and I love watching the games. I just don’t know much about them. That, in fact, did me very well because Dr. Dani on the show doesn’t know anything about football either — she’s sort of thrust into this life. So I am getting to know a lot more about football and I find it fascinating. I’m liking the game-watching a hell of a lot more, that’s for sure.

What advice or insight has Dr. Donna given you that you’ve taken in to your character?
Callie: I was busy acting when I landed the role before we shot the pilot. Then she and I got to meet in New York City and I was very nervous about it. But she has such an amazing energy. The minute we hugged, it was one of those things. We both put our hands out to shake each other’s hands, but just went, ‘Oh never mind!’ and we gave each other a big hug. From that moment on, even through that first meal together and then through the course of the pilot, because she was with us in Atlanta every day that we were shooting, I was so grateful just to hang out with her. It wasn’t so much about research and researching her actual history. We did a lot of talking about that and the sort of steps she took through her career. But what was important to me was I just wanted to soak up her spirit — because I think that’s partly what makes her so extraordinary and her story so extraordinary. So though she was always around to answer any questions I had about cognitive behavioral therapy or hypnotherapy and she had given me a great list of books to read up on, it was more important to me that she just be around because I was concerned that she was happy and that she felt good about what we were shooting every day. Plus, she makes you feel very safe. Everybody was just so happy when she was around. Everything was just a little bit more heightened when she was around. And that helped me in terms of my own storytelling. Though the show isn’t a documentary, it’s a show that is inspired by her. It’s still very important to me that I represent her in the right way.

What do you find most challenging about the role?
Callie: I think that in any role, whether it’s on TV or film, it can be hard to do comedy and drama, particularly within one story. I think I thought that’s what was going to be hard. But because it’s a true story and so many of these things that happen in the episodes are all things that really happened to her, for the most part, it doesn’t feel like a pendulum swinging from a really funny scene and then here we go to a touching scene. It all sort of is a very smooth journey through each episode. I think that’s what I thought was going to be so hard and it wasn’t. It’s actually one of the easier things. I think what’s hard for me is she’s a therapist, but because she’s a different kind. She’s not as formal. She’ll go to the football field. She’ll go to the bar, where the football player is partying instead of showing up to practice. Sometimes it’s hard for me, as Callie, not to play her even more maternal, in terms of the comfort level. It’s hard for me remember that there still is a boundary between the therapist and the client. So I do have to sort of check myself that way. But that’s what’s great about her. Dr. Donna’s always available for me to call her and say, ‘Isn’t it hard for you sometimes not to want to hug your client? If they’re crying, don’t you just want to hug them?’ And she’s like, ‘I absolutely do. I have a heart, you know.’ But I think that’s an interesting challenge in the show, for me.

Going from a show like RESCUE ME where you are one of many cast members and now you are the lead, how has that been for you as an actor?
Callie: It was a really big transition. I’m not going to lie. I was very nervous about that because — starting in television in 1997 when I joined HOMICIDE, it was an ensemble cast — since then, I have been sort of thriving in that arena. So I was very nervous about being number one on the call-sheet for a change. In terms of RESCUE ME and seven seasons of watching Denis Leary be a master number one on the call-sheet, and it was kind of like a master class, I didn’t realize what I was soaking up from him. It is weird being the person that’s there from sunrise-to-sunset, while all the other actors sort of come in and do these scenes and then they leave and someone else comes in. I’m the constant. But it’s interesting because I don’t feel like I’m the lead because the scenes are so rich with these other characters and because the actors are all so good. I think it took a long time to cast this pilot and for good reason. I think because they took such great care in casting every character, it didn’t matter if someone was a lead or if they’re farther down on the call-sheet, so to speak. So it still feels like an ensemble to me because each moment with each character is equally important. Even if it’s 2/3 of a scene with my daughter, that scene is equally as important as a 4-page scene with Mehcad. I think the hardest thing for me to master — in terms of shifting jobs like that — is shooting one episode while learning the next episode. Because I’m used to getting the script, I’ll learn my couple scenes, I’ll go in two or three times a week, and I’m out of there. That is the exact opposite of what’s happening here. At first, I was scrambling a little bit because I wanted to be able to be overly prepared as I am in my other jobs and that’s an ass-kicker. You have to buckle down. But I found that I kind of thrive on it and I love shooting scenes of Episode 4, but at lunch I’m studying scenes for Episode 5. I’m very good at sort of compartmentalizing all of it. It’s new and could have been really scary, but I love it.

Dr. Dani is somebody who helps others with therapy, but who is her go-to person? Who does Dr. Dani go to when she needs some help? Who is that person for her?
Callie: I think her friends definitely. She has her best friend Jeanette (the genius Amanda Detmer). But I think, in the beginning, her relationship with Marc Blucas’s character Matt, he is not quite yet that person. Because they’re sort of walking that romance of ‘will they, won’t they?’ line — do they keep everything business wise? So he’s not quite somebody yet that she can turn to when she needs help. And her mother’s totally off her rocker, so I think that’s part of what pushes the story — in who does she turn to for help? Maybe Nico might turn out to be somebody surprisingly that she can turn to. But I think that she doesn’t have someone yet. I like that where we find her, in terms of she’s newly divorced and she’s a newly single mom and the job being shifted into new gears — I like that everything at home is still kind of being figured out and that the audience is figuring it out at the same time that she is figuring that out. I think that’s what makes it extra interesting.

Do you identify with your character Dani or with Dr. Donna who’s the inspiration for it?
Callie: I think the things I mostly connect with is the idea of not giving up. It’s something that Dr. Dani and, obviously because of Dr. Donna, that it really is one of the things that she works so well with her patients in therapy. The bottom-line really is to not give up on yourself and that’s an ongoing thing that I have in my own life. You have to trust your instincts and just keep trying. If you come up against a brickwall, you’ve just got to figure out which way you want to go — up or around. It’s all about the attempt and that’s what I connect with. Not only is she trying to teach people, but it’s a daily lesson and it’s a daily exercise for me.

Can you talk about your relationship with the rest of the cast?
Callie: In terms of Marc Blucas, playing the trainer, and Scott Cohen, playing the fixer or the enforcer - we still don’t know really what his job is, which I love — the connections that Dr. Dani has with all these people: with her kids, with her mom, with her best friend and then subsequently with each guest patient that we have each week, it’s kind of like what I was saying before: even if it’s just a short scene, the writers have done such an amazing job showing what these connections are with these men that she’s working with, with her children — they’re rebellious teenagers. They’re at that period of time where they want to buck the system and with their parents are getting divorced, they’re figuring out all those kind of manipulations of life. The ‘Dad would let us’ and dealing with all that stuff. In that way, because the connections are all so strong, everything feels like an “A” story rather than there being A, B, C, D stories during the course of one episode. I guess that’s what I mean — why I feel like it’s an ensemble,. Everything feels as important as the next – each character, each interaction feels as important as the next — and that’s really what ensemble means to me.

It seems like in Dani’s house that she is pretty clueless about how her family is falling apart.
Callie: Yes. I think that is part of what I love about the pilot so much is that we thought she had a perfect normal life — a stable, lovely suburban life. The fact that everything kind of blows up in her face and she is in a way scrambling to sort of keep it together, I think you see people’s true character in that kind of environment. What happens to people when they fail or feel like they’re about to fail? What is it that they do then? I think that’s where you can sort of see someone’s true heart. Because this is all coming out of a real life story, I think it’s something that audiences can really connect with. Whether they have been in this kind of situation — whether they have been divorced or whatever it is — I think that the stories are so well told that people will kind of appreciate watching her navigate her way through. Everything is just new. That’s why it’s so much fun to play and, hopefully, why it will be so much fun to watch.

In the pilot, it sets up the beginning of this relationship with Matt, but I was really intrigued by Dani’s dynamic with Nico. Are we going to see some sort of love triangle there?
Callie: No, I think that it’s kind of a delightful accident that happened during the pilot. It was not necessarily that we weren’t meant to enjoy the relationship between Nico and Dr. Dani, but I think that after all was said and done and the show was put together it — because the relationship is so different between she and Matt – she and Nico kind of set it up for a delicious place for there to be a possible triangle. The way things have been going, there’s not anything like flirting going on between Dani and Nico, but that there is an energy between them. They find each other interesting. There’s an ongoing thing where my character is always trying to get him to smile, like cracking a joke or doing something dumb. We always play with that because it’s also very fun to watch Nico/Scott Cohen crack. I like that they’re letting us play with that a little bit because I think that, while there is the fascinating part of the Matt and Dani relationship, it takes it a little bit further than the standard formula to have the questions of Dani and Nico. Whether that that would become a romantic relationship or that he would become someone like a confidante to her –that’s what’s going to come into play.

Who would say has been your favorite client for Dani so far?
Callie: My favorite clients is always going to be TK. Because he’s the first. It’s always going to be Mehcad Brook’s character, even though in a new client patient come in. The stories have been so great and so out of the box in terms of one being with a professional poker player and another is a professional skateboarder. We also had a race car driver. There’s no end to the variety of these characters that are going to come to her for help. But I think TK’s always going to have this special spot in her heart because he will have been the first and he will always be a constant patient that the audience gets to see. They will get to see TK every week as well.

Can you talk about the guest stars on the show?
Callie: Each time the new cast comes in, I’m floored by the people that they’re getting. In terms of Matt Barr, who plays the race car driver, and Nick Bishop, who I love also from BODY OF PROOF with Dana Delany, and Amanda Detmer who plays one of my best friends. The energy on our set is sort of propelled by the fact that we’ve got people who are very experienced in all forms of acting. Even the people that may not have a theater background, they’re ready to play, they’re ready to explore in the same way that you can when you are doing theater. We’ve set up this wonderful environment on our show that, though it is a television show and it’s scripted and you have to know your line, a lot of times we’re allowed to play and improve — whether or not that makes it on screen you never know. But it definitely makes a difference and it just makes a difference in the energy, which then plays its way into the chemistry between all the actors.

You seem to be known for playing feisty characters. Do you think that your personality kind of makes you especially good for those kinds of roles?
Callie: I think so. I think that it has to be a mixture of trust, in terms of who you’re working with and who’s writing for you and who you’re acting for and who your bosses are, in terms of how much of your own personality you do bring to a role. I’ve been really blessed in that a lot of the jobs I’ve had — and most especially this one that they urge me to bring a lot of my own personality. In terms of what I was saying earlier on about the fact that NECESSARY ROUGHNESS isn’t a documentary about Dr. Donna, It is an inspiration, so they are open to me bringing my own energy. I also have a lot of my own quirks and my own strange physical behaviors, but I’m very lucky here in this environment that they do urge me to bring that along with me. So there’s times in the scripts where though I may not have been in a situation that Dr. Donna had been in and I can’t necessarily pull from it, what I can do is say to myself, ‘Do it as if I was in this particular situation — having this conversation that was going this way, and how would it make me feel?’ I can add that in. I’m very grateful for that because sometimes it makes things a little bit easier.

Patrick Johnson and Hannah Marks, who play Dani’s kids on the show, raved about working with you. How is your relationship with them?
Callie : I love them! Patrick and Hannah are two of the most extraordinary young people I’ve ever met in my life. They’re unbelievably excited to be on this show, which makes a difference in everything. They’re so happy to be where they are, but they also happen to be incredibly gifted and are way ahead of their years in terms of the wisdom. For whatever reason my scenes with them always flies by. We’re always like, ‘oh, we’re done? You got that already?’ The three of us seem to click very well and we have very much the same sense of humor. So when the three of us are together there is a little bit of a spark. Though I don’t know what it’s like to have children, there is something when I’m with them that I go into momma-mode and even when we’re between scenes and I get to sit with them and hang out which I love to – I love hanging out with them because they’re so funny — I definitely feel very motherly towards them. I’m constantly going, ‘Wait, what? What did you say? What happened? Who said that to you? Well, here’s what you should do.’ I’m always throwing advice at them that they’re not asking for, but it’s because I just adore them. When they were casting the roles of Dani’s kids, I didn’t have the opportunity to do any kind of chemistry-read with them, so I just trusted that they were going to cast a couple of great kids. But they went far beyond what they could have done by finding these two. I really think that both of them are going to have really long careers. And I’m very excited that they’re with me on this show.

To see how assuredly Callie Thorne brings Dr. Dani to life and all the amazing predicaments that she finds herself amongst – whether it is with her kids, her ex-husband, her new love life or just working with her patients, be sure to tune in for the 90-minute premiere of NECESSARY ROUGHNESS on Wednesday, June 29th at 10:00PM on USA Network.
