10 Reasons We Can’t Wait for the Start of the Fall Television Season
Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with MELISSA & JOEY Star Melissa Joan Hart
What is it about MELISSA & JOEY that made you want to come back to doing a series?
Melissa Joan Hart: It was a long road for me. When I finished SABRINA I spent the next year pretty much just planning a wedding, getting married and getting settled into married life. And then the first thing I did the day my baby turned one I went off to Calgary and did a TV movie with Mario Lopez for ABC Family. And I enjoyed it so much just being a mom and being able to be funny and have a great time and work with some fabulous people; I worked with Markie Post on it and just some amazing TV comedy actors that made it so nice to go back to work.
There’s a shorthand between people in television, and especially people in sitcoms, that’s so nice that you just fit and you know how to make it work and it’s fun to go to work every day when you have people that are so professional like that and it made me go, you know what, maybe I really want to be doing sitcoms since I had all these little brush-ins with it again. Originally, I was against returning to sitcoms, I thought I wanted to do episodic [television] because it seemed like the only thing missing from my career. But after guest starring on a few dramas I was like, this is not fun. This isn’t fun to me.
I realized that if I was going to have kids and have a career that the best possible job I could have again would be to go back to sitcoms. With working with Joey in Atlanta on MY FAKE FIANCÉ, I realized that we had something really special, we had a lot in common, we’ve known each other forever, we had this great onscreen chemistry and that we should try to make a go of this. ABC Family agreed and we’re all happy.

The Tribe Has Spoken: Randy Jackson is AMERICAN IDOL’s Sole Survivor
And then there was one.
First Paula, then Simon, next Ellen and now, finally, the news fans have been waiting for since July. Kara DioGuardi is officially exiting AMERICAN IDOL after a mere two seasons at the judges table. Full press release — complete with obligatory effusive quotes from numerous parties involved despite FOX’s obvious attempt to dump this story on a Friday before a Holiday weekend (or what THE WEST WING affectionally called, “Take out the Trash Day”) — can be found after the jump.
All Hail The ’Stashe: Geraldo Celebrates 40 Years In The Biz!
After four decades on the tube, Geraldo Rivera is just about as well known as a guy can get. “People either love me or hate me,” says the man with one of the most recognizable mugs in America. But no matter which camp folks fall into, one thing’s for sure: Everybody knows who he is. “Oprah, Cher, Lassie and me!” he agrees with a laugh.
To mark his 40th year in the TV biz, this weekend his current show — GERALDO AT LARGE (airing at 10PM EST Saturday and Sunday on Fox News) — will feature a retrospective that takes viewers down Memory Lane with the chair-dodging, vault-opening, war-covering newsman who once got high on national television to demonstrate the effects of smoking marijuana. And putting together the special was no easy task! “The hardest part was just finding everything! It’s been so long and there have been so many incarnations,” shares the TV vet. “There are some things you remember, some you remember just in the retelling, and others you’ve forgotten completely.” Certainly, neither he nor viewers will ever forget the 1988 GERALDO episode in which his nose was broken during a skirmish with racists. So thank goodness, he chuckles, “I found the chair I got hit by!”
How his career is defined by the public depends, he says, on how old the person is. “Some relate to me from the talk-show days, others from coverage of the war in Iraq.” As for Rivera, he considers the work he did in exposing the horrific conditions at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School — a state-funded institution for children with developmental issues — the most important thing he’s ever done. “It helped change the way we think about the mentally retarded and developmentally disabled,” he says proudly of his Peabody-winning coverage, which began in 1972. “People put down TV news and punditry, but that is an example — that 15-year-long expose — of how television news can be part of the process of positive social change.”
5 Reasons Why You’re Not Going to Want to Miss the Second Season Premiere of LIFE UNEXPECTED
In a letter accompanying the DVD screener of LIFE UNEXPECTED’s second season premiere, executive producer and creator Liz Tigelaar had this to say with regards to the new season.
“We are thrilled to be able to continue telling the stories of these characters and this unlikely family and have worked hard to broaden out and expand the scope of the show, giving our familiar characters new conflicts challenges and victories. Hopefully you’ll like what what you see.”
Suffice to say, we didn’t just like what we sawy… we love it! Which is we’re dedicating Today’s TV Addict Top 5 to the reasons why you’re not going to want to miss the second season premiere of LIFE UNEXPECTED.
Unexpected surprises!
Move over Shonda Rhimes, there’s a far more unexpected turn of events in store for fans of LIFE UNEXPECTED when the show returns for its much-anticipated second season on September 14th. What’s more, said surprise will happen just prior to those now familiar guitar strings being plucked by theme songstress Rain Perry. And, we should mention, totally worth tuning in for.
10 Pressing Questions Prior to the Launch of the Fall 2010 TV Season
By: Vlada Gelman
1. Will THE GOOD WIFE be even better in season two? One of the most successful new dramas of last season isn’t playing it safe. Season two spoilers hint at major shakeups and new characters played by incredible actors like Tammy Blanchard and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Scott Porter in a storyline that will set him up against the mysterious Kalinda. Add to that guest star Michael J. Fox, Carey working for the other side, Alan Cumming as a regular cast member, and THE GOOD WIFE seems poised to top itself. I can’t wait.
2. Can THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Nina Dobrev successfully pull off playing two characters in more than just flashbacks? Early buzz seems to suggest, “Yes,” and what we’ve seen so far in previews of season two looks very promising. Plus, after Dobrev’s surprise Emmys performance, I’m not going to bet against the girl.
3. Will the COMMUNITY writers run from Jeff and Annie again? I was lucky enough to visit the Community set recently, where Joel McHale and Alison Brie talked about their characters unexpected chemistry, so I’ll have more about this later. But I’m still concerned that the Community writers are scared of the unexpected, somewhat inappropriate chemistry between Jeff and the much younger Annie.
Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Things We Unexpectedly Loved About the EMMYS
Emmy Voters actually got it right (for the most part)
From MODERN FAMILY’s Outstanding Comedy Win to Jim Parson’s equally deserving victory, one would be hard-pressed to find fault with last winners. And while we could quibble over the fact that Edie Falco performance on NURSE JACKIE is by her own admission “not funny,” THE CLOSER’s Kyra Sedgwick most certainly wouldn’t have been our choice for Outstanding Actress in a Drama, and Archie Panjabi’s win for THE GOOD WIFE was about as unexpected as her nomination…. the fact that Tony Shalhoub and Jon Cryer’s posteriors remained firmly planted in their seat more than made up for all all of it!
And the 2010 Emmy Awards go to….
Best Series – Drama
MAD MEN
Best Series – Comedy
MODERN FAMILY
Outstanding Lead Actor – Drama
Bryan Cranston, BREAKING BAD
Outstanding Lead Actress – Drama
Kyra Sedgwick, THE CLOSER
