What’s On TV Tonight: August 19, 2009

LOTTERY CHANGED MY LIFE (8PM TLC)
Well, not my life. Trust me, if it had you all would have surely heard about it. That and I’d be typing this from a really swanky hotel in Hollywood on a brand new macbook.

TOP CHEF: LAS VEGAS (9PM BRAVO)
What happens in Vegas… gets televised nationally when 17 fresh chefs infiltrate the gambling mecca to compete in culinary challenges in the Season 6 opener.

LOCKED UP ABROAD (10PM NGC)
A Londoner (who evidently neglected to see Claire Danes’ Brokedown Palace) lands in India’s Tihar Jail after she’s caught sending hash to Europe for some quick cash.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: May 18, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
After a brief detour into a GG-glamorized vision of the ’80s, Serena and Co. are graduating from high school — but not before they try to finally smoke out the titular blogger who has plagued them for two whole seasons. Like many past seasons of Josh Schwartz’s other drama chronicling the rich and beautiful, everything is wrapped-up nice and pretty in the finale, complete with tantalizing setup for next season to top it off. Grade: B+ — Aleks Chan

24 (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
If you’re the type of person who reads the last chapter of the book first just to make sure your favorite character makes it out alive, then you’ll probably enjoy this just posted item on Watch with Kristin. If you’re not that type of person, well, we hope that you have enough self control to not click here. And, we’re sorry!

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Wondering who Ted will meet at his surprise 31st birthday party? Hint, it’s not the mother.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
KING OF THE HILL (7:30PM FOX)
Continuing to mine this TV Addict’s homeland for “Yuks” comes tonight’s KING OF THE HILL season finale which has Boomhauer swapping houses with a Canadian family for the summer causing friction in the neighborhood.

THE SIMPSONS (8PM FOX)
After swarms of unemployed workers from Ogdenville descend on Springfield, the mayor closes the borders and citizen Homer goes on border patrol. Which, as any SIMPSONS fans will tell you, means you should expect power to go to Homer’s head by… what, the eleven minute mark?

FAMILY GUY (9PM FOX)
Now far be it from us to suggest yet another alterna-“mother” theory, but is anyone else the least bit suspicious that all three male stars of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Radnor) are providing cameos on tonight’s FAMILY GUY season finale? Think about it.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
Good News: After a five year flash-forward and 22 episodes of waiting, Dave’s endgame finally comes to a close. Bad News: For Susan and MJ.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
UGLY BETTY (8PM ABC, CityTV in Canada)
If it’s sweeps, it must be time for wedding fever! Which explains why there are not one but two proposals tonight.

SMALLVILLE (8PM CW)
When Tess and Lois clash, expect the unexpected. The eight-season finale also features Oliver stepping in when Clark seems kinda reluctant to kill Doomsday.

PARKS & RECREATION (8:30PM NBC, 9PM CityTV in Canada)
Frankly, I don’t think you should be able to tout something as a “season” finale unless you’ve aired at least 13 episodes, but hey, that’s just me. Anyway, this disappointing series — which managed to pick up a renewal for no reason other than it’s pedigree — wraps up with Andy’s first gig since he broke his legs in the pit. (That probably means something to the four of you still watching.)

GREY’S ANATOMY (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
The two-hour, fifth-season finale might just as well be called “Will They Or Won’t They?” as Izzie decides whether to have surgery, Mark decides what to do with Lexie and Bailey finds out whether or not she’ll be accepted into a pediatrics fellowship.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE (8:30PM CBS)
Apparently, all the good guys really are either married or gay. How else to explain why Christine winds up bringing an obnoxious date to Richard’s rehearsal dinner in an attempt to prove to him that she’s a-okay with his upcoming nuptials.

LOST (9PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
Viewing advice for tonight’s fifth season finale: Sit yourself down with a pillow firmly planted in your lap. It will save you the pain from the inevitable jaw-dropping game-changer of an ending. Trust us.

AMERICAN IDOL (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
Somebody not named Adam Lambert says goodbye.

NEW & NOTABLE:
TIME WARP (8PM Discovery)
Deadly snakes and sumo wrestlers are observed. Hopefully not at the same time.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
AMERICAN IDOL (8PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
The top 3 finalists sing two songs each. Translation: It would probably behoove FRINGE fans to set their PVR/DVR for a few extra minutes in order to accommodate the inevitable AMERICAN IDOL overrun.

FRINGE (9PM FOX, CTV in Canada)
After JJ Abrams single-handidly revitalized the STAR TREK franchise with a 72.5 million dollar record-breaking opening weekend, Leonard Nimoy returns the favor by beaming down to FRINGE to play the mysterious and thus far unforeseen founder of Massive Dynamics Dr. William Bell.

90210 (9PM CW, Global in Canada)
Annie Mills Graduate! Annie Mills Gradu… err… sorry, we’re just practicing our chant since tonight marks our first West Beverly High prom in quite some time.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: May 11, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE BIG BANG THEORY (8PM CBS, CTV in Canada)
Leave it to Leonard and Penny to come to terms about their feelings for each other just in time for Leonard to leave for a three-month long science trip.

GOSSIP GIRL (8PM CW)
Get ready for GOSSIP GIRL’s version of THAT 80’s show when Serena’s predicament causes Lily to flashback to her younger days.

GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
The campus is abuzz about a new visiting professor played by Helen Slater. Well, duh, she’s SuperGIrl!

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (8:30PM CBS, E! in Canada)
Barney thinks he can talk his way out of a speeding ticket, This we gotta see as you would not believe how often the boys in blue don’t consider rushing home to catch an episode of LOST as a valid excuse for going a wee bit over the speeding limit. Seriously, what is up with that!?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE SIMPSONS (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Considering THE SIMPSONS is going on twenty years, we’re certainly not about to begrudge them the occasional “Help we’re running out of ideas here!” episode, with tonight’s trip to the manicurist for Marge and Lisa sparking flights of fancy about Queen Elizabeth, Snow White, and Lady MacBeth.

FAMILY GUY (9PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for FAMILY GUY, which in only their eighth season, really has no excuse for tonight’s Stephen King inspired tale. That said, since Seth MacFarlane and Co. are skewering three of our all-time favorite movies — Stand By Me, Misery and The Shawshank Redemption — we’re gonna go ahead and give them a pass on this one.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
The word on Wisteria Lane is “Deception,” with tonight’s installment having Bree lying to Orson, Katherine lying to Mike, Susan and Jackson lying to the authorities and Tom lying about his age.

BROTHERS & SISTERS (10PM ABC, Global in Canada)
Swine Flu be damned! Or at least that is what Nora Walker must be thinking when she heads down to Mexico to knock some sense into Tommy in tonight’s BROTHERS & SISTERS third season finale.
