Best of the Week #1: DEXTER
Dexter’s back in action, and boy did we wait long! That bowling scene was such a fitting cold open, it instantly reminded me of why I love this show so much. Dexter is a loveable weirdo-slash-murderer. He was last season and I expected nothing less of him this time around. Needless to say, I got what I wanted. It was also nice to see a little bit of continuity on the Rudy situation, both Dexter and his sister are still suffering through the aftermath of last season’s big finale shocker. I don’t know about you, but I say bring on another season! Strrrrrike! Ha!
Best of the Week #2: BROTHERS & SISTERS
The cast of BROTHERS & SISTERS has such great chemistry. With Sally Field as their phenomenal leader, their portrayal of the disagreeing, quirky, big family couldn’t be done any better. This episode about Justin’s return from Iraq was another great example of that. Usually I’m quick to dismiss any storyline involving the war in Iraq, but Kitty’s and Nora’s different political views on the matter made it interesting. Of course that’s just one example, there are many more aspects of this week’s episode that made the war in Iraq bearable. And making the subject of Iraq bearable, that’s not an easy thing to accomplish, at least not with me.
Best of the Week #3: TELL ME YOU LOVE ME
Why do I list this here? Because I think Carolyn must have single-handedly emptied out the local drug store at the end of the episode. Trying pregnancy test after pregnancy test – knowing full well that they were all going to tell her the same – until she finally gave up on the whole thing. I like TELL ME YOU LOVE ME for its complex relationships, and this week’s episode stood out because I was really hoping she would finally be pregnant. That final scene where she gets shattered was simply brilliant.

Worst of the Week #1: PRISON BREAK
Say it with me: “WHAT WAS THAT?!!?!?”. What an homage to a great character, or lack thereof. Looks like they cut off that storyline. Literally. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish out the episode, that’s how angry I was. It seems that right now half of the fans plan to quit the show based on principles and the other half doesn’t seem to care too much about Sara’s death at all (or the way she was killed off). Based on those first horrible five minutes of television (not to mention the Se7en rip-off), I decided to join the former.
Worst of the Week #2: HEROES
I tried to not turn this list into a repeat of last week’s, but why is HEROES so disappointing this season? It’s missing that atmosphere of season one, that special ingredient that made it this great, unique show. All the characters seem to have their own storyline with little to no interaction with each other. Who even cares about those new Mexican characters? Or the people that Peter is stuck with? The only thing I look forward to right now is Kristin Bell’s (formerly of VERONICA MARS) character.
Worst of the Week #3: CALIFORNICATION
Is anyone else getting tired of this dance between Hank and his ex-girlfriend? The show is pretty much built around this failed relationship and I have to say I could care less at this point. CALIFORNICATION is trying to reach a certain depth that I think they shouldn’t go for. Either stick to the shallow, disgusting, cynical Hank Moody and call it a comedy or go for this new deep and emotional character and call it a drama. Personally I think it would do better as a comedy. I’m just not buying this character they’re shooting for right now.
