An Ode to JOURNEYMAN

Every season has one. An under-appreciated yet highly entertaining new series that for some reason or another fails to catch on with the majority of the viewing public. Last year, NBC gave us KIDNAPPED. This season’s victim was JOURNEYMAN. And with JOURNEYMAN’s journey coming to an abrupt halt last night, this TV Addict wanted to take a moment to recognize creator Kevin Falls and his entire team both in front of and behind the camera.

From the moment the series premiered, JOURNEYMAN had all the classic symptoms of a soon to be brilliant-but-cancelled series. Frankly, a seasoned TV Addict such as myself should have seen it coming.

Showrunners Kevin Falls and Alex Graves (both veterans of another TV Addict favorite THE WEST WING) gave us a simple romance with a twist. Unfortunately, an intelligent, well acted weekly series featuring interesting adult protagonists isn’t exactly at the top of NBC’s wish list as of late.

Perhaps if Dan were bionic, solved crimes, was looking to lose weight or — in the case of a network executives wildest dream — happened to be a talentless good-looking twenty year old singer, JOURNEYMAN would have stood a better chance. Alas, Dan was a mere San Francisco reporter and family man who had the inexplicable ability to travel through time and change people’s lives.

JOURNEYMAN will soon find a welcome home on this TV Addict’s DVD shelf, alongside such other shortened season luminaries such as GROSSE POINT, FIREFLY and JACK & BOBBY [yes WB, I’m still waiting for a single season box set].

Thank you Kevin Falls for the journey. Too bad it ended just as things were really starting to get interesting.
