Tonight’s TV Addictions: January 16, 2009

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (9PM NBC, Global in Canada)
Thanks to the deal which landed first-run episodes of this series — a critical favorite that has struggled in the ratings from the beginning — on DirecTV, NBC faces an interesting situation in that they can’t advertise season-three outings as “new.” Which means some D/PVR’s might not record episodes if you have them set to record new episodes as opposed to “new and reruns.” Tonight, Eric’s coaching is criticized while Tami faces a very relatable problem as the school’s new principal: budget cuts.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (8PM Sci Fi, Space in Canada)
Forget everything else listed here, ’cause we all know this is tonight’s main event. As the final episodes begin, one question is on everyone’s lips: Who is the final cylon? Tonight, supposedly, the answer will be revealed.

NEW & NOTABLE:
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER? (8PM FOX)
If you’re watching this, I think we both know the answer. Okay, maybe only one of us does.

EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS (8PM CW)
Rochelle goes on a diet and hubby Julian suggests that everyone else join her… not because of some overwhelming concern for his clan’s health, but because it’ll save a fortune on grocery bills!

ALL MY CHILDREN (8PM SOAPnet)
Amanda slept with David. Amanda slept with JR. Amanda’s buying a pregnancy test. Any questions?

JUMPER (8PM HBO)
This sci-fi flick isn’t nearly as bad as critics claimed… or as good as it could have been. But the tale — about a young man who can teleport himself instantly from one place to another — has its moments. It also has Samuel L. Jackson, and if you just can’t get enough of the guy, stay tuned, ’cause at 9:30, HBO follows Jumper with Snakes On A Plane.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (9PM Cartoon Network)
In the first of a two-parter, Anakin’s injuries force his compatriots to try and find him help while on a hostile planet. The stories on this show aren’t half bad… too bad the animation looks like a cheaply-made video game.

FLASHPOINT (9PM CBS)
A wife holds the woman she thinks is sleeping with her hubby hostage. For some reason, all I can picture is the classic KNOTS LANDING scene in which she-devil Abby says to human doormat Valene — who suspects her husband of cheating with the town tramp —  “I’m not saying we’re having an affair, and I’m not saying we’re not. What I ,am saying is that I can have him anytime I want.”

GENERAL HOSPITAL (10PM SOAPnet)
One of those big, splashy events this soap has become known for — think the Metro Court hostage drama or the Black & White ball — begins, this time focused on… wait, this can’t be right. The hospital? Am I to believe that GENERAL HOSPITAL is telling a story that takes place in the hospital? Will miracles never cease?
