Exclusive Interview: 24 Star Mary Lynn Rajskub

The TV Addict interviews Mary Lynn Rajskub in Los Angeles, January 2009

One of the most exciting aspects with regards to any FOX press junket is that at any given moment, anything can happen.

For instance, you may wake up one morning after an ill-advised Pinkberry binge only to discover that the very friendly gentlemen who pleasantly said good morning to you as you stepped into the elevator in search of a desperately needed caffeine boost was none other than FRINGE star John Noble, looking absolutely dapper and very un-Walter like in a dark suit and sunglasses.

You may overhear an actress joke that she requires a team of hairstylists and makeup artists because these video interviews that she is about to partake in will haunt her for the rest of her career.

Or, in the case of 24 star Mary Lynn Rajskub, you may have your interview interrupted by the ever so cool and slightly intimidating star of 24 Kiefer Sutherland. Which is exactly what when down when this TV Addict had the opportunity to chat with everybody’s favorite techie, Chloe O’Brian.

So what does it feel like to finally be back on TV?
Mary Lynn Rajskub:
Yeah I forgot, it’s amazing. I’m back on this show called 24 that we’ve only been waiting for two years to get back on the air. [Rajskub pauses for a moment to pull out her best Jack Bauer impersonation] But now we’re back to kick some ass.

What intel can you spill about the new season of 24?
CTU is no more. I have to deal with people at the FBI this season. Janeane Garofalo is my arch nemesis Janis Gold: Computer tech extraordinaire. Which is really fun because we’ve been friends for years off camera and we get to go toe-to-toe on camera.

And guess what, there’s a terrors plot out there and Chloe returns to help Jack. I do things I shouldn’t, do things I don’t want to do. But what can I say. The guy tugs at my heartstrings.

It’s the Choe way.
Jack again… I can’t… It’s against the rules… Okay… I will. As only Chloe can! I also have a baby on camera, little Prescott.

[At this point Kiefer Sutherland interrupts the interview]

Kiefer Sutherland: You told people we’re dating?

Mary Lynn Rajskub: I say all sorts of things. We make out, we’re dating, I don’t know what comes out of my mouth. Help me Jack…

Kiefer Sutherland: You’re on your own darling, but you’re very pretty.

So Kiefer is your child’s father, when did this happen?
Keep Up! It happened under the Craft Services table. There are tunnels underneath the stage. Jack Bauer is my child’s father on camera and off!

What’s more challenging, working on the set of 24 for seventeen hours a day or being a new mother.
Having a job as an actress is not as hard as being a mother because on set there’s a lot of downtime. Motherhood is pretty relentless. You can’t walk away from it. It’s a new kind of responsibility. One that will really kick your ass to the next part of your life. It’s a little guy and I’ve got to take care of him.

Did you bring your experience as a new mother onto set.
It’s kind of weird how my real life has mirrored my stage life. I didn’t understand it before. But it gives you a tenderness, another level to my extremely leveled character. Things get deep.

When Chloe’s time runs out, how would you like to see her go?
I’m kind of a softy, I don’t like goodbyes, or dying. I think that Chloe should just mumble and step off into the background, mumbling. Or Chloe should die taking a bullet for Jack. TUNE IN!

24 airs on Monday nights at 9PM on FOX (Global in Canada)
