Fall Preview 09: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

By: Melissa Girimonte, The Televixen

You’ve seen the teasers. You’ve heard the hype. Now there’s only one thing you want to know: Which of the new fall shows are worth watching and which should be avoided at all costs? In this continuing series, we give you the scoop on some of the most highly-anticipated shows of the season. Which will be the next GREY’S ANATOMY… and which will be the new JOEY? Next up, The CW takes a bite out of the current fascination with all things undead with THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.

Why We’ll Watch:  What’s more intriguing than the classic story of a rivalry between brothers for the love of one girl?  When the brothers are Stefan and Damon Salvatore, 200 hundred year old vampires immortalized in attractive young bodies.  Scribes Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have taken this popular series of Young Adult novels and brought them into the 21st century, complete with pop culture references and a very hip soundtrack.  The opening scene was trademark Williamson, channelling his repertoire of teen horror flicks like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.  Now if they could just bring in the DAWSON’S CREEK wit and timing to balance out the emo vibe, and build on the suspense, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES could be television gold.  If TRUE BLOOD has proved anything, now is the time for vampires on the small screen.  At the very least, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES could be TRUE BLOOD’s slightly naive, innocent teenaged sister.  Not to mention, Ian Somerhalder as Damon is quite pretty when he’s angry!

What to Fast Forward Through: The overly angsty, brooding voiceovers while Elena and Stefan are penning their Diaries.  Do teens even write in diaries any more?  I guess The Vampire Blogs just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Watch Live or DVR: With stiff competition from Fox favourite BONES and ABC’s highly anticipated new series FLASH FORWARD in the Thursday at 8 p.m. time slot, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES will have to join the DVR cue for weekend viewing.
