Lost amidst the deafening buzz surrounding Emmy-winner Kristin Chenoweth’s guest spot on tonight’s brand new episode of GLEE comes the debut of Hollywood’s next big thing: Your very own TV Addict.
No, seriously.
Way back in April, I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to play what some (read: my mother) might call a pivotal role — Audience Member #24 — on the FOX hit.
Arriving promptly at noon, my day started off with a trip to my very own trailer. Or so I thought.
Looking around at my so-called accommodations, I was shocked to discover that not only was there no satellite TV or blu-ray player, this wasn’t actually my trailer! Rather, it belonged to my “co-star”, Jane Lynch, who not only assumed I was there to do some sort of publicity designed to advance her career, but had the nerve to inform me that “extras” don’t get their own trailers.
Extras? WTF?!?!
Luckily for the cast and crew, I’m nothing if not a survivor. Which is why after only the briefest of fits, I promptly put on a brave face to meet one of GLEE’s many costume designers, who was given the arduous task of making me look like I still belonged in high school. One McKinley High letterman jacket later (would you believe my first!), and I was ready for my close-up.
Little did I know said close-up would involve me spending the next few hours (alongside fellow journos-turned-stars-waiting-to-be-discovered @natalieabrams and @msntv) trapped inside a stuffy auditorium learning how to applaud on cue as the ridiculously talented cast of GLEE performed Queen’s “Somebody to Love” again and again and again.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the first, second and even third time I watched the performance was pure magic, although I’ll admit my mind did occasional wander to a dark “I could totally do that!” place. But the 42 time… well, okay still magical — particularly when Amber Riley’s Mercedes does a solo that defines the word “showstopper” — but you people need to know that being an extra is downright exhausting! All that clapping, standing, smiling, clapping again.
But years from now, you will all look back on tonight’s episode as the moment that a star was born… assuming I don’t wind up on the cutting room floor.
