Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with HUGE Star Nikki Blonsky

Before we get into your new show, I first have to ask what your reaction was to headlines made by former Hairspray co-star Amanda Bynes who just recently retired via twitter?
Nikki Blonsky: Amanda is one of my dearest friends and I completely support whatever decisions she make. I’m happy for her, proud that she stood up and did what she wanted to do, and didn’t care what anybody thought… go on girl! Enjoy retirement.

Not caring what anybody thinks sounds exactly like your character on HUGE. Was that one of the traits that stood out for you when you read the script?
Oh absolutely. I loved the independence of Will [short for Willamena Rader], the feeling of Will, and the emotions of Will. She’s so much fun to play. She just has this attitude about her, “I am who I am and if youdon’t like it turn around.” It’s such a great attitude to have. Too many people spend so much time worrying about whether or not people are judging them or whether people are looking at them. Where both Will and I agree is… just be yourself!

To be blunt, at least over the course of the first two episodes I’ve had the opportunity to screen, Will is a lot less likeable than your breakout role of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. Are you nervous for how audiences and fans are going to react?
Well I hope that fans are able to relate to Will. I hope that they enjoy seeing a different side of me, seeing me not just as Tracy Turnblad, but as WIll Rader, the girl who is totally different with the blue hair, boys clothes and with not the best attitude. Will is way edgier, but I think she’s definitely relatable because a lot of kids are trying to find themselves and in doing so go try different things, like dying their hair!

Despite the show being set at a weight-loss camp, I imagine that not every story will revolve around weight loss. What type of stories can fans expect for your character? With the show airing on ABC Family I imagine there will be some romance in your future!
Yeah absolutely, Will has a sparkle in her eye for a certain guy, but unfortunately that guy likes somebody else! Of course, on a more positive note, I will get to sing and dance. I’m not going to spoil the surprise, but you will definitely hear me sing a little something in the first season.

And speaking of singing, there has been a lot of talk about a sequel to Hairspray. Any news on that front>
You know with Hairspray you never know, it will surprise you. We’ll see, if there will be a sequel I’ll find out when the rest of the world does. But if there is one, I’m totally on board and would love to do it.

HUGE premieres Monday June 28 at 9PM on ABC Family
