Time-Slot Showdown: THE GOOD WIFE vs PARENTHOOD

Attention TV Addicts: Come September, assuming you’re still living in the stone-age (translation: unlucky enough to not own a DVR) you’re screwed you’ve got some fairly big decisions ahead of you. CASTLE versus HAWAII FIVE-0! PARENTHOOD versus THE GOOD WIFE! THE BIG BANG THEORY versus COMMUNITY! Suffice to say, it’s the TV Addict equivalent of Sophie’s Choice. And why, as we inch closer and closer to our favorite time of the year (read: Fall TV!) we’ll be spending some time shining the spotlight on a few of the week’s most compelling time-slot showdowns. Starting with tonight’s 10PM face-off between CBS’s THE GOOD WIFE and NBC’s PARENTHOOD.

In THE GOOD WIFE”s favor: Repeats! Unlike most of Network television these days, CBS cleverly kept their Tuesday night schedule completely intact. Which means, not only do loyal viewers know precisely where to find the show when it returns on September 28th, new fans will have been given ample opportunity to catch up with what they missed. And what they may have missed was a compelling legal drama filled with some soon-to-be Emmy worthy performances and a seemingly endless parade of Broadway guest stars now that LAW & ORDER has left the building.

In PARENTHOOD’s favor: If four remarkable seasons of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT have illustrated anything, it’s that PARENTHOOD showrunner Jason Katims knows his way around the writer’s room. And when you combine his realistic portrayal of family life with a group of immensely likeable veteran actors such as Peter Krause, Lauren Graham and Dax Shepard (among others) there’s very little not to love.

The Winner: Is for you to decide in the comments below. That said, our two cents has THE GOOD WIFE continuing to build on its gargantuan NCIS and NCIS: LOS ANGELES lead-in for a victory in total viewers, with PARENTHOOD’s strong word of mouth and stellar cast helping to keep it close in the much-sought-after 18-49 demo. In short, no biggest loser here.
