Review: SOUTHLAND

When I first reviewed this LA cop drama from ER vet John Wells, I thought that it would be better suited for cable. It made the leap to TNT (under rather unfortunate circumstances), but hasn’t made much of it — somewhere along the way, it has devolved from promising SHIELD-in-training to a meat and potatoes procedural. It has a superbly acted ensemble, but needs to get the notion that all storylines are created equal out of its head: there’s an emotionally rich depiction of spiralling morality begging for attention in Michael Cudlitz’s John Cooper. Grade: C+ — Aleks Chan
