You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve heard the hype. Now there’s only one thing you want to know: Which of the new fall shows are worth watching and which should be avoided at all costs? In this continuing series, we give you the scoop on some of the most highly-anticipated shows of the season, with today’s focus being the newest addition to CBS’ Monday night comedy lineup, 2 BROKE GIRLS.
The Boilerplate: Since these pilot presentations may go through numerous rewrites and casting changes prior to premiere, this by no means should be considered an official review. Rather a preview of what one can expect come Fall.
The Plot: 2 BROKE GIRLS is a comedy about two young women waitressing at a greasy spoon diner who strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business – if only they can raise the cash. Sassy, streetwise Max (Kat Dennings) works two jobs just to get by, one of which is waiting tables during the night shift at the retro-hip Williamsburg Diner. Sophisticated Caroline (Beth Behrs) is an uptown trust fund princess who’s having a run of bad luck that forces her to reluctantly give waitressing a shot. At first, Max sees Caroline as yet another in a long line of inept servers she must cover for, but she’s surprised to find that Caroline has as much substance as she does style. When Caroline discovers Max’s knack for baking amazing cupcakes, she sees a lucrative future for them, but they first need to raise the start-up money. While they save their tips, they’ll stay at the restaurant, working with Oleg (Jonathan Kite), an overly flirtatious Russian cook; Earl (Garrett Morris), a 75-year-old kool-kat cashier; and Han Lee (Matthew Moy), the new, eager-to-please owner of the diner. Working together, these two broke girls living in one expensive city might just find the perfect recipe for their big break.
The First Impression: Just how confident are we in the comic sensibilities of broke girl #1 Kat Dennings? So much so that we’re prepared to go out on a limb and proclaim 2 BROKE GIRLS our guaranteed lock for Fall’s biggest breakout hit (Comedy Division). Seriously. Have you seen Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist or Dennings’ scene-stealing turn in Thor? Also adding to our confidence in this show is (a) relative newcomer Beth Behrs who more than holds her own as a wealthy upper east side foil to Dennings’ down-on-her-luck character, (b) the track-record of executive producer Michael Patrick King when it comes to New York based shows featuring funny single women (See: SEX AND THE CITY) and (c) a relatable premise that will have fans rooting for, as the title suggests, 2 broke girls, in search of a dream.
The Concern: Short of Kat Dennings suffering from some sort of inexplicable brain aneurysm that unexpectedly transforms her into the female equivalent of Charlie Sheen [knock on wood], our concerns are pretty much non-existent. Cue…
The Verdict: Which, in sticking with the somewhat bizarre and out-of-left-field Charlie Sheen reference above, is simply, “#Winning.” 
2 BROKE GIRLS premieres on Monday September 19th at 9:30PM on CBS this Fall (CityTV in Canada) before settling into its regular 8:30PM timeslot on September 26th.
