Because Waiting Was the Hardest Part: We Ask BONES Showrunner Hart Hanson What Took So Long for Booth and Brennan to Get Together!

A long time ago on a website a mere click away, a mysterious “blind item” was posted alluding to the fact that one popular TV couple’s happily-ever-after was being purposely delayed by a season at the request of network executives who were nervous about removing the “will-they-or-won’t-they” tension that was believed to have greatly contributed to the popularity of the show. Unfortunately, like most blind items, the identity of the show in question remained a mystery… Until now.

Just kidding.

Despite our best efforts, not to mention our Canadian connection, fellow countryman Hart Hanson wouldn’t go as far as to confirm that BONES was the subject of said aforementioned blind item. Except to say that waiting another year to bring Booth and Brennan together was among the plethora of options on the table.

“The amount of debate that we had in the writer’s room, like when is this going to happen, is huge. We just talked about it, well we did talk about it all the time,” admitted Hanson during a recent one-on-one with the TV Addict. “Do we do it now? Do we do it at Christmas? Do we do it in Sweeps? Do we wait another year? We had tons of debate, but in the end I think it worked out.”

Of course, Hanson will have to wait until the show’s much-anticipated seventh season premiere on November 3rd to truly find out whether or not fans are on board with the exciting new direction the show has embarked upon. That said, despite his legion of very vocal fans, the showrunner isn’t worried.

“Emily’s [Deschanel’s] pregnancy has allowed us to leap frog the whole MOONLIGHTING curse where things change but it doesn’t look like they change,” said Hanson. “Things have changed, Brennan is pregnant, it’s Booth’s baby that they have to contend with so in a way I’m glad it happened this way rather than us doing it a year ago and then getting pregnant. We had to replace sexual tension with something and that something is a baby.”

A baby which naturally raised one more question that the secretive showrunner wasn’t too keen on getting into: Does BONES’ newest bundle of joy — which Hanson promised will arrive on the show when Deschanel returns from her real-life maternity leave — have a gender and/or name?

“You know how sometimes one parent wants to know the sex of the baby and the other one doesn’t, we might be having that kind of situation.” revealed Hanson. “[As of this interview which was conducted in August] We have not picked a name. I noticed that there is both a gender and a name floating around the internet and it could be right or it could be wrong.”

BONES returns this Thursday November 3 at 9PM on FOX (Global TV in Canada) and stars David Boreanaz, Emily Deschanel, Michaela Conlin, T.J. Thyne, Tamara Taylor and John Francis Daley. Catch up on past episodes you may have missed for free online at clicktowatch.tv
