You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve heard the hype. Now there’s only one thing you want to know: Which of these new midseason shows are worth watching and which should be avoided at all costs? In this continuing series, we give you the scoop on some of the most highly-anticipated shows of 2012, with the focus of today’s attention being on ABC’s GCB.
The Plot: Based on the book, Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows the continuing mis-adventures of former mean girl Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb), who after the untimely death of her Bernie Madoff meets Eliot Spitzer-esque husband, must move back to Dallas and face her overbearing mother and former high school “friends.”
The First Impression: Assuming of course you know what you’re getting into, our first impression of GCB is a positive one. Which is to say, despite an eerily similar set up to a certain CBS procedural that saw a mother of two forced to pick up her shattered life and dignity following the disgraceful actions of her husband, THE GOOD WIFE, this ain’t. Luckily, what GCB lacks in boardroom intrigue, it more than makes up for in the bedroom. Specifically, the sex-filled, scandalous and scheming not-so-humble abodes of the ridiculously likeable cast of woman who are out to exact revenge on Amanda, including the holier-than-thou Carlene (Kristin Chenoweth), Cricket (Miriam Shor) and Sharon (Jennifer Aspen). Also working in this delightful Dallas-set series’ favor are Amanda’s feisty mother Gigi (Played by Annie Potts, who has yet to meet a scene she can’t steal), and the wives respective husbands (David James Elliot, Mark Deklin and Brad Beyer) who — in the grand tradition of primetime sudsers — may-or-may-not be harboring a secret of three of their very own!
The Concern: Is simple in that CGB doesn’t exactly bring anything new the table. Which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing (See: 85% of CBS’ schedule), except for the fact that following seven plus seasons of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, not to mention the unfortunate proliferation of REAL HOUSEWIVES throughout the primetime television landscape, viewers may find themselves saying been-there-seen-that. That said…
The Verdict: Has us willing to spend a little more time deep in the heart of Texas if for no other reason than creator Robert Harling knows a thing or two about escapist entertainment (See: Soapdish, The First Wives Club and Steel Magnolias).
